HCM absoloutely.

Blackout was certainly close to making me shed a few tears during the last week.

And I cannot leave Hoodoo out. I was actually saying just yesterday this is not a depressing song it is genuine sadness. Theres a difference, "full of sorrow" was what was decided on.

I also think MOTP, MM, Bliss share a tint of sadness although it is not obvious at first. I know a lot of people describe Bliss as a happy song sure it can help you feel cheerful but I also feel like it was written out of sadness as well so I think both emotions can be drawn from it. I'm sure there are others like that... too tired to think of more

Your golden lies feed my role
In this forgotten space race under my control
Who's returned from the dead?
Who remains?

You know I don't want you
and I never did
I don't want you
and I never will

You wanted more than I was worth
And you think I was scared
And you needed proof
Who really cares anymore?
Who restrains?

You know I don't love you
and I never did
I don't want you
and I never will

I’m falling down

They were all begging for your dream
I’m falling down
Five thousand houses burning down

Too late
I already found what I was looking for
You know it wasn’t here
No it wasn’t here

I was calling your name
But you would never hear me sing
You wouldn’t let me begin
So I’m crawling away
'Cause you broke my heart in two
No, I will not forget you

Too late
I already found what I was looking for
You know it wasn’t you
No, it wasn’t you
Noooooo

Falling away
You would never see me through
No, I could not forget you
Falling down
Five thousand house burning down
No-one is gonna save this town

It's weird, while I don't find Redemption to be particularly sad, it does make me cry all the time. I think I cry more at the beauty of it than at the alleged sadness ;) It's just so moving and beautiful :'(

Guiding light is sad, well it can get to me for my own reasons, but it's not the saddest.

I think that prize goes to Escape which breaks my heart as I think it might be a personal song!:(

Hoodoo is pretty unbearable if you think about it ... just that someone would feel so unable to reveal their love that they contemplated a suicide pact...is one of the most tragic, sad things I could ever think of. There is still a lot of beauty in there too - the love is beautiful. But phew!:(

Redemption is very moving, but like posted previously, it doesn't produce quite the same feeling it's a beautiful, kind of hopeful sadness.

I think those three are probably the most powerful sad songs Muse have ever done! :stunned:

Seems as though their songs aren't as 'sad' lyrically as they used to be though.

Yeah, Showbiz is their most personal album by far and that's why a lot of fans love it. Where the most love-based songs on the last two albums fail is their lack of personal input. They might sound great but there's nothing on them like the real feelings found on tracks like Falling Down and Escape.

For me, I think the songs where the music is "sad" make me all emo, more so than the songs that just have sad lyrics. Guiding Light has sad lyrics, but the music isn't really, so it's different than listening to Redemption.

And for some reason Stockholm Syndrome really gets to me.

I think that's a good thing. I'm not really one for wallowing in someone else's sadness. I love The Resistance so much!:) It contains conflict, it's not totally feelgood, but I find it uplifting. I don't know what it is about it really. I think it's an exciting album, quite zany, and magnificant!:D

A bit inappropriate for this thread maybe! I visited it because we were talking about the early days on another thread earlier and I listened to Showbiz this evening because of that and Escape is just so touching :( but its in the past and even though it still affects me, I don't want to listen to sad songs all the time.:) I'm glad that they are happy!:)

Showbiz is the album that made me fall in love with their music... It is a very personal album but also it's about the raw delivery because the lyrics and meaning were very close to them at the time it was recorded.

The last gem in the same vein was Falling away with you (for me)... I think where Exogenesis (Redemption) differs is that the saddest is primarily in the music not the words.

Muse have their fair share of sad songs but I think I'm going to have to go with Unintended as their all-time; especially the chorus. It just gets to me every time I listen to it.

As far as simply tear jerker songs that aren't necessarily sad; I've cried over many a Muse song (in various versions) simply for the sheer beauty of the music: S4A, Stockholm Syndrome, Hysteria, Blackout (numerous times), Invincible, Citizen Erased (2nd half especially), Eternally Missed, Bliss, Resistance, Guiding Light, Overture and Redemption for starters...

what's so sad about Redemption? It's not that bad. Depends on how you interpret the song I suppose, you can relate it to a relationship, although the song is actually about leaving a broken Earth and starting again on a new planet... which isn't sad at all since it's so farfetched.

Let's start over again
Why can't we start it over again?

Just let us start it over again

And we'll be good
This time we'll get it...
We'll get it right

It's our last chance to forgive ourselves

I think the concept is really sad, and humble and moving. If you see photos of the earth from the moon, its beautiful. It's like, why do we have all these wars and damage our planet with polution? All these things seem such a waste and the background to them so trivial when we have this beautiful world. That to me is what is so sad and moving.

You don't know in the context of the song whether we ever get our last chance but Matt said in an interview, I think, that his feeling is that we don't.:(

It's making me all shivery just thinking about it. Somehow we need to do something about this. All the countries, all the people. It's not that far fetched really when you put it into the context that we are doing the damage right now. We also have the capacity for completely destroying our planet.:(

Now that I think about it muse has become such a part of my life that I can't remember which songs I've cryed to. I remember turning to sing for absolution one day when I was upset. Other songs have made me sad for different reasons, sometimes while listening I realise how pointless my life has become, and somtimes it just makes me feel alone.

But more often Muse helps me feel apart of somethings greater, Which is one of the best feelings.

Blackout :'( *slowly cuts wrists in time with "oooooOOOOOoooo" parts*

And for whatever reason, I can't listen to Map of the Problematique when I'm sad, even though it's my single favorite song... Weird, seeing as it makes me shit bricks from its epicness every time I hear it otherwise. Anyone else somehow find it sad at times?

HCM  nuff said.

Also, the ending of CE almost always brings me close to tears.

The last line in Endlessly "but the moment never comes" changes the context, makes it sad and longing.

Eternally Missed, Hoodoo, MotP and Ruled by Secrecy are up there as well

I know right :( ... When my grandmother died, I had bee listening to it, and when it came to "Looooonliness be over.... When will this looooonliness be over?..." I choked on my own tears and cried in front of all of my friends. It was really bad.

It is quite a sad song, but not as sad as Blackout. It's about a person dying, how much sadder can it get?

I have a hard time just listening to Blackout...I have to make sure I'm alone, with the lights turned out.

And MOTP...hmm, never really noticed. Maybe I'll have to try listening when I'm sad or in one of my mood swings when I'm ready to cry at any given moment lol

Hmmmm, I find the majority of Muse songs are quite thought provoking and intense both lyrically and musically and tend to make me feel emotional, but not necessarily a sad emotional state, if that makes sense :erm:

Muse songs that DO make me feel sad though....

Blackout
ExoGenesis Pt III (Redemption)
Collateral Damage (the original version by Chopin was one of my fave pieces of music anyway)
Shine - original or acoustic, doesn't really matter, both make me :'(

Screenager is the only one that feels entirely sad to me.

Nice little video :) but I'm surprised Citizen Erased, Escape and Hoodoo didn't make the list.

I also find Map of Your Head sad in a touching sort of way.

 That's funny, but untrue imo! :stongue:

Umm, Redemption, fo sho! I bawl my eyes out, like, every time!:'(
Blackout, Falling Down, Easily, Endlessly, Unintended, etc.

Umm, and also that part in Falling With The Crowd, where Matt, in his whiney, new, young, cute voice, sings "I wanna go hommmmmmmme", my heart just sinks and I'm like, "awwwww, Matteh honey!:'(" and fully tear up!:erm: Weird, but it's just so cute an innocent sounding, etc. Yeah ahha

Talking about the young one's - Host. Though it does make me giggle when Matt sings:

Cos I wasted all my youth
I’ll never see it again

And I'm thinking how old was he? About 12! Touching little song though.

I don't really enjoy the very early ones though. They have improved just a bit;) since then! :)

But!
The fact that I can't listen to that song anymore without someone shouting OMG TWLIGHT TWILIGHT111!!!11! ...is genuinely sad. X_X

On a more serious note, Hyper Chondriac Music, Redemption, Blackout

Haha I was going to write the same thing! but obviously we are not alone! :p

Well, my "saddest" ranking: :D

Unintended
Exogenesis pt. 3
Blackout
Endlessly
Escape

Hyper Chondriac is "too obscure/too heavy"... you don´t feel sad but beaten, crushed and everything... :erm: (but I like it, don´t worry) and the same for Con-Science... but that one makes me sleepy :p

Blackout, Endlessly, Shine Acoustic, and end of CE. I thought HCM first, but even though it evokes some intense emotions it's too dark to really be 'sad' like the other 'sad' songs.

I'm listening to Falling Down right this second and I just thought it was really sad! It does sound really depressing anyway, but the lyrics are so sad too..

I was calling your name
But you would never hear me sing
You wouldn’t let me begin
So I’m crawling away
'Cause you broke my heart in two, yeahh
No, I will not forget you
