I have searched just in case there was another thread dedicated to U2, but it seems that the search parameter criteria was to short... :p

Well, what do you think of U2? In mi opinion they "were" a great band, now, after the fiasco of "All that you can't leave behind" (in terms of quality that album was under average) I hope the next album will be as good as Achtung Baby, Zooropa or Pop...

And it seems that Bono pays more attention at being elected the new Peace's Nobel Prize than to the music.

Get posting your opinions... if you want :) .

I hate U2. I've always hated U2 and probably always will. Their music sucks and Bono should die a very slow and painful death due mainly to the fact that he's a complete cock.

I agree. My parents' favourite band which resulted in a very cruel childhood of listening to Pop & Zooropa on a regular basis.

I have to say that, and that not only happens to me, now, when I listen to them I don't like them in the way I used to like... In other words, they have great songs, but all the others are... how to say that... overstimated...

And it's a shame... because my bf has spent great part of his money in all their singles (even the first ones), promos, etc...

Jondalar, it could be worse... I grew up listening spanish music...

To me, their great album is achtung baby; great great great. They lost themselves with Zooropa, although they did a great tour. Pop is good, but not exciting. And the last one is good only, but has got two of their best songs ever: "Walk on" & "Beautiful day". The new songs included in their "best of" were great, at a very high level. I love "Electrical storm" & the Gangs of new york track. The expectatives are very large. They are doing their best another time. I hope seeing them live next year. The biggest band in the world nowadays.

U2 were great. Like alot of bands they've got a little stale as the years have gone on, but 'Achtung Baby' and 'Joshua Tree' are albums of sheer class.

De los pocos q se salvan de la quema  ! With spanish music I meant Julio Iglesias, Dyango, Perales and that sort of thing :'( .

Devotionalee (escribiré en inglés para q el resto me entienda, si pueden  ), Achtung Baby is one of my favourite albums ever... Zooropa and Pop is an evolution of their music... but, the last one has only four great songs: Walk on, Kite, Elevation and Beautiful Day... the others are just songs.

However I hope their new album will be good, because I'm starting to feel a little bit disappointed. And they have promised a new album since a year so far... and now, where's the album, they said that in november of this year... but I don't believe it.

I really like zooropa, it's an underrated alb; i love flood's production, and the experimental touch.
I like 1/2 of pop; the rest is a bit stressing.
I love walk on & beautiful day on ATYCLB; i really like elevation, stuck in a moment, new york. But there are songs that i hate (fullfiller trash). I can't listen to "grace" :o .
The alb is being delayed again and again, because of producers, bono travels and related. The result has to be better with that amount of time. Others like garbage or depeche mode. Lazy! Turttles!!

I'd say they WERE the best band for a while... they were really good and I love Achtung baby, but they have been slowly coming to a painfull death for the last few years and yes Bono should only dedicate to what he does best and that's ONLY singing and writing and being in the band

I'm afraid I totally agree with what you say. As I have said before Bono is dedicating most part of his time at speaking with presidents and doing conferences and all that sort of things (and I'm not saying that it's bad, he has to take advantage of being famous and fight for what he believes... but not to that extend) and has left the band aside.

I have readed (I don't remember where) that The Edge has gave an ultimatum to Bono: or the band or the humanitarian projects... but maybe that is a little bit exagerated.

I don't know if anyone here likes U2.

I personally love their very early work from the 80s. 'Achtung Baby' proved to be an incredibly well crafted and original album that changed their sound for the good. However, the totally fucked it up with the electronica crap on 'Zooropa' and 'Pop'.

Their last two albums have been quite decent, though. However, I have to say that 'How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb' seems too mellow for my taste. I hope they get heavier on the next one.

Pop and Zooropa were absolutely awful, except for 4 tracks: 'Stay', 'The First Time', 'Staring At The Sun', and 'Please'.
I'm very glad that those days of Bono wearing make up, singing falsettos and humping cameras are gone.
I know the initial concept was of self-mockery, but the joke was not on themselves but on all the fans. It seems like all they wanted to show was that they could come up with the most atrocious albums and people would still buy them anyways. It was a radical change that started good on 'Achtung Baby' and then turned into a complete joke.

If anyone wants to appreciate U2 for what they do best, they should listen to 'Boy', 'War', and 'The Unforgettable Fire'. Those albums truly showcase U2 at their peak of creativity.

-aMUSEd-
08-12-2006, 09:40 PM
I don't think that's necessarily true, they were at their most creative in Achtung Baby, nothing they'd ever done before had ever sounded vaguely like it.

I'm not a huge fan of October, I think it's a bit boring, but on the other hand, I love Pop and Zooropa. I think they're albums you have to listen to a bit before you can get them...

The new albums/compilation U2:18 is a bit meh, it's just all their mainstream stuff, with Saints and Window In The Skies (which is okay, but I think they should've released Mercy instead - that was a WAAAY better song). The DVD is good though, I think it's better than the "Live from Chicago - Vertigo Tour" one, but maybe that's just me

I quite like HTDAAB, but their older stuff is better, a new album is rumoured to be released next year (which I seriously doubt will happen, more like late 08) - but fingers crossed ;)

Love U2, I was brought up on their music. Its coolio cause my whole family are fans ^^
I dont like their GreenDay song though, it was just poop IMO. Personally I believe their old songs to be the best, like "With or Without You." And The Joshua Tree was their best album!

mr.jingles
19-12-2006, 01:20 PM
I always thought that the 'Joshua Tree' was perhaps the most overated album of all time. Not a bad one, but very overated indeed.

It's an album more based on strong hit singles, rather than an album as a whole.

U2 were the first band I got into properly when I was about 10 methinks... loved 'em ever since, one of my fav bands to this day. I think they're absolutely amazing. I have days when all I can lsiten to is their 80s stuff... but then there's days when the 90s stuff is so fitting. Their newer stuff I still like a lot, but def not as much.

Something I've learnt from both the official website and one of the U2 fansites.

On July 21 Boy, October and War remastered editions will be re-released with live tracks b-sides, rarities etc. just like the Joshua Tree was last year. Edge was mainly responsible for the JT remaster and is also involved with the first 3 albums.

I still consider myself really lucky last year 2 days after xmas. Managed to get hold of the Joshua Tree remastered edition deluxe set. It included a booklet, CD of outtakes(never previously released) and b-sides, and a DVD including a 1987 concert from Paris (excellent by the way) and mini-doco and videos. I mainly got it for these extras as I obviously already had the CD but then when I heard the re-mastered edition...wow. I really noticed how great it sounded. I'm therefore looking forward to the re-release of the first three albums especially if there's some good live versions of songs from the 1981, 82, 83 tours. (and of course for the b-sides that I either only have on record or don't have at all)

Personally I find that U2s best work was the one they put out prior to the Joshua Tree. After that, they grabbed too much media spotlight and became over hyped.

Even thought it's a decent album, the Joshua Tree might well be the most overrated album ever.

my all time favourite band before i discovered Muse, love both bands
really looking forward for their new record, i absolutely loved HTDAAB (How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb) and the JOSHUA TREE is the best album ever

please, don't hate me, I'm just a fan:LOL:

edit: i know many people don't like U2, but i have to tell, that it wasn't for U2 i would never know what good music is, without U2 my music taste would be totally crap, just listening to number one hits, summer hits, one hit wonders and stuff like that, you know those annoying songs you can hear on the radio all the time, i discovered rock and now I'm open for pretty much every type of music

yea, joshuas my favourite as well,

but the best one is with or without u, cause this song i always listen everytime when i went into a shower, and then bit one ( the song) as well,

Even thought it's a decent album, the Joshua Tree might well be the most overrated album ever.

no joshua not overated that much, its just that it isnt marketed properly to the people in the world, but u2 might be overated because of edge and bono, but theyre goin for some activisit and i think thats good for them as well...

Personally I find that U2s best work was the one they put out prior to the Joshua Tree. After that, they grabbed too much media spotlight and became over hyped.

Even thought it's a decent album, the Joshua Tree might well be the most overrated album ever.

I don't completely agree with you, but I do think you're right about Joshua Tree being overrated. Even though I love it and think its a great album, I think Achtung Baby is way better and far more deserving of the hype.
And plus, the cross dressing in the one video is awesome

Apparently it's supposed to be of a more experimental nature. Not necessarily Achtung sounding but similar to the way Achtung broke away and reinvented them (after the Joshua Tree)
I still would've preferred the album being released next month as originally planned. I remember how they restarted parts of both Pop and HTDAAB and how that ended up. Both albums had their moments but aren't in my top four.
Incidnetally my U2 top four is:
Joshua Tree
Unforgettable Fire (very underrated album)
Achtung Baby
All That You Can't Leave Behind.

How long have you been a fan MTJT?
I'm just curious. I don't think that it matters. What's your favourite album?
I've listed mine and I'm just interested in comparing notes.
I hope it is more "Achtung"-sounding, experimental.
The fact that Eno/Lanois are the producers augers well as I think that their best albums are the ones with that production team.

my fav albums are obviously Joshua Tree as in my username:D, but also HTDAAB (the one that made me become a fan;)), Achtung Baby and All That You Can't Leave Behind as well
I agree with you about The Unforgettable Fire, I just love Pride and Homecoming from that one;)
Eno/Lanois + U2 makes a great combination, lets hope the album is just as great:D and better than HTDAAB, I know they can do better

anyway lets hope both Muse's and U2's albums will be great, can't wait them to be released

To me "Get On Your Boots" is just recycling "Fast Cars" B-side and adding some random effects. I do like Fast Cars, and GOYB is quite enjoyable to, but Bono kinda ruins the chorus(Bridge? the you don't know how-part) for me.

Not as cool and Rock'n Roll-in-your-face as Vertigo or Elevation, but it'll do the job on the oncoming tour (hopefully).:)

You expected anything different? come on U2 should have gave up after Achtung Baby!

Do you wish they all died on a cross at 27? That would sure make them cooler. And immortal.

This new album has a continuity and depth that HTDAAB and ATYCLB didn't have. I really, really love it - no one song is better than listening to the album in its entirety which is so refreshing. I don't want to skip a single track! To begin with I didn't think Boots really fitted in with the whole flow of it all, but I can kind of see it now. I can't understand why they wanted it to be their first single though... hmm, though I suppose if they wanted some high energy pop song to open all the music award ceremonies that was it!

I got my (non-expensive) copy in the post this morning, I'll be damned if I'm going to shell out £45 for 11 songs! Roll on the tour!

I thought there would be more Europe dates though , Lisbon in Portugal would have been great (there are 2 stadiums), so now I don't know if I will be able to see them anywhere, that sucks, and why does it have to be stadiums all the time, they could also come to the Rockhal to Luxembourg (just like Depeche Mode on the 6th May), I know it's a small venue, but Muse have also played there and Queen+Paul Rodgers too, so why not U2, small doesn't mean shit, does it?

I thought I was gonna be happy all day, but instead I'm in a bad mood:(

I was a MASSIVE U2 fan in the '80s. Saw them live in '85 and '87. Back when you had to literally camp out for tickets. They were both great shows. But after Joshua Tree, they lost me, and I really never found my way back to them. Hubby bought All That You Can't Leave Behind, but I'm not crazy about it. And I checked out the new one from the library. Meh... took it back. They don't even sound like the same band. In fact, there are certain parts of Muse songs that I think sound more like U2 than U2 does. I was trying to get psyched up about them and give them another chance because I'm going to the Muse/U2 show in Atlanta in October, but I'm just not feelin' it. So I'll just be going as a Muse fan! :p

I'm glad they are playing more songs from 'The Unforgettable Fire', but it sure bums me out that they have completely forgotten about 'Boy'.

Why are they leaving 'New Years Day' out?

The problem with U2 is that they always play too many songs from the new albums.

They played a ton of Boy last tour so I don't picture them playing much from it again (with the exception of I Will Follow) any time soon. New Years Day will come back eventually. They're not going to play everything you want to hear. They're playing songs that havn't been played live in 10-15 years so there's no reason to be complaining about this set list. It's pretty much their strongest since PopMart. And yes they do play a lot from their new album which I don't mind. The new album is their best since Achtung Baby and playing a lot from the new album shows that they're still making relevant music.

I was at them last night and it was great!

Due to the ticket supplier messing us around we got upgraded tickets- we payed for £70 tickets and ended up with 150 euro tickets, pretty damn close to the stage too for seat tickets.

They apparently (according to my two friends who are much more into U2) played a really good setlist too, with Bad, New Year's Day and Stay (cool acoustic version!) all accounted for. It actually turned out there was no songs I didn't know, since they usually play Angel of Harlem or Desire but didn't yesterday night. Bad was the best song of the night imo, and Ultraviolet had an impressive light show.

I'll upload some pics if I get the chance. I only got pics of the stage before my phone camera claimed I had low battery and refused to take pictures. :( Luckily I still had enough to put them up before 'One'. Seeing everyone's phones up was awesome.

The two support acts were good as well, apparently the combination was the best of the three nights too. The Script were catchy of course and had good crowd reaction, and I have to say they used the stage well (the singer was REALLY HAPPY). Bell X1, who I was excited to see, were brill live, I was very pleased.

I reccomend you listen to 'Ultraviolet (Light My Way)' which they have just brought back for this tour. They've a good chance of playing 'Bad' as well, big fan favourite that one. Oh, and 'One'. Surely you've heard 'One'. If you haven't, you must.

U2 are great, one of my favourite bands. I saw them live 3 times (Elevation Tour, Vertigo Tour and this year), they're a great live band...if Bono doesn't start one of his "Save the World" speeches.

Hiya, saw them in Cardiff for the very first time :D (my very first concert ever actually) and I effing loved it, got into the pit, I'll be seeing them in Frankfurt again next August, got some waiting ahead of me too

:ninja: and I'm definitely sick of all those people constantly criticising them, if they don't like them, fine, but there's no need to repeat it over and over again , yeh that MTV EMA live stream yesterday was nothing for me, with that facebook thingy next to the stream with weird comments

At the shows I went to. (NYC # 1 and 2 muse opened) The first show my dad and I were up in the stands then for the second show we had GA. Front row outer pit. But once we got in, If we stayed in the pit we would've been 3rd row Adam's side.
