I recently discovered Muse and feel in love with their music. I like their slower songs in particular, so are there any other bands besides the obvious Radiohead that sound similar to muse?

Hmmm.... apart from Muse not sounding like Radiohead? I hear Dream Theatre are pretty Muse-esque though I can't confirm it.
New band called Fear of Music, they're clearly VERY Muse influenced. One of the songs on their EP (Millions Screaming) is their little epic, the end of which is more than reminiscent of the final part of Citizen Erased.

The dude who played keys on my CD (he's a great friend) is a Canadian. He's a daggy nerd and I love him a lot!
You may also want to get "Schizophonic" - Nuno Bettencourt. Yeah, I know... but truly, trust me! It ain't no Extreme album. Check it out!

I agree with the thing about Fear Of Music, but they are truly amazing, not as good as muse tho! lol! For anyone who hasnt heard of them BUY their Ep it is soooo good, these guys truly desrve fame! the guys in it are only 16-19 yrs of age, so what talent they have for that age is sooooo cool! its a must buy, and millions screaming is a must listen for ALL muse fans!!!!!

And Jeff Buckley.....one word.................legend! A legend that may be in his resting place but will never die in our hearts :'(

I love Muse and know a bit of DreamTheatre, and I must confess I don't see the similarity there... In melodic experimentation and lyrics they differ alot... MEW has been reffered before and I would like to reinforce their work. Although they have different melodic styles, you will find that soft, decaying, enchanted tone in them too (a characteristic for me in some of Muse's "slow" music).

3 Band muse seems to be most similar too are these:

(you may not like all three, but each remind me of muse for a different reason)

Radiohead: for the simply fact that Matt and the singer of Radiohead sound so alike (no really, they do, no buts, it's a fact) but the music is different, Give Radiohead a listen, they dont have as many uplifting anthems as muse do, but they have alot of deep stuff (everyone knows fade out and freak) and the've been around for eons, so you got yourslef alot of albums to collect if you find you like them.

The Mars volta: because of the level of technical ability (aka sheer talent) they have, The mars volta are like a 5 piece Muse, but again, dont expect any uplifting anthems, there brillient lyrics tell tales of murder, drug addiction & other nasty little occurances, brillient band though, they've been around for aprx 2 years, and just this year released the absolutly amazing "Frances the mute" album (I can't recommend it enough).
the producer of which is said to be doing muse's next album

Thw white stripes: yeah I know there not exactly jimi Hendrix guitaring & Joey Jordison drumming, but they are the only other band besides muse, that I get a nice warm feeling from listening too(including mars volta and radiohead), Jack's singing and song structuring is top notch, stay away from the singles released (blue orchid, 7 nation army etc) there best songs are hidden away on their albums

oh and like muse all three groups give absolutly amazing live shows

I reckon it's class, maybe a tad over done yes, but it's just so damn interesting, i just found the decoder single (called "frances the mute", not actually on the album) after searching the 4 corners of the earth for it, and I still have 100 hundred questions to ask about the story of the album

this was a funny review
made me listen to that band

Vatican DC - Fountainhead
Artist: Vatican DC

Rating:

Let's play a game, kids. Let's imagine that Matt Bellamy has ended his intimate relationship with his guitar, and Tom Meighan's with himself. Let's ponder on what would happen if these, the frontmen of Muse and Kasabian respectively, got together. Let's picture their lovechild. While its looks remain a horrible mystery, you can bet that this amazing creation would sound a whole lot like Vatican DC.

'Fountainhead' is, in many respects, like 'Empire''s little brother. The stomping, ready-for-battle rhythms are there, as are the swaggering vocals from singer Steve Harris - the only difference being that of the tone sounding more Irish than Mancunian. Echoing piano parts and thrashing guitars, however, give a nod to daddy Bellamy.

It's safe to say that 'Fountainhead' is nothing new then - in fact, that futuristic-sounding loop sounds suspiciously like the Doctor Who theme. Matt Bellamy, Tom Meighan and David Tennant? Pretty impressive family you've got there, Vatican DC. It's a shame you're so keen to follow in their exact footsteps.

'Fountainhead' is released as a single through Red Flag on 7th May 2007.

They were easily one of my favourite bands of all time and if you like the melodic end of Muse i guarentee you'll love them.

There will be an album from them soon and I really recommend to anyone reading this to listen, and if you like buy it. All four of their EP's sold out almost instantly so i'd pre book one as soon as there's more info!

...Early Queen.
And now some Musey songs:
The Subways-With You:The chorus is a bit like Plug In Baby
The Vines-Evil Town (don´t ask me why.Craig loves Muse,indeed.)
Some Morricone stuff (if you love KoC,that´s it)
The Ones Who Inspired The Inspiration:
Rage Against the Machine
Primus
Tom Waits
Rachmaninov
Smashing Pumpkins
System Of A Down
Deftones
...and the other bands mentioned.

yh they sound good, except i cant stand these bands that sing with a distinct english accent (arctic monkeys, the feeling etc) and theres a faint hint at that in the vocals imo.
good band tho.

if you ask me i would say that muse are pretty damn unique, obviously there are influences like rage, and tom waits etc. but its all extrememly original, especially songs like space dementia, bliss, KoC etc. u should know the ones:D

no, just a 'joke' because the band i was in at the time got a fair amount of comparison to muse, though we didn't really sound like muse, doing our own thing, psychedelia/dance/grunge/ratm mixture. :)

we split up and formed a new band which i'm not even going to try and describe.

The band White Lies kinda remind me of Muse. They use a lot of strings and keyboardy stuff, the best comparison I can think of is Resistance, but a lot better  Also maybe comparable to songs like Map of the Problematique or Take a Bow. They also have a lot of emphasis on strong basslines like Muse (one of their songs 'To Lose My Life' basically has the Starlight bassline. The song is great though!)
If you want to listen to them I recommend their first album 'To Lose My Life...' because it's an amazing debut!

Anyone else also think Matt sounded a bit like Serj Tankian in a couple of instances in the Resistance? They used to have a more rockier song called Carnage up on YouTube, but since they've officially debuted with their own single their old youtube account was closed. That was pretty Musey. I have the song with me though. :p

ME, an australian band from Melbourne. They have been compared to Muse, Radiohead and Queen quite a lot. They seem to have 'incorporated' a few Muse riffs into some of their songs but in general I think they try to be a more extravagant version of Radiohead than Muse.

I can't really hear radiohead in their album :erm: more like Muse but full bombast (and very ridiculous vocals)

Have you listened to their song called "Their Song"? It's Creep. And there are other parts of other songs that sound a lot like Radiohead, especially the ballad-esque part of Like A Fox.

Yep, I agree on the part of Their Song. Like A Fox is like a mix of Muse and early Radiohead, but for the most part ME sounds more like Muse but with a different style of over-the-topness rather than Radiohead. Of course, just my opinion, I may not hear what you hear.

A bit of an exaggeration but it's definitely quite similar at places.

Hey, I was trying to find bands similar to Muse or bands that I feel are near their skill set. And so I saw your post about the band ME. Thanks so much for sharing because I freaking love them. It's been hard finding bands because my tastes are pretty stubborn. Luckily I have found a few that I really enjoy - A Silent Film, Hurts, and now thanks to you - ME!

I don't know if their name will hinder their popularity, but I really think highly of their music. Anyways...question: any idea what their logo / symbol means? It may just be random artwork , but I'm wondering if it has any significance. I am referring to the one which looks like a pokemon ball :D
Oh and what do you think of the album artwork? I am intrigued by them but it's hard finding much info

Just replied to your pm. :)

I really don't know much about them (mainly due to the lack of practicality in searching a band called "Me"), but I know they chose this name to confuse radio listeners when radio hosts have to introduce the band etc...

They're a good band with an awesome vocalist (jealous :$) but the weak tracks on their debut album just puts me off. I'm only able to listen to the tracks from Even The Odd Ones Out with a custom playlist without some of the tracks.

At the moment, I guess not. :erm: In general though, Muse do have elements that are used as comparison points e.g. the use of falsetto (or head voice or whatever, don't bash me vocal masters :p) being a common one, the classical influences, the use of epic orchestra (not that common I think...?) as well as any sort of guitar riffs that's similar to what Muse have done, etc. But of course, this is probably irrelevant to what you're saying. :chuckle:

Actually I think that should answer his question.

Even being aware that Muse are basically a bashing of many different pre-existing sounds I do think they have something of a style of their own that I don't find very often. It's like something about their ability to take all these different aspects into their music and then crank it up shamelessly to full blast.

Imo Showbiz- Abso and BHAR - T2L have a very own sound.
There are certainly typical Muse melodies and Matt has a distinctive voice.

It's lovely to see that there are still Muse fans in Banter

I just wanted to show that these "eras" have a slightly different sound.:$

I don't agree with the people who say Muse have not an own sound.
There are just different types of Muse songs (Matt or Dom said that T2L sound like 3 different bands)

electronic rock/pop: UD, Madness,Follow Me, MotP, TAB
"slightly" symphonic rock: CoD, Supremacy, Survival, USoE
"Muse rock" (couldn't find a better term): Uprising, US, MKU, Assassin, Animals

Don't want to turn this into a "Muse aren't unique anymore" thread though, so back on topic -
there's a band called Civil Twilight that are sort of Musey + Coldplay-ish. I've not heard their debut album but their second album (Holy Weather) is alright. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tsGpuyxog7E

There's also a French indie band called Stuck In The Sound, but with only a slight hint of similarity.

I did email the band "Me" through their facebook and received an awesome response. I pretty much asked if there was any meaning behind their logo. Like what it stood for. And this is what I got back
ME: - "yeah he's our little man, It means everything and nothing like ME. You are the center of your own universe so in a way you mean everything but on a grander scale you mean nothing. A little man inside of a circle that represents everything.... and nothing, maybe one day he will mean something on a grander scale."

That is such a cool idea and makes me like them even more. I'm still confused about the album artwork, but I'm sure I'll figure it out eventually

I don't agree with the people who say Muse have not an own sound.

Last three albums do not have a sound of their own, just a collection of various pre-existing genres with the only link being Matt's voice.

So the question these days is more "Who do Muse sound like?" rather than "Who sounds like Muse?"

Stuff I heard from the last album, can barely remember it now, one song was 80's Prince/Bowie, another was awful rock with OTT orchestra, another was bad electronic pop and another was generic mainstream Dubstep. Whereas OOS & Absolution, nothing else quite sounded like that at the time.

Origin and Abso are quite different from Showbiz. Not sure why those should be all clumped together.

Certain songs on Showbiz: Sunburn, Showbiz, maybe Muscle Museum

You say the songs from BHAR-T2L does not sound like Muse in any way? I'd say this era just has a set of different influences compared to OoS-Abso.

It's not that bad. This formula works in favor of Muse in a lot of songs. For example UD, USoE, SMBH,even Madness and Panic Station (which has a Muse-y solo). They all take from pre-existing genres /sounds, but still sound Muse-y (to me at least).

Like A Fox is like a mix of Muse and early Radiohead, but for the most part ME sounds more like Muse but with a different style of over-the-topness rather than Radiohead.

ME has more in common with Queen than with Muse imo. (There is certainly a bit of Muse in their sound, but aesthetically it's more Queen.)
