Derren Brown is much better than David fucking Blaine. What a twat.
highllama!
08-05-2004, 08:18 AM
I missed most of it - I only saw the part where the film student (I think?) thought that Derren was invisible and started to make that creepy doll dance or whatever.
I don't get that telephone thing though...you know, when people pick it up and just collapse? Good to see that the Great British public are there to help them though
Isn't David Blaine supposed to be jumping out of a helicopter into a river or something soon? I'm sure it could be easily sabotaged :p

I thought that. It was no séance, but, it did have that great Derren Brown tongue in cheek "morons, the lot of you" humour which was great.
He also looked mighty fine in th pinstripe suit!
I liked the way he convinced everyone though. Are they the naive ones, or are we the naive ones for trusting that it wasn't all set up?

It was this one that really started me thinking...he says it's fake to us, so we all feel fine with it. Yeah he can do mind control and knows the power of suggestion and how to get information out of us without us realising but it's not like he's pyschic.
Then I started to think, what if he's double bluffing and actually it is all real, but he doesn't want all to know? So he tells us it's fake and we all believe him. Hmmm, I'm thinking too much I reckon!

I was a bit underwhelmed by it; he didn't do anything he hasn't done before, just in a different guise. He's a cracking cardician but he's just dropped all that in the past 3 years or so, now he's just seems out to try and irritate people. Don't get me wrong, I still love him though. Derren Brown is seriously good at what he does. Have a friend who's an amateur magician, and he has a great deal of respect for the guy. He said Derren Brown has a book which explains some of the simpler techniques; I've had a look round but never managed to find it.

He's released 2 books...Pure effect and..the other one..
He's released a Video as well, availible through his site
The card tricks he does are fairly simple, which give me hope, cus the rest blows me away.
Anyway trick one: The three of clubs was on the top of the pile, but when he was counting through he put that one slightly to the side of the other cards. He put the others on top, but the 3 was sticking out.
Misdirection: as the guy looked at the paper Derren pulled out the 3 of clubs instead of the top card the man had effectively chosen. Derren moved it forward, dude turns it over and hey presto. Magic
Also the second card would have been the ace of spades, whatever card the man chose Derren would move into his hand because he's "eager to see if it's the right card" and swap it with the ace prom under his sleeve from the trick before. The whole, turn over a few more cards to make sure, is another great way of misdirecting people, giving them a different thing to think about.
Anyone who knows how he got "pop" gets 15 and a half gold stars...

Neuro linguistic Programming....LIke on the Messiah one, Download it....
He says things like " Let it SAIL into your mind and don't go OVERBOARD"..
Guess what, the other guy choses a boat.
But still, to get a page with that word in is rare don't you think?
i mean i saw that derren bent the book back and gave it to the guy to flick through. So he picked a double page for him, but the rest seemed chance.
Is it to do with the same logic that he got simon peg? the i'm going to bike you a gift, like a BM or an X box?

Date: Sunday 29th May
Programme: Derren Brown: The Gathering
Channel/Time: It's on Channel 4 at 10pm
Description 1: There's no one quite like Derren Brown. He can convince complete strangers to hand over their car keys and even get hold of their PIN numbers!
In this one-off special, Derren Brown: The Gathering, the mind manipulator is shown doing what he does best - baffling everyone with his special brand of magic.
Derren creates a world of confusion in a recorded live show. His audience includes psychics, celebs and illusionists.
"This is a taste of what I do on tour," says Derren. "Hopefully it'll be memorable for all concerned."
Description 2: The magician faces his greatest challenge yet as he performs mental trickery in front of a sceptical audience, including conjurors, psychologists and celebrities. The location of the one-hour show is a sercret and, as the film will be recorded live, Derren will have little control over how his stunts pan out...
So that's tonight then. Can't wait.

this was because he put a plastic bag over his head until his pulse stopped!! meaning obviously no oxygen flowing to his brain and he felt no pain...he lay down on the glass and a random audience member stood on him and his head!!

No he doesn't use actors. it's really simple, if he does use actors, think how much he'd have to pay to silence them, it just wouldn't be worth it.
There are many methods (instant stooging, DR etc) but it's pretty much against his ethics as a magician, plus he's extremely well known in the buisness and in various circles who'd suspect something.

Haha, yeah. That man is a genius, I wish I could do half the things he does. I study Psychology, and he stilled fooled me in every way.
Half of it though, like the nail up the nose thing.. how much of it do you think is actually suggestion or not. I mean... man puts nail near nose, instantly you flinch because no sane person would do that, so because you're so busy thinking "oh my god the man is hammering a nail up his nose!" perhaps you don't realise how much of it's actually gone up and your mind has filled the gaps in. Especially with the added OTT nose blowing at the end.
There is no questioning that the man is highly intelligent and an excellent showman though.

The nail part did have me wondering yes, as did the walking on glass, but astill very impressive - even if it is suggestion fooling people.
Derren Brown would undoubtedly be the scariest friend you could ever make, just think of how easily he could manipulate you.

I'm really not sure about the dream thingy. From what my Sleep module of my degree taught me, extrenal conscious stimuli don't have any effect on the content of an individual's dreams - in fact, not even internal bodily states have an effect, for instance, men while in REM sleep, usually (well, almost always really) have an erection, and during most dreams men aren't erect :) - still derren is a bit special in the way he can introduce things into people's minds, so I dunno :p
Hmm I didn't think it was one of his best episodes. The dream bit was a bit funny though. :)

Watched the Heist again tonight. It's definitely one of his better specials - right up there with Messiah. I do like Russian Roulette and Seance but to me he makes valid points in both Messiah and the Heist that are relevant to society today.

I got back from the performance awhile ago and it was amazing. I absolutely loved it and I would love to go again.
One of my favourite parts of the show was the one with the broken glass. I was cringing when he was lying on it and this guy stood on him.
For the buttons trick, one girl didn't feel comfortable with slapping him hard so another girl had to come on and slap him very hard. To Derren, it felt as though she punched him instead of slapping him.
I got to meet him backstage and had my programme signed. My dad took a few photos that's posted below. I managed to tell him my name and say thank you for the autograph but didn't manage to say how great his show was.:$ I wanted to but I couldn't get it out, damn nerves. Seeing him live was amazing and meeting him was a bonus. :D

This is now a generic Derren Brown thread. Yes.
I hope he's on tele again next year. :)

I might see him on tour next year, as I've been meaning to for ages now.
:stunned:
Have you met him?
And yes, he knocks Blaine for six.
I've met him. Got my dvd signed too :yesey:
Definitely go see his show if you can Max. I've seen him twice .. both times amazing. :D

Hmm I'd like to see him again, but only if it's a different show.

I love Derren Brown.
I'd love to see him live, especially after watching the show last night. Part of me wouldn't want to get picked on, and then part of me would, just to see if would act the way he's expecting/influencing you to.

Only to half smile and wave at :( But if I go to her new year party tomorrow I might get to talk to him properly, not sure if he's going
You can't exactly say to someone "I'd love to come to your party but only if your famous mate's gonna be there"
 Was he there? Cool if he was. When I met him back in May I didn't know what to say.

ooer yeah it does, to be honest I was always a bit not so sure about the zombie game thing they did that time :stunned:
I mean I know they get consent and everything but that does sound a bit.....hmmm....

Well it's the kind of thing that could mentally scar her for life, but he's done loads of stunts that could do that to people in the past...so I won't really complain about it. :erm:

That doesn't sound like the sort of thing he would do. He's usually quite careful about the consequences of his 'stunts'.

Yeah Channel 4, 10pm. Infact I don't think its a new series just one of those specials hes done like The Heist and Russian Roulette.
Its called "Trick or Treat" this is the infomation I could find on it:
In this brand new series Derren Brown is at his most devilish, having persuaded members of the public to sign a Faustian pact with him and participate in a macabre game of Trick or Treat
Hmmm.. :erm:

It sounds a bit gimmicky. But then that's what Derren Brown's basically all about.
