Yeah, I might see if my son is up for getting some of those for his band.
They have a pretty good sound live as the lead guitarist is trained in mixing as well, but I know they love gadgets.

There's no point my boyfriend suggesting it for the band he's in, they just ignore him. It would save a shit load of arguments though.

It's usually a good idea to bring one person along who knows the band and how you want to sound, unless you actually know the sound guy you are working with.

I've seen massive arguments because of this. If you are the type who doesn't care about a soundman hating you at your gig, go ahead. Otherwise, it may be best to leave it. Some soundguys will listen to your mate, but some will just get angry and make your set sound shit.

Heyo, got another random GarageBand thingy, but yeah. It's actually only the ending chunk that got vocals slapped on it, the rest is only instrumental and therefore not exciting to post right now. Needs a LOT of editing with volume levels and cutoffs of different tracks, but I'm kinda excited about it-

we changed it to The Fall of Industry, as some other band popped up who are signed and decided they also liked the name Industry, who weren't about when we started

we may have a gig in manchester sometime, we're trying to limit the number of shows we play right now, and mainly just do fewer, better gigs.. so if theres a decent venue and we can get enough people down / its worth playing, then we may :)

It's not based upon who's signeat name for how long and what size of market(s) the two parties are aiming at.

If you're bothered about it, it'd be worth getting some advice off the PRS assuming you're a member.

Hey all,

My band Sigils (Formerly Myr, Goat, Architect, and The Hills Have Eyes) have recorded our second EP/album (30 minutes, seven tracks, so I guess it's a mini-album).

I wanted your feedback before we record vocals and do the final mix, because I started my musical journey here on this forum like six years ago or something.

Anyway, I hope you all will listen. I think it sounds very professional, but I still want some feedback before we do the final mix. I know it's kinda hard to make judgements based on the instrumental tracks, as vocals are a big part of the sound, but try to be objective and technical here. If you like the music, or dislike it, feel free to post your thoughts as well.

For the Muse fans I guess there are some Muse inspired moments on this record, mainly the later parts of track 4.

So, please, please, listen and give it to me straight.

I'm not talking to anybody in specific so don't get offended.
But I am wondering, for those of you in bands, don't you ever get tired of writing and playing cliche songs? Like so many of these new unsigned bands have just the most cliche chord changes, terrible lyrics (which isn't too much of an issue) and a basic melody thats been done sooo many times.
I hardly ever go on a bands myspace and think, wow I actually like these. Its annoying really, I wish people would try and stray from the norm a bit with song writing. I guess it can also have a bit to do with lack of training in theory and that really. I study music, and we have to compose songs for our assignments, and when I hear other peoples, they are just always so fucking obvious.
I just hope anybody in an unsigned band knows, they gotta produce something a bit special to get noticed these days.

The track "Vivre l'instant présent : Impro 1" is maybe the most Muse influenced track on the album, give it a listen !

We should be on first at 7:15 at the Dublin castle which is meant to be a fairly well known pub in camden. Only our second gig outside of Norwich so we're hoping random people will go and like us. It's £4.50 to get in if you get a flyer from us, we should be down there from around 3 promoting.

Review of the EP - http://soundcloud.com/3rd-storey-chemist/sets/grapple-x

I spoke to David Hazel of the 3rd Storey Chemist, and he said to me "You'd better not give this a good review. I want one of your trademark bastard reviews."
First of all, I've never given a 'bastard' review. Honesty is not malice. Secondly, I don't know if it was some form of strange reverse psychology from the love child of John Lennon and John Major, but if it was, it worked. It's difficult to find too many bad words about this EP, it's just too listenable. Sticking to the turn of the century, ambient Warp records sound pioneered by Aphex Twin, Plaid and Autechre, but with pleasant nuances thrown in like bit-crushed leads and a couple of tracks that could be (Dare I say it?...) Dubstep. It rewards attention with near flawless production.
But still the main thing I have to coming back to is the word 'listenable'. It really is perfect background music; in fact I'd listened to the whole thing 5 times without realising.
So I'm sorry David but you may have to wait for your next output to receive a 'bastard' review because I enjoyed this a little bit too much.

Did a quick recording/mix of my cock rock bands first song that we wrote together. It's just a funny side project trying to cash in on the obnoxious synth rock fad.

http://simenruud.com/div/sinsmaster2.mp3

You're probably going to feel very indifferent to it, but at least it has handclaps and distorted bass.

EDIT: Here's another track from the same session: http://simenruud.com/div/only13.mp3

EDIT 2: And a no-synth version of that track: http://simenruud.com/div/only13nosynth.mp3

EDIT 3: I forgot we also recorded a third RATM style song as well. Pretty shitty, though: http://simenruud.com/div/bugparty2.mp3

It's available on CD (http://www.blaktornado.com/store/), through iTunes (http://itunes.apple.com/gb/album/unlucky-for-some/id337784744) and on Amazon MP3 (Link coming soon).

The album consists of twelve tracks, as well as a bonus track (which varies depending on the purchase source). You can hear 30-second previews on iTunes (http://itunes.apple.com/gb/album/unlucky-for-some/id337784744) and on my site (http://www.blaktornado.com/music/album4/). This album takes a lot of inspiration from the likes of Muse, Placebo, Madina Lake, Franz Ferdinand, and Ash, so if you're a fan of any of those, feel free check out my tracks on iTunes or my site!

Not easy at all really :/ kind of a rare occurrence to even be considering getting booked nowadays, unless you mix it with rock music and/or have vocals or something.

The main thing is to have a couple of decent recordings online - myspace is still best for this because it's quick and easy to listen and find out a bit about the band... Then go to gigs/partys/bars/clubs/etc and network.

You can try messaging promoters online but you're much more likely to get decent gigs from face-to-face stuff :)

steve kicked the shit out of the gear, aid just slumped on this chair at the side of the stage and didn't move for half an hour. I went outside and got stoned while try to contain my rage. It's funny, looking back, but at the time he'd really pissed me off 'cos he'd promised not forget lines or get pissed. Then after he wouldn't pay me for the mic. It split us up and I haven't seen him in 9 months or so.

Here is our cover of Knights of Cydonia.
We are a 3-piece tribute band to Muse.

We have a backing track that we made ourselves, but you cant really hear it unless you know its there, out practice place has good equipment but a not so good P.A hehe. Its pretty much throughout the whole song.

Just thought some people might be interested to give it a watch.

probably i shouldn't critique anything yet because i am still rocking the 2 bar loops and try to get through the 400 page user guide of reaper but i would did something to the drums on the the parts without wobwob (verses?) i hated the sound of the kick, it had no low end on my headphone but it had a strong high frequency attack. i have a feeling that since my HD555's low end is not to great, my mixes would be bass heavy on other systems but i don't know.

anyways, how to do those seemingly random (it sounds synced, but at different tempos) LFO speeds on the cutoff freq. knob?

It's an 808 kick, but I often put a high pass filter on because I like to use sine waves to fill out the bass, but it's at 80Hz at most, so yeah, could be your headphones as the 808 kick doesn't lack in bass at all! I've not heard it through a big system yet though.

The distorted synths have all sorts going on, only parts of it is the LFO rate changing :)

Ok, so here's my first stuff which is longer than 2 marsbars. Not much more musical content though, I did it only for mastering critique, so i didn't spend too much time on the musical side of the things. So it is short which is good.
I find that crash in the middle really shitty but somehow i left it in.
My first question is that, what gives the overall shitty aura of the track? Too compressed? Shit instrument tones? Track is too empty? (i could insert some background noises and/or pads but i still have to learn a lot of about them so i think i couldn't come up with any bearable stuff and i don't want to use presets from Kore)

Anyways is there any producing/mastering/mixing thread?

I'd like to put together a rock band again, just doesn't seem to work out :erm:

Absolutely nothing but respect for the playing and the challenge. I got all but one of them, I wouldn't know any Lady Gaga tunes if they bit me on the ass, but I got the rest of them. The intro threw me a bit, I thought that it was new tune that I had never heard of.
