A wicked composer Frank was the conscience of rock the balls of comtempory orchestral music (the yellow shark is fucking cool) and the leftfield of jazz, man some of his bands were tight, some of the live versions of the black page are just unbelievable......those were the days.

My partner has the entire Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart back catalogue (when he gets obsessed with something, he really gets obsessed).

I love some of it (Peaches en Regalia) and absolutely hate some of it (Yellow Snow).

I'm impressed - here I am in my 30s and, as usual, if I want to find people who know anything about music I have to turn to you young whippersnappers on t'internet. Most people I know in their mid 20s-to mid-30s think I'm making it all up.

Anyway, for the uninitiated (and the initiated, come to think of it), here's my guide to 30 Zappa collections worth dipping into (yeh, I know it's a lot, but the guy's back catalogue is bigger than a very big thing):

The Lost Episodes 58 - 74
Lumpy Gravy c. 61 - Oct 67
Freak Out! Mar 66
Absolutely Free Nov 66
We’re Only In It For The Money Feb - Oct 67

Hot Rats Jul - Aug 69
Apostrophe (’) Mar 70 - 74

Just Another Band From L.A. Aug 71
Waka/Jawaka Apr - May 72
The Grand Wazoo Apr - May 72

Saw Zappa Plays Zappa last night, with Ray FREAKING White, and it was spectacularly awesome. The highlights were Joe's Garage, On the Bus, Cosmik Debris and Bamboozled By Love.

The band Dweezil put together is awesome, too. They were incredibly tight and looked to be having lots of fun. All in all, as close as it can get to a real Zappa show and I hope the Dweeze keeps doing it for many years to come.

This thread needs more recognition.

Zappa may not have been a particular nice guy - totally autocratic, at times very sexist amongst other things - but his contribution to music is incredible. So many of his compositions were original and never replicated music that had come before, though naturally there is influences he's drawn on.

I've been listening to him quite a lot recently. Hot Rats, We're Only in it For the Money, Weasels Ripped My Flesh and Waka/Jawaka in particular. I love the title track from Weasels, and the Son of Mr. Green Genes might just be the best instrumental I have ever heard.

There is a new album coming out, entitled 'Lumpy Money'. You can probably guess what it is, and I hope it will finally providedefinitive versions of both albums. There are so many botched versions of WOIIFTM, with overdubs and censorship and the like, so I really hope this one will finally be a mix with all of the original tracks, none of the censorship and a clear sound. It seems unlikely, but I can only remain hopeful. There is a short clip of the new Lumpy Gravy mix on the Zappa website and it sounds much more clear than any of the earlier pressings that I've heard. It's quite exciting, but they stupidly decided it would be a good idea to delay it, so we may have to wait a bit to hear it.

Why has a Frank Sinatra thread been merged with this one?

I've not been able to track down a definitive version of Lumpy Gravy and still haven't been able to listen to it properly. Do you know when Lumpy Money is coming out? I'm sure it'll be leaked at some point.

I find it difficult to work out how much censorship there is on the version of We're Only In It For The Money I've downloaded, it has 19 tracks on it and there doesn't appear to be too much taken out as far as I am aware.

Hot Rats is generally regarded as Zappa's masterpiece. It's not my favourite work of his - I would probably say The Grand Wazoo albums ranks right at the top, simply because I haven't heard a better jazz fusion album, or enjoyed listening to one as much as that. For Calvin (And His Next Two Hitchhikers and the title track are especially good; there's a strong vein of comedy running through this particular album, I feel).

I really enjoy The Eric Dolphy Memorial Barbecue from Weasels Ripped My Flesh, parts of it are rather sinister. Have you listened to the album Absolutely Free? It's between Freak Out and We're Only....and is probably his most orchestral for that particular time period, you can see the framework being set for later work.

As far as I'm aware, there isn't really a definitive version available at the moment. There is a website somewhere documenting all of the pressings available and how they are are all different to the master tape in some way. Lumpy Money is supposed to have two unreleased mixes of both albums by Zappa, with some outtakes from the era and an alternative (orchestral, I think) recording of Lumpy Gravy that was never released in its entirety. But I've no idea when it is due out. It was delayed with no specific date being given.

There are some really notable parts as far as censorship is concerned. During Concentration Moon, the short spoken passage by the engineer is usually missing out a short line about the Velvet Underground in the censored versions. There's also a part near the end of Harry, You're a Beast with the line "don't come in me, in me" being repeated a few times which is invariably edited with the tracks being mixed both normally and backwards, making it irreversable. The only version that has the line as it should be heard is a remix from the '80s, but that has overdubbed drum and bass tracks, and they don't quite fit in to the style of the original as well as they could.

It's my favourite of his fusion albums (hence the last.fm username), it has the best wind parts I have ever heard from Ian Underwood and it was recorded extremely well (the Beefheart cameo is also a good thing), but I don't think Zappa had fully matured as a composer by that point. On the Grand Wazoo and Waka/Jawaka, the pieces are all far more elaborate and go beyond just being fairly straight-forward jams, which probably works in their favour. I would have liked them more if the mastering and production were as good as Hot Rats, but I guess I can settle for them being the way they are.

Tracks like the Dolphy tribute are so strange that they make the album name seem normal. I still cannot decide if I prefer Weasels or Burnt Weeny Sandwich. I've got Absolutely Free but haven't listened to it, inexplicably. I will get around to it sooner or later.
