Martin Grech is easily one of the most exciting and dynamic rock acts around. Whether the ferocious intensity with a full band, or the fragile beauty of his solo acoustic stuff he has blown me away each time Ive seen him live (about 6 times).
He's playing an acoustic set at our (Lone Shark) birthday bash at Exeter Cavern on April 7th - there's an excellent supporting line-up too (Worry Dolls, Mad Library, Ampersand, Lloyd Williams) plus FREE BADGES and more birthday tomfoolery - all for the ridiculously low price of £5 +b/f - tickets available NOW from Solo Music, Exeter (01392 425309)
More info on gig and all the acts on the 'Live' page at www.loneshark.co.uk

Hows this for an exclusive....
Lone Shark will be infiltrating the capital's conciousness as of March 25th.
That's right, we'll be promoting a rather exclusive, very low-key Martin Grech acoustic gig in London in less than 3 weeks time!
The show will be on Thursday March 25th at The Buffalo Bar in Islington, which is a very nice and intimate (150 capacity including performers etc!) place that is fast becoming one of London's hottest new venues.
The show will be £5 entry, and places must be reserved in advance. If you would like to attend this show please mail martingrech@loneshark.co.uk with the names of those you are reserving places for and a contact phone number.
If you have reserved places and discover somebody is unable to attend, please let us know ASAP as demand for this concert will be high!
Would be ace to see some of you there!

I think the afro rocks.
When he plays with a full band, the sound is very different from his acoustic shows, ie
full band= ridiculously heavy riffery & awesomely big sound
acoustic = beautifully fragile & stunning vocal acrobatics

I think you might find yourself liking both in equal measure...it's like Joe has pointed out...they're both really contrasting sounds, the heavy stuff is so mental and intense and then his individual acoustic stuff is beautiful. Grech is a really talanted young man...and he has an amazing voice to say he's only 20 years old. I think he's one of those artists who's a good "allrounded" he can do any style and it'll always sound good. I'm making myself want to see him live again now heheh!
The only thing you don't get with his acoustic stuff, is seeing him go totally mental throwing himself around the stage, I love seeing someone getting really lost in their music..makes me jealous that I am not good enough as a musician to get up on stage and play songs to other people and do stuff like that. Ah well, watching other people is the next best thing.

The new album is gonna be a huge leap forward I think... I mean Open Heart Zoo is fantastic but somewhat 'bitty' as it was all recorded over a couple of years from when he was about 15 - 17 & before he'd really played live.
His sound has progressed alot, as has his songwriting - and experience from working songs live will help make it flow more nicely - when it comes out (hopefully in Summer) it is gonna blow your socks off.
What did people think of the gig last night? I thought it was superb, despite the shambolic start (1st support didnt arrive until after he was meant to have finished!)...
I dont think it was one of Martin's best performances, but even a below-par performance from him blows most live acts around out of the water!
Roll on Exeter :D
how great!
i heard the new singles out soon??? any ideas when??

if any of you martin fans havent heard yet:
Martin Grech October acoustic stuff...
Hi there...Martin's new album is expected in the new year but as a stop-gap (and defo not a taster of the new album!) Martin has recorded Rest In Peace a collection of 4 simple acoustic tracks for download each week throughout October.
Sun 3rd Oct: Mighty Hands.
Sun 10th Oct: Gratefully Punished.
Sun 17th Oct: Father & Mother Figure.
Sun 24th Oct: Freedom, Warmth & Security.
To support these release Martin will be doing about 8 acoustic gigs, click on the TOUR DATES button above for more details.
also this was posted by martins manager on ohz:
Hi guys, about the 'small charge' for the download singles. The price will vary depending on what website you download from...there will be a dozen or so websites that you can get the track from and i think iTunes is the cheapest at 79p...Napster I think is 99p...and thru martingrech.co.uk (which will actually link you to download from Island Rec's although it wont seem like that) is also 99p...I'm not sure about the other sites but if you dont have a credit card there is a system to pay through your mobile phone...only issue with that is the mobile phone operator screw you for an extra 51p!! So £1.50!!
Martin and I were keen to get the costs down as low as possible but in order to qualify for the new download chart there has to be a charge. I appreciate you may be use to the freebie internet culture but please help us out on this one...as you know Martin struggles to get on the radio and cos of the way the music industry works cant get into the regular charts...getting into the regular charts doesnt float our boat but sadly generates radio play and a higher profile and therefore keeps everyone happy and enables Martin to keep writing and recording...the new download chart is great for Martin as it will give him a chance to get some profile, particularly with stations like Radio 1 and Virgin doing a weekly download chart count down. You wont believe how few download are needed in a week to break the Top 20...Keane only had 350 downloads last week for a No.19 position. I Am Chromosome had 1200 downloads in week 1 and 2750 downloads across 4 weeks. 1200 downloads next week would give Martin a No.3 position in the download charts, which is pretty got without any radio play. I'm excited about the idea of developing Martin's career in a new and uncompromising way. We gave away Chromosome last year, so please support these releases this year...Martin is keen to continue doing downloads as extra tracks...and support for these will enable us to do some freebie's at a later date. The new album is sounding great, perhaps we can return the favour by having a playback gig? Am thinking off the top of my head now, but we could hire a small venue and have a playback session and get your views. have loads to drink and then fall over...something like that. Hope you enjoy the music and the gigs. Best wishes, Andy T.
so be sure to download the tracks, so we can get martin into the download charts and make him very famous! :D

i have a copy of the album already, its a bit jumpy tho, bad rip of the cd.
i must say though, its very very very very good
also! i saw him on tuesday just gone at the met lounge in peterboro, i would advise anyone who hasnt seen him to see him! seriously, he opened the set with guiltless and it was one of the best songs ive seen live ever, so powerfull, i wanna see him again :( this is the third time ive seen him now and he gets better every time, so underated, and such a nice guy, i met him at the buffalo bar when he did an acoustic set downstairs, twas so cool
I've seen him....4 times I think...and the last time was a couple of years ago now! I want to see him aaaagaaaain...and I can't wait for this album.
He is a lovely guy, very shy though I found when I met him! He kept bowing and smiling in a giddy kind of way hehehe. Very underrated indeed...needs a lot more recognition.

yes, yes, yes - if he's playing near you go see him - I've seen him about 10 times now (get ME!) and Im still hugely excited about seeing him again next week.
Listened to the album a lot over the past month, and it is brilliant... some parts instantaneously magic... other parts grow and grow on you, overall it's pretty awesome though.
Matts half brother - I was more than likely on the door when you came to Buffalo Bar. Havent done any london shows since so the very basic page is still up at www.londonshark.co.uk - wahey!

His first album (Open Heart Zoo) is quite disjointed, but has some awesome moments, whilst new album (Unholy) is much more coherent as an album, and is darker, more brooding... not out til June though.
Both are definitely worth getting though, and Id say both are growers... you might not be sure what to make at first, but after a few listens you'll become an obsessive.

its not a bad thing, i personally just dont like comparing, i try not to, i like everything to be different e.g when people say debase mason's grog is the new stockholm syndrome, pisses me off, i would like to think they are moving in a new direction, doing domething different, like martin grech is doing on his new album, i really like it. i dont think he sounds that much like thom yorke anyway, cos thom usually sounds a bit spazzed whereas martins voice is much more powerful and professional

I saw him at the start of 2003, but I'd already got his first album by that point so knew that not everything was going to be as "gentle" as Open Heart Zoo but it was still a surprise exactly how heavy he is live!

That acoustic one was just a stop gap really, he'd been randomly drumming in a metal band to help out some mates for about a year (I know! wtf?) so hadn't really done much and thought he'd throw out a quick one before moving out to America to do a film soundtrack and get his new project together.

There really does seem to be a missing back catalogue of heavy songs! When I first saw him live on the Unholy tour it was intensely heavy from start to finish, but over his first 2 albums there's only, what, 5 heavy songs (Here It Comes, Dali, I Am Chromosome, Guiltless, & Worldly Divine). He nearly released an album of them last year(ish) under the name of Meatsuit, but then dropped them.
The new quietly released facebook page says those Meatsuit demos may be released around the same time as the new album though: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=525395413#!/pages/Martin-Grech-official/358290270815

I don't know if you'll find them, but some of his B sides are very heavy. Particularly "headsty", which one of my favorite songs ever. I think it was on "push" but i'm not sure.

What is Meta?
Meta is a small collection of demos in various states of completion and production quality spanning a period of about 3-4 years. Including original and remade demos from the Meatsuit project, and early attempts at a fourth official record.
The work covers a very difficult period of learning, technologically, creatively and emotionally, including some of the more enlightened moments, and some of the more desolate spaces, which, although cringe worthy, are a reflection of the state in which many of the songs were created.
A lot of the work from this period was completely lost, when in one of the more desolate phases, I completely erased a couple of years worth of work, to the point of complete un-retrievable deletion. So, a lot of what exists on Meta is what my partner Lily managed to find in Mp3 format, hidden on burnt discs lying around the house, and in the glove compartment of the car. So, thanks to her, half of what makes up Meta still exists. As for the work lost, some of it may be better off left to rest in pieces.
Meta could probably be described both artistically and personally with an analogy of "the frantic fumbling in the dark before one finds the light switch", including a lot of the fear, doubt, and desperation that can ultimately lead to the first breaking of light over the horizon.
Were did the artwork come from?
Tyler Ebling very graciously offered a work he did of me in return for the appearance of the song Metamorpha, which had to be remade as it was amoung the many tracks totally lost.
What inspired the Versive video?
The inspiration behind the Versive video was a last minute decision that a video might go along well with the release of Meta. In terms of concept, the only idea was to have lots of colour. The content represents the spirit of experimentation within extreme limitation, and practical restriction, in the form of using only an in-built web-cam, and an old version of 'imovie'. The imagery moves from one abstract idea to the next, and is connected to the song only in its rhythmic and atmospheric intent and editing style. I was also fortunate to have creative and practical help from my partner, Lily, who also appears in the video in various states of abstraction.
Where, and what, is The Watcher?
The Watcher is what I would call the 4th official record, and if I can convince myself to stop tampering with it, it is basically done. It is a manifestation of the moments, post switching that "light" on, and the first steps on planet earth with a new way of seeing. As for when it is going to come out, I am unsure. I am confident that it will come out, though, which is a lot more than I would have said at one point.
Over all, The Watcher represents the movement from the state of intentional self destruction, to a more
conscious intention toward inner, and therefore outer, peace.

Rough video of the first track:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_BUGXqhMag
But it's not that representative of the album. Really recommend listening to the samples on the facebook page. It's pretty much every style he's ever tried. You have lots of snarled heavy industrial/EBM/Metal tracks, but at least half of it is also a mixture of very dreamy atmospheric tracks, often with added electronic stuff, and the odd stripped back piano/acoustic track all with his Thom Yorke-esque croon. My only criticism is that he doesn't often let rip with his falsetto Jeff Buckley range screams. But from those "trailers" for The Watcher (see last page), it looks like he might have gone back to that on the upcoming new album proper!
It may be an album of abandoned demos, but there's not a genuinely bad song on it for me, and many of them are genuinely awesome.
Sophie.

Okay, barely managing to contain my excitement here. My love for his music has only ended up increasing ever since he seemed to disappear off the face of the earth. I'm so pleased to actually hear something 'new' from him, even if it is just a collection of demos.
And another proper album hopefully on it's way soon! :awesome:

Martin's set up a little site where you can listen to all of his albums, along with some cool b-sides and live tracks: http://martingrech.bandcamp.com/
It is definitely worth checking out the live tracks. Some of them are fucking incredible. The live version of Guiltless sends shivers down my spine whenever he lets rip with his undead Jeff Buckley screams. Seriously amazing.

No idea why Aldelvice, Spit-Bowl, and Draw Blood were never recorded/released. All three are brilliant.
Adelvice (http://martingrech.bandcamp.com/track/adelvice-live-acoustic) is beautiful.

Hmm, I haven't been keeping myself updated at all. Meta Volume 1 is the new album and 2 is a collection of random songs that was never finished?
EDIT: Forget what I said, just read the posts above

Draw Blood and Guiltless, oh my god.
Adelvice didn't say anything to me really. Not yet anyway.

I don't want to deprive Martin of what little income he's getting from music atm, but as he's posted on his facebook page that he can't sell the live tracks as he doesn't technically have the rights to do so (i'm guessing Island own them), you can download them with: http://bandcamptomp3.co.uk/Home.aspx

Thanks. I think I am really falling in love with this guy atm. I heard him for the first time like...years ago, but never got into the music except for a few songs.
Where does he usually tour? Any chance of seeing him close to Sweden in the future? (You seem to be the one with the answers)

Doubt it to be honest. He used to tour the UK extensively for his first two albums, both fairly big underground/cult hits, but since then, he parted with his record label (Island) after their restructuring, quietly released an acoustic-country album (March of the Lonely) out of his own pocket, then moved to the US and went pretty much silent for 3-4 years. I doubt he's toured his own stuff since about 2006. Seems like he went pretty mad. Fame and pressure really seemed to get to him badly. Before leaving the UK he spent about a year or so anonymously playing drums(!) for some small London metal band, then, after he abruptly moved to the US, he tried to start a gothic-industrial metal band called "Meatsuit" (which is essentially what Meta 1 & 2 consist of), but never released anything and seemed to get bored and further depressed by it - in fact in the release of Meta 1 he said that the demos that remain are the one's his girlfriend saved, as he destroyed all of the tracks he possessed.
But from what little he's said this year he seems to be in better shape now, largely by the sounds of it thanks to this girlfriend. He has The Watcher, his fourth album proper, recorded (Trailer clip HERE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EzzpkqVZwRw)) and from his few comments seems happy with it, plus he's finally released the Meatsuit demos for money & boosting fan awareness, and has now set up a Facebook page and re-set up some kind of ramshackle website. So things are looking up, even if most people have forgotten him by now. Really hoping The Watcher will be as good as that clip sounds! Will have been worth the wait then. And who knows, maybe he will tour again after that! Although i'd be very surprised if it's outside the US (or maybe the UK) if he does. And he may still be too emotionally/mentally fragile for it. I hope he does tour though. I only know of him thanks to seeing him in 2005, and I can honestly say it was in the top 3 gigs of my life. Truly terrifying and unforgettable. If anything he tones his vocals down on record (as you can hear from that Guiltless live session!).

Damn, that's more than I expected
Really sad to hear about his personal problems :( I guess I will have to travel to see him. England isn't THAT far away.
And god, so much to go through! I have been listening all night, but had to take a break because it was getting a bit too much :p And yeah, his live vocals are something completely different. The cover of Dream Brother is just breathtaking.
Do you know if he has done some proper deep vocals? I would like to hear him do something different.

His deepest vocals are all on "March Of The Lonely." In fact he barely breaks out of low, toned-down vocals for the entire album. I find it patchy myself, but I think there are some brilliant tracks in there too! Especially the first 5 songs, all of which I love.

Wow. I am loving Seed Of A Seed (http://martingrech.bandcamp.com/track/seed-of-a-seed) for it's fragile stripped down beauty.
The Loathsome (http://martingrech.bandcamp.com/track/the-loathsome) might be my favourite to have come out of this collection though, along with that live version of Guiltless. But then I love everything that came out of the Unholy-era. And Headsty is pretty fun too for its sheer heaviness!

Ok. Martin Grech has scrapped The Watcher. And hinted that he might not play live or release an album again. Who knows. But tied with his destruction of most of his music only a year ago (some of which were recovered by his girlfriend and then released as Meta 1), I think it's safe to assume complete metal breakdown.
BUT, he released Meta 2 last year, again through his Official Facebook page, which seems to contain many of The Watcher tracks, or at least one of the teaser tracks and many others in a similar atmospheric/minimal/electronic style. AND, he's released other tracks for FREE on his Soundcloud account: http://soundcloud.com/martin-grech
If you still want to hear The Watcher then I'd recommend piecing it together from these sources yourself. After much listening I think it would have been something like this (I've linked to easily playable tracks where I could, although a couple will only open with Spotify):
1) Zenith (http://soundcloud.com/martin-grech/zenith) (Soundcloud, iTunes from the compilation album "Residual Hum from a Parallel Universe", was Teaser Video 1)
2) Spectral Brush Strokes (http://soundcloud.com/martin-grech/spectral-brush-strokes) (Soundcloud)
3) Inside Out (http://martingrech.bandcamp.com/track/inside-out) (Meta 2)
4) Shadow Circuits (http://martingrech.bandcamp.com/track/shadow-circuits) (Meta 1)
5) Spirit Dancing Through Celestial Landscapes (http://soundcloud.com/martin-grech/spirit-dancing-through) (Soundcloud)
6) Everything Dancing (http://martingrech.bandcamp.com/track/everything-dancing) (Meta 2)
7) Newborn (http://martingrech.bandcamp.com/track/newborn) (Meta 2)
8) Lillies (http://open.spotify.com/local/Martin+Grech/Meta+%3a+Volume+1/Lilies/184) (Meta 1)
9) The Child Ordained (http://martingrech.bandcamp.com/track/the-child-ordained) (Meta 2)
10) Absence (http://martingrech.bandcamp.com/track/absence) (Meta 2)
11) Smoke and Mirrors (http://open.spotify.com/local/Martin+Grech/Meta+%3a+Volume+2/Smoke+and+Mirrors/204) (Meta 2)
12) Lapse (http://open.spotify.com/local/Martin+Grech/Meta+%3a+Volume+2/Lapse/205) (Meta 2)
13) Samsara (http://martingrech.bandcamp.com/track/samsara) (Meta 2, was Teaser Video 2)
14) Emptiness (http://open.spotify.com/local/Martin+Grech/Meta+%3a+Volume+2/Emptiness/183) (Meta 2)
15) The Feeling You Are Losing Everything (http://martingrech.bandcamp.com/track/the-feeling-you-are-losing-everything) (Meta 2)
It really is fucking amazing! I can't recommend enough spending the effort and bit of money needed to piece it together (or you could rip the tracks from his bandcamp, but that's a bit unfair on a probably broke musician). It's a very bleak listen with very self-scathing, depressed lyrics, but it could have been his masterpiece. It's certainly not far off it!
There are too many tracks there really, but I had to include 15 out of over 50 tracks, because they are damn good. In the above order, it even flows well! Those 15 are very definitely of the same style, mostly very well produced, and stick out as being tied and similar. They certainly stand out amid a deluge of half-finished and sadly quite poor metal or Cure-esque demos - speaking as someone who loved his previous metal tracks. And The Cure.
EDIT: Actually, I'm not sure if you can buy them any more. It looks like he's now deleted Meta 1 & 2 from his bandcamp. Although he's moved a couple of the tracks from those two albums into his random collection of b-sides from over the years, which can't be bought. Most can be listened to at least on Spotify. In fact, I think all of them can. Which is odd as they're the only Meta 1 & 2 tracks that have been put up there. I take this as a ringing endorsement of my track list!

I haven't heard that much Martin Grech but this is my favourite song so far.
