you can't really judge a band after hearing one song. for a band that hasn't been around too long, they're really good live. go and see them when they next tour. seriously, you won't regret it.

I quite liked bloc party before I saw them at Reading. Their set was dull.

04-09-2004, 04:54 PM
did you just have some kinda freak illness at the time they played, that disabled hearing?

some of the songs were quite dull, yes, but that new song they played was awesome. the sound quality in general at reading wasn't that good tho. i suggest listening to them in a smaller venue, maybe?

Nah, I just really don't think they're for me. They were slightly dwarfed by the size of the tent but..I spent most of the gig trying to plan my escape.

looking forward to their album purely on the back of Banquet. Yet to get a good listen to any of their other songs though. And yes, I'm impressed by a black frontman to a band like them, hopefully it'll open up rock a little to the black community, but I doubt it.

they left Little Thoughts off the album because it doesn't fit in.

the album is quite dark, and broody in a sense, and Little Thoughts is quite a cheerful song. they said it'd be on another new EP with more new songs, don't know when tho.

i don't see why everyone loves Bloc Party so much, i can't stand the vocals

Me either. The production & the guitars sound terrible. Even if it is intentional, all their songs sound as badly mixed as a bedroom recorded demo. Awful. Don't get it at all. The music isn't even interesting. Nothing about them is.

I think Little Thoughts is just a catchy pop song, and she's hearing voices is interesting enough to keep me listening to them. That Steve Lamacq live session is the only download I can get for Little Thoughts though and that's fuckin' shite.

Class of 2005: Bloc Party

If it's got to the start of the new year and you still haven't heard of Bloc Party, you must have had your head buried in concrete. Possibly the most tipped band of 2005, they're so good their potential even echoed back to the start of last year. In 2004 they took over the underground, in the next twelve months they'll be household names.

After all, there aren't many bands around who produce such angular, energetic guitar based music. Fewer still actually bring a brain to the equation, but Bloc Party manage both with ease. A band that look smart before they even open their mouths, it's easy to believe they understand it all far, far better than we ever will.

Take frontman Kele Okereke. Yes, he is in a guitar band and happens to be black, have a brain, and can express his opinion. While it may not be the norm yet, stereotypes have no currency within the confines of a Bloc Party gig. From his individual vocal stylings, yelping out lyrics smarter than your average New Cross band, there's a bewitching aspect to his performance, and that of Bassist and fellow vocalist Gordon Moakes. The kind of chemistry not seen since the early days of Coxon and Albarn, but in a far more introspective way, it's genuinely gripping.

The songs more than back it up. From the near hypnotic 'She's Hearing Voices' to the recent Top 40 single 'Helicopter', they're full of the most deceptive hook lines you're likely to ever come across. You wouldn't know it to look at them, but a Bloc Party track is likely to stay stuck in the back of your head for longer than any other. What more would you expect from a band with members who reference everything from Kate Bush and Fleetwood Mac to Sonic Youth and Dizzee Rascal.

2005 sees the release of the band's debut album 'Silent Alarm'. It's already leaked to the file sharing networks, so no doubt quite a lot of you are aware of it's genius. Those who aren't should make the best of their ignorance - by mid February there will be no avoiding Bloc Party.

Listened to the alb on Friday evening at work, but i'm still undecided about it :stunned:

I like the singles "Helicopter" & "So Here We Are" very much, but I need to listen to the album more to make up my mind about these guys.

The drummer is an AFC Bournemouth fan though :D  (as proven in the "So Here We Are" vid) so that may just sway me to like them

I just listened to the album on the way to uni today. I was promised the best thing to happen to music since..................ever. Its a good album don't get me wrong but it surely hasn't re-invented the wheel and changed my musical perceptions as much as it was promised. So much hype surrounding a band can only do bad things. They are pretty fuckin good but all this attention they have gotten over the past while may only serve to harm them when this album actually hits the shops and people realise that they may have been going a little overboard.

recommended though

They seem a good band. I've heard banquet quite a few times, and while the first couple of minutes is average/good, the last minute sounds great.
Out of the ''2005 wave'' they're my favourite band...much better then the Bravery. I don't think I'll actually buy the album though....might get someone to burn it for me.

They are a million times better live than on record. I was a casual fan before I saw them at Reading. Not that the album is bad, it's great, but I don't think it really captured their energy very well at all.

The funny thing was he climbed up that pole way before they even came on. I'm surprised authorities didn't notice him earlier, especially as everyone was jeering him on when he did climb it it. Funnily enough the same people booed when he was asked to get down...

I was laughing my head off  It seemed a bit of a surreal thing to just happen during a performance.

I was standing by the pole on the opposite side of the tent. There was a fence up around it so there was no one directly in front of me, and I could push up on it to get a good look

Bloc Party release their second full-length album A Weekend In The City - 5th February 2007 through Wichita Recordings. Produced by Jacknife Lee and recorded at Grouse Lodge Studios in Ireland. Bloc Party\'s newest collection of songs is a stunning, intense and brilliant follow-up to their celebrated debut Silent Alarm. The album will be preceded by the single The Prayer, released 29th January 2007.

Upon release of Silent Alarm in February 2005, Bloc Party were catapulted into the global spotlight, gathering worldwide fans and critical acclaim, with the NME voting Silent Alarm "Album of the Year". They have gone on to sell over a million copies of the album worldwide.

A Weekend in The City is inspired by lead singer Kele Okereke\'s interest in what he calls "the living noise of a metropolis." On Weekend, the band captures every detail from ebullient to the mundane - of daily life in a modern city, and the quiet desolation that suffuses everything from commuting to casual sex, from going out on a Friday night to the long ride home in the early hours of the morning. These are songs desperate to understand the meaning that pulses under the moments of our everyday: there are bursting with tension, paranoia, sadness, love and an intense need for reason as to how city life has become so displacing.

The track listing for A Weekend in the City is...

01. Song For Clay (Disappear Here)
02. Hunting For Witches
03. Waiting For the 7.18
04. The Prayer
05. Uniform
06. On
07. Where Is Home?
08. Kreuzberg
09. I Still Remember
10. Sunday
11. SRXT

I heard something about them toning it down a little, but also something about them wanting to "do a radiohead" and be at least slightly experimental.

I hope he doesn't go for a much softer vocal delivery, at least not too much. It's one of the best things about them.

Be warned though -

'according to people who have heard the album, this demo is not representative of the energy and development in the album version of the track. A very rough sketch of an idea, as it were.'

it's pretty good actually. you can tell it's bloc party, yet you feel that they've definately matured. they took a good approach when making it, as it seems like it's not rushed and it's not overthought either.

i'm still kinda bummed about them having to cancel their st. louis date, but then again, they were opening for panic at the disco. :stunned:

Yeah it was a blessing in disguse, Tong's collasped lung. I'm in Vancouver and almosted wanted to buy a ticket and then leave, but now they will have to do a small(er) venue tour of North America... I don't want to see Bloc Party in a huge arena anyways! :D

I did that. I bought tickets just to see them open and then leave. The energy of the crowd was really pathetic...my friend and I felt a bit old to be in the pit with the emo teenagers. We managed to find other Bloc fans, and they were in their 20's, so we felt better. It was a horrible crowd though. We were the only ones into it. Oh, and during the show, we DID see Tong wince in pain, sort of lean over and wince, but we didn't think anything of it until we heard the news....can't wait til these fuckers come back!

one of the rules to being emo - dont jump at shows! lol - if you havent heard the emo song look for it on youtube

The new album isnt very good in my opinion. It lost everything that was good with the last album..it seems very bland and boring now. They had great potential to make something amazing and they've blew it on this.

after changing my opinion on the new album, after several listens its rather good up till about track 6...i kind of lose interest after that, i will keep listening to it though its bound to grow on me the more i do...quite political...but then again, most albums now-a-days are.

I was wondering why the fuck he was so mopey in the new video...especially with the chicks going at it...but yeah it clicked. ;)

I can't.

A. I don't have any invites
B. Oink is fucked up for me, no matter how much I upload, it doesn't register so as soon as I get an account, a month or so later it gets deleted.

:'(!

I'm not abusing it whilst I have a week left.

ahhh i see, that always happens to me. no problem, cheers tho. what i usually do is just download tonnes when i have the 2 week ratio watch in place, you can get upto 10gb before it's deleted anyway, so i downloaded about 3gb of music, and loads of applications, even windows vista! haha.
