Fucking ace man that ending xD
The best part is that it looks like you really don't plan to do fuck around it just happens spontaneously, and that's really awesome!

And your singer is really like FUCK YEAH CHEK MEH AND MAH BAND MO'FOKKERS
In a good way haha.
Once you get the chance, go to Netherlands or Belgium for a tour, I'd really like to go to your gigs!

It was half intentional, just the way I sing and play at the same time, also I didn't want to stay to the song too much... yeah it's a cover but it doesn't have to note for note :)

dont talk to me about "its a cover - it doesnt have to stick to the original"...been there....done that...got the t-shirt....and the criticisms....

Ofcourse but that doesn't mean it sounds better, also go a bit easy with the vibrato on your voice ;)

zactly...sounds a bit weird....

especially as its a popular song which people sing along to...

Theres two types of covers in my eyes

The ones where you try your best to imitate the original, eg us (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=obIUY9RxiWg&feature=channel_page) (omg singer Iz Not Sound n0t bellamy o9lolol)

and then theres the ones where you add bits and deliberately break the mould...eg, this guy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Co4ipe90Mv4)

Having it inbetween doesnt sound right... :\

But yeah, its good other than that imo

Quick question, how would anyone here recommend micing up an amp?

Just a dynamic mic or a Dynamic and a condenser? and how far away for both? What levels and when it comes to mixing the guitar parts how should I go about this?

cheddatom
15-06-2009, 08:44 AM
Just try it. I like to put a dynamic mic right next to the speaker. I also like a condensor a little further away. Some people put condensors right next to cabs but I would be a little worried about damage - depending on how loud you're turned up.

When you're mixing, if it sounds like the guitars are too loud, you have to turn them down. If it sounds like they're too quiet, then you have to turn them up.

Tomorrow - how to tune your guitar with a digital tuner.

stick to one mic for a good while, two is many times more complicated.
starting off, put on some headphones and monitor the mic signal (high isolation headphones are best). make sure the signal is a good 3-6 dB from clipping and move the mic around the area of the speaker cone. have it right up to the grille on your amp, maybe a few inches back. hold the mic in your hand and while a friend plays something repetitive, swing the mic slowly around infront of the cone. you should be able to hear the difference position makes in your headphones.
youll notice the sound is much brighter the closer you get to the center of the speaker, and more dull further away. a good starting point can be halfway across the speaker cone. it also depends what angle youre pointing it... just play around with some headphones on, if you like what you hear, set up the mic stand in the same position, check it again with your ears and hit record ;D

Yeah cheers guys :D

And I also meant like playing around with the raw recording, like what EQs to push certain parts through the mix more etc?

if you mic it up well you shouldnt need much eq at all.. i would high pass it to remove low frequency non information though, to clear up room for bass and kick.. but then again i high pass pretty much everything that isnt kick or bass ;D

id say a high pass around 100-200Hz (depends on your mix and your tone though) and maybe a bit of peaking eq at a few khz, 1 2 or 3 mebbe, depends. i sometimes will low pass the guitars too, but only very mildly and it depends on how much is going on up high in the mix

cheddatom
16-06-2009, 10:59 AM
IMHO your high pass on guitar shouldn't be higher than 100Hz unless you're trying to alter the tone.

Full thing: http://soundclick.com/share?songid=7725369

Just the drums: http://soundclick.com/share?songid=7725370

It's a section of Octavarium by Dream Theater.

Drums are drum kit from hell superior (the first one)

Synth is Arturia Mood Modular synth

Bass is just some generic logic bass

Guitars were my old Mesa Studio Pre with some cab impulses

Sharing this for the lulz. It'll make people feel better about themselves, if anything.
Second track just uploaded, the "Music tech class is fun" one, which shows about the full extent of what I can do with Reason. The "Crappy Techno Thing" too.

hey, could you guys give me your opinions on this mix i just finished this morning. Its a remix of a song we recorded 9 or so months ago. I used the drum tracks from the recording we did for our EP that is being mixed and I retracked the guitars with my AD30 and Rocker 30.

http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=49ce8a9438d08ec819747bd91027d4ddf5eda69b b18467d3

its called "LightAMatch_MixDown"

let me know what you guys think of the mix. I would like to get a lot of opinions on it so I can polish it more (If need be) before i replace the old recording with this one on the myspace.

thanks.

Hiya Guys,

It's completely my fault, i got a message about cancelling an industry gig and i cancelled the one wrong... Im really sorry but the date was given to another band and has been advertised as such...

I understand if you do not want to rearrange the gig but really hope you can see it was an honest mistake and hopefully we can arrange another date for in the future!!

Em

Guess thats the trouble with being called "Industry"...people cancel gigs on your ass! haha

hey, could you guys give me your opinions on this mix i just finished this morning...

Not bad. It's not a bad song, cool harmonies, nice use of the channels, but kinda lacking on the bass spectrum with both volume and harmonies (well, doing something other than the root of the chord), but most of that is probably my laptop's speakers. Pretty well done.

Also, I just wrote all of that and I'm not even halfway through the song. o_o This is really long. Which isn't a bad thing.

montgomery
17-07-2009, 05:06 AM
I did some stuff besides roots on the bass, but not much since it isn't the focal point of the song. Thanks for listening to the tune. I am finishing the master track tomorrow. The bass isn't mixed as low as you think it might be, its probably your lap top speakers.

Even if you think something isn't the focal point of the song, it still doesn't hurt to expand upon it and make it sound more full, otherwise the song just ends up sounding flatter than it should. I'm not saying that you should go back and change anything, but just keep in mind things like contrary motion and woking. When another instrument goes to a chord that is lower in pitch, that's doesn't mean the bass has to, too; it can always go up. Just trying to help. :)

It's still a good song and I'll listen to it later with headphones. Haha.

Start writing with a friend, then that friend might know someone to play an instrument, and the new somebody might know somebody. That is kind of how my band formed and we actually write good songs and get along.

Thanks!

I use Nuendo for my recording and mixing, which is basically the same as Cubase.

The guitar tracks were recorded into my Pod, but I also put a mic in front of my electric guitar when I recorded the performance and panned them to each side. So even though it sounds like there are two guitars on the tracks, there is only one performance. Gave it a pretty earthy feel, while still having the power of the electric guitar sound.

Bass was recorded clean, and I fed that signal through my distorted bass chain which is around 10 different plug-ins (ampeg bass amp emulator, various distortion and synth plugins that I got for free), five for each channel, and mixed it so that there's a blend of clean bass in the middle and distorted bass on the left and right.

Synths and whatnot are the standard ones that comes with Nuendo.

Drums are programmed by myself.

You've summed up my EP.

I had literally 28 songs and kept recording them so I had a collection of half done tunes. When it came to finishing them, I just went; 'fuck, this is meant to be an EP!'

So I then focused on 4-6 songs but I still think I might cut two from the EP.

I wrote six of the tracks in the same timeframe, around a month ago, the elaborated on them as the mixing process went on. I doubt I could get together a full album before I got tired of whatever thing I was doing, and started moving on to a new project. Therefore, I have to keep it short

What worked out well for me was I was able toperfect and change the music over time then recently got my guitarist to help produce stuff as well which freshened things up so now its just writing lyrics and getting a singer to sing them. Then playing live begins :D

Haha cheers, number 3 is only like a Reprise of one of the songs that im still writing that stemmed from that. All the instrument (bar drum tracks) we're recorded on my Korg X5 (retro!) and the drum tracks were recorded by me at my mates and compressed/EQ'ed/Fucked about with so they sound a bit different.

6 is my Chip track I made ages ago, its quite random :p

And as of yet there aren't any tracks up on the web, but there will be soon - im going to see if I can get the EP onto iTunes, if it is possible.

Any moar song love?

It's annoying that I can't see the crowd as much. I played bass for years and I liked being up front. I didn't really want to play drums, I just do it because our drummer left. It's still fun though, and I don't really mind being at the back.

What's annoying is having to set up the bass rig for every gig!

Yeah, but playing drums shouldn't be classed as a lesser instrument. My boyfriend has been getting this crap with his band for years, right down to people in the band just placing their drinks on his drum kit, or even sitting on it during a gig!

A musical instrument that you have to take time to learn should be just as visible as the next. I hate having to struggle to see every member of a band.
I had a friend, years ago, he was a fantastic drummer, but sadly at the age of just 29 he died. Even sadder was that every gig photo of them playing, you couldn't see him. It got into the local paper, but the photo they used was a really grainy one from a rehearsal.

Jupiter_Moonchild

Well the band my boyfriend is in now sometimes has 3 on stage, sometimes it has 5 and on other rather busy times has 7, the lead and bass players always stand forward of the drum kit and so when the others climb on stage to do their thing, he ends up with a wall of people in front of him and he doesn't get to see the crowd at all.

I'm not sure if he had the same hassles when he was in The Veil, but there used to always be a scrum for the monitors.

It sucks if you're always the one doing the setting up. You should ask for 2 wages, one as a performer and one as the roadie. :D

Because where I'm usually playing guitar, it's completely unnecessary and would rather try and keep the stage volume down as it's not nice not hearing things for several days afterwards, so just find it easier to tell them not to bother.

YAY! At last a guitarist with some sense of volume.
The guitarist and the bass player in the band keep turning it up and it always bleeds into the vocal mics.
The last gig was so loud I had to have earplugs and I wished I wasn't so close to the amps. They've been told time and time again to turn down but they just fiddle with the knobs and then turn it back up again after just one song.

And lead guitarist needs to be taught to NOT put new strings on the guitar 10 mins before a gig!

It's fucking ridiculous, all they need to do is put them all at the same gain settings and give us enough volume on stage. Given that we know the songs and they don't, we can then mix ourselves using the handy 'volume control' built in to only every fucking keyboard ever!

the soundguy on friday was clearly half deaf. The guy who's there normally is absolutely amazing. He even helps you swap cymbals etc. This guy was your stereotypical argumentative cunt who made not only FOH twice as loud as it needed to be, but also on the stage!! I had to tell him how to EQ the kick drum (it's a hollow stage) 'cos I couldn't hear anything over BOOM BOOM BOOOM even then the monitor next to me sounded like a full, cranked marshall stack. Jesus, thank fuck for ear plugs.

It's a fact that working at these sorts of volumes for years will destroy your ears, which is why so many of them have it so loud at gigs.

i used to have a pretty big performance problem if the sound on stage wasnt good, or the monitor mix sucked. these days its ok though cos i mix my own IEM mix.. its a good way to get around that problem, cos it ruined a few gigs.
