In quite a few songs (particularly Falling Down) Matt seems to be singing about how much he disliked the town he grew up in, Teignmouth. I'm just wondering, has anyone here been to this town and why is it so awful? Were Matt, Dom and Chris just rebelious teenagers trying to escape the confinement of small town life, or was there something completely awful about the place????

They were just being typical teens, winy and rebellious. Even his voice in Showbiz is winy. :p

Good point. I mean, everyone hates the town they grew up in, don't they? Hmmm... I was reading this book (something on British towns and what not) and it said that Teignmouth was pronouced 'Tin-muth'. I always thought of it as 'Tine-mouth'. Unlogical foolish founders...

The town i live in was featured in that book, "The 50 worste towns in Britain"
My town is no.8 I beleive, Bexhill on Sea.
They say its shit because its all old people, but that was the past (and besides, i didnt mind that)- the real problem is that because it was all old people, the townies have come and taken over. Whereas in a big town there are adults and Uni age people walking around town, in Bexhill it is a townie free-for-all, where i can't go out without being spat at/kicked etc.
Scum, utter scum

Yes, it is pronounced Tin-mouth :P!
I do understand if they complained about it, I've been there. It is close to where I used to live (Exmouth) and although beautiful, there is nothing much to do, especially for teenagers.

Okay, you wont beleive how bad they are.
They are wherever population is.
They wear tracksuits, caps tilted up at 45 degrees and have earings and tuck their tracky bottoms into their socks.
If a boy walks past them (they are found in groups) you will get called "prick" "cunt" "dickhead" and possibly they will try and start a fight.
About 3 weeks ago, i walked off home, and 2 of my mates went to walk to their houses, and some townies just beat them up, just like that.
They exist ONLY to cause trouble, i cant stress that enough.
www.chavscum.co.uk - That site basically explains it all. The fact that such a site (and there are many) exists, is proof enough of the blight they are on this nation

My grandparents used to live in Teignmouth, it was a very pretty seaside town, I thought it was nice when I went there, strikes me that there wouldn't have been much there for teenagers though (I was very young and only there for a few days however).

A friend of a friend went there in '93 and said:
a)She went to a restaurant by the name of Ho Lee Fook. :D
b)Half of the town is very nice.
c)The other half resembles Ballymun. Which is a pointless comparison unless you've been to Dublin...

The best thing about Teignmouth is the railway line that runs along the back of the beach. It's a fantastic run along the estuary from Exeter before you turn inland. In winter, the waves can break over the train which is pretty bloody scary.

I went to Teignmouth on tuesday night, I slept in my friends car next to the beach. It's quite as death there but it seems nice. Pretty and things.
We were looking for a sign that they knew who Muse where, but we didn't find anything other than the NME with Bellamy on the cover.

Just to pitch in here. As someone who spent 18 years in the area and 7 years at Teignmouth Community College, I can say Teignmouth is a dump to a teen living there all year round. Same with much of south Devon though. Semi-rural, so you have to travel to get to anywhere decent and the place is shut down in the winter as it's a tourist area and the coastal weather can be miserable at times. Still, the amusement arcades were a good waste of time, and the flea-pit cinema (now closed :().

It was indeed for me the kind of place you wanted to escape, and that's why I moved from the area (though more in search of a decent wage). My parents still live there though and I visit frequently. I suppose when I get old though it's the kind of place to go and retire ;)

P.S. I've looked for evidence of Muse but there's little about. They get a small mention in the local press now and again but not much.

Oh, and yes, it's generally "tin-mouth" or even "tin-moth". Even though the name comes from it being at the mouth of the river Teign and that's pronounced 'Teen'.

Just wish I had Glastonbury tickets though :( (on the other hand looking at the weather, maybe not ;))

P.S. I've looked for evidence of Muse but there's little about. They get a small mention in the local press now and again but not much. The most I know about them comes from my dad who knew them at school (being one of the teachers). I was busy with A levels when they were in the first few years of school and knew nothing of them until I'd long since left. I have to say I'm impressed though at not only their success but in being so damn good.

I havent been to Teignmouth, but when i went to see the muse gig in Exeter in december, every adult person i spoke to was going on about stereophonics playing there three weeks before. They didnt have a clue who muse were. stereophonics my arse.

And when i finally met someone who knew they were from "tin-moth" it took me ten seconds to understand what they meant.

I live just down the road from Teignmouth. It's true there are some negative aspects to the town but generally the people are really cool, I made some really good friends there. Although there seems to be this really down-to-earth cynycism everywhere and it sounds weird but its really cool cos everybody seems to stick together. Teignmouth is definitely a very very unusual town, but the people really are cool (or the people i met anyway).

Wow! Sorry this is a little off-topic, but that is an exact description of Ireland's skangers! Cap at 45 degrees says it all!
They're in every town... In our town, they say "Nyaa boi, where's yer schcap boi?" *schcap being cap. They can be pretty evil to who they think and call 'grungers'.... *sigh*

It's usually Tin-muth/moth to the locals.

Strictly speaking it should be Teen-mouth, as it's the mouth of the river Teign which is pronounced Teen (not 'tin' or 'tane') and the district is Teignbridge (teen-bridge usually, though sometimes called tin-bridge).

P.S. There's a word the locals used to refer to tourists, 'Grockle' ;). I believe the word may have found it's way into other parts of the country but it's supposed to originate from the south devon area.

Blimey I've even heard of a Bryony being mentioned.. used to know one who lived down my road too although that'll be someone else.

Haven't heard from Flo officially since last new year haha although she randomly rang me the other month! If you see her tell her I'm doing the boyfriend (as in the musical) at the moment, since I don't think I have her current number.

Sad when you lose contact with your best friend :( Think we're kinda both moved on now :(

Yes, it is pronounced Tin-mouth :P!
I do understand if they complained about it, I've been there. It is close to where I used to live (Exmouth) and although beautiful, there is nothing much to do, especially for teenagers.

My mum is FROM Teignmouth, and pronounces it "Tin-Muff", because she has, like I, a very strong west country accent!

Teignmouth is a town that I spent my childhood and teenage years growin g up in.

I was close mates with Matts 2 cousins and spent many a night sat around listening to Matt playing piano and guitar and I always thought that he had 'something', how right was I ??

The town is smallish, population of approx 25000 I think, the town centre is a little drab but it is what it is, a typical Southern seaside town. The pier is good for a walk and a game on some retro arcade machines, the shops are good fun but you soon get bored.

As a teenager, we used to sit about under the pier drinking Special Brew and throwing up shortly afterwards.....

I used to do Karate with Dom in the late 1980's at a sports centre called 'Broadmeadow', those were the days.....

The town is great fun for a couple of days but as a kid, I was bored easily and took to other ways of passing the time, wheelie bin races, setting fire to bins, drinking, smoking dope and other such kid like pleasantries....

I am glad to have moved from the town as there are so many who will die there having not really achieved a great deal.

Cheers

The best thing about Teignmouth is the railway line that runs along the back of the beach. It's a fantastic run along the estuary from Exeter before you turn inland. In winter, the waves can break over the train which is pretty bloody scary.

my friend and I went to teighnmouth - it's a bit bleak in the winter but I imagine it would be alright in the summer. Not the most thirilling of places to actually live. But that railway is awesome. Did you know it's the most expensive piece of track to maintain in the WHOLE of britain?

off topic..doesn't Torquay sound like it should be abroad? Ya think?

There's a torquay near melbourne and unlike your torquay, it is sunny all year round...and has proper sand....and proper waves...and is generally nicer. It does not, however, have Kent's Cavern up the road, which I think counts against it.

Scum, utter scum

the town next to mine featured in that i cant remeber when it was but it said something along the lines of Huntingdon where people from east germany go to remeber what it used to be like in the good ol days..
and it was on the cover of britains crappiest towns 2:rolleyes:

and Teignmouth cant be that bad theyv'e got the sea we just have a lot of traffic old people and chavs...

I'm from Exeter and I say it Ting-muff. I think it's one of those places you go if you really haven't got anything better to do. There is one pub I like there, I'm not sure what its name is, maybe something to do with a ship in the name?
It's nice to sit under the pier at times, but I can imagine growing up there would be hell.

Excellent pics, a great find !!

I used to live about 20 metres froim where the first photo was taken, a small village called Shaldon, just over the bridge, fantastic unspoiled views of the seafront, I could even see my mates sat outside the pier through my super powered telescope, great fun for calling them on the mobile and then saying that I am watching them from afar !!

Thanks for posting the pics, great stuff!!

I will be back in Devon after Wembley, can't wait to take a walk on the prom with a bag of chips and a bottle of pop !!

Ah, the good old sports centre. Remember the school used to use it for stuff like badmington and squash and we'd have to walk half way across the town to get to it. Or if you couldn't be bothered with sports you'd take a detour via the pier and arcades in the centre of town instead :D

p.s. might have been in your year or maybe year below.

I think all small villages that are known for having lots of turists in the summer have the same problem - terribly boring the rest of the year. I'm not surprised to hear Teignmouth is no exception. Although the friends you make, for example, do make a difference and can give you lots of good memories about a place.

Yep., we used to do Badminton in the 5th year and it entailed walking from the school to the sports centre in our lunch hour to get their for the lesson after lunch !!

Then it would take us longer to get back and as a result would often miss a quarter of the 4th lesson !!

I left the place in 1988, we were the 1st year to sit the GCSE type exams.....

Been there a few times on holiday while down visiting relatives in Exeter. Nice enough place to go for a couple of hours on a nice day in the summer. Can well imagine it's a different story if you lived there, especially out of season. Where I live has the same kind of vibe going on; lovely for an afternoon, hellish if you're a teenager. Why I'm still here as an adult... some bizarre Royston Vasey type hold over me perhaps... Ultimately Teignmouth struck me as much like anywhere else. Bugger all to do if you're young except hang around and dream about the big wide world out there.

Defintely pronounced Tin muth. Funnily enough, the place pronounced Tine Mouth (Tynemouth) is very similar, it's just the same sort of arrangement but up north instead, on the coast, nice beach and day out sort of place.

Ha Ha,

He used to do Karate with 2 mates, one kid called Julian and another called Paul, I used to fancy Paul's sister like mad !!

We used to mess about and as I was 17 at the time, I used to let Dom and his mates punch and kick the hell out of me (it didn't really hurt), I recall him being a white belt when I got there but I don't remember him going much further.

The Karate instructor waqs a lady called Gayle (I think her surname was Rockett), good times !!

I was in the 2nd year of GCSE in 1989. I remember the mock exams were mostly still O-levels though some of the ones you must have done we got as mocks as well.

I stayed on for A levels though so left in 1991.

You may be bombed by a seagull after your chips, you may not find the high street exiting (unless charity shops do it for you) you may get biddy blocked in the isle of the Coop (penned in by two or more Pensioners, i think they work in teams) You may find your self wondering why you find yourself in a club that is no bigger than a shoe box. It may be a bit slow, the local council may not be transparent and it may creak if it moves too fast but Teignmouth is a exellent place to live and right now i would not want to move away unless it was out of the uk.

There's an old Norman Wisdon film (movie) called "Press for time" which is based in a town called Tinmouth and was filmed in Teignmouth. Fellow Teignmothians note the glaring geographical errors - as the bus goes from being in Wellington Street then heads south over Shaldon Bridge down the hill to The Ness car park which then leads past the yacht club.

The younger generation might recognise The Cellars Bar to the left of the roundabout - which isn't there any more - long before Carol's time

Here's a link if you want to watch it >http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AfboS7KPO-8
