Adjectives just aren't adequate in describing how monumental last night was...which was ironic because the very cause of such subtle chaos has mastered linguistic arrangement in a way that pierces the smallest of hearts. I don't think that in buying the tickets I could possibly have anticipated how genuinely amazing the show would be. My adoration of Bright Eyes was more than slightly obvious to begin with, but I think now having experienced an intimate encounter with such passion, it might have become more internal than external. Non-sensical perhaps, but comforting in its recording.
But more of the actual event:
It was very fortunate we arrived when we did as 40 minutes of waiting resulted in a line extending down the block and around the corner. My two friends and I were about two rows back from the stage in the center. I believe I wasn't the only person who was slightly confused as to what exactly was going to happen; Lupos's site had vaguely called the show "Bright Eyes & Friends." M. Ward opened, and he turned out to be an incredibly talented guitarist. His voice was very melodic too; not unlike Jack Johnson. About halfway through his set, Conor ran on wearing a very interesting trench coat/peacoat/sweatshirt. He sang one song with M. Ward and then left the stage (although he did run quickly on again to retrieve his beer). M. did a few more songs, and then Jim James played a set sometimes accompanied by Mike Mogis on a pedal steel guitar. His songs were more upbeat than his predecessor. After a decent set, Conor came out again (And do excuse my doting...I am but a girl afterall) wearing khaki cords, a dark blue shirt with a painted on prize ribbon reading "#2", a black blazer, and gray velcro shoes. I must express my awe in regards to such performance-reziliant hair. They played a bunch of songs, sometimes his, sometimes one of the other performers. For that, I'm not 100% sure of all song titles. I did manage to get the setlist down, although some songs are just key phrases. Also, since I was so unfamiliar with the first two performers, these are the songs I considered to be Bright Eyes', as they were collaborative.
Train Underwater
Going for the Gold
We Are Nowhere, and It is Now
Simple In the Moonlight
Waste Of Paint
The Big Picture
Amy in the White Coat
One Foot In Front of the Other
Lonely Little Pony to Ride
Always Thinking of You
Secrets (All I Ask)
Snowflakes
*Everyone exited the stage*
At the Botton of it All, We Can See Everything
Or Is This Good-Bye?
Spent On Rainy Days
True Love of Mine
One thing that surprised me was Conor's attitude. Granted, someone who writes such powerful music shouldn't be resigned to moping about, but I had expected a bit of shyness, especially given the very vocal crowd. But he was incredibly talkative, and had more fun bantering with the audience than anyone I'd seen before. He did appear slightly self-conscious when pelted with sexual innuendo in trying to remove his blazer half-way through and ended up taking it off back stage. It was very enjoyable to watch all the musicians interact. They argued between songs about what to play next. My favorite song of the night was "Waste of Paint," if not for the simple belting out of "Sorry! Just One Cherry!" than for the pause in the middle which warrented "Opps, I think I missed a verse...sorry, there are a lot of words!"
Anyway I think I've ranted enough. This is more than likely very juvenile sounding. Just know it's because when music is its purest, not unlike last night, it's hard to feel too guilty about being at a loss for words.
I did take pictures on a disposable camera, but since it was black and white (all I had left) and the lighting was low, they came out rather crappy. I could try to fix them up a bit on the computer, but I'm not expecting great results. I'll post the promotional flyers though, if it's any consolation.

Katie, that's incredible. I think I would've cried by "Going for the Gold". I must say I was/am slightly jealous :p, but I'm glad that you had such a great time. The one thing I would've regretted is that he didn't play "You will. Will you?" That's my absolute favorite off of Lifted. Anyway, I can't be more happy for you, I can't imagine a gig that could be much more intimate, just because his songs tend to really, really hit you in the heart, and have much more significance than a lot of other songs. The music is poetry, plain and simple, and there aren't many people I can think of who have a better way with words.

Oh my, Going for the Gold *was* great! I missed not hearing A Perfect Sonnet (not that I expected him to play it), but I think I would have actually had heart failure if he'd played Kathy with a K. That song...just wow.
Someone yelled really loudly between songs about wondering when "the new album is coming out." Jim James said November 21st, but I've no idea whether he meant Bright Eyes, My Morning Jacket, or something completely different. But the new Desparecidos album is due out pretty soon. :)

To be honest, I've never heard Desparecidos. I hear they're pretty political, I'll look into them.

02-03-2004, 03:16 AM
Yeah, they are. They're more "rock" than Bright Eyes too. And there are actually set members. I'd reccommend "Mall of America," "What's New For Fall," and "Man and Wife, the Former (Financial Planning)" (though I'm not sure that last title is entirely accurate; I've seen a few different phrasings).

I've only heard two songs I can remember the names of. "Lover, I don't have to love" and "The Perfect Sonnet". I've heard an entire album, which didn't have either of those songs on it.
I like the songs I've heard so far.

The albums I started out with were "Fevers and Mirrors" and "Lifted or the Story is in the Soil...Keep Your Ear to the Ground," which I think were good choices, especially "Lifted." Conor collaborates so often that some of the other Bright Eyes albums contain only a few songs that he actually sings, although he wrote them all. And I know the songs he doesn't sing are just as well-written as the ones he doesn't, but I really do love his voice.

Is "Lover, I don't have to love" his voice? That has an intensely brilliant vocalist.

Yep.
I love his voice because he uses it like an instrument. A lot of people don't like his voice because it sounds...unattractive at some points, but that is of course the whole idea. When you're singing about tragedy your voice shouldn't sound like you're singing about cute furry animals. "Kathy with a K" is probably my favourite Bright Eyes song even though his voice doesn't sound conventionally "beautiful," because the song is so vunerable.

He just came out with two new albums...I'm not sure if they've been released in Europe yet. They're brilliant though. "Lua" made it on, which was one of my favourite live tracks from the last tour.
I will look for that cover, ok_computer.
Speaking of Bright Eyes covers (although in this case, bad ones), Jason Mraz made one that was appalling. I'm not sure if Jason Mraz ever had a hit overseas...his song was called "The Remedy." Anyway, he covered "Kathy with a K," changed the name to "Love is Real," and doesn't credit Conor with writing the song in his liner notes. All his fans think he wrote it. I was a bit annoyed when I found that out.

Meh. Lots of people don't like Obersts voice so they write Bright Eyes off, which is a real shame. What they don't understand is that it isn't all about having a beautiful voice. If you read Bright Eyes lyrics, you'll see that they're pretty damn amazing. And the instrumental arrangements alone are tremendous considering the source. So the question is, if you were Conor Oberst and you were capable of writing words and songs of staggering beauty, but your voice wasn't conventionally "pretty," would let someone else sing your songs? I wouldn't. After all the work and emotion he put into them, of course he's going to perform them, imperfections aside. That's what makes him so appealing: his voice is real. It's not produced or fake; it's even downright ugly at times. But so is life, therefore, it manifests honestly. That is what makes Bright Eyes so special. [/rant]
Sorry, but so many people use that arguement and it bugs me.
jimminys_gal, I wouldn't call Bright Eyes "popular" here (the only time I saw a video of his was during last year's Shortlist season)...but he's probably more successful here than elsewhere. I think the show I went to in February was sold out.
ok_computer, I could upload the songs and send them to you if you want. I'm not sure if it would work, but it's worth a try.

It's a cute song but like a sketch or just a small and short piece, compared with another greater songs which show the essence of Bright Eyes.

wow....
this gig was just AMAZING!!!!!
two sad guys with an acoustic guitar...
so much beauty and intensity...
a whole crwod holding their breath back... not making a single noise...hanging on Conor's lips...
it was... i'm still not back on earth...
my first surprise was..that it was SOLD OUT!!!
there was a great atmosphere within the crwod...everyone was excited to see Conor play...
it was quite intimate, even if there were loads of people... that i didn't see as i was standing 2nd row just in front of Conor...
some people were even sitting on the stage...
then Simon Joyner played...
he's also from Omaha...
and played singer/songwriter stuff... beautiful quiet songs...lovely...
and then Conor...
just wow!
he started with Lua... and i was expecting him to playing only new songs...but no.. next song was Arienette (i think i saw him wipe a tear away there) then The Big Picture... and loads of other songs...new ones and older ones...but i can't remember the order... but there was We Are Noweher And It's Now, Motion Sickness, Waste Of Paint, Going For The Gold...
before playing True Blue, he asked some people what their favourite colour is...and when a girl finally said blue..he dedicated teh song to her...
and he also played a Simon Joyner song, called Born Rubber... and he was joined by Simon during the song... he did some whistling... and in the end they gave each other a big hug... they were both so cute...
and Conor was spitting around like nothing good.. i would have been showered in spit if i'd been standing 2 people more on the right...
it was just amazing... and i hope he'll come back very soon!!!!

It seems like there are quite a few people who are put off of Bright Eyess by Conor's voice. This is why I can't understand people's fascination with the White Stripes, as a lot of the time Jack White's voice is just awful and it seems to me that because their songs just aren't as full of emotion and meaning like Bright Eyes' are then he shouldn't be able to carry it off. Hmm just something that confuses me.

Thanks for that link!
My screen name is CitazenErased (how original) and I'm usually on quite a bit. I'd be more than happy to send you (or anyone who wants them) the new songs, provided they work (I'm not 100% sure on AIM's ability to transfer WMV extensions, but I guess I could always convert them to .mp3 if I needed to). There are seven songs, three from the Take It Easy (Love Nothing) single, and four from the Lua single. :) that sounds nice! i only use msn messenger, my name is in my profile :)

hehe...
so the new albums are out since yesterday...
what's your first impression so far???
i must say that i'm absolutely overwhelmed by "Digital Ash In A Digital Urn"
but that's perhaps also because i've listened to that one all day... right now... "Hit The Switch" is on if anyone cares...
but "I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning" is really beautiful too... well, it's classic Bright Eyes stuff... refined... "Road To Joy" is amazing!!!
but i'll have to listen to that one again, just heard it once until now.... not enough...

I'd recommend Digital Ash... but they're both damn good. Digital... hasn't got so much of a country feel; felt in a couple of I'm WAIM songs the twangy guitar was a bit too much.

i'll tell u what i love too - is the bright eyes christmas album...just lovely.
i went thru a couple of phases with Bright Eyes - when I first heard their music, i instanly really liked them...then i think that maybe i 'hit their music too hard' and maybe overdosed myself with it, - but i am proud to say...that today, i can stand before you and sincerely say 'count me in as a bright eyes fan' - yup, love 'em. :D (hence the signature...)

Okay everyone listen up, when listening to "Lifted" it is vitally important that you listen to it in it's correct running order, no putting it on shuffle, it is also very important that you only ever listen to the final song "Let's Not Shit Ourselves (To Love And To Be Loved)" after you have listened to the rest of the album in its correct running order, failure to comply with these instructions will lessen the impact of the music and result in a reduction of your listening pleasure, that is all, thanks for listening.

Bright Eyes is one of the few acts that I would really like to smack in the face.
Not much talented, cringe-worthy voice, angry 6th-former lyrics, boring songs, bit of a cock (personality-wise)... and huge sales in America, lots of publicity/ coverage, yet he's still regarded as an underground genius by the oh-so-cool indie elitists.
That said, some of Digital Ash is quite good.

Calling him a coke head may be innaccurate, but in fairness, anyone can see mr peel was acquainted with drugs in some shape or form. I don't understand why everyone thinks john peel is such a great guy. While i found him nice and a good presenter i think he had a mostly pretty terrible taste in music.

I say that there is only one type of emo, emotional hardcore, my reason for saying this is all (or at least nearly all) music is emotional so if all emotional music was classed as emo than all music would be emo. Yes, I am aware I'm talking bollocks.

any fans of Desaparecidos?
project with conor in...
Bright Eyes is my favourite artist of all time. I think Conor Oberst is the most talented songwriter of our generation. However, I verge on hating this album.
Why? Quite simply because this album is full of thrashed 'teen-angst' sounding power chords and shouting vocals which instead of sounding fragile and emotive like in Bright Eyes, sound like awful American-emo. You know, the sort of stuff most people should grow out of when they hit puberty.

The only touring Bright Eyes is doing in 2006 is Bonnaroo festival in June (Well, that's the plan at the moment, things could change, so said the email I got)
I'm stoked about that, though...I was planning on going to Bonnaroo anyway...and now Bright Eyes is there, and it's his only show this year...it works out well after I missed him in November because I was on a cruise.
any fans of Desaparecidos?

YES. I prefer them to Bright Eyes when I'm in my "rockier" moods. Generally I'm a mellow person so Bright Eyes fits...but when I want something more rock I go for Desaparecidos as far as Conor Oberst goes.

Well since Desaparecidos got a mention in here, does anyone like commander venus? His voice is funny and quite high-pitched as he was still quite young. I'd still like to see it, though.

Indeed...which is why I still want to see it. I don't get angry at drunkin musicians. As long as they can still vaguely perform, I'm into it :D hahahaha.

i'm just having my first listen of the album, it's a lot folkier than usual..tho some of these tracks seem very orchestral. few songs are sticking out though, 'middleman' is very pretty, so's 'the breakman turns my way'. the lyrics are much more ambiguous this album...

Cassadaga is a masterpiece. It took me a day or two to fully appreciate it, but I totally adore it now.
Make a Plan To Love Me, Soul Singer in a Session Band and No One Would Riot for Less are particularly spectacular.

I've been listening to it this evening, and I have to admit that it's left me slightly underwhelmed. Maybe it's a grower, like you say, and this time next week I'll love it so I'll wait and see. As it stands, my favourite would probably be Middleman.
But for me, as albums go nothing can beat either "Fevers & Mirrors" and "Lifted or the Story Is in the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground".

My Cassadaga came in the post yesterday but, I can't stop playing Fever and Mirrors. I lurve An Attempt to Tip the Scales... the skit... too funny! I hear its not Conor in the skit but Todd from The Faint and its only Conor in the background swearing near the end. Very interesting!
Sunrise, Sunset... if I had to make a cd with my favourite songs of all time on it, it would be on there. :D
slowly getting into Bright Eyes' music, awesome stuff
I love First Day Of My Life, even if the chords are a bit cliché
I read they're touring with M. Ward! Very nice :)

Im really enjoying his old albums and what not. I've just recently started listening to There is no Beginning to the Story, and Everyday and Everynight, I like the older stuff like Letting off the Happiness though. Im really loving it...Contrast and Compare, The city has Sex with Itself, The Difference in the Shades, Touch, A Line allows Progress a Circle does not...All GREAT SONGS!!! Fevers and Mirrors!
Conor Oberst And The Mystic Valley Band have a new album out next month called Outer South. I got my review copy in the post today and there are damn good songs on it.

i quite like the talking bits, although i might get tired of them when i just want to listen to the songs. ladder song and one for you, one for me stood out to me. shell games is a real grower imo, i started out thinking it wasnt that good at all, and i didnt like the lyrics (i normally dont mind repetition in lyrics but with bright eyes it annoys me because it's normally so intricately worded there's no room for it) but the more you listen to it the more you see in it. has anyone read that theory about how the first verse is a reference to other bright eyes albums? this is from songmeanings:
The fireworks- Letting Off the Happiness
The vanity- the mirror cover of Fevers and Mirrors
The circuit board- Digital Ash
The city streets- The New York street depicted on I'm Wide Awake...
shooting star, swaying palm tree- the cover of Cassadaga
dont know if thats true but i really like it and it fits so well!
