The Vines.
Great band, releasing "Winning Days" in a few weeks time, which should be good with songs like "Ride" and "Fuck The World" on.
Oh and Craig Nicholls (the singer/guitarist/mental one) loves Muse and Radiohead.

No, theyre not really groundbreaking, but they do sound very good. Sometimes I'm in the mood for groundbreaking experimental stuff, but sometimes I just can't be bothered and just want to listen to something kinda like this. :p

I don't like their music. It's too much like a random noise. I guess Matt Bellamy doesn't like their music that much as well, but he was very kind and didn't said it straight when NME asked him :p

some of the vines live show are completely awful, craig nicholas is normally out of his head or whatever, he cant really play his guitar part and just screams incoherantly sometimes. Did anyone ever see the jools holland performance where craig trashed his guitar and the drum kit during THE FIRST SONG, they still had to play another two songs later on in the show! the rest of the band just looked pissed off. when the vines are on the ball though, they are fantastic live.

I think their performances are too schizo for me to be a big fan. I like their stuff. And I keep hearing of how great their performances are. But when i saw them... it was really bad. I just wanted to leave. Maybe i'll see them again soon but not on their current tour.

They were spot on when I saw them two years ago. More than compelling enough to convince me to see them in three weeks for sure. I do agree that their antics are very polar, which is difficult to like all the time. I'm hoping that with this album they've mastered dynamics without losing that very intriguing rawness.

Their new album is amazing, btw.
TV Pro is soooo good! And obviously, Fuck the World is awesome. The whole disc rules. Definitely worth buying when it comes out.
I love the Vines, and really hope they do another tour of the UK soon. I saw them last time in Newcastle, and I enjoyed it, but it was a bit... I dunno... Craig was fucked.

they have no problems in the live music department, it's just Craig's antics could get irritating quite quickly i'd imagine, he can sing well and he should show it live more often

I agree; TV Pro is a brilliant song. It's come a long way from the "TV Whore" demo I've got from two years ago.
I saw them in Boston Friday night: amazing! Jet was great too; they're definitely a live band. The Vines were the stars though. Not quite as outright insane as last time, but it's still there (unlike the drumset was before the encore).
Anyway, setlists:
Jet:
Cold-Hearted Bitch
Last Chance
Open the Door
Rollover DJ
Look What You've Done
Are You Gonna Be My Girl?
Get What You Need
Get Me Outta Here
Take It or Leave It
The Way You Do
The Vines:
Outtathaway!
Amnesia
Ride
She's Got Something to Say to Me
Evil Town
Autumn Shade II
TV Pro
Winning Days
Highly Evolved
Animal Machine
---------------
Mary Jane
Get Free

I'm caught in 2 minds about the vines, I think they're alright and I do really like ride and get free but I absolutly can't stand craig and what he stands for. Having read random interviews and seen tv interviews Craig thinks he's above everyone and thinks that people who go to see bands and whorship their idols are stupid and pathetic, he harshly abused edith on the rock and roll kings programme on channel 4 when she asked if he was here to see anyone else saying he wasin't pathetic like her and didn't need to see other people. He says that the future of music is just recorded. Me being a massive live music fan and supporter I find his attitude a load of crap and pathetic and completly discounting his fans and influences. Sorry for gettin so heavy! I just adore live music and can't stand seeing it so harshly dissmissed.
Plus the only reason they tour is because the record company makes them do it.

Craig Nicholls is a twat. He says that music is all about being recorded. What a load of bull. I know a lot of people like him but surely they can see he's got it all wrong. The rock industry is all about live performances and it's naive to think otherwise.
Think their music is ok tho.

Correct about Craig being wrong about live music. But at the Manchester gig he was a very nice sweet and kind person so i can forgive him (he dont act twat-like-ish when hes alone) and they played a WONDERFUL gig, he didnt mess around and got every guitar part correct and it was immense. A truely wonderful gig with no hickups.
Heres the setlist for anyone going to other gigs this tour -
Outtathaway
Amnesia
Ride
Winning Days
Evil Town
Autumn Shade 2
She To Me
Highly Evolved
Sunchild
Animal Machine
Mary Jane
Ain't No Room (amazing, crowd singing first few line and then craig joining in)

what did you guys talk about?
Oh, and I decided to bump this thread back up because I'm a huge Vines fan :) If it weren't for Craig's constant Muse promotion (he always talks about how much he likes them and he wears his own homemade Muse shirt often too) I would've probably never have known who they were. Well, until recently now that they're being played on American radio. Anyway.
And about Craig's being an asshole or whatever. He's only like that to journalists. He just gets fed up with all the questions they ask him I guess. He doesn't do interviews anymore. I've met him a few times and he's a really sweet, softspoken guy. Anyway, The Vines make me happy and I'm way too obsessed. But I do agree that live performance is essential to rock. He prefers to stay couped up in the studio and that's just his opinion. He's more an artist than a performer, that's why. You can experiment more in the studio and make art that stays for years. You can't quite do that live.
Well that's my rant for the day.

i'm also really in love with the vines' music. it's rather great!
i didn't know the stuff about the vines promoting muse... and it's not the reason i know each of them. i knew the vines ages before i knew muse ^.^
that stuff with the interviews is so true! i just once saw an interview with craig and the interviewer asked him about cd promoting and commercial stuff and he told her a lot of very intelligent things.. but they broke the interview off earlier than it should have ended because craig told the interviewer that he is just not interested in the stuff she's asking him and that he isn't fond of interviews... he also said people should listen to his music because they like the sound and they shouldn't ask what the lyrics are about.. ^.^
i think he's quite cool.
but it's a pity that he doesn't give interviews anymore because i think that the things he says are very intelligent!

Not liking being interviewed is fair enough but being extremly nasty to journalists or presenters and putting them down is not and theres no excuse for the time he kicked a woman in the head (photographer I think) while on stage.
amityrae
05-07-2004, 06:37 PM
Yeah, the Vines :)
I saw them from side of stage at the BDO in Perth last year and they were really bloody good (I was amazed). I was with Brady drums, so we got to bring the car to the back as we had stock. I was sitting in the car and Craig walked past, staggering and looking very lost and drunk. Probably the Smirnoff and cranberry I saw in their trailer.
I hope he tries to tone it down, otherwise there may be an alcohol related ending in the works. And that would really suck. :'(

I agree that the interviewers shouldn't be treated so poorly, but its his choice whatever. And about that whole photographer/kicking incident. There is a lot of controversy about it, but there are two sides of the story. He DID write an apology letter to her. He didn't kick her in the head, just the camera. But people in the audience have said that it was blown way out of proportion (oh what a surprise) and that he didn't even kick that hard, and that she was getting way too close and up in his way with the camera. He could've dealt with the situation better but he's been really exhausted lately and that's just the way he knows how to deal with things when he gets pushed too much and is frustrated. And the audience was really rude which also made him angry. there were some people talking and making fun of him during one of the slower tunes and he told them that if they wanted to talk to go outside and stuff. and they were just overall rude, so it pissed him off.

Anyone else like em?
Obviously, as "Get Free" as their runaway single, their first album, "Highly Evolved" was a grand stapletogether of likable songs. From the calm "Country Yard" to the wild "Outtathaway," the mood swings between each song has been like a lifestyle to the Vines.
Some can attribute that to their wild lead singer, Craig Nicholas, an awesome pothead with severe autism. Though he may have chased away the bands' former drummer and bassist, most of their songs are credited to his "vast and empty-except from drugs" mind, making him the centerpiece to "The Vines."
Their second album, "Winning Days," served up fresh new songs with the ol' Vines flavor, including party crashing "Ride," and mentally refreshing opposites like "Autumn Shade II" and "Sun child," and the notorious "Fuck the World," the driving force in making a seperate cd without the "PA" label and mysteriously, one less track. Some compare "FTW" with "Get Free," but I think the latter and is better, a tune that will guarantee no sleep if you heard prior to anything relaxing. "FTW" is on the other hand a bass-happy feel-good sincerely "fuck-the-world" kind of song, in the best sense of the word.
It is reported that they went into the recording studio in late may, so perhaps there may be a new album coming out! Great news for diehard Vines enthusiasts! Unfortunately, the recent slipping away of bassist something-Matthews may delay the releasing in the same way the record label battle with LP is holding up theirs... Vines fans can only hope the next installment to be soon and righteous, but only time and a little insomnia can tell. :)

for those of u who didnt know the vines are playing gigs in Australia and the UK. This is tops since they haven't played any proper gigs to the general public since 2004 due to Craigs syndrome and the band dealing with that in a proper way so he doesn't have another melt down.
I got invited to a secret show be4 these gigs were released for friends and family of the band in Sydney Aust. However I couldn't go cos it was over 18s :( thats the same with the Aussie gigs in Melbourne and Sydney which btw sold out in record time
The UK gigs are: The Vines gear up for exclusive UK Dates. Reading & Leeds Festivals, Nottingham and London Forum shows.
The Vines are confirmed for the Reading NME/Radio1 stage on Friday 25th August and Leeds on the Saturday 26th.
Thursday, August 24th - Rescue Rooms, Nottingham*
Friday, August 25th - Reading Festival (sold out)
Saturday, August 26th - Leeds Festival (sold out)
Tuesday, August 29th - Forum, London*
Other recent performances which were relatively hush hush include their secret gig at Splendour in the Grass (Aussie music festival) and the channel V performance which was only performed in front of the V crew. That went to air however and was great.
All shows have recieved highly positive reviews! I saw the channel V one and heard all about the secret one from my friend who went and they sound like they are doin really well. There is also a new bass player called Brad Heald who is a friend of Ryan's (guitarist).
That's the news if anyone was interested :D

Funny thing, I owe my whole Muse fandom to The Vines. Back when their first album came out, I was a bit younger and more of a fangirl and Craig Nicholls was "the hottest thing since burnt toast" for me and I did the normal fangirlish research on him and shit...and found out he liked Muse...and I was all "Who is this 'Muse' he speaks of?" and I downloaded, fell in love, bought the records (Showbiz and OoS were all that were out at the time) and the rest is history.

hey that's very much like me. I bought the vines album becos it was cheap (I bought the casette version) and I liked the single that was out at the time. Their music really touched me. It was very different to what I had listened to be4. I used to listen to rap and rnb and all that crap and as ashamed I am of it Eminem and Linkin Park used to be my idols.
The Vines came along and I was then introduced to MUSE, RADIOHEAD, SUPERGRASS, ROCKET SCIENCE and heaps heaps more. I was also introduced to the mentality of Salvidor Dali as he is one Craig Nicholls fav artists and I read the book about Salvidor that Craig read lol
The Vines lead to me going from rap, rnb etc to alternative, indie, rock etc

I am loving Don't Listen To The Radio. I completely forgot about them and the fact they had great pop-grunge tunes. Downloaded Vision Valley because of it.

Vision Valley is dreadful in comparison with the first two tbh, regardless of the problems they've had.

just heard a few of their songs...not bad at all.
is it a good or bad thing that people compare them to Nirvana?

Highly Evolved. No contest. Though I don't think Winning Days isas bad an album as most as the "critics" do. Vision Valley is meh, ok.

Iv been a longtime Vines fan, before Highly Evolved came out. And I must say I was very dissapointed with Vision Valley. Winning Days was great, Im guessing since the bassist quit they lost someone with good opinon. Now they are just some not good powerchord another nirvana wannabe band. Dont get me wrong I like some stuff on Vision Valley but overall its like a 5 outta 10

Highly Evolved - 9/10
Winning Days - 7/10
Vision Valley - 5/10
WD and VV are still worth it for some great songs.

The Vines are brilliant, the sort of Ballsy Rock band we seemingly cannot produce in this country anymore and havent since the mid 90's! Great band and I certaintly look forward to Melodia being released.

I have Highly Evolved and like it pretty well. It's a bit too screamy in parts, though. Because of that I can't say I LOVE it.
