OK, so I thought I'd start one cos 10 years ago tonight Kurt Cobain killed himself.
What do people have to say about Nirvana?
I'm too young to remember them but I love all their music.

Hmm, I'm a bit too young too, but what I've heard doesn't really overly impress me. Sure, there's classic tunes like Smells Like Teen Spirit and Heart Shaped Box but not a lot of the rest of it really stands out for me...
Not something I'd choose to listen to, but I wouldn't mind if somebody played their stuff to me.
If that makes any sense.

Yeah I agree.
Like you say, some of the songs really stand out, but others seem to get left behind. I've got the greatest hits, it's full of good songs, but many of them aren't blow-away-able. Still love them though.

I have never liked Nirvana but there's no doubting that they did a lot for rock music and are legendary.

I think some of their songs are very catchy, like Lithium, Come As You Are, etc.
But some of it just bores me.

I remember hearing nevermind before it exploded and thinking it was pretty damn average 6 months later it was fucking everywhere (like the darkness now) I still don’t rate there music, but it changed the course of music for a while, dirty gats were then considered cool if nothing else that was there contribution to the planet a few cheesy (I was listening to industrial and death metal at the time so before you shoot me that is what I had compare it to) rock songs and a warning that heroin is not such a good life choice.

I don't think you can deny the importance or musicality of Nirvana. They created 3 great albums and were a major factor in both the Grunge explosion and pop culture. When many people think of Nirvana they automatically think of Nevermind, but I think that In Utero is their magnum opus. Serve the Servants, Rape Me, Milk It and Radio Friendly Unit Shifter are all top songs.

Yes, i love Nirvana they were my favourite band for a long long time. Kurt Cobain influenced me to pick up the guitar. Nirvana also opened me up to a lot of other music. Before Nirvana i was listening to horseshit like Blink 180.
Also to you Nirvana fans who care here is a link to an exclusive release of a Nirvana jam from the 12-29-93 show. It has no name obviously, it was released as a 10th Anniversary present to Nirvana fans by Mike Ziegler who was Kurt's friend and Nirvana roadie.
It's a rather scary song the lyrics include 'Remember the fighting, can't stop the fighting' and a lot of Cobain-esque screaming. It reminds me of Endless, Nameless (secret Nevermind track) and Tourettes (In Utero). Maybe a moderator here would like to pass it on to Monsieur Bellamy as i guess he'd like to hear it. If you can't live with this track not having a name then i'll name it.......'Fighting'?
Without further ado:
Just Surfaced Nirvana Jam of 12-29-93 (http://home.comcast.net/~mikeziegler/kurtcobains_10th.wmv)

I love nirvana. They really got me into rock music and inspired me to pick up a guitar. Kurt was an amazing songwriter.

Nirvana got me into rock, I'll not bite the hand that fed me.
As for the whole was-Kurt-murdered thing- I'd rather not glorify either of them, Courtney to murderess and Kurt to victim. He would have snuffed it either way with the amount of heroin he'd just taken, and anyway... It's not like you can bring him back by blackening Courtney's name. She's managing that just fine by herself.

Oh fuck here we go again KURT the new ELVIS he’s dead there is fuck all anyone can do about it speculation on what may of happened doesn’t help you were not there and don’t fucking know what happened, some twat writes a book looking for dodge shit he will find it!
In the words of john togood "heroine is bad for you guns are worse"
let him fucking rest if anything he did it to get away from the fans he took the piss out of on in utero, the whole rock star bit did not sit well with him, if anything you killed him, you gave him money that brought guns and heroine to a fragile man who did not have the resources to deal with the life you gave him think about it the next time you find the new messiah.
RIP KURT

no-one is disputing the fact that hes dead. i dont know anyone who is saying that hes still alive so hes not the new elvis at all...
speculation on what may have happened is harmless. its just a conversaton and doesnt hurt anyone...
you cant blame the fact that he killed himself on his fans. its like the whole fate thing. if he didnt pick up a guitar he wouldnt have been in the band. if he... and so on.. Why dont you just blame everyone he ever met?

And they have the funone http://www.nirvana2.com/smilies/funone.gif the best smilie ever. RH even took it away as a prank a few months back and there was outcry  We've just had the elections which were as stupid as ever, and the nfc sims experiment was..... interesting.

i was 12/13 when the whole grunge thing kiked off.... all you ppl who slag off their music are really missing the point in most cases.... Nirvana were a lyric based band... many interviews kurt said that lyrics come first the instruments come second.... if you actually LISTEN to whats being said in the songs you may have a different perspective oin things... Nirvana made the guitar accessable again.... poodle rock massive solos ruled the guitar world b4 grunge..kids were scared of learning the guitar.. the simplicity in nirvanas music really inspired me and others to learn to play.. just remember.. with out nirvana muse just wouldnt be the same. kurt was a genius in my book ... opinions of the guy have dwindled in the past 10 years and ppl have jumped on the old if it is / was popular at any point.... obviously it cant be cool bandwagon. The music nirvana helped me through my teenage years alot.... when i was gettin bullied at school ( id love to see em try now the fuckers) i knew whatever hell i was put through nirvana would be there at the end of the day and nothing else would matter....i dont listen to them as much nowadays coz you just gotta move on .... but i will always apreaciate the work they did and will always be greatfull of nirvanas influence on me and the way music was shaped.... there will always be a place in my heart for them... enough of my babbling ...... hmmmmm what now...... food methinx!

Agree on Oasis. You're as wrong as you can be about Nirvana...

Yeah :) I had the mp3 recording, so it was cool to see them actually doing it. I didn't realise before I saw that that they had all swapped instruments. Shows what I know.
Have you watched the bits of footage when you flick through the scene selection? The teen spirit video outtakes were pretty amusing, and the weird shit with them filming that set up of dolls etc. That bit with the skeleton ended up in the lithium single artwork didn't it?

Yes it did.
Awesome dvd.
Okay, here's the deal.
I worship Muse. I really do. (And I'm not just saying that just because of the fact that this actually is the Muse Messageboard. Believe me I am honest. Way honest.)

But not greater than Nirvana.
Nirvana are.. extremly.. fantastic!

I saw an artbook in MVC with Cobain on the front, took a flip through and it was very funny. Drawn as an angel on the cover with this wings losing feathers and tears gushing from his eyes. That kind of stuff just encourages Nirvana fans to portray him as some tortured genius instead of a silly little smackhead who could write a decent enough song and had a terrible choice in women.

Fav songs are: The Man Who Sold The World, All Apologies, Heart-Shaped Box, Breed, Rape Me.

I love Nirvana and they were the second band I ever got into so they're sort of an 'old' favourite (although I'm still discovering music really, I'm kinda young)
Anyway yeah they really mean alot to me, especially Heart Shaped Box which used to be my favourite song a few years back and now it's my boyfriend and I's song :)

Yeah the documentaries are facinating. The one I watched was quite frustrating though cause they were showing old footage from thier gigs but they obviously hadnt got permission to use the actual sound so they just played a generic heavy metal instrumental over the top of it arrgh!

I've always liked Nevermind the least, I guess because the direction for the album was a bit more mainstream. The lyrics are ace though, for songs like SLTS that don't have a great instrumental, the lyrics are some of the best. I find that the older Nirvana really showed what they were about, which is why With The Lights Out is just flawless, really shows an inside on what they were about.
As you can tell, I used to (and still am) a huge Nirvana nut, and I'd say that Live At Reading is probably my favorite album. It's also great to read Kurt's journals and check out their influences, such as The Frogs. Well, Nirvana introduced me to The Frogs, and they're definitely one of the best bands I've listened to.
As for Incesticide, I'd rank it higher above Nevermind, but it pales in comparison to Bleach or In Utero. Carries one of my favorite Nirvana songs (Hairspray Queen), and the other songs are enjoyable as well, although it does seem like a bunch of B-sides (which it really was).

Let me elaborate: Whenever someone goes through my iPod or CDs and they see nevermind they just about always go 'OMG PUT SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT ON!!!!!!1111' and it's so annoying because there are heaps of songs on Nevermind that are a shitload better (Breed, Lithium, Something In The Way, Lounge Act).
It's not that I hate the album, it's just when I play it when some/one of my friend(s) are around they instantly go SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT.

^Your friends probably do that because they havent listened to Nirvana in much depth, SLTS is thier biggest hit, so they are gonna know that one first. Its the song that got me into them and made me buy thier greatest hits. I now recognise there are many greater songs than SLTS. So I dont think its such a bad thing :)

It was nothing short of fucking amazing. Nevermind was released on the day I saw them at Axis. SLTS had been released earlier as a single, but Nirvana was NOT the sensation they were to become literally a couple of months from the shows I saw. (I saw them 2 days in a row at the same venue in Boston).
It's so strange and incredible because someone audio recorded the entire set at that show too, which is also on youtube. :)
Nobody really knew what was about to happen, you know? I had the pleasure of meeting Dave Grohl, who is as authentically nice and down to earth as he appears to be "on TV"'. He's an awesome human being who deserves every ounce of success he has had post-Nirvana.

Didn't you say you've seen Arcade Fire in smaller venues? :awesome: I love AF so much that, I don't know if I'd go see them live at this point because I'd be too far from the stage. :(
When I lived in Boston, I was surrounded by music and musicians, so going to shows was a weekly, if not daily thing. Believe me, I saw MANY bands that never succeeded in getting signed, or that tanked on indie labels. It's a very brutal industry, and it's always the artist that gets "hurt". I saw a whole heckuva lot of bitterness and anger from musicians who ultimately never became "famous" on the scale everyone dreams of.
Nirvana's "success story" was bizarre from the beginning. I distinctly remember telling non 'music scene' coworkers that it was extremely unusual to have a band like Nirvana played on commercial radio stations. SLTS was quite abrasive to be "comm radio friendly" at the time. Nirvana was in the right place at the right time, creating the perfect storm. Unfortunately, it was too much for KC. :(

You know one of the reasons I stay in this area is cause the music scene is good. A lot of bands have come from the area and being in between 2 big cities means I never have to travel far to see a big band when they stop by.

No, seriously -- I know exactly what you mean. It's even worse if you're female! I went to lots of shows alone, and yes -- before the music starts it's indeed awkward. Especially since there's lots of pretentious jack-asses in the music scene. But there's also lots of very nice people too. :) At least nowadays we can sit at the bar and surf on our iPhones, so we're at least DOING something instead of awkwardly staring at the wall, or our drink.

I <3 my iPhone. :D I went to that Jimmy Gnecco show alone, and texted my friends while there. :)

I went to a show to see the support and was on the board throughout the headline act. They were so dull I left early.

There are gigs every single night, and lots of them in the part of London I live in. But they're often on nights where I just can't get childcare etc. Plus I don't have the money to go to as many as I'd like. But yeah, any decent band will play in London as part of a tour. But London is so big, if a band play in north London (I'm in the SW) it can take me 1.5 hours each way travelling, sometimes 2 hours.

I know this only too well, my friend goes to Uni in Kingston and keeps asking me to go to gigs there with him but I hardly ever go because I can't be bothered with the 2 1/2 hour bus ride back to Beckton.

I only need to take two buses, I just change at Trafalgar square, it just takes so long though, each bus takes just over an hour and I end up having to wait about half an hour when I change because the night bus towards mine doesn't run often enough. I'm amazed that I see night buses with hardly anyone on them but the one I use to get home is always stupidly overcrowded. /rant
This is stupidly good

That's what puts me off going to a lot of gigs, the crazily long travelling home afterwards.

I kinda got used to it whilst living in Norfolk, always had to rush to get the last train home at half 11, which I have missed on more than 1 occasion, but even that only took an hour and a half. Once I moved to London I found that any journey over an hour usually wasn't worth it

I wish I knew what the music scene was like where I live. :$ It has been many years since I was a "scenester". When I was, I lived in Boston, MA, which is amazing as far as seeing indie/alt bands go because it's a massive college town. No sane touring band would NOT play Boston. I'm 1.5 hours from Philadelphia, PA and NYC, so I certainly have access to a great scene, but I really don't have the time or energy anymore. :( And 1.5 hours is a big time commitment to go see a band. I didn't get home until 2:30AM when I went to see Jimmy Gnecco, and my body was messed up for days afterwards. I'm a pathetic wuss, I guess. Party stamina diminishes greatly with age!
I had no idea that London is so HUGE! Boston is actually SMALL if you can believe it! Many of the clubs/bars I used to go to are gone now. :( I was recently reminiscing with a friend about how so many cool venues don't exist anymore. :( I've gone into Philly twice now, and I can tell it is significantly bigger than Boston. It's intimidating somewhat. What I wouldn't do to be 21 again.

Yeah, London's enormous, geographically, and had a population of close to 7 million. I'm only 30 minutes from central London on the train but going from one side to the other usually involves lots of different forms of public transport and it can take forever. When Jimmy was last over here I went to the first two gigs but the third would have meant travelling two hours each way for a 30-minute set, and he was on early (difficult when you have children) so I didn't bother.
I think I go to a fairly decent amount of gigs. More than anyone else I know who's my age. Some of my friends never go to gigs, others it will be a once a year event. I'm averaging one a month at the moment, sometimes two, so I reckon I'm doing fairly well.

Are you kidding me? You're a total scenster at 1 or 2 a month! :D -- Especially since you have 2 young boys!

Maybe. There's a lot more I'd like to go to but I just can't. I have my mum, who lives 10 minutes' drive from where I am but I don't like to keep asking her to look after the boys while I go and see bands.

I hear ya. :) One of the reasons that I don't go out much at all is because I really have no one I trust to watch the kids. My family lives 6 hours away, and my SO's family lives on the other side of the country -- like 3 DAYS away driving. That's why the couple of times I have gone out it has been alone.
I can say with truthfulness that, while I love music more than anything in the world, I'm okay not going to see bands all the time now. I'm not sure why. Maybe I'm still jaded to a certain extent having seen the brutality of the business side of the industry? Dunno. I do admit that my attitude could indeed change in the future, as I think "time off" has given me a refreshed perspective on things. And in all sincerity, the internet has changed the game completely. :D

Exactly. We can keep up with what's going on in music via our internet friends. And I do value the friends I've made on this board immensely because we're all music addicts and i wouldn't have found that among my rl friends. This board is partly what's reignited my passion for music. Muse was the other factor. But whatever, I'm happy because I'm back where I belong, among people who are passionate about music and I didn't have that for so many years.

Wow. Agree 100%! This board has introduced me to music that I would have never found on my own! And music addicts of "the younger generation" have inspired me to go back and re-listen to so much music from the 90's that I obviously took for granted back in the day. I'm truly impressed with some of the "kids" on this board. I have 100% faith that they will carry the torch of passion for unique, inspirational music to future generations. :D There are some amazing, creative minds hanging out on the boards who can subsequently FIND each other because of this technology we have now. And the access to music of ALL genres and stripes is mind-blowing. :)

Yep. We're so on the same page, to use a horrible expression. But it's true. My other big, big influence has been radio. I found a fantastic radio station called XFM which I have on all day, pretty much, and I've discovered all the best up and coming music through them. They play rock and indie and none of the shit that ends up dominating the charts.
Most of the newer bands I love, such as the Vaccines, Maccabees, Horrors etc have come from listening to that radio station.
Then there's Simon (Sippe), who knows my taste inside out and will make me playlists of stuff he knows I'll like. That's how I discovered Jimmy Gnecco/Ours and Pain of Salvation who are some of my most-listened-to artists atm. Can I make some recommendations for you?

What are your priorities? Vocals? Riffs? My priority is vocals, which is why I love Matt Bellamy and Jimmy Gnecco so goddamn much.

Explaining what I "like" is difficult because I basically like anything that is good. What's good? Creativity, originality, and authenticity. I have the world's most sensitive 'bullshit meter' when it comes to "phonies".
Matt & Jimmy are about as "real" as it gets. :D Both of them can get pretty goddam naked with their art.
