Thought it would be nice for everyone to share their knowledge about festivals, in particular, things to bring for the festival etc.
So yeah, I'll start off, keep the thread clean from banter (use the reading/leeds thead for banter), i'll add whatever people have said to the first post so everyone will have a nice experience
Essential Things To Bring
Here's a list of things that are essential for festivals, try and keep them in "weekend quantities", afterall, you are travelling light. its a bitch bringing too much stuff. Another tip is to make sure EVERYTHING you bring is something you dont mind parting with or getting completely ruined. so no fancy clothes. always assume that you'll be soaking wet with all your gear stolen.
Yourself: - the rest is useless if you're not there
Your tickets: - no ticket no entry (unless you're guestlisted)
Your travel tickets: - no travel no entry (unless you walk)
Cash: - probably the most important thing is cash, best to leave your wallet filled with cards and important stuff at home, just have cash about for purchasing stuff, but yeah, most important thing in case of any emergancy (out of loo roll, food, lost travel tickets etc)
Tent: make sure you've got a complete tent set and all, practice in your garden to make sure its all complete, make sure you know what you're using for banging pegs down, rocks are usually good, but a mallet if you have one handy
Loo paper:- a must, last thing you want to do is run out of that, perfect for spills and wiping human fluids.
Baby wipes: - slightly different from loo paper, these babies will make sure you stay fresh for the festival
Torch: - essential for the dark
Mobile phone: - keep the phone tacky and full of battery, there are spots for you to recharge and all obviously
Plastic bags: - carry a few, they'll be useful for throwing stuff away or collecting stuff, they also double up as socks when its really wet
Bin liners: - the bigger bag, more strong and useful
Gaffer tape: - perfect for fixing you tent or sealing your pockets during gigs
Raincoat/poncho: - better then brollies, always assume festivals to be wet
Warm clothes: - its cold at night, get nice and snuggly
Extra clothes: - socks and underwear in particular, socks mainly, one for each day might not be a good idea at times.
Towel: - dry and also can be used as a pillow or headgear
Sleeping matt/lilo:- nice back and all
Large bottles for collecting/exposing water
Firelighters, to start fires (useful ones)
Suncream when its sunny...
Tough String:- useful for tying stuff up and can be used as a washing line if it rainsHere are some optional things you could bring:
Condoms, safe love
Lube... especially if you're into bum love
Dyodrant, stay fresh
Padlock, extra safe tents involve padlocking the zips, though it might piss people off
Wellies, always assume its wet, they look cool too if its dry and sunny. Wont get ruined and perfect for keeping your feet dry from wet mud
Pro plus: stay awake to see more acts and all
Surf board: for crowd surfing
Laptop: for surfing
DS Lite: for wifi battlesFood/Drinks
Next up is the food and drinks, sometimes its just best to buy from a local supermarket at the festival, but here are soem thigns to buy:
Lots of water! useful for washing yourself up and drinking, vital to have at least 2litres per person, per day
Biscuits: the daddy of survival, biscuits superceded corned beef as teh vital ration ever since the CJB outbreak
Cereal bars, very rich in nuetrients and will keep you going most of the time.
Gum: stay fresh, no stinky breathe
In metal gear solid 3, you'll notice that one of the best rations for snake in the game apart from rats and those random crab are the instant noodles. So perhaps these if you'd like some hot food in your stomachThings you must do
Some stuff you need to do before, during and after the festival
Before:
Make sure you know how to get there, plan your journeys, if you've got tickets already, make sure you arrive early so you wont miss it
Make sure you check everything from the checklist, last thing you want to do is forget you've brought loo paper and be forced to use leaves
Charge all eletrical stuff, mobile in particular. Bring batteries for things such as cameras
Plan the places you want to go, its annoying planning at the gig, most festivals release time tables before hand so you can plan, they obviously change on the day so keep that in mind too
Flush your digestive systems out, keep it empty so you wont use the toilet much
Having said that, eat lots too, make sure you have enough energy
Sleep alot! its going to be a long weekendAt the festival
This one is important, remember the landmark and area you've camped your tent in, take a photo of the area if you like, just to make sure it sticks into your head. Most people will be using the same tent they bought from argos (This one haha) (http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/3409086.htm) so you'll need to make sure you've put something on the tent that makes it recognisable to you. Glow in the dark is a good idea but might be bad as it attracts attention
Have a meeting point when you're at the festival, usually thats back at the camp site, however its better to have one at the festival too so you dont need to hike your way back, its however best to just stick together.
Dont camp near paths, drunken people might fall onto it and its an easy for people to steal your things
Its handy to camp near the toilets if you dont mind the smell, though it WILL stink on day 3
Camping in a high spot may prevent your tent from being flooded
Be friends with the people aroudn you, setup a neighbourhood watch type thing in case people start stealing stuff
Guys, go take a manwash http://www.lynxboost.com/locator.php , would love to check that place out, mainly for feeling ultra refreshed. not for the ladies, some of them look butter and most likely tired from washing smelly rockers
Enjoy the gigAfter the festival
Clean up, be nice to the environment :P
Make sure you have everything, last thing you want to do is go "SHIIIIIT" in a train carridge because you left your wallet or girlfriend at the festival
Throw all your garbage away, you're tired already, last thign you wanna do is lug garbage with youEnd
So yeah, help complete the thread

I would say a good tip is to know ho you are going with. If its a group of people, how are you getting there etc? Also, have a meeting up spot in case you get seperated during the day.

Gaffer tape - useful for repairs if your tent is slashed/damaged, sticking bin bags to your legs a la Bellamy etc.
Painkillers or other medication that you need.

A roll mat/lilo is essential for warmity and comfort.
A mallet, in case you end up having to pitch on shitloads of rocks.
Some large bottles for collecting water with.
Firelighters are great if it's all wet and shit.
Velouria
22-08-2006, 11:07 AM
Try not to camp near paths (less chance of wasted n00bs falling on your tent or opportunist thieves striking), and though it may seem handy to camp near the toilets you might not appreciate the stench by day three. ;)

Empty plastic bottles are useful for filling with water from the campsite points, or alcohol if you want to sneak it into the arena area.
I know it doesen't look likely at the moment, but taking Sun cream could prove a very wise thing.
Cereal bars and crisps will keep you going. Forget about the diet - you can't eat healthily at a festival.

oh forgot to ask, wil there be lockers there, because i'll probably bring a bag for the day, but can't be arsed to lug it round with me

Save your paper pint cups from the arena. They're handy for weeing in if you can't be arsed to walk to the bogs in the middle of the night.

Extra socks - you can never have more than enough socks at a festival
Velouria

For Reading day festival goers, make sure that you check the time of your last train home. There is engineering work going on over the bank holiday, so timetables may have changed.

Stay away from gutters with your tent aswell.
I was lucky for putting my tent on a high spot, others had the water to their ankles inside their tents last sunday.

small plastic bottles...for your spirits, as you cant take glass in with you.
mixers for those of you who dont like your spirits neat.
some shorts...you wont want to spend all weekend in a pair of jeans.
spare contact lenses/hearing aid batteries..contact lense solution/contact lense case
glasses for when you take your lenses out
a pillow!
small mirror for contact lense application

Speaking form experience, DO NOT leave lenses in longer than you're supposed to. They dry up and get stuck to your eyeballs

yeah but glasses : :noey: :noey: because of the risk to break them and cut your eyes if you find yourself involved in a pogo or something

My glasses survived a fairly bouncy gig - granted they kept sliding down my nose because I was all hot and sweaty
But out of the two, I'd choose glasses. Anyway, lenses don't help my vision much so it's a lot of hassle for nothing.
And you need to put them in and take them out in really clean conditions - you can't guarantee that at a festival so I'd say don't do it.

Contact lenses at a festival = :noey:
I'll be wearing mine, but I never feel happy about the idea. I've worn this pair slightly longer than a month, so that after the festival I can throw them straight away. I managed last year, so hopefully it'll be ok again.
But to re-interate what indie said: spare lenses, so,llution and cases would be a very good idea. I'd also recommend small plastic sandwhich bags to keep the case in so it doesen't get dirty. Use wet-wipes to clean your hands, but rinse them off afterwards with clean water (to get rid of any soap residue), then put in your lenses.

ive seen this contact lense vs glasses debate on this forum before!
i had no trouble with contact lenses at v2004..they are soft lenses so if i got clouted in a mosh id be fine after a while..
so long as i wash my hands before application i wont be getting any dirty festival related eye infection...
and if im clever il get some disposable lenses today so i can just flick them out of my eyes in a drunken stupor before passing out on my sleeping bag!

if your not planning on moshing then by all means wear your backpack with pride..

So, we can't take water bottles into the arena then? So I may as well just bring myself, money and a ticket? Hows about food-ie stuffs?

I'm going to buy food there... there's a list of the food prices up on the Reading festival website (www.readingfestival.com) and it's too much hassle for me to carry it.

With drinks, you can buy bottles on site can't you? Are there taps and stuff there to get water from?

Yeah I think so... I read on the website (I'm a fest virgin too) that there's free water around the site from taps.

That's ok then, I'll but one bottle, then drink from taps the rest of the time. Easy.

You're not allowed to bring bottles of any kind into the arena are you?
I'm trying to figure out a way of smuggling alcohol into the arena... I can't remember how I did it all the years before.

used to be easy cos they'd only search you at about 7pm least at leeds that was the case. obviously for a lady the hardest way to get detected would be to buy a massive bra and put one of those bags of wine in each cup. infact i might invent the wine bra thats a bloody good idea.

Well I think what I did was get one of those 35cl bottles of vodka, pre-mix something into it and then hide it like you would a hip flask.
