Cubase comes with one?

Otherwise, try the TAL one, though I'm having issues getting their VSTs to work on a Mac even though they should.

yeah, try the tal vocoder, i reckon its better than the cubase one. their plugins are all good actually, easy to use.

i posted 1 minute clips of two songs that will be released with our 5 song demo bundle (or whatever you would call it). I am still mixing so the mix is still a little rough.

take a listen and tell me what you think. I personally love how overly gay and emo they are.

Here is a very noisy/glitchy track I made which is about 8 minutes long. Excluding the drums every sound you hear on it is a Game Boy's sound chip being pushed to it's limit, with a load of slicing and effects being wanked all over it - http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?iz4o4mzdzoi

Yeah, tis a weird venue where the stage is kind of circular and the room wraps around it... The upshot being that the crowd is shallow but very wide and the dancing is spread out - there were loads of crusties going mental off to the right

It's quite late so I've only got it fairly quiet. Drums could maybe do with beefing up a little, but the guitars sound good.

I don't think you want me to honestly answer whether I can do it better lol.

It sounds ok though, I'm certainly digging the guitar tones, the drums are pretty flat, but you could easily beef them up with a bit of sidechain compression etc.

Bass was a bit low, you could probably do with hitting it with a limiter and kicking it up a few dB.

It just needs a bit more work it sounds like you certainly did a good enough job capturing the sound anyway

OK so here's (http://www.bebo.com/misterp1nk) my band's new (and very incomplete) Bebo page. It's fairly lulzy.

There's one song (I use that term very loosely) up there - Sunshine and Flowers. Just me and the bassist fucking around one evening.

A very radio-friendly, catchy tune inspired by the likes of Aphex Twin and Nine Inch Nails.

All instruments and vocals were recorded in one take with the song taking around 20 minutes to complete. The inspirational lyrics were improvised in a compelling vocal performance by Donald Gunn.

Enjoy.

Prepare for the Attack (http://dl-client.getdropbox.com/u/67320/07%20Prepare%20for%20the%20Attack.mp3).

I wrote this song about a year and a half ago, just after I released my third album. However, because I recorded it on my recording studio, I wanted to retry with Garageband.

Took me a day, and it's still not COMPLETELY finished (need to add backing vocals), but it's got about five different guitar parts, three bass, drums, four vocals (for compression), Piano, Synth, and strings.

Anyway, yeah... looking for feedback to improve it, as I hope to make a music video for it at college next term, which would be cool.

Yeah it is. The QC didn't even have to stop gigs, they did it out of choice:mad:
But I majorly prefer the marquee to QC so it all works out well

Can't say i've ever played either venue. I know we're playing a "Showcase with Kapok" on the 28th may at the Marquee, only time i've been there is to leave my bike as my friends mum, works there or something like that. Were you the person in the blue hoody at B2 last saturday? If it was then unlucky for attending such a bad gig of ours and enduring PSK past and present.

Nah I couldn't go in the end, it was my friends 18th so we had a party at his (which is about a 2 minute walk to the B2 so I was close:p)

That's alright then, if you're free this wednesday we're finally headlining this year after many months. At B2 again and with good bands. 3 Entry and try and bring lots of people along. I'm also working on trying to get you on the bill for the gig with industry, i still need to win the others round as it looks like they want to get fraternity or stuck in conflict if you've heard of them. They're both fairly good bands who seem to love us and want to gig with us since playing with them last weekend.

Keep fighting them!;) I was meant to play a gig with stuck in conflict a while ago.
Tell them that if they let me play then Ill play a cover of Fury by Muse on game boys, despite B2's strict no covers policy;)
I'll try and make it on Wednesday, and bring a few friends along:)

Its took nearly half a year to do, one riff and a decent drum part makes all the difference.

ohai guys

just revamped an old song i had done, (funnily enuogh last august lol)

it was when i had first got my carvin, the guitars were all done with pod x3 live, and it was some logic instruments.

the 'acoustic' guitar at the end is actually the piezo on the carvin di'd with a lil bit of comp, eq and reverb.

strings are logic

the staticy part at the start is an instrument i made faffing about with one of the synths on logic

drums are toontrack superior

bass is logic

anyway, hope you like it!

i'd be interested to see what chris (theman361) has to say about it and shizzz plz

really nice bass timbre in the intro. the drums sound kinda empty though when they start compared. the guitar tone and some things about the mix in general remind me epicly heavily of joe satriani circa engines of creation (listen if you havent... you'll see what i mean.. it may also be the modes you are playing in, VERY similar though)... guitar is a nice tone and well balanced.. it fits well, as its definitely the focus of the piece.

with a more powerful / heavier mixed drum stem id really like the track. the interlude sounding part towards the end has some kinda overpowering synth strings i might tone down a bit (didnt seem to fit so well) but overall i really liked it. very satriani esque, definitely. i like the reverb, but i assume that was space designer? those lead tones really are very good. jmp i assume? how did you record it?

Oooh awesome, ta for listenings!

Righto well I have no Satch at all, I probably should get some however!

Drums I have been severely lazy with, not gonna lie about that its the superior samples done with a stereo out and no processing, so that's why they're pretty wank sounding.

Gotta love how you keep comparing me to Satriani btw :awesome:

Guitar was actually Pod X3 on this, back before I got the JMP, I did this track last August, I just added some more bass and drums tried to tie it up a bit, before the whole second half had no rhythm section just guitar lol.

Reverbs are I think actually the AVerb plug in Logic, or they could well be space designer. I'll check and get back to you on that one

Tempted to agree with you about those strings now you mention it so I'll drop those down.

Will work on the drums see what I can do with it!

Andd I'll get some Satch

ooooh i have clouds race across the sky on now, i completely see what you mean, that is very interesting indeed! this is a really pretty song aswell, thats even MORE instrumental guitar music i'm gonna have to get now  lol

i'm gonna go grab my jmp and try it out with some impulses just now I think by the way, if I get some decent tones going i'll hook you up with some clips and send you the impulses if you like them

edit: also on the JMP front, I get a very similar tone live with it to the kinda stuff I had going on the pod with that recording, yours should sound even better with the 20/20 thats for sure.

worth noting aswell the kinda lead tones i like to dial in are absolutely horrid for chords because they tend to be very mid heavy and get too muddy

ideal lead tone for me tends to be very much like Frank Gambale/Allan Holdsworth, the very bizarre thing is that they have both used the Mesa studio pre and got that sort of tone, yet for me I couldn't get it, I guess it must've been a matter of poweramp with that though.

yeh i think the key to a good solo tone is also in the mids, cant scoop them.. but its not something youd play chords on :p
hopefully the jmp will sound good with my 20/20 if it ever arrives! i have a bad feeling about the guy i bought it from (he said the paypal funds didnt clear when i bought it, and i dont think they did cos my account wasnt credited til friday) but that was tuesday, and i havent heard from him since the money left my account.

Just an impulse from the demo of Recabinet (google it, is just a collection of cab models), this one called '6L6 57 edge grill' on the '412 ghandi (think its a mesa cab) running it with Space Designer (is just handy to do so in logic) but any program that'll load them will work fine.

Epic Myspace Bulletin posted by Matt that I had to share on here...

Before you start reading this, because it is a little disjointed in places, please consider voting for us here (http://www.stamfordmercury.co.uk/customp ages/custompage.aspx?PageID=72519) for the Riverside competition. We'd very much like an excuse to wake up on that particular morning, and this would suffice as such an excuse. Alternatively, UK residents can text 'SMTEXT (space) INDUSTRY' to 81800. Please do.

Right, so, moving on:

A little about me: It's currently 6:03am and I've failed to get a single drop of sleep tonight. In 3 and a half hours I have to go spend a chunk of my day programming and designing what will hopefully become a useful piece of user electronics(with a significant degree of luck). But for now, I'm writing a bulletin, because sleep isn't happening, so this is.

So, we've been keeping in touch with you guys out there (well those of you that haven't lost interest in us yet anyway) and there are few questions that keep not popping up.

The first question I'll answer, posted by Anonymousfictionaluser#1 with approximately 0 diggs is;
"So what do Industry have planned for the future?"
Well, Anonymousfictionaluser#1, if that is indeed your real name (which for all legitimate legal, exemplary, numerical and fictional purposes, we'll assume it is), the answer to that is simply; quite a lot.

The less direct, and somewhat less, though still considerably vague answer is: We're going to be doing a few things to break away from the trend we've set ourselves. Not necessarily musically, but in the way we've approached what we do as a band.
One thing we will be doing very soon is releasing a free digital download package or as we call it, a FDDP (we don't call it that, but I'm quite tempted to now, rolls right off the tongue). The idea of this is to try and get our music out to more people, and also to get a product out to those of you who listen to us but are unable to get to gigs.

We have some other plans that are perhaps, at this stage, a little optimistic, but we (and by 'we' I mean me and Rob) are very enthusiastic about getting these plans off the ground.

Other possible things we have planned include changing the band name. Completely. Entirely. To an entirely and completely different name. This is to do with iTunes difficulties, and some of us feeling that we could do with going under a bit of a more interesting, better thought-out umbrella.

The next question I'll answer is from AnonymousFictionalUser#2, with approximately 0 diggs.

"So, when are you guys FINALLY planning on playing in or around Durham?"
11th July. TBC.

My final question for today comes from INDUSTRYFAN101, with approximately 1 digg.

"O HAI GUIZ I WAS WUNDERIN IFU CUD SAY HI 2 MY CAT FLUFFY CUZ I NO U LIEK CATS"
No.

But we do like cats.

Though if you do, you may want to steer clear of this:

I personally found it hilarious.

Band names are an interesting one. Loads of bands change their name because another band(s) have the same name. There will always be another band with the same name. Even if you can't find them on the net now, you will in a year or two.

Having said that, if one or more of the other bands with the same name has got a significant amount of popularity IE radio play, then it would be wise to change the name.

I really need some sort of decent software for posters, i only have word. Just in case you've seen the many posted around access and are thinking they're a tad basic.

And i've had a little look on the B2 website and found out that 100% of money taken on the door is for the bands. All staff costs are paid by drink sales so as long as people go along to buy drinkd they'll let you play.

thats such a weird way of doing it!

So they just let bands take over the venue and hope that people come in order to get paid?

What if no one comes? does the band have to pay the staff? lol

If its as simple as it sounds it seems quite a cool! Staff paid by drink sales, bands paid by door sales!

Will the door sales be directly split between the bands that play?

:)

A friend of mines band got moved onto the main stage in the actual pub as they only had 4 people turn up, btw the main stage is rubbish and for covers.

The headline band collect the money and then it's up to them to decide what they do with it, how much they give to the other bands.

That's why B2 is so popular for people to book and is usually my first choice when it comes to gigs, but their organization and communication are both awful, and they are a NIGHTMARE to deal with if the slightest thing goes wrong, like when I was booked for a gig there the other month and 2 of the bands didn't show up so they did their usual fold-their-arms-and-look-down-at-you thing and kept asking me (as a solo act I was with them on my own:() where they were, where they live, and expecting me to know everything and I just had to stand there and so "I don't know, I got told I'm playing and got told to come here" to everything they said:mad:

Just by the rest of the band! Mainly because most of our newer songs aren't quite finished - we've been concentrating on our live show this year and the recording side of things has slipped a little...
Essentially our writing and recording process takes place at the same time, so it's only been mixed for personal use and there's a lot of stuff that we'd like to come back to now we know how it works live.

I could send you a CD of what we've got down but there's a lot of scratch guitar/vocal/synth/bass :(

The drummer was from Ireland and he wanted to go home, that's all. It gets very frustrating when you put all of your energy time and money into a band and it's getting nowhere.

Out of 1000 points we scored 847.

But another band (who we had previously beat in the competition) scored exactly the same.

(what are the chances)

So we came joint first, which meant we had to split the 500 prize money, but we both get a promoter working for us free for a year as well as the pride of being the winners! haha

We were the first band on as well...and it was light outside! haha

And the other winners were the last band on

So naturally the crowd are a bit more 'into it' and warmed up so its still quite cool that we drew with them! haha

I enjoy listening to your music a lot, but to get any further you need to write a couple of seriously catchy songs and then do "single edits" IE cut out all of the bullshit and keep only the main bits of the song, and don't repeat anything too much, get it to under 3 minutes.

i posted this in banter too, but thought it was kinda applicable to here too.. so:

our comedy band, meercat funeral has a new song: 'make crotch will shake'.

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=649298&songID=7596315

can stream it off the site above.. just click hifi. it took between 3 and 4 hours to write and record, its not serious, though you might be able to tell that by some of the stellar lyrics..

unlock the the refrigerator before you go
the baps are dry and the cheese is growin' mould

refreeze the beans by the lake, and my milkshake
make no mistake of my fruit cake, which i'll bake
with a steak

but i was wonderin' if you could hold me moby, come around and try to show me -

where's all my cupcake, chardonnay soup grapefruit suck my tight loop
rent a short hoop, spread your chin juice 'round my farm, my zip's been set lose

save all your freshest socks for later & shake my mole
don't spill the muffin in the crater, or stroke my pole

just so you know

touch my umbrella with your rake, make my crotch ache
don't block the kettle's intake, for simon's sake

& simon - you rock my flakes

'cause i was wonderin' as i was gettin' lonely,
hoping that some day you would blow me

shake your wet moose to my sick tunes, grab my caboose,
make it profuse
sweat your love juice, try to seduce all my friends in milky refuse

enjoy ;D

I listened to the new Industry song - Echoes. It sounds really good, my favorite song of your yet, and my favorite mix actually! If you don't want the obligatory critique look away now!!

The snare has loads of attack, but there are a couple of places where he hits it harder and it really stands out, because it has so much attack. I'd put a limiter on it.

The vocal sound's a bit weak, maybe it just needs turning up but it's not there at the moment.

There is a "hook" in this song, a really catchy melody on the guitar. You have it at the start before it goes into the verse, and then it seems to come after every chorus. I would have it running through every chorus, particularly as there's no strong melody to the vocals. Basically play that guitar part over the chorus and then get rid of the bit after the chorus. It works on the last one obviously, it's just the two sections are the same chord progression and go on for quite a while. If you work on the assumption that this is one of, or the most catchy of your songs, then you should really try to cut it down a bit. It sounds like "tearing out your creative soul man!" but it just makes it easier for first time listeners to get into it.

Thats why Adam > Drum computers

And yeah i agree with that! lol

Matt and chris are the ones that deal with all that stuff tho...

The cymbals sound like samples, but the snare and kick sound very live, especially as there's so much dynamics in the snare (I thought it needed limiting) and the kick is quite a dull thud (as opposed to a perfect sample) - not that I thought the kick sound was bad, it's all personal preference, I just thought it could have been live drums with some cymbals and some snare samples programmed on top.
