Band practice tomorrow, I shall give it a go and see which the guys prefer :)

I take this as a huge compliment. Along with Bellorz, Dan Auerbach is my favourite vocalist, so cheers :D

Massive props to you Harley, you were actually nearly spot on

I now know the bit you were on about, and yeah thats the bit I'm indecisive about. I tend not to play it loud because the full chords as I usually play them tend to fill out the sound a bit more in a live situation, but I put them in for the recording just to mix things up a little and add a little variety. I can see what you mean though. Gonna need a think about which I use in the future. I was actually planning on playing those parts with the fuzz pedal, which does sound somewhat more preferable, but alas time constraints put an end to that.

But still, massive props for tabbing it so closely :D

I bet you feel like a right badass now, you've actually had someone make a tab of your song  Might complete it and submit it to Ultimate Guitar or some shit.

I think it'd sound good live every so often, I just personally think the actual recording should just be the simple version - however obviously it's going to be better in a live situation to add little kinks and things sometimes

By the way, your blog is hilarious

Eurgh, sound guys, the downfall of all my recent gigs :(

Hole In My Pocket demo is now pretty much done, so here is the final mix :awesome: I think it's done anyway. I must admit, I'm surprised by how well it turned out. I will hand it to Dan who did the mixing, his audio skills are as good as his beard (which is of adequate quality).

http://soundcloud.com/the-tenants/the-tenants-hole-in-my-pocket

You're probably all sick of hearing this song by now, but any more feedback now that the mixing is done would be massively appreciated.

Just got back from playing a gig tonight, we weren't overly satisfied with it but we must have done something right because the promoter has offered us some gigs in Wales :awesome:

I don't know where Wales is but I know it's further away than Middlesbrough so hooray.

Yep, theres quite a few we're working on at the moment actually. I have one that pretty much just rips off Your Touch by The Black Keys, and a few others that also rip off The Black Keys :awesome:

We played a new one for the first time last night and it went down rather well, needs polishing though. Its called Moving Man (pronounced Movin' Man) because obvs I'm just so bluesy :phu:

Yeah, we had to use sampled drums in ableton and they kinda got drowned amongst everything else haha. I'm looking into learning mixing and some production so our demos are better in future :).

It's quite good, however I agree with the comments about the drums being too soft, plus I think that the intro drags on for a bit too long, I'd either throw another chord in there, or halve the time each chord is played for.

If you go that way I'd advise to use eq and compression just to try things out. Use the eq to find sweet spots as to where the drums have room in the mix, and compression to make them a bit more punchy, not too much though.

Noooooooooooooo no no no no, thats certainly not the final recording! That was just a demo we did for the record company a few weeks ago.

Thats the new arrangment, but we haven't actually started officially recording yet, that'll come later in the year. When that time comes we'll have much much much higher quality recordings done in the studio. We actually did that recording stuck in a freezing cold practice room with about three microphones

Calling it the official music video was more of a marketing ploy to get people interested, from what I understand

And to be honest, I don't really like this version. I love the new arrangement and I think musically it sounds good, but that has to be one of the weakest vocal performances I have ever given :(

Ok, so heres a serious, deep, meaningful, personal post from me for once.

I wrote this song last night and recorded this demo this morning. Its not the type of song I usually right because theres no big riff or solo, just me and an acoustic and some words. Also probably the most personal song I've written too, so go easy.

If it gets approval from the rest of The Tenants then we'll record it this Friday to be released on our forthcoming EP which will be released on 26th April, so I hope to god they like it. Anyway here it is:

Ok, so heres a serious, deep, meaningful, personal post from me for once.

I wrote this song last night and recorded this demo this morning. Its not the type of song I usually right because theres no big riff or solo, just me and an acoustic and some words. Also probably the most personal song I've written too, so go easy.

If it gets approval from the rest of The Tenants then we'll record it this Friday to be released on our forthcoming EP which will be released on 26th April, so I hope to god they like it. Anyway here it is:

http://soundcloud.com/alex-porritt/alex-porritt-stay-with-you

I like to think that my songwriting has improved slightly since Hole In My Pocket, but I'll leave that to you guys to decide.

Also happy easter, lets all get fat on chocolate in memory of the late bunny.

Reminds me of Bob Dylan. Really nice, I can't see how your band won't like it!

A segment from our "practice" today. First time we played this song in a month so forgive it for being a little sloppy. We recorded it live on the Rode NT1A. So you think this sounds good enough to whack on as "demoable" for venues to hear? It's just for the sake of showing what we do.

Pfft, you're always unhappy with your songs Matt. I likes. I get glimpses of QOTSA, super happy! :D

So I have another demo song which we did today and it's vastly different. Still needs to be mixed and prettied up level wise but was just a basic idea to try some things. First time working in Reason and I was a bit off time with the keys due to the latency between Reason and Samplitude. It was like having someone play vastly off beat, several times a bar. Fucking frustrating.

I'm on bowed bass which we recorded using a MIDI keyboard (cause I don't own an upright bass, yet). I also did the strings at the end which will be played on a keyboard by the vocalist live. This has the same guitarist as before and the drummer from the previous song is the vocalist on the recording.

I suppose so, but I really can't stress enough how bad this EP is. I don't think I would have bought it if it weren't me.

And we discovered at the last moment how cheaply its been done. Its literally just your average blank Maxell disc, with your average Tesco hard case and a cover printed on your average printer paper (in colour, mind you).

Then you put the CD in your CD player and you discover how fucking awful the music is. The songs are decent, but they've been recorded truly awfully. The quality isn't even as good as that demo of Hole In My Pocket that was posted here. And the mixing is even worse. You can barely hear the band over the vocals. And the vocals are even worse. I don't think I've ever given a worse vocal performance in my life, but it was recorded in such a rush that we didn't even have time to do any more takes.

People are telling me its good, but I know shite when I hear shite. This isn't just the usual 'I'll say its bad so you tell me its good' situation, this is genuinely an awful EP. I cringe when I listen to it, not because I don't like my own voice, but because the whole thing is fucking awful.

Having said that, if you want to give me your money I will gladly take it.

Most definitely the wrong chords, could you not hear it? Strangely I don't recall you using such ballsed up chords in the KnT factor? Solo sounds odd though, not wrong chords, but the whammy action. Tone's not bad though, would be great to hear your setup through a better amp!

The song was only about 15 minutes old when I recorded it. The freeness of my songs comes from them being 'of the moment' in a way. Once I get 4 more I'll pick the best 4/5 and make an EP.

Cheers mate. The riff at the start was built upwards from the drumbeat and the there's a riff in there that I've had kicking about for a few years, apart from that we jammed and tinkered with it as a group. The only thing we've got of studio-ish quality at the moment is this track that I mixed from a live session we did for a project for some friends of ours:

Don't think I've shared it yet. A while ago we did a song called Phoenix, our first proper attempt at recording from home. Hopefully a few band songs will prop up soon including an RnB styled song. Its a different experience for me to play this stuff but I enjoy it.

Youtube seems to have added a delay to the audio somehow, odd.

Signal chain for both = guitar -> fuzz factory with a mostly dead battery -> shitty line 6 combo set to crunch.

Do you make a point of having alcohol fuelled practices? Because thats where all the good music comes from :yesey:

Also was it the fuzz factory feeding back when you turned the volume nob up in those breaks or did you just have the gain ridiculously high? Those were nice squeals.

I don't think we've ever had a sober practice or gig

It was a combination of both - my bridge pickup has gone quite microphonic, so that plus the fuzz factory (into a crunchy amp) having a fairly dead battery and refusing not to squeal on any setting meant a fucking awful/brilliant noise.

IntelligentAl

A sober gig is a wasted gig :awesome:

Yeah I thought it sounded microphonic, I've been getting a similar sound from the neck pickup on my Strat. It would bother me but the squealing is great for making our drummer shut the fuck up.

Finally got an acoustic gig in about two weeks and without auditioning for it like they wanted us to (which is odd, maybe they know we're good?) First one with the new band, should hopefully go really well. An afternoon gig at a café on the corner next to my work. Planning to bring a decent sized crowd.

So desperate to get my upright for it. Would be nice to play some bowed goodness and fit in with the HIPSTER crowd.

*Never been able to drink before/during a gig. Every gig I have done I have had to drive at least an hour to play or it was a super uptight festival where sniffer dogs went through each of your guitar and bass cases, leaving mud on your gear and everything in your car. True story.

Tuning sounded ok to me Longan. For someone who complains about saturated tone on other videos/covers then Jamie is really not one to talk, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt due to his lack of proper recording equipment (but not really)

What bugs me is the incorrect tab for the riff

Lord MFC

I worked it out by ear so the riff may be a little off... Where am I going wrong?

And honestly, in the room that tone sounds so much better. A £10 singstar mic isn't very good...

And can you not hear it? Basically the little doodly bit in the main riff on the D string is 16-17-16 not what you're doing

I did work it out by ear. And I prefer the FF than the distortion channel on the 401
why not check guitar tabs to match up what you're playing? Might explain why your new born riff was off.
Because I prefer to use my ear. It creates the better musician if you can work stuff out by ear, and it's more of a challenge... I used a tab for hod's MK solo though, even though I fucked it up  I thought my New Born riff was fine apart from the Bb diminished chord?

Basically this, and Dom I do play it 15-16-15. Whoops.

I guess I should really use tabs, but I find it also sticks in more if I work it out. Anyway I thought it was fairly solid. My New Born one was better though

And the FF does have a really nice sound irl. I should try placing the Mic further away or use two.

From what I've heard your amp is apparently decent? Surely with that and your Mansion you must find some suitable tone? I don't think the dirty FF tone works for the verse at all
I thought my New Born riff was fine apart from the Bb diminished chord?
Nope, I think we pointed it out as well. Instead of working your way up the frets you did something like 2-2-2-2-5-2-5-2-7-7-7-...etc.
