You can use 2 mics and pan them left and right as long as you place them so the snare and kick will remain in the middle.

Does this set-up only use 2 mics?

Hold on Dave, did you record the drums with only one mic?

If you have only two overhead mics, look up the recorderman setup. Will get you a pretty good sound with a pretty easy setup. ;)

We had one mic overhead and one on the kick drum. Both were dynamic.

If you wanted to cheat couldn't you just use the two mics as overheads then do another take mic'ing say the kick and snare? What mics are they?

Set up one microphone about 6 feet away, slam it through some old school compression emulation and sound instant 60's Garage/Joe Meek.

Well it kind of is just using overheads, but if you were using 2 mics you could've done it. I know a video that describes recording and mixing the setup. I'll find it if I can.

I think it's the same method Crowella is on about too.

So that snare out on the far right basically meant the drums were panned hard right?

If you only have those mics, I would go with what Haze said in that case. It'll work in a jam session kind of way. Leave the stereo enhancement out of it.

Also, this is what two overheads can give you. What I would call reasonable. No compression or any effect here, just two "average" quality overhead mics.

(the faint taps that sound metallic once or twice in this soundcloud are the drummer being lolz funny and hitting the mic stands with his sticks)

We were going to do that but we were concerned about timing issues.

Our drummer wants his bass drum to be heard properly so we insisted on a mic at the bass drum. His the drummer so we just went with what he wanted. I think the drums came out quite good.

Yes, like everything else for some unholy reason.

We're thinking of investing in a mixing board and borrowing a few mics for the next recording session so a live take could be possible.

Bass drum sounds good enough. To be honest I think it's worth sacrificing some of the bass drum hit for an overall better drum sound.

Crowella

Kueller has it. Best setup for any beginner drummer to use. Dynamic mics like the SM57 aren't going to be the best in your case unless you want to whack them on snare/tom duty.

Use some condenser mics for overheads. Maybe use other mics on snare/kick/cymbals later on. The more you add, the more annoying the recording/mixing process will be. Try a simpler method first, get comfortable with it then continue from there.

You need to work out what the relationship between the kick drum and bass is, otherwise that'll get very messy, very quickly. The importance of this is more emphasised in dance music, but still important in all genres.

If you want a big kick, then you need to keep the bass thin or if you want a deep, subby bass, then got to keep the kick thin.

Dave

Like I said, its more obvious in dance music. So something like Electro will favour the kick whereas D&B will favour bass, which was quite obvious in the early days of the genre.

In guitar based music, reggae will favour the bass guitar over the kick and something like punk where the bass will generally be root notes filling out the guitar, a fat kick will do more for the track. 70's punk bands with big reggae influences actually tended to do the former as a result, listen to The Slits' cover of Heard It Through The Grapevine.

Raurie

I've never heard it like that actually. I'll have to keep it in mind for the future.

Pretty much goes for any instruments that have overlapping frequency ranges. You only have so much 'space' in a mix and if you've got a lot of different elements competing for the same frequencies they'll end up losing definition and getting lost. The same principle can be applied to getting separation between different guitar tracks if you boost a frequency range for one and cut the same frequencies for the other. I normally knock a lot of the low end out of anything that's not a bass instrument/kick drum with an EQ or high pass just to make sure there's not any unnecessary clutter messing up my low end.

Kueller917
03-04-2013, 01:10 AM
Well yeah I know that you have to get everything to fit nicely in different frequency areas but the more specifics of the either-r relationship with the kick drum/bass characteristics is something I never thought of in detail. It makes sense now that I do think of it though.

Dominic.

Raurie, I'm not talking about masking and all that, just the relationship between those two will have a drastic impact on the track as a whole, can even help define a band's sound, as well as genre as I've already talked about.

Ah right I'm with you, fair enough :).

In other news all this talk has led to me digging out the first mixes I ever did from college about 6 years or so ago. One of them is particularly horrific despite my thinking otherwise at the time:

If I remember rightly we recorded all the guitars (and probably bass) through a Line 6 Pod and are EQ'd to more or less boost everything evenly between 30 and 10k so they sound just as fantastic as you might imagine...
More embarrassingly it looks as though, for reasons unknown to man and science, I thought it was a good idea to clumsily gate the overheads and hi-hats. Guess how that worked out.

Doesn't help that the song is well over 6 minutes long, includes a piano interlude and a minute long instrumental outro where I clearly thought I was Slash (spoiler alert: I'm not).

Whoa chedda, great live performance. I've listened to that song on the album quite a lot so I'm really glad to hear how well it translates live.

My band got a bit wierd and decided to "experiment" a bit. Not going to be the final product but was worth just mucking around with anyway for that idea.

Might be one of the first songs I tackle recording properly once the guitarist buys his own amp and I can actually monitor how it's going to sound. Pretty much MIDI drums via an electronic kit and everyone going through my (poorly recorded) bass amp. Synths are just simple things I played around with on samplitude, mostly for lulz and because I felt like being different.

EDIT: Also no vocals. We can't seem to think of anything reasonable to go with this since our singer is more of a traditional RnB singer by standard.

I never noticed the Hyper Music thing until now. Clearly Matt Bellamy is just pouring out of my every creative orifice.

And to be honest I think a decent recording would probably do more good than more mixing. We always seem rushed when we record :( But if you like, Dom, I can try and get you the raw recordings from Dan to have a go at mixing them yourself? I think he uses Pro Tools, but I honestly have no clue what he does behind that monitor of his. Recording and mixing scares the shit out of me :$

Sounds cool. I've used a fair few String plugins with varying results; never got anything sounding as warm and natural as recording the real thing but definitely not bad. Check out NI 'Session Strings'. Really good for more contemporary and pop stuff rather than classical and it has some really cool soul/Motown style sounds that could work really well with this sort of thing.

Check out NI 'Session Strings'. Really good for more contemporary and pop stuff rather than classical and it has some really cool soul/Motown style sounds that could work really well with this sort of thing.

Cheers. I'll give it a look. I think if i can get something kinda orchestral and then put a sort of subtle vibrato effect on it to make it sound like an old slightly-warped record, I'd be happy with that.

Possibly a little piano thrown in for good measure?

A little thing my band did in a day. We just wanted to get something out there for people to listen to. It's a bit different from what we usually do, but we like it.

Samples are from an old Canadian forest fire Public Information Film and an American Emergency Broadcast System warning if anyone was remotely interested.

Are you the guy who had the demo before with all the really odd panning? If so then this is a big improvement. Either way here's my thoughts (not all negative and hopefully constructive):

Sounds like the performance is really quite loose which doesn't really do the recording any favours. When you've got issues like people audibly knocking mics (2.50) and that sort of thing it seems rather like a bit more time and care could have been taken. Still. The drums in particular are dodgy more or less all the way through with all sorts of timing issues and whatnot particularly on the fills.

The vocals aren't really that bad to be honest but the mix and production do nothing to flatter them and help them mesh with the track. The aforementioned knock and some pretty erratic levels on the vocals suggest that it might be worth your vocalist spending a bit of time working on mic technique as that'll help with these issues.

Guitars and bass are pretty solid, plenty of potential there and not a lot to criticise although mix-wise I do feel like the guitars are overwhelming everything else at points (especially the vocals).

Really the important things to take from this are to make sure you practice, practice, practice until you're ready to record and can all play every bit of the song comfortably and consistently. Make sure to go through and check for any stray noises or mistakes that shouldn't be there and remove them: If this means recording a whole new take then do it because it'll be well worth it to get an infinitely better final product. If you're mixing this stuff yourselves then just keep at it and make sure to try and improve each time. If someone else from outside the band is mixing it for you then consider looking elsewhere.

Thanks. Its nice to get constructive criticism (fabri). And yeah, that was us
This was recorded about 3 weeks ago when the song was about 2 days old. We were given the chance to record 2 songs (At the time we only had 1 completed) so we solidified this over a practice session and recorded this the next day.

He is a very good vocalist but in this performance he didn't quite get it right. The production on this was done fairly quickly to give us something as the group we recorded it with felt we deserved a re-recording session since they messed up a lot of the footage (the performance was live and filmed btw). I'm having a go at some editing myself but without the isolated tracks its quite hard.

I kinda felt sorry for our drummer. He is a great drummer but me and the guitarist kept changing our ideas for this song and kept forgetting to tell him the cues so the performance doesn't really do him justice. But we want to give the verses a more powerful sound so we want to change the drum lines a bit anyway.

We all felt the mixing for the guitar and bass was a bit off. In a for a 3 piece (musically) like us we think the bass should be a bit louder to fill out the sound. But as I said before, this mixing was done quickly.

We have a practice session tomorrow where we'll be rehearsing for the first time as a full band in over two months so we really need to practice. Once we do the re-recordings and if they're good we'll release them properly in some form. I just wanted to show it to ye to get some feedback and I got it.

It definitely shows that the song's under-rehearsed but a positive way to look at it is that when you come to re-record you've got a solid benchmark to listen to and work out what you want to improve or do differently and a point of comparison for afterwards. I definitely know how tempting it can be to record new material soon after it's written. This track (http://projectwicket.bandcamp.com/track/get-in-ms-riley-2) was recorded under similar circumstances to your one; people wanted to film us for their project we'd only just written it, the structure was worked out 10 minutes before the first take but we wanted to play it because it was new and we only had one other track. So this is completely understandable.

We all felt the mixing for the guitar and bass was a bit off. In a for a 3 piece (musically) like us we think the bass should be a bit louder to fill out the sound. But as I said before, this mixing was done quickly.

If you're identifying things that you're not happy with and areas that you need to pay attention to then that's definitely a step in the right direction. It all comes with practice really - I listened back to some mixes of songs I did 5 years ago and they're fucking cringeworthy but I find I'm improving with every mix I do (even if I'm still lightyears away from as good as I want to be!).

Something else that's just just occurred to me on a second listen is that I can don't think I can hear any kick drum anywhere in the whole 4 minutes. I thought something sounded strange and that's what it is. Should say as well that the snare and cymbals sound pretty nice even if the performance is a bit ropey :)

Quickest recording a bit too late at night but had to show off the Pedulla in a recording situation. Truly loving it.

https://soundcloud.com/adamcrowell1990/pedulla-groove

No messing around with anything in the DAW. Just Mic and DI. I do need to slightly lower the bass on the amp though. The Pedulla produces quite a bit more than most basses and it seems like the Ampeg is pretty heavy on the bass EQ even sligtly below noon.

Matthijs
06-08-2013, 11:41 AM
The bass seems very distant to me, but I like the sound of it! Could use more mids imho.

Crowella
06-08-2013, 11:45 AM
Yeah, I realise that I turned the volume too low. I wasn't using my monitors but some cheaper headphones which tend to hype the lows. Easy fix.

The reason I say lower bass is to bring the mids up (by raising overall volume then). I already have the mids close to 4 o clock on the amp. Can't go too much higher.

EDIT: The distance may be because both bass tracks are HARD panned to either side. This isn't normal and something I totally forgot to correct in Audacity. At least you can hear what the DI (left) and Mic (right) does.
EDIT 2: Got back home to see the recording desk... I realise that someone that wasn't me has turned the Low and High EQ up on the channel I was using for the DI. Derp. Makes sense now. I'll re-record in the morning.

Haha, I don't know that Biffy song, so that was maybe just coincidence. However Montreal was totally Arctic, altough the riff is not exactly the same, different key and the second part is lil bit different.

mmm... if you're thinking 'nishe' wise, I think it could work as an interlude. Just needs good phrasing with drums/bass if you mean to do it in a full band setting.

Yeah. The drums were just intended as a temporary thing, thought acoustic taps would sound better than a Kaossilator preset :chuckle: I thought the little reverb slapbacks from it were kinda cool though.

I can imagine it done as a full band in my head so I guess that's a positive, if I want to play it in a live setting...

I found a really interesting guitar tone (with freakin lots of reverb) and the result is this noise rock song. I could say it might have been inspired by A Place To Bury Strangers. What do you guys think? I might be heading this noisey direction now.

This is really cool. Pretty well mixed, tight too. Only thing that can sometimes be a bit off key to my ears is the vocals, but not much at all, I like the dude's voice! Good stuff.

Don't think I've heard either of them before but then I only tend to dip into this thread every so often seeing as the quantity and quality of material varies so much!

Great stuff though, all three are very cool and thought the first two were particularly fantastic. Lots of potential there and to be honest the recording quality didn't really get in the way of enjoying the songs at all. Everything comes across really well in spite of any production issues but would also love to hear them all polished up and whatnot though.

Not really that easy to comment on it as a score without the visual. Don't really care so much for the melody: feels a bit aimless and improvised at the moment but obviously that perception might change in context. Like the chordal stuff between 0'20" and 0'36" though so would have been interested to hear it based around that idea a bit more but context blah blah. Any chance of hearing it with picture?

it's pretty cool! in my opinion, the entire section up until 0.14 is a tinyyyyyy bit too fast. the almost-kiss-part is fantastically done tho!
and a thing about the last part id do differently is maybe repeat the main motif thing once less. it would work just as well if the piano stopped at 0.44 and the strings just faded (slowly). but thats just my opinion :)

but its good work man keep it coming.

A sort of Kyuss-y idea I came up with. We want to cover some Kyuss but since they're in C standard and wouldn't really go down well in the venues we're trying to play we came up with some stoner rock style ideas. Also, this is using my new bass overdrive.

I'm not trying to make excuses but there is a reason behind those.
Our singer had/has a kidney infection and was "Feeling like dick" at the time. We do plan on going down the originals route, the singer only joined less than 2 weeks ago so she didn't have time to learn our originals. She actually does play guitar but our lead guitarist is going to give her some lessons so she can play more rock songs and lastly, I do backing vocals but the soundman was being a twat and never turned on my microphone. He instead turned on our guitarist's microphone which caused the feedback you hear during Little Black Submarines.

I would put in a mega riff. As it stands to gets to the edge, looks out over the edge, puts down a blanket and has a picnic at the edge, but never goes over the edge. I think some sort of climax would do the job. Plus, and this is just a personal thing, how about making the lead guitar sound a little more fucked up, a little static fuzz?

It's really strange saying this but there is a band I know that used that exact same chorus riff in the chorus for one of their songs. Thankfully they don't play it anymore nor are they popular enough to be worthy of a mention  (I got their drummer now, they lose out)

That said, I love it. It's got a kind of Radiohead/QOTSA mix that works. I am happy.

Anyway, here's a short sample of something I'm going to work with my new band this week, also a sample of how the Kawai sounds direct in. Stupidly enough, I already forgot the right hand for one section (now that I think about it, it's 6ths) and I've gotten sloppy overnight, sadly uni takes precedent over practice but I'll sneak it in.

Sounds like one of the themes from Pokemon or Gran Turismo. Didn't intend that. Whatever.

:chuckle: So too much edge. Ok! And I could indeed try that fuzz, I shall

There's a riff I could put at the end but I'm a little worried it'd suddenly become a huge Oceansize ripoff, I'm aware it sounds a lot like them and other bands already..

I am happy.

Oh no! Is there a youtube link of said song?

Thanks man  I certainly think it could end up pretty good but I feel like it needs something at the end, whether that be a riff or whatever

Fucked up is the best up :yesey:

Do whatever works best for the song. We're the sum of our inspirations and anyway, once you put vocals on it it'll be unique.
