View Full Version : black holes - not as good

Does anyone else not think black holes and revelations was as good? I think there's something about the recording that takes away the punch that the last 2 cds had. The guitar has no attack. Everything seems muffled.
One song I liked was Exo-politics; then I realized why. The chorus is exactly like the chorus in Citizen erased.
It's still good songwriting I guess I just don't like the production as much. I'd have to put it after origin of symmetry and absolution.. and showbiz too.

Haha, well it's your opinion so I'm not gonna tell you what to like.

It's safe to say the album lacks the complexity of the others, which is probably why it's more accessable. However, I prefer it to Absolution. I think BH&R is consistantly good throughout. Even though it feels like a half rock, half electro pop album, it's quality never dips.
I still haven't got over the fact that compared to all the other tracks on Absolution, not only are TSP and TOADA out of place, but they're just not even at a comparable quality.

I completely disagree. I think that the albums have been having more kick to them as they've been going on. Take a Bow, City of Delusion and of course Knights of Cydonia are complete belters.
I'll agree that the production is a bit iffy considering that it isn't as in your face as Origin, but then again I just see that as a different sound that they've gone into.

The production lacks beef. As much as I love the clean-ness of BH&R, the sheer un-heavyism of Assassin is criminal.
Apart from that, the songs themselves are equally as good as anything they've ever produced.

Matter of opinion. I reckon the songs are ace, but I prefer their older stuff.
Something bad by muse standards, is normally good by any other bands standards.
Pffft.. and I don't really like them that much anymore:rolleyes:Oh the irony:LOL:

i love this album.. i feel a few songs could get an extra bit of power in it.
I think BH&R is consistantly good throughout. Even though it feels like a half rock, half electro pop album, it's quality never dips.
In complete contrast to that, there's quite a big dip for me. It seems to slowly go downhill from the very first song until it reaches the likes of Invincible and Exo, then goes back up for the last 3 tracks. Having said that, I still really like it.

I feel pretty similar.
Although invincible has got to be the first muse song I can actually use a word as strong as 'hate' to describe my opinion
Even Absolution sounds positively beefed up compared, and I do miss the looser 'fuck off' vibe they had years back, but this is partly down to nostalgia most probably. They've got to change, and obviously in whatever direction they decide to go in, the change isn't going to please everybody.
If they could progress and experiment more whilst keeping a more raw vibe, I think that could be amazing... personally speaking. I'd like a progressive rock opera with an 'in utero' style production please  [/unlikely]

I think "black holes and revelations" is at least as great as previous albums if not better.
I played the album many times in-car, mp3 and on a cheap midi Hi-Fi but the first time I listened to it on a good Hi-Fi I was a little disappointed! It certainaly has a sound of it's own but it did seam a little flat cliniqical or sterile. I know nothing about music production except it must be very difficult to achive a certain sound! I only know what I like, production wise!
Can not fault the songs at all - they are bloody great - that's why I come to this web site.
If I were to show my true colours, I love the production sound of these albums:
Van Morrison - The Healing Game
AC/DC - Highway to Hell
Queen - The Game
BUT there's some great albums by Oasis, Iron Maiden ,Bod Dylan that I think production wise sound not too hot (some do sound great but not all). Its all personal taste.

There's not a single Muse album that I find particularly much weaker than the rest, but like everybody else I happen to enjoy some more than others.
What I love about Muse is that they're not willing to sell us the same type of sound over and over again. I know many fans expected BH&R to be some sort of OOS II or Absolution II, but the beauty of it is that it's different and yet the appeal of what has made the musical foundation of Muse is still there.

I personally want an album as flowing as OoS. Not one that sounds like OoS. The newest album has songs with their own distinct sounds whereas being more raw, OoS had songs that sounded like they were meant to be grouped together.

Albums from best to worst.
OoS
Absolution
Showbiz
Black Holes & Revelations
BH&R is way below the other 3's standards. I hate Invincible, MoTP is boring, I can't see the appeal in KoC, and Assasin has a rubbish Nintendo riff. To add to this the production sucks. The only good songs on BH&R are Supermassive Black Hole and Starlight.

As far as flow goes Abso > OOS in my opinion.
I think BHAR is great. Epic in a new sense. To me it sounds like condensed snippets of a whole universe of music. It's like musical planet hopping  It lacks the epic drama of songs but as an album is still massive. :)

The more I listen to BHAR, the less I like it, I guess. I used to think it was the best thing they've ever done, but Absolution is still my favorite.

And Assassin will always be my favorite, but the album version is definitely not as good as the alternate.

Thought I'd introduce myself by saying I really like Black holes and revelations. It may not be as good as Origin of symmetry, but it certainly is better than Absolution.
Muse is just not that good at the slower, 'sensitive'-kind of song, and Absolution has got Falling away with you, Blackout, and Endlessly. And Thoughts of a dying atheist isn't great either, in my opinion. The trouble with Absolution is that the verses are quite good, but then the refrain kicks in and it sounds like some poprock Coldplayish thing. Hysteria for example. Great music and all, but I just don't like the refrain one bit.
I think Black holes and revelations doesn't have that problem. Soldier's poem isn't good, but the rest is good to great. Take a bow is great, and so is Hoodoo. And Knights of Cydonia and Map of the Problematique are just greatest.
I think this album is just quite un-Muse-like, so I guess that's why some fans don't like it. But I just love the bombasticness of it all. Knights of Cydonia is waaay over the top, and that's why I like it. One day, I want to see this being played in the Colosseum in Rome, with fighter jets flying above and loads and loads of fire works being used every second. And there should be elephants too...That'd be nice... :)

your one of those "I LOVE THE CHARTS" people
Considering I rate BH&R as their weakest Album and it's the most pop Album they've created, I'd disagree with that. Becides which, SBH and Starlight didn't do that well in the charts. SBH was beaten to number 1 by Maneater (crap song) and then dissapeared out of the charts pretty quickly.

12-02-2007, 07:36 PM
LOL! You guys all crack me up. I do quite enjoy Sober. Specifically the version from the Muscle Museum EP. They played around with the Showbiz one a little too much and it sounds a little annoying. As for Overdue, again I enjoy it, but it's not comparable to the other tracks on the album in my opinion. Same for Uno, though prehaps i'm being a little unfair with that track.
Still, I see it as a Black Holes effort, with the classical Muse sound. Except some of the songs don't sit well along side others. It's probably the effect of putting two EP's together but you some times feel like you're listening to the same songs again and again in a strange way. Like Cave and Fillip, or Unintended and Falling down, or Escape, Uno and Overdue. To be honest, it's almost nitpicking as I do like most of the tracks alot. Just the albums feels as if it's not progressing or going anywhere at times.
[PS] Unintended is the Shobiz version of Invincible. They both rock!

Black Holes Is a trip really...
Starts of with a big build up/rumble - Take A Bow, a bit like a electro deathstar which then flows harshly in to the funk/dance electro trio of Starlight/Supermassive/Map Of The Problematique.....But then it just stops dead in its tracks, Soilder's Poem is kinda like a reprise, a new begining, which then flows in to Invincible which builds up and up an up...which blasts in to Assassin, then in to a funky Exo-Polotics....then it chills out a bit with big blasts of noise from City Of Delusion, mellows right out of the scale for Hoodoo. Then finally goes ape-shit for Knights Of Cydiona....
...if you actully listen to it all the way through, it makes sence.....but sometimes if you just nab a certain track your not in the right frame of mind that the previous track on the album might've put you in.....
One way to look at it.... :ashkoney:

I dont think any of their albums are completley better than any of their others. They are just different and have different er, like aims if you get me. Like different purposes. For instance blackholes is quite cutting edge, modern like... and in your face confident. Whereas it seems like absolution has more of a flow, like it tells a story. Showbiz seems more raw.
Just my take on it anyway. So I dont think you can really compare them in the sense of one being better than another.

well, blackholes was actually the first muse album i actually heard, so it's got to have something if it made me go out and get concert tickets and the rest of the albums.
I remain however, completely stuck on Origin of symatry.

Muse is different because they push musical boundaries with each of their album. They can take any new musical direction and make it their own without caring about rules. That is why I respect and love Muse. I can honestly say I haven't yet heard any bad album from them. I love their boldness and the result of their way of writing music, and how they transfer each album into live gigs and make them sound more impressing. That sums up perfectly why I'm a fan of Muse.

Muse's main albums, in my opinion, are:
Absolution > OoS/BHaR >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Showbiz
What let BHaR down was the ordering. Invincible and Starlight belong next to each other, as do Soilders Poem and Hoodoo (though Hoodoo has the balls to be louder!). That, and SP is more of a Showbiz song than a BHaR one (swap with Showbiz, Sunburn or Muscle Museum)
