On the old QOTSA Website, they used to have a family tree of bands and it was fookin huge. Started with Sons of Kyuss, then to Kyuss, then branches out into about 50 different bands. And thus is how I heard of Masters of Reality. My friend is really into anything that was on that tree, and he's played me some Masters of Reality. it's pretty cool. I've been meaning to buy one of thier albums too. Needs some mohoneh first.

Those pale in comparison to the real one. They miss out a lot I don't remember. But it's probably the best we'll get *sniffs*

The real one was like...all flash animated and you held a torch over the tree...I think that was the last version they had of it...

Good work though, Cap'n GemCee

"Rock's a realm of huge personalities, a place where modest, quiet-spoken types usually fall through the cracks. A place where everyone from Alice Cooper and Iggy Pop to Gwen Stefani and Justin Timberlake proved that, at least in the public eye, a charismatic front man's worth twice that of a shredding backing band.

Goon Moon's songwriting axis might have a thing or two to tell you about the rock's inequities toward the backing players. Jeordie White spent the better part of his creative career goofily calling himself Twiggy Ramirez and playing Robin to Marilyn Manson's Batman. After shaking out of Manson's world, he landed on his feet, sort of: Now he's one of those mostly anonymous dudes who fills out Nine Inch Nails' touring lineup behind Trent Reznor. Chris Goss, White's partner in Goon Moon, counts himself as a member of Queens of the Stone Age -- at least until band leader Josh Homme flips out and fires the rest of the band again.

So Goss and White haven't positioned themselves to be much more than hired hands working to elevate a charismatic front man. That doesn't mean the duo's completely defunct of songwriting talent. Stealing time away from their nine-to-five on major-label acts, the pair rev Goon Moon back up for Licker's Last Leg, and in doing so, hit up rock's most basic touchstones. Namely, finding a sleazy groove and riding it for all its worth and putting an almost religious belief in the power of the six string to save souls. And if the act's output isn't exactly monumental or groundbreaking (it takes more cues from QOTSA than ever before), Goon Moon's at least confident enough to make Licker's a solid effort.

Although Goon Moon isn't afraid to let a few experimental bits and bobs sneak into the mix (see the nine-minute, eight-section "The Golden Ball" and all its non-sequitur glory), the duo's essentially just another hot, sweaty rock outfit. "An Autumn that Came Too Soon" unfurls bubbles of distorted guitar leads and sleek arrangements that lend a little elan to straightforward rock. "Lay Down" and "Tip Toe" put a passive, laid-back twist on QOTSA styled rock, while "Pin Eyed Boy" is more fundamental, retreating into arena-rock trappings with big, juicy guitar leads and anthemic vocals. White and Goss' paychecks usually come from bands playing around on rock's edges, but Goon Moon's a chance to slip back into the easygoing world of no-frills rock.

Goon Moon might spark a little bit of interest in fans of Queens -- the act's most natural antecedent -- but it also proves something else: That when they're not backing up charismatic rockers like Homme, Manson or Reznor White and Goss still aren't ready to make the jump to full-blown front men.

- Matt Schild"

what a shit review. That shit about Josh firing "the rest of the band". Nick went in like...2004 :stunned: 3 years. What's the real journalistic point of bringing that up?

Velouria
14-06-2007, 09:42 PM

Just need to get my Lanegan/Campbell ticket sorted out and June will be an awesome gig month!

Yes, do iiiit!! Ticketweb sent my Lanegan/Campbell ticket a couple of weeks ago.
I've just realised I've got the Foos on the 7th, Lanegan/Campbell on the 10th and MOR on the 18th. Busy month.

SMS? I dunno, I always select the first class post delivery option and they come via Royal Mail. I've not has a problem yet, plus the tickets generally arrive a few days after you've ordered them. They also are usually quite a bit cheaper than Seetickets and Ticketmaster.

Meat up would be grand. Sadly I won't be able to get there much before doors open as I can never get parked before 6:30 due to resident's parking restrictions.

Ooooh, they'd better play Third Man on the Moon.

I wish it were easier to get hold of the earlier albums like Sunrise on the Sufferbus. What would be awesome would be if they sold them at the gig, but that's just a dream.

Shit, shit, shit, I've just had an email from ticketweb saying that the gig has been cancelled. :'(:'(:'(:'(

From myspace:

04/23/08

Chris Goss has announced the postponement of the new Masters Of Reality release as well as the summer tour, due to the fact that he is still in the studio recording what he considers the best Masters of Reality record ever.

As Chris Goss quotes:
"I sincerely regret if the tours' delay is causing any inconvenience and disappointment. I can only say that I have not stopped and cannot stop writing new music for the album. I believe it is our best work to date. We will bring this on large and correctly; both in album form and in the live arena. The summer will bring the album. The autumn will bring a Masters of Reality tour of a quality I've waited my whole life to present to you."

I've still never heard these beasts. Do they sound like the only album they've ever listened to is Master of Reality? Which album should I start with?

Haha, the best imho is Welcome to the Western Lodge, it's fabulous. I have e-copies of Sunrise on the Sufferbus and Give Us Barabbas and I want them on CD but can't ever find them. All three of those are omg but I fucking love Welcome to the Western Lodge. It's immense.

Argh, it's annoying that their older albums like Sufferbus are so hard to get hold off. Re-release plz Chris. :(

I'd say to get Welcome To the Western Lodge or Deep In the Hole.
The live album Flak'n'Flight is also recommended.
