tip - in pop/rock songs that you're making yourself, compress the living crap out of the vocals, and control their actual level throughout the song with volume automation. theyll be much more upfront.

two subtle layers of compression! don't go nuts with one ;)

makes it just as upfront, but not as obvious that it's been compressed as heavily and less reliant on automation if the singer is good with their dynamics to start with

run a heavily compressed and treble-heavy (liek almost distorted) vocal track just under the main one (same audio) - basically an exciter but controllable.

Then set up a reverb -> compression bus and it sounds super

or, now that you mention it.. parallel compression/new york compression techniques work very well on lead vocals...

for anyone who doesnt know about it, its basically having two tracks of the vocal take, one not compressed at normal volume and quiteter one that has been totally smashed by a compressor. you keep the dynamic feel, but also preserve quieter parts that would otherwise get lost.

edit: damn, beaten to it by jon, with a very similar technique :p

i have two channels that work at the same time time on my amp, so i've tried lots of things :p

but for what i do on guitar, it's a waste of time and overcomplicating the setup to achieve something i'm not after. plus we're using valve heads at high volumes, so get a fair amount of compression, don't need extra from pedals.

you can use it on the trial for as long as you wish for free.
when you begin to make money off it, or use it for anything serious.. then you need to buy a license.

Fernando

Yup! I use Reaper for recording right now, and it's very nice. It supports all the plug-in types I've heard of, as well as a good few I haven't, can host VSTi's and do all the editing and mastering stuff. Easily the best solution, especially if you don't plan on making money, therefore not needing to pay anything.

ya, even the non commercial license for reaper isnt as low as $20 iirc, i think theyre $50 for a non commercial license.. and you can use the program for more than 30 days without a license :p

mine currently says something like, "Reaper is not free - if you use it past 30 days, you must purchase it. You have been evaluating Reaper for approximately 92 days"

hahah. it also adds:

"The evaluation period for Reaper is 30 days, although it will remain fully functional indefinitely. Every day you use Reaper without having purchased it you will be reminded, and will have to contemplate purchasing for 6 seconds."

then i have to wait 6 seconds before clicking 'close' to continue :)

Here's a cover of one of the Instrumental sections from the Dream Theater song Octavarium:

http://soundclick.com/share?songid=6918180

Just click Hi-Fi to play.

This features the Moog Modular V virtual synth on for the lead, and my Mesa Studio Pre for guitars. The drums and bass are courtesy of the Garageband instruments in logic, they aren't great but are all I could be bothered to do.

Don't give me credit for the Lead line on the Synth, I have a midi of it and used that into the Moog.

Fiendish. You should get some without "promo copy" and sell them.

RE the cd, It was just that the first song had quite a weak snare, although there's enough top on it to cut through, there was no body to it - compared to the 2nd track for instance. Obviously it's been done on purpose, but there could be more power to the snare. Also, the guitars seem to be lacking in "fundamentals" but I suppose that's the sort of tone you're after? The bass was very boomy and I had to turn down the bass in my car, and EQ most of the bass out of my 5.1 system at home 'cos it was (literally) giving me a headache. The drummer could have gone half time for a couple of riffs, but that's just personal taste I suppose - objectively there was slight lack in rhythmic diversity. I thought for a promo CD you could have shortened the arrangements - it's allright for albums or whatever, but if the purpose of the disc is to promote you, you could really do with hitting hte first chorus in under 40 seconds.

Arse licking:

The synth sounds, samples, vocal sounds etc were really really good, and I love some of the complex rythms. Some of the lyrics as well - very fucking good. If it wasn't really good I wouldn't have listened to it until my head hurt! My girlfriend loves some of your riffs.

haha okay thanks.. sounds like i really need a decent pair of monitors.. sure your 5.1 system has a good response? because its not seemed overly bassy where ever else i have played it. thanks for the feedback too! the first song was one of the first ones we recorded.. so yeh the production isnt quite as good as some others

haha okay thanks.. sounds like i really need a decent pair of monitors.. sure your 5.1 system has a good response? because its not seemed overly bassy where ever else i have played it. thanks for the feedback too! the first song was one of the first ones we recorded.. so yeh the production isnt quite as good as some others

hey, industry is your band aint it? i heard some stuff from you once, i cant think where, a myspace or something, i just read cheddas review and now i'm fairly interested, you reckon you could mail me a cd or something, or let me know when your next gigs are so i can get down and see you play?
Considering the guitar work you did for my hysteria track a while ago i imagine it'll be a pretty damn decent band. and its all better live :D

also chedda, i think you posted something a while ago, you had made a video for a track you did, i really liked that track, you've got a very talented three piece going on there, you doing many gigs? i'd like to see you play live, your drummer is very imaginative with his rhythms as far as i could tell from that one song, i showed it to my mate when i heard it, hes really into it, where did you record it, the quality was top notch! :D

That explains the difference on the 1st track. I realise it must feel "over and done with" now but if you ever use the same audio for a different CD or whatever, just trigger a more powerful snare and it'd be fine. I'm sure you'd do that anyway.

RE the bass, my 5.1 system is overly bassy as it is. I have the sub turned all the way down, and use the soundcard EQ to get rid of the rest, but I had to use the WMP EQ ontop of all of that to get rid of even more bass last night. I don't know if the production overall is too bass-heavy, but the bass guitar deffinitely seemed too boomy. I've certainly never heard that kind of bass coming out of my car before, even compared to RATM. It's as though it's all lows, and no mids? Anyway, yeh, I don't normally turn down the bass in the car for anything but rap, but I really had to. It wasn't distorting or anything.

To be fair, I bet it sounds fucking massive in a club or the like.

You can download stuff from www.no-logo.ws There's a video on youtube somewhere for a song called "ghosts". The video was shot by a friend on a handheld DV cam, and edited at my house by me and the drummer. The CDs were all recorded, mixed and mastered by me and the drummer. The drummer's gone home to Ireland and we probably wont gig again until we're all 30 or something :(

hey yeh :) almost all of the material from the CD we are sending out is downloadable from our myspace right now for free, the main reason we are sending them out is incase people are able to help us to promote by handing some out too. if after having a listen you decided you can/want to, thats awesome and we can sort out some postage

upcoming gigs... where abouts are you?
3 Oct 2008 The Queen Victoria in leicester
15 Nov 2008 The Travellers Rest in lincoln
16 Nov 2008 The Shed in leicester (glastonbudget showcase, we're pretty much guaranteed a place in the festival as long as we bring some people, theyve already heard us play and they liked it a lot, but we only bought 2 ppl so they gave us another chance as one of the requirements was to be able to demonstrate you can bring a crowd haha)
26 Nov 2008 Subculture in leeds - rock society social
5 Dec 2008 The Library in leeds
16 Dec 2008 RAF Marham Music Club - not for public
21 Dec 2008 The Met Lounge in peterborough
29 Jan 2009 The Gasworks in bradford

we played a gig last night, kev (k&t mod) came which was nice to see him again, and someone else who is apparently on the board but i didnt recognise her name, probably not from teh k&t

I got the cd's yesterday! I've only listened to two & 1/2 songs so far because I was in a rush to get to work this morning. I must say I'm really enjoying it. You guys have some serious talent. I'll have a proper listen when I get home tonight to give some feedback but so far I've noticed the whole bass thing. I had to turn my sub off. And the drums are really light on the first track.

yes the drums are light in void heheh, it bugs me a bit too, but it was all done on an old pc and would take a very long time to do again.. we'll do that when we do an album proper :)

thanks for the feedback, glad you like it

for the record - NONE of the drums are me! :p theyve been made in a computer! haha

I think "Void" is programmed around something I played whilst jamming but all other drum tracks are made and written by Matt on a PC.

I play them differently live! :D

We got our first review! Of our myspace for some reason....

"Here the bassist from the ultra-metal band Jim Crow's Grave pulls an unexpected left-turn and forms Hastings' premier Hot Chip influenced electropop group. Splashes of actual guitar and bass aside, To The Moon Alice have built their songs on kicking, clonking drum-machines, New Wave synth-lines, and uncertain vocals. Over a generous six tracks the songwriting is strong, thought the geezerish, misjudged Dancing with Dwarves and mannered Placebo-isms of One In The Bush let the side down. Standards in this genre need to be high for club crossover potential, but a firm producer and decent studio could bring forth some disco stardust from To The Moon Alice.
7/10"

Not bad I guess, although we haven't had those songs up for months so it must be ancient

Historia (http://www.blaktornado.com/stuffz2374/historia.mp3)

Currently no vocals, but this is what I've got so far of my new demo pencilled as "Historia" (name will most likely change for final release)

Sorry if it's quiet; Garageband likes to mess up the sound when I export tracks by being all "Normalizing" about it all. Grrr. Why can't it just export it how I hear in the program? Anyway, that's another story.

Edit: Oh and I know there are a few harmonies that are a bit off. I'll fix that for the final version (Garageband was getting REALLY laggy and I couldn't be bothered re-importing the sibelius midi again because it takes quite a while to get it all sorted after that)

I listened to about half of it. The piano sound really bugged me. It seemed far too bright, especially compared to the heaviness of the rest of the parts. I feel like you could be doing something more interesting with the piano part's rhythm as well.

That was, unfortunately, a problem with garageband and my Midi file; it took both piano lines and made them one (D:<) so I couldn't control the "right hand" and "left hand" tracks individually. I'll sort it for the final thing though.

And I'm sure I can work something out. Thanks for your feedback :)

i like the songs :D think the lead vocal needs more balls on somnambulist its pretty loud, but lacking in mids i think.. kinda harsh, and of course you're going for that :p

infact i think the whole lot in general could do with more roundness on somnambulist. nice guitar solo though!

harbringer seems to have had the first second lopped off heh. the mix is better here, backing vocals and bass is more rounded.

id have a go at some mastering if you do post them mixed files

cheddatom
17-10-2008, 07:49 AM
roundness = roll off top end?

I'll post the the files tonight but it might have to be stashbox links because i'll be at home.

The vocals on somnambulist are obviously supposed to be harsh, but I still want them to have some power. I'll try boosting some mids - a quick remix before I upload.

Hopefully the harbinger mix will sound better un-mastered. I still have a lot to learn when it comes to mastering. My method is - create 6 duplicated tracks - have one dry, one with the default multi-band comp, one low, low mid, hi mid, high, all individually compressed while I listen, and then mix them all on the mixer. Then I take the exports and compare them to some good sounding CDs.

Trust me, it's not good.

My band did this last week and in the songs with the garageband loops, we fucked up miserably; they were too bassy to hear them...

The drum tracks generated by the Zoom drum machine on my recording studio were fine! Just the Garageband ones...

a little tip: if you're mixing in reason, you will almost certainly find that if you use rewire to send your tracks out from reason to a rewire host like cubase, they will actually sound a fair bit better. i dont know why, but something about the way the code is written for reason's summing mixer makes it sound worse than better coded summing mixers like cubase's.

the fact they sound worse as mp3 and worse on myspace is obviously going to happen, its getting pretty compressed when exporting to mp3, and then getting totally smashed when it hits myspace, but i guess you knew that.

Can you suggest anyone?
