She`s from Dundee, well you cant hold that against her, she likes to chat, well you cant hold that against her either, she likes to do lunch, again, cant hold that against her.
Soooo, I thought it was about time somebody gave you somewhere you can chat chat chat, you chat away and post pics in everybody else`s thread, so now you can do all that to your hearts content.
So now its time for your own thread.
We all know you`re ace, fab and groovy, now its time to have fun.

i thought i'd put my account of my trip to see mirjam here.already tried to do a blog on bebo but somehow lost that one!

so here goes

no apologies for the length:D

where to start!!

the week leading up to pinkpop was stressful to say the least. on the monday therer was an inspection at work from HMI - was a BIG deal. did many extra hours leading up to that in preparation. as ususal tho, all went very well and verbally we got an excellent report. once that was over, there was a parents evening on the thursday the same week - again lots of work for that so it wasn't til that was over that the reality of what i was doing hit me. i was going on a plane!!! had often said in the past how i would love to travel if not for the fact of getting on a plane. but here i was. daring to actually do something that was at the same time terrifying and thrilling to me. strange, conflicting emotions all at the same time. but i wanted to meet mirjam so . . had to be done!

i had planned to do my packing on the wednesday BUT . . .lol . . .. come friday evening i still hadn't even IRONED. came home from the youth club 9ish on friday night with so much still to do. i still managed to switch on the computer tho and see who was about. had a wee chat with some friends. one of my work colleagues-fellow muse -a-holic:p wanted to do our usual friday night drunken photo sharing game. (i wish you could see/read our sharing folders. outs the muse caption threads to shame:LOL::LOL:)
managed to get the ironing board out - progress!! eventually manged to get the suitcase out from the cupboard and had a mad dash or 2 round the house collecting all the stuff i needed. remembering at the last minute i had presents bought that needed wrapping - as you can tell i'm not the most organised of people:LOL: - eventually job was done and i could relax! so went back on the opc for a while chatting to keeley. we both needed to be up at some unearthly hour of the morning that no human ever sees - tho bryan might maybe . . . ..:p onljyjokinghun but we were WAY too excited to sleep. eventually approaching midnight we came to our senses, said good night and went off to bed. as i was fully expecting not to sleep it came as something of a surprise to find the alarm ringing it seemed five minutes later!!!!

with a jump i got oout of bed and went to shower before trying to force myself to eat some breakfast - not easy when my throat was as dry as sawdust!!! had a quick chat to keeley before i left. we were both sooo excited by now - was great to chat to someone on the same wavelength!!!

before long my friend, sharon, arrived and it was time to set of for edinburgh.

twas a gorgeous and sunny morning - not a cloud in the sky and i just couldn't stop smiling or. . .talking. when im nervous i tend to get all chatty and talk very quickly - stop laughing mirjam!!! :D even more quickly would probably be more accurate:$ with very little traffic on the roads its not long before we arrive at the airport. im feeling pretty ok at this point - not as terriified as i thought i might have been. sharon helps me to check in and talks me through what i'll need to do,soon its time to say goodbye and im left to my own devices. once through the security checks i find my gate and settle down to wait. i can see out the giant glass windows all the aeroplanes and i cant quite believe in a matter of minutes i'll actuall be on one!! i call a friend louise from my seat and wake her up with a hangover. but she's glad i called and we chat for a while - she makes me laugh with her outrageous comments - which i was really thankful for. we say goodbye and its time to board the plane.

i was really hoping for an aisle seat but that wasn't to be so i settle into my seat, fasten my seatbelt and wait. i am consciously tring to be all cool - looking around me i everyone looks vaguely bored - as if they had a done this a million times - wheras i have this stupid inane grin on my face which i cant remove:LOL: before long the doors are closed, the air stewards give their speel and the engines start. the take off was amazing - I LOVED IT!!! felt like i was on the best carnival ride in the world. seeing the ground gradually disappear amd the clouds just outside the window was just an incredible feeling. the flight took just over an hour so in no time at all i can see land out of the window, and there is my first sighting of holland. it didnt take long to reach amsterdam airport and when we land i try not to be first out of the plane. i was advised to follow other people from the plane when i was going to get my luggage. but . . since i was at the front of the plane AND in an aisle seat in the end i WAS one of the first people in Schiphol airport!. i was completly overwhelmed when i stepped inside - i hadn't realised just how BIG the airport was. i just had to pray that i was following the correct signs. i found myself soon enough att he luggage reclaim and of course my luggage was at the far end of a huge hall. got my suitcase well enough. just had to find mirjam now!!!

. . . continued

i tried to call mirjam when i had my luggage cos i didnt really know where to go now. but t here was no signal so i justy had to take a deep breath and go through a door i prayed was the exit! the first thing i see when i push the doors open is mirjam's smiling face - couldn't have wished for a better welcome than that:D i think i might have shrieked a bit - mirjam can confirm or deny that! - and gave her a HOOGE hug. was amazing to see face to face the person who i had chatted to, texted(isthataword/)played brainbattle on msn with, laughed with on web cam in the flesh. FELT GREAT!!

we went for a quick bite before heading back home. i had a cheese and tomato roll - and i have now officially fallen in love with - i think- it's gouda cheese.
the first thing i noticed - apart from all the dutch talk! was that smoking was allowed inside. i am so used to now going to restaurants and enjoying fresh air whilst eating that i forgot tat it wasn't like that everywhere. made me realise how good the smoking ban is!!

after lunch we hop into the car - not before tho i try to get into the drivers side of mirjams car!!! LOL i get into the passengers side and its off we go. muse of course playing whilst we drive. i think mirjam has to turn the volume down so that she can concentrate on my talking - although i am trying to speak slowly. and really mirjam - YOU DID GREAT JOB at understanding me - folk ive known for years still ask me to repeat myself! put it this way when you come to wembley, you'll understand everyone else no problem!

before we arrive home in amersfoort we m,ake a small detour via mirjam's school. it was lovely to see where mirjam does all her skiving from:p:p then it was home. met sjors first. also jos' parents too - who spoke little english. still . .. better than my dutch!!:LOL
once they left we put on hullaballoo dvd which mirjam hadn't seen yet and settled down to enjoy;) mirjam has the MOST amazing sound system in her living room - never heard matt sound so good at home. soon eva and jos are home and feels great to finally meet the whole van den heuvel clan. after hullabaloo its off to town for dinner. decide to go to an italian. whilst walking through town and looking at some interesting architecture i realisei have left my camera in mirjams house which is ironic cause i always carry my camera with me - eh bryan;)

never mind

we dodge a million bicycles and head off to the restaurant.

we had a lovely time made all the more enjoyable by keeley calling every few mins to let us enjoy the luxy gig. i'm sure we must have annoyed the other folks with our squeels (ok that was possibly me:$) but it was so thoughtful of keeley to do that - we were really really grateful hun *hugs*

all too soon it was time to leave but mirjam had the brainwave of going to a pub! YAY YAY - love how your mind works!!!!:D
so there i was . all the way over in holland and where do we go? an IRISH pub!! it was GREAT!! had few to drink - and was feeling shall we say . . .merry:p and i decide to text bryan. and he decides to call.WOOOOOOOO!!!!!! mirjam goes over to the cute barman and is her usual charmimg self and gets him to play MUSE - you go girl!!! first of all knights then bliss:eek::eek: very rarely do i hear muse in dundee pubs. my fone cuts out whilst on the phone to bry and it takes me the best part of 24 hours to work out how to get any more credit on my stupid new fone:mad:

we head off home and decide to head to bed for our journey tomorrow. i start to get excited now cos . . .
WE'RE OFF TO SEE MUSE

. . . continued

i tried to call mirjam when i had my luggage cos i didnt really know where to go now. but t here was no signal so i justy had to take a deep breath and go through a door i prayed was the exit! the first thing i see when i push the doors open is mirjam's smiling face - couldn't have wished for a better welcome than that:D i think i might have shrieked a bit - mirjam can confirm or deny that!

*makes note of that*

the first thing i noticed - apart from all the dutch talk! was that smoking was allowed inside. i am so used to now going to restaurants and enjoying fresh air whilst eating that i forgot tat it wasn't like that everywhere. made me realise how good the smoking ban is!!

You are abso right about that....wonder when the government will come through with that new law......

after lunch we hop into the car - not before tho i try to get into the drivers side of mirjams car!!!

Still makes me laught, that!

Brits always saying that we're driving on the wrong side of the road.....tsk tsk tsk....

LOL i get into the passengers side and its off we go. muse of course playing whilst we drive. i think mirjam has to turn the volume down so that she can concentrate on my talking :yesey: that's exactly right - although i am trying to speak slowly. and really mirjam - YOU DID GREAT JOB at understanding me - folk ive known for years still ask me to repeat myself! put it this way when you come to wembley, you'll understand everyone else no problem!

before we arrive home in amersfoort we m,ake a small detour via mirjam's school. it was lovely to see where mirjam does all her skiving from, then it was home. met sjors first. also jos' parents too - who spoke little english. still . .. better than my dutch!!
once they left we put on hullaballoo dvd which mirjam hadn't seen yet and settled down to enjoy;) mirjam has the MOST amazing sound system in her living room - never heard matt sound so good at home. soon eva and jos are home and feels great to finally meet the whole van den heuvel clan. after hullabaloo its off to town for dinner. decide to go to an italian. whilst walking through town and looking at some interesting architecture i realisei have left my camera in mirjams house which is ironic cause i always carry my camera with me - eh bryan;)

Can you actually believe that?

never mind

we dodge a million bicycles  and head off to the restaurant.

we had a lovely time made all the more enjoyable by keeley calling every few mins to let us enjoy the luxy gig. i'm sure we must have annoyed the other folks with our squeels (ok that was possibly me) but it was so thoughtful of keeley to do that - we were really really grateful hun *hugs*

*Joins in hugging Keeley*. Was very very very special!!!

all too soon it was time to leave but mirjam had the brainwave of going to a pub! YAY YAY - love how your mind works!!!!

 Love your mind right back, hun!

so there i was . all the way over in holland and where do we go? an IRISH pub!! it was GREAT!! had few to drink - and was feeling shall we say . . .merry and i decide to text bryan. and he decides to call.WOOOOOOOO!!!!!! mirjam goes over to the cute barman
oh, yes, he's cute!!! Wanna go back there.....might suggest for tonight....won't be the same without you, Allison, tho....
and is her usual charmimg self and gets him to play MUSE - you go girl!!! first of all knights then bliss:eek: very rarely do i hear muse in dundee pubs. my fone cuts out whilst on the phone to bry and it takes me the best part of 24 hours to work out how to get any more credit on my stupid new fone

Bryan, you realize you called in the middle of Bliss playing? Cosmic!!!!
Made the night even more special......and the phonebill even longer

we head off home and decide to head to bed for our journey tomorrow. i start to get excited now cos . . .
WE'RE OFF TO SEE MUSE

Hope you're back soon. Can't wait to read the rest!
Great review, Allison!!!

PART 3

whilst lying in bed i can hear the rain outside - at home i would say the rain was absolutely stotting down!!! don't know if thats a phrase youd all be familiar with or not:erm:
so it is with some trepidation that i look out the window. i'm pleasantly surprised actually. there is a wee bit drizzle but nothing too major really so i get dressed and venture down for breakfast.

jos - i think its this morning tho i may be wrong - then gets his acoustic guitar and proceeds to play the riff to PiB. and then sjors joined in too. mirjams is truly a musical and creative household. quite lovely to be a part of- even for only a few days:D i ws lucky enough to hear mirjam play her cello along to endlessly - twas really lovely hun. i had a wee shot - but i think my legs are somewhat short:rolleyes:

so off we set. the journey lasts about 2 hours but on the way i see a field of llamas:eek:and a real proper working windmill:cool: hows that for a snapshot of holland! also because of a short detour i also manage to spend 10 mins or so in deutschland. das war gut!

soon we are in the queue to park the car and as far as my eyes can see there are cars and tents. we follow the crowd and soon realise that to get to the actual gig site will involove a half hour walk or so. luckily we mange to hitch a lift ina specially laid on bus for 2 euros so we arrive pretty quickly. time to queue up, have our bodies frisked - i think that was the word a lovely lady used;) - and into the festival. i dont think i have ever seen so many people in one space before. thousands and thousands of people everywhere we looked. we decide on a meeting place in the event we are separated and go get tokens that are used to purchase food/ drink.

first act up is gabriel rios - not someone i've ever heard of but i liked his music very much. very rythmical, latin feel. hard not to move and tap your feet along really. we have a wander around, grab a bite to eat and chill out for a bit. i can see that eva is collecting our empty cups and stacking them up. i think she is being merely conscientious til i realise that there is a reward of 5 euros for every 100 empty cups returned so we all help eva and sjors to get up to 100 glasses which we manage.

next band i want to see are razorlight. i like there songs very much and i loved joining in with golden touch, in the morning, america and somewhere else.after razorlight we meet up with mette marit and her family. v nice folks. also catch up with a couple of girls from the boards - purplesum and flulu. we have a seat on the ground for a bit whilst jos and sjors go off to listen to paulo nutini. i catch him on the large screens - last request is a GREAT SONG!

the next band we want to catch is snow patrol. we have pretty good view of them and their set is great. the highlight for me being chasing cars and run. during chasing cars there is a girl on the large screen with tears rolling down her face. bless!!

after snow patrol fiinish mirjams plan to get to the front clicks into place. once they finish mirjam reasoned everyone will leave whilst the stage is being set up and we will manage to get to the front. that WAS the plan. which would have been a GREAT plan - exept EVERYONE else had the same plan:rolleyes::rolleyes: so we are able to move closer to the stage just not quite as near as we have hoped for. so we had an hour to kill before the boys appeared on stage . . . .

PART 4

ok. so it's 8pm amd muse aren't on til 9.15. what will we do to amuse ourselves? well the smart answer would be to SIT THE **** DOWN!!!!! ( a wee homage to hullabaloo there) lol but oh no sitting down would involve moving and having space - something we definately don't have. my feet are so sore by this time . i'm not sure anymore if i can feel them:( but i 'm scottish we are made of strong stuff - girders even!! - aweescottishjokeforkarenbryanandlouise so i choose to ignore the soreness and instead concentrate on the forthcoming joy of seeing teh boys in the flesh.

there are so many different accents going on around me - i love it. i end up chatting a to a spanish bloke - he is wearing an absolution tour t shirt and find out hes not going to wembley but all this time mirjam has made friends with a small group of friends infront of us. the guy says something to me so i have to tell him i speak no dutch. - he was called dennis i think - when he discovers i'm scottish he asks me to name some scottish bands. but for the life of me all that goes through my head is travis LOL i'm telling my brain - THINK THINK THINK!!!!! eventually i remember deacon blue, the procaimers, runrig and eventually franz ferdinand. i mention the view - but he doesnt know them. we have a discussion on whether the fratellis are scottish. i seem to have a mental block at this point cos i tell him that no i'm pretty sure they're english. not til later when we get home do i have a memory of the fratellis at an award show taking irn bru onto a stage to collect an award:$ oh well my mistake!!!
this dennis manages to tell a joke in english with a punchline i understand then he starts an impromtu sing-a-long. this was FUN!!!! mostly daft wee songs but i remember he sang the dutch national anthem as well.

well i was now watching the clock as the minutes ticked ever more slowly by. i had an idea of what it was going to be like at the front after almost losing my life in pursuit of all things musey in the pit in glasgow - karen can confirm this- not sure if mirjam or sjors did tho.

we catch a glimpse of teh kirky - give him a shout out so that he doesn't feel left out:p

and sjors points out that it is 9'16 amd muse are now officially LATE. lots of cheering and shouting and wait! whats that? it's the most beautiful sound in the world!! - even more beautiful than my singing;)

IT'S MATTS GUITAR

and onto knights come our boys. i give the loudest scream i can! and within seconds i'm moshing like i'm 15 again. WHAT COMPLETE AND UTTER JOY IT IS! to see and hear music you have a passion for and with people you love. you can't beat that feeling - tho i'm hoping wembley will have a similar vibe - sure it will tho. anyhoo i'm digressing a weeeeeeee bit there:rolleyes:

one of the things i notice first is matt's red suit and how short his hair is. fraid i'm not keen on it:noey: but dom's hair - :yesey: - even IF keeley thought it looked like it had been cut by garden shears!!! but the glittery manson- ive seen it dubbed the 'gay manson' and on musewiki the 'glitterati manson' - personally i like the 'liberace manson' that guitar is shmexy!!!!
the new piano is C-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-L . someone has been buying new toys recently!!.
much better than the white one used on the last tour IMO but i still have a fondness for the old piano that lit up at he front.

The setlist is pretty standard festival fare. loads of singing jumping clapping and general shouting at matt!!! at one point the guy dennis i was telling you about gives me a shot of his binoculars. it was so kind but i wanted to say that a box would have been more useful LOL. During PiB the famous balloons are released and i realise a dream of mine when a popped balloon literally falls into my hands. i look down in surprise and quickly shove it up my jumper!!!!! i'm offered 5 euros for it from dennis but theres no way im letting go of it. LOL. all to soon matt is letting rip to newborn - i didn't realise quite how beserk he went til i saw the footage on muselive - and we were all cheering for more.

of course the boys come back on - matt minus the jacket! and with an acoustic guitar. mirjam was like - its for city of delusion. i think neither of us was getting our hopes up for unintended in case it wasnt to be played. but after the first note it was obvious that it was indeed unintended. i squealed a bit , looked round for mirjam and grabbed her hand to sing a long. was a special moment! in fact im getting goosebumps as i write. unintended has never been a favourite really but since hearing it live i'm fallen in love with it!.

Stockhom rounds off the set and all too soon they have left the stage and im left stunned and speechles with the sorest legs anyone has surely ever experienced!!!

BUT IT WAS WORTH IT!!! OUR BOYS ROCKED THAT STAGE

That made a great read, Allison!!!!

Unintended.....well......to be honest......It gave me goosebumps sharing it with you!. Had my hands to my head when I realized it was gonna be Unintended and not CoD! Then you grabbing my hand.........will never EVER forget that feeling!!

That Dennis sure was fun! Singing stoopid songs and us all going along with it. He had a fine voice too. Was thinking of writing him a postcard to say thanks for the fun. Never got round to that, tbh. Will do, tho. Remember him being a restomanager in Utrecht, even remember the name of the resto. Won't be too difficult. Will ponder on what kinda postcard to send him, better make one of my own with Muse on it!

At one point he said: "girl, you really did your homework!" Admiring the fact that I could sing along to each and every song,
He only knew couple of BH&R and some OoS. Oh, and Unintended ofcourse.

Keep it coming with more reviews, my dahling Allison! They're great!!!!!

PART 5

so the boys have come off stage to thunderous, rapturous applause and it's time to go find jos and eva and face the long treck back to the car. we get some drinks, find each other amongst the thousands of festival goers and leave - not before sjors gets the ball back that was confiscated. i now manage to remember the elluisve security code number for my fone and am able to top up my credit. first thing i do is call karen and basically shout at her:$ down the fone for 5 mins. not sure how much exactly she understands :LOL:but soon i say good bye and when i check the balance i discover that call cost me £5 - i was on the fone for less than 5 mins so that was the last of the calls - i was texting from now on. we eventually arrive back at the car and im so relieved. my wee legs wouldn't have gone much further. it is with complete bliss that i gladly sink into my seat, have a drink of water and close my eyes.

mirjam has the uneviable task of driving us all home - but she does a great job. 2 hours or so later we pull up outside the house again. i manage to pry open my stinging eyes ready to just stumble up the stairs and collapse in bed. but mirjam and jos have other plans. they are going to stay up for a bit and ask me to join them. i think to myself that i'll manage a few mins but guess what!! the more i talk the more awake i feel ( you'd think i'd have learnt that my now:rolleyes::LOL:.) soon enough i'm laughing and joking - recalling the day. was a lot of fun. jos and i talked about books we had read, books we loved and would recommend. i discovered he had read the curious incident of the dog in the night - a book i loved but didnt know anyone else who did! that was great.:D so we chatted some more and eventually about 4.30am mirjam decided that maybe it was best if we all got some sleep! i could have easily stayed up now - (must be all the practise i've had with late night chats on msn:p) but sensibly i go to bed and fall immediately asleep.

im woken up by a text from my boss  wondering if i'm okay!!! i hadn't text any of my work mates and they apparently were starting to worry slightly. unfortunately i didnt have my bosses number in my fone so when i reply to the text enquiring as to who had sent the message i get this reply ' Ur boss is texting you get my number in your fone'
that made me giggle. so i go downstairs fro breakfast and eva and mirjam are already awake. we decide to have a relaxing and easy day. mirjam takes me around the neighbourhood and we visit a small village where we see a few older ladies dressed in traditional clothes.

mirjam announces that she is cooking dinner for us - would that be alright she asks???
erm . . .YES i reply - of course. have seen all the mouth watering dishes she had prepared in her thread i knew i was in for treat.

Dinner turns out to be sweet and sour chicken. and my verdict

DELICIOUS

worth the wait:D

after dinner it is time to say farewell. i greeted the family with a handshake - well eva and sjors anyway:LOL: but i leave with a hug for everyone. i am genuinely going to miss everyone . they couldnt have been more welcoming to me. i lug my suitcase to the car and its off to the airport we go.

mirjam helps me to check in and find out which gate i have to go through. once that is sorted we have to decide what to do. i have a little time to kill. we dont want to say goodbye just yet so we have a wander round the shops and i pop into a newsagent and buy a newspaper  i missed not having a paper - and some postcards. i like to collect postcards. all my friends know to bring me back postcards from their journeys. anyone reading this is welcome to send me any postcards. LOL

all too soon it is time to say au revoir. it is with mixed emotions we say farewel. on one hand i am genuinely going to miss mirjam and the short time we spent together merely confirmed to me that we are genuine friends and not merely internet buddies if you like - and on the other hand i'm excited to be going home to my friends with whom i'm dying to share my trip and all the things ive done!

i had wanted to buy a few friends a small gift but mirjam and i hadn't had time to shop so i pop into a gift shop and buy a few things.i'll not say what as one of them hasnt got theirs yet and might read this;)

i board the plane and soon i'm on my way home.

the landing in edinburgh is just lovely. the sun is setting and the sky is lit in various shades of purples and pinks. makes my heart swell!! when i look out of the window and see the countryside it just looks scottish to me. i cant explain that feeling but the landscape is different to that of holland somehow.

now that ive landed im anxious to see karen and louise. my two favourite people in the world. except . . . i'm gonna have to wait cos louise has got the time of my arrival wrong!!

Honestly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i end up hanging about for a wee while but after a few anxious phone calls i can see karen. i am wearing my pinkpop hat so she can't miss me. i give her a big hug and louise too and it's homeward bound for me.

i think i talk the whole journey home.lol.

louise and karen kindly indulge me and let me yak away!!!

im taken right to my front door and i'm so grateful to them both for coming to collect me - especially since im dropped off after midnight and louise is up at 5.30am for work.

Good afternoon Allison!!

Loved reading about the rest of your trip, and really enjoyed looking at your lovely photos.:D

I've heard a lot about that book "the curious incident of the dog in the night" - we were going to read it for our book club, but read 'The Girl in Times Square by Paullina Simons instead (I've read most of hers). I do try and read as much as possible, but probably like yourself - it's finding the time!!!

Allison, glad I've made your day!!! In fact you've made mine too!!! :)When I suggested Paullina Simons at the book club none of them had heard of her!! The Bronze Horsman Trilogy was absolutely wonderful!!! I remember seeing 'the summer Garden' on sale in Australia, thought 'I won't buy it now - too heavy in the luggage'. When I got back here, it hadn't come out, in fact wasn't due here for another 10 months!!! In the end I had it sent over here from Australia - ended up paying more - but it was worth it!!!
Also read Tully - quite a while ago, may revisit that one. The same as you, I've got a long queue building up!!!

Perhaps we should bring some books to Wembley - I can leave them in the boot of my car, which I should hopefully park at the Quality Hotel. It will save people who are not staying overnight from carrying them to the gig!!!:) And, erm, yes I promise not drive home without giving them back!!!

OK, well, i've just read this book in 2 days. So much so, I was up till half two this morning finishing it!

The Bad Mother's Handbook, by Kate Long it's about three generations of women from a northern family, all living together and going through some pretty big traumas. Each trying to find their own definition of a 'good mother'
It's written from each one's point of view, changing every page or so. It's very funny and emotional. I certainly found a lot in it to relate to, gonna have to make sure my mum reads it! Possibly Kimberley too one day, think it would help her understand things from where i'm sitting a bit more!

Also, anything by Tess Gerritsen has become a big fave of mine. They're crime/forensic style, very gripping.

There, can I be an official member of the book club now? :D

Wow, I see a Muser Book Club has been formed since I've been out - great stuff! And a few members already!!! Hope I can join!!!

At the moment I'm reading 'Shantaram' by Gregory David Roberts for the book club. It's 936 pages, and I'm half way through at the moment. The only trouble is that I have to give it to Denise (who you'll meet at the lunch) who is also in the same club to finish by the end of the month! We take it in turns to buy the book.
Anyway, it's a great book about an Australian who escapes from prison and ends up in Bombay. It's all based on a true story and he tried to write it three times, the first two versions having been trashed by prison guards.
I'll let you know what I think of it when I've finished.
Other books I've enjoyed are by Diana Gabaldon - the Jamie and Claire series. There are six books, the first being Cross Stitch and the last being A Breath of Snow and Ashes. I believe she is writing another one too!! a lot of it takes place in Scotland in the 17th century. Claire travels back in time from the 1960's, is already married, tries to get back, then falls in love with Jamie!! Very well written, a lot of history is there as well, not just soppy stuff!!!

i had started reading her books through a review i readof tully in some random magazine. so enjoyed it and kepton buying her novels when they appeared nothing prepared me tho for the sheer emotional impact that the bronze horseman made tho. i think i've lent that book and then alexander and tatiana to my work colleagues. one of them - actually louise who posted in my thread a page or so back - loved them so much that she also ordered a copy of the summer garden from australia:LOL: so i've been able to readthe conclusion of the story at last!

Yes, they are very emotional books, especially about the war conditions in Russia and the hardships that they all go through!

I can bring them to Wembley if you want Mirjam!!! Probably easier for me just to shove them in the car!

Good question - you must be a quick reader!!!

:$
err, yes, very. Been quizzed before now cos people don't believe I could have read it properly.

Thanks for your recommendations Sue, will keep those in mind.

okay sue - slightly freaking me out you are:unsure::p:LOL: ive read that cross stich book - i really liked it but never read teh others. can you tell me the title of the second one please. cheers
x x x

Oooh, weird vibes must have been travelling between here and Scotland!!!
The second is Dragonfly in Amber, in fact I'll list the others too:
Voyager, Drums of Autumn, The Fiery Cross and A Breath of Snow and Ashes. I have the last two, I got the others from the library. I can bring them along on the 16th if you would like. They are quite heavy, so don't know what your luggage situation is???
Anyway, I'm off to get some reading time in bed now - must finish that book!

I read after I get off here! I do actually have a 'real' life :p
I started that one on Sunday night, and finished it last night.............I liked it, what can I say?!

I shall take that as a good recommendation then!!!:)

Wow, I see a Muser Book Club has been formed since I've been out - great stuff! And a few members already!!! Hope I can join!!!

You already did, Sue!

Sounds a bit like Crusade in Jeans (Kruistocht in Spijkerbroek) by Thea Beckman, a children's book. You might have heard of the movie made of that last year. Book's waaaaay better! Is about a boy who's mother invented a time machine. He sneaks off to use it to repair a mistake he made at a footiegame that's made his team loose. Finds himself in the middle of the Children's Cruisade in the Middle Ages....falls in love....all that. Very educating and emotional. Great read.

Yes, they are very emotional books, especially about the war conditions in Russia and the hardships that they all go through!

I can bring them to Wembley if you want Mirjam!!! Probably easier for me just to shove them in the car!

Sue! I love you, hun!!!!!

*jots down 'bigger suitcase' on list to bring to Wembley*

I shall make note of those too Keeley, I haven't read anything by Tess Gerritsen or Kate Long. Nice to hear of different authors.

A good excuse for you to come over and stay then!!!

:yesey: Would love to!

Good question - you must be a quick reader!!!
:$
err, yes, very. Been quizzed before now cos people don't believe I could have read it properly.

Comes with the giftedness, Keeley, being able to read very quickly. It does!!!

Thought you might have mentioned it a few times ...............didn't anyone else hear that............hmmmmm

I read after I get off here! I do actually have a 'real' life :p
I started that one on Sunday night, and finished it last night.............I liked it, what can I say?!

Dunno, what would you like to say? :D

 Me neither

Ive seen it but never read it all,

You should read that....especially because of Gareth. It's not even a big book, only 221 pages. Got a paperback, will bring that to Wembley with me.

Got a few more recommendations of my own.

Read Jonathan Safran Foer. He's written two novels now, the first one already turned into a movie, you might have heard of that: Everything is Illuminated (2002). Is a great read, movie's good too. Second one is Extremely Loud and Incredably Close (2005).
Check Wikipedia on those:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonathan_Safran_Foer#Novels

Another great read is Bill Bryson's Short History of Nearly Everything. Gives you more info on the universe, science and the history of our planet. Written in such a way that anyone can kinda understand it.

Last summer, I read a book called Saturday. Is by Ian McEwan and deals with only one day (Saturday, duh). Very very very well written.

Those are all books I don't really want to part with. Will bring them to France with me, to reread them.

I'm a quick reader too, but don't remember all I read. I'm an auditive learner....what can I say.

Goooooooooooooooooood MORNING ALLISON!!!!!

Hope you had a fab time at the festival yesterday!

Any bands we know?

When we were thinking back to Pinkpop (with a big smile on me face), we started to think ahead as well.
In august, we got another great big festival coming in Holland, called 'a campingflight to Lowlands Parardise' or Lowlands for short. Muse was there last year, this year it'll be Klaxons, Kooks, Killers, Kasabian, Kaiser Chiefs and many more. It's bigger then Pinkpop, with other musicstyles and theater as well. The festival has a website in English, you can check that out if you want.

http://www.lowlands.nl/content.php?page=english_intro

Anyway, to cut a long story short, WE BOUGHT TIX FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY yesterday! We'll be going to Lowlands, yeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaahhhhh!!!!
It's only 30 mins drive from our house, so we'll be going there and back all three days. Am looking forward to that very much.

Thank you Allison!!! Hope your head is not toooo sore!!!

I'm very impressed - Muse at Karaoke!!! I'm like yourself, have to be VERY drunk to get up and sing! It won't be so bad at Trafalgar - over 600 singing at once, perhaps I won't get noticed too much!!!

Just printed off some lyrics myself, I'm not up to scratch I'm afraid!!! Probably won't get through without a peak at them!!!

Think it's too late not to get prematurely excited!!

first of all bryan was popping over - so that was great even to start with!:D then after about 5 minutes bryan says "think that was your door" now i have security entrance to my flat so i would usually hear a buzzer if someone wants up. anyhoo i go to look through the peep hole and see this woman at my door - not a clue who it is! so i open it anyway and after a hello and a few seconds pause i realise it is in fact . . . . . . .ALICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

we ended up talking with mirjam on the web cam ((actuallymakethatbryan - hecommandeeredmycomputer) in the most fun couple of hours i have had in a long while!!!in fact my stomach is still sore from all the laughter!!1

the most exciting night - was like a preview for friday and oh my god!!!!!!

Had sooooo much fun!!!! It wasn't easy getting the bunkeys to stand still for a pic together... ma wee bro was trying to duck the camera - I almost had to knock him down and thump him a bit to get him to appear on camera!!! Luckily, he relented and Allison got the pic!

the bunkeys had kidnapped her and was holding her ransom, but no one came up with the cash so we had to let her go!!

We tried and tried to get a cuppa from the poor bouncing gal... but she was too busy giggling at the moooooose and penguins and other assorted arctic/antarctic fauna traipsing thru her lounge!!!!:LOL:

Have built another extension

Nice padded cell for him, with direct link to beer tap, a kick ass stereo and daily sweetie deliveries

Have hired a team of the finest builders to carry on his jobs, and he can communicate with them via web-cam

He can have a visitor for an hour each morning and afternoon

Should keep him out of mischief!

Ready?

How are you doing Allison??

How's the reading going? If you're like me, you're probably still Musified, and can't concentrate on reading for too long!!! I still haven't finished the book I'm reading and it's the book club meeting on Thursday! However, as luck should have it, I;ve got away with it as I won some tickets to go and see The Thrills, the Magic Numbers and Crowded House, so can't turn away an opportunity like that!!!

FREAKY INDEED!!!! The Wideacre trilogy were the first books I read by her - got them out of the libary, so don't have them here to go and have a quick look at!!! I remember really enjoying them but it was quite a long time ago, so have forgotten a lot!!! Sort of remember it was about someone called Beatrice and her daughter and a weird cousin, and an estate that meant more to her than anything!!!

Wonder what else we've both read??? Do you like Barbara Erskine, Martina Cole or Bernward Cornwell to name but a few?

read a couple of martina coles - but were okay - not gone and read more. loved the early patricia cornwell scarpetta books - tho not the more recent ones unfortunately - she seems to have run out of steam. i tend to read books from recommendations rather than sticking to authors - tho as you know paullina and philippa are at the top of my list! you read "we need to talk about kevin" by lionel shriver? thats possibly my most recent fav book if you get what i mean:rolleyes:

Ah yes, we read Kevin recently for the book club!! Great book, but what a story!!! The way he calculated and planned the whole thing!!! Not just a random incident like some of these madmen!!! Arrows as well! I certainly didn't expect the ending - I just thought his sister and dad had moved away!!! The only character I really liked was the sister, obviously Kevin was horrible, but so was his mother!!! and the father was just a weakling!

I met Martina Cole a couple of years ago at the launch of one of her books - she said she based the stories on real life in the East End - I certainly wouldn't want to meet her on a dark night!!!

Haven't read any Patricia Cornwell, but kept meaning to get around to it! so you reckon the early ones are the best then?

Isn't this good - a Muse book club!!??:D
