I thought I hated them until I saw them two nights in a row as openers for another band. Well I must say they completely won me over. I expected them to be very preach-y and generally boring but they had fantastic energy and were very personable with the crowd. Long story short I'm glad I saw them because otherwise I'd have missed out on how great their music is.

paper wings is a pretty cool song, try that out and just kinda mingle around with the others.Try swing life away for a more acoustic type song.

their new album, Appeal to Reason, is the definition of disappointing; none of you know how much of a Rise Against fan I am, and none of you know how disappointed I am.
It's a bunch of pop songs; honestly, that's what it is. Maybe that'd be good for another band, but Rise Against has usually been a unique mixture of punk/pop-punk and hardcore. There's no hardcore in this album, just pop songs; and stale, contrived pop songs too.
Rise Against have officially sold out.

they've always been one of those un-inspirational american bands, in the vein of disturbed etc.

if you think that, then you haven't heard any of their albums; they were one of the most original but popular bands out there. Don't even think about comparing them to disturbed, or any of that other cock rock.
Listen to Revolutions Per Minute or Sufferer and the Witness before you say anything like that.

Just thought I'd bump this since I'm seeing them in November. Co-Headlinging with Thursday! :D

Oh shit.
This could make up for not catching all of Thursday at Reading, as they clash with the Prodigy.
I'll get tickets if I feel like it, I'll be seeing Rise Against at Reading for sho, one of the easiest decisions of the weekend (albeit a decision).

I only found out when I looked at the ticket. I thought it was just RA, then i looked and very nearly creamed myself...

Their lyrical style is somewhat depressing, though, so I never listen to them when I'm in a particularly bad mood.

I was thinking about whether to see them again at Brixton, because I thought the setlist at Reading festival was really poor and left a lot of songs out that I wanted to see.
But then, should I reward a band for leaving out songs? It seems harsh to want to see a band again for that reason when another band may have put on a great show.

They have a lot of great songs and it's just not possible to play them all. They'll be promoting the latest album too, so they'll only play the really popular songs from previous albums. I've seen them 3 times and each time theyve put on a really good show.

I only saw a few Thursday songs, and I'm not that familiar with their stuff anyway, so I can't really comment, except to say they were really good.
Rise Against were great, and they played a decent mix of songs from different albums, but I didn't really like the setlist as I mentioned earlier. They only played 15 songs, which quite frankly is not long enough, even if it wasn't their fault they had such a short set. I also would have liked a few more songs off The Sufferer and the Witness.

You'll want to listen to their most recent album- appeal to reason. also, Swing Life away shows a slightly softer side. they've been playing a lot of the last 2 albums on this tour I think (Appeal to reason and The Sufferer and the Witness)
I haz signed setlist and poster from the glasgow gig last week

In no particular order:
Re-Education Through Labour
Collapse (Post-Amerika)
State of the Union
Audience of One
Prayer of the Refugee
Give It All
Ready to Fall
Chamber the Cartridge
The Good Left Undone
They're all pretty likely, and if the set consists of about 8/9 songs, it'll probably be those.

Solidarity Recordings 013
Underground Communique Records 038
Track Listing:
1. Fool's Gold
2. Single File
3. Facelift
Like a lot bands, the demo tape is where it all starts. The transition from screwing around in practice to actively getting out in the world and getting their name out in the scene and hopefully finding a few fans. This was the Honor System's first shot at that.
This recording was, for a while, lost to dusty bookshelves, plastic cases stuffed under beds to be forgotten, traded away and left to rot.
...but today, we take it back.
The Honor System's original Demo Tape. Re-mastered by Dave Eck at Lucky Lacquers and slightly repackaged, but the artwork is based off the original tape sleeve
A little back-story: The Honor System formed not long after the break-up of a few well respected Chicago bands and this recording session featured the original lineup of the band, that few people outside of Chicago ever knew about: Dan Hanaway (Broadways), Tim McIlrath (Baxter-later Rise Against), Nolan McGuire, and Rob Depaola (Broadways). Dan sings on Fool's Gold and Facelift, Tim sings back up vocals on those two track and lead vocals on the unreleased track Single File. Not long after the demo was recorded Tim left the band due to his increased time spent fronting Rise Against. The band went on to release the "Single File" full length, the "100% Synthetic" EP & "the Rise and Run" album. And then ten years later this is recovered from the depths of obscurity for everyone to enjoy via a co-released 7" between Solidarity Recordings and Underground Communique Records.
We hope you enjoy it.
Why you ask?
Well for 1: Both Randy and I are complete-ist nerds, let's just get that out of the way.
...and 2: there's an exclusive song that didn't make it to the Single File album...interestingly enough called "Single File".
...and 3: it doesn't hurt that this era of the band was when Tim McIlrath was playing bass and indeed singing lead on the unreleased song and obviously singing backups on the other two. Tim, who went on to be in Rise Against, was in a lot of bands in the 1998-2000 range(RA, the Killing Tree, Arma Angelus)...and Rise Against was the one that took up most of his time and we know how THAT panned out for him.
....and 4, 5 & 6: the recording is great and they're still one of our favorite bands and this was an excuse to get to put out a record together.

Do it. Appeal to Reason, The Sufferer and the Witness, and Siren Song of the Counter Culture are all pretty good albums, and their T set (and sets in general, in fact) tend to come mainly from those 3 albums

We are in the same boat then, though I'd argue that it began as far back as Sufferer & Witness. Endgame makes me sad.

Sufferer and the Witness is a weird one, track by track, it's not as strong, but it's bloody good as an album (also, Roadside>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Swing Life Away)

I actually agree with this. Even Appeal To Reason had its highlights though. Entertainment in particular was quite fun. Very Fahrenheit 451.
AtR worked life in fairness. Not heard endgame, but imagine it may be similar

I read your review and ouch!
I respect your review 100% and even as a big fan of theirs I agree w what some of the stuff you said. But the album isn't a total flop, they do have some decent tracks. Not as good as their older stuff but yeah it still has some good tracks.
I don't know I just really respect RA a lot and it is kind of depressing seeing them decline a little. It's funny how when a band starts to lose their momentum a bit they suddenly get more known and popular...like how muse did. But at least RA aren't selling out.
I'll always support RA though.
