Last night I attended my first ever David Bowie performance.

I have been a fan of David Bowie for as long as I can remember. Dancing and singing (okay, trying to sing) along to Chant of the Ever Circling Skeletal Family in my grandparent's basement in their little bungalow in Willowdale (a suburb in Toronto's north-end).

Twenty something years later, I got to see my favourite artist with nothing in between me and him but air and some of that smoke machine gas.

Was it all that I had expected? Frankly, I did not expect very much. Some may call me a pessimest (and those who do have every right). But I was expecting to see an artist who was 57 years old play a bunch of songs that made him popular many years ago and play them without the gusto that made those songs popular. And weave in some new songs that lack the gusto altogether of their older breathren. I did not get what I had expected. I got a performance of reworked classics that still work interwoven with newer songs that find their way to hold their own up next to the classics.

I'm Afraid of Americans never sounded good to me, until last night. That is one song that needs to be played live to get the respect from me the studio versions failed to get. Cactus and New Killer Star never shone so bright as they did on a damp April evening. Looking for Water had me singing all the way up the Yonge line subway (that looked and felt its 50 years last night) unlike Mr. Bowie who certainly disproved my fears that he (dare I say it) was past his prime.

All things considered, it was a wonderful show and an experience I will never forget. To those who have yet to see a David Bowie show, (I'm pretty sure, that I was the last one, but I'll say it anyways,) last night was a stellar performance by a stellar artist backed by (contrary to the opinions of the gentlemen who escorted me to the show) a stellar band.

Bowie is the coolest human being alive...bar none!, October 18, 2004

This DVD is brilliant from start to finish! This DVD shows why David is truly the greatest, most influential musician that has ever walked the face of the planet! Sorry Elvis! When the lights shown down upon a previously invisible David Bowie during the opening number "Rebel Rebel," the crowd erupted in celebrated excitement. There was a sudden concurrent awareness that a living legend had made his presence in that same room. And on this particular evening, no matter how famous The Point happens to be, when Bowie hit the stage, the once intimidating venue was dwarfed by his karma, history and presence

Concerts by classic-rock powerhouses (true heritage/dinosaur acts) such as the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Billy Joel and Elton John just can't match the feeling of a David Bowie concert.The cult-inspiring Bowie is the ultimate rock star, with a life and career that has included a supermodel wife, bisexuality, drugs, colorful costumes and ever-changing stage personas, and he offers an evening that's a true event. Other classic rockers tour routinely, which can dull the impact, but Bowie's latest trek is his first in eight years, giving it must-see status. This amazing DVD will show why he is the only one of the so-called classic rockstars that has remained vital, youthful and truly relevant.
Bowie's 2 1/2-hour show joyfully showcased what a vital live performer he remains. At the age of 57, he's still the coolest person in any room, full of cocksure English swagger.Sometimes fans just have to stare at a musician and wonder to themselves "How do they do it?"

It's hard even for musicians to explain where their inspiration comes from. At times it seems as much a mystery to them as it is to the rest of us.
Making the stage his weapon of choice, nobody aside from maybe Mick Jagger or the late Freddie Mercury could ever equal Bowie's stage presence. He defiantly prances, walks, struts and makes the entire elevated platform an instrument upon itself. The 57 year-old, ( still 56 at this show) not looking a day older than 40, still makes the most of his time under the lights, as if he's getting paid by the minute. Whether squatting to sing in the corner, receiving a bouquet of flowers, waving to star-struck fans, or marching and singing on a raised platform that would make most people woozy, Bowie let it be known that he is a star.

Bowie was, in a word, amazing. If there was a concert to catch these last five years, this was one of them. Bowie seldom tours, and at 57, it's not too likely that he'll embark on another world tour any time soon, if ever again.
Classy guy that he is, he doesn't parody his former self, nor does he try in vain to remain forever young, even though he looks it. He hasn't been pumping iron or doing strenuous amounts of yoga, like Sting. He doesn't rely on the same stage schtick that he used 40 years ago, like Mick Jagger. Bowie has settled into a dignified mantle as an English rock-gent who'll don black jeans, runners and T-shirts, but only if he gets to do something a tad outlandish, such as throw on a tattered morning coat over top. And then there was that bit of red fabric dangling around his neck, posing as an ascot.

The ever-smiling Bowie was in top form, his leonine voice more powerful than ever before (even in comparison to the recordings), and he delivered old hits with unabashed glee - songs that will forever hold up in the rock canon, such as Rebel Rebel, All the Young Dudes, The Man Who Sold the World, Under Pressure, Life on Mars,Ashes to Ashes, Heroes,Suffragette City and, as the grand finale, Ziggy Stardust. It's when hearing those hits, that one realizes what a true contribution this man has made to rock and roll and popular culture - present and past. Of course, the critical success of his latest Reality album is the impetus for this world tour, and the general belief that Bowie - who put the freak into rock 'n' roll - is back. The new material is absolutely fantastic and truly holds its own next to the old stuff. I personally like it as much as the 70's material. New Killer Star, Never get Old, Loneliest Guy and the beautiful/haunting Bring Me The Disco King at the encore is chilling and gorgeous!

Buy this DVD..buy it for everyone you know...this is the greatest music DVD of this century so far!

If Jemen here gets there before you, what will that say about English peoples' facility with computers? Look - we have THREE Rolltreppen from a Dutchman, Finn and a German, and one VERY poor offering from my husband, only because I warned him I would withdraw all cooking favours if he didn't record it. So... you need to fly the flag for England, Fuzz, and get recording ;)

Bowie!! Very new here, well, I just visited the MBs a couple days ago for the first time and have been pretty busy since, too busy to come back in frequently enough. Apologies for not keeping up. But I can't just pass by a thread of messages on Bowie and not reply. Thanks for the photos of him, btw. Brought back fond memories of this year. I caught him four times this year on his reality tour. Sounds crazy, but it was amazing, the shows were. I meant to see him at T in the Park and Roskilde, but alas.. Actually, saw Muse instead so it all worked out fine in the end (they'd been scheduled to appear at the same time, different stages). I could go on and on.. and will, if anyone equally appreciative of this mangod, DB, ever wants to talk Bowie.. but I can't neglect to mention Iggy.
Iggy and Bowie. There's no comparison. Well, yes, to state the obvious: the two, together with Lou in the unholy trinity, are bookish, music-loving, music-making, dwelt together in Berlin, overcame drug addiction, etc etc etc Personally I favor Bowie, sure, but the two times I saw Iggy (mind you, he was in his fifties both times), he rocked out, with the raw energy of rockers 30 years younger. So I guess what I"m saying is, both are awesome, no need knocking one or the other. As a Bowie fan I can't help but recognize the significance Iggy had on Bowie, in his personal life, but more importantly musically. And vice versa for Iggy: I still think some of his best songs are ones co-written by Bowie, and, as already mentioned, Bowie was there for him while he was combating drug addiction.
Right, going on, here. Aw music.. it'll do that to ya.

Never mind Matt is God. (He's a god, I'm not into mono blah de blah faiths:LOL:)

Bowie is God. End of.

(Or at least he was until 1980, after that it all went Pete Tong and it was a slippery slope via being a gimp in Labyrinth all the way down diminishing returns alley).

But I'll excuse him all of it. Bowie, he da man!

LOL THREAD. You all know of my lifelong love for the dude. Let's not go into that.

Anyway, I was watching some Bauhaus videos on YouTube t'other day and came across the opening scenes of The Hunger. It's a 1983 (?) vampire film. Check it out if you haven't seen it (I think it's like, ALL on YouTube. Haha).

Not safe for work. Or Gemsys - seriously, I can't risk watching it again, I may spontaneously combust. He's a vampire, dude. Bowie. As. A. Vampire. Does stuff get any hotter?! *fans self*)

Shame he gets all old and fugly in it. :(

Sweet Thing/Candidate is one of the best things he ever recorded, I fink. I love his scratchy guitar and sax solos. And the gradual build-up in speed and tempo.

Listened to Scary Monsters earlier. Roberto Fripp's guitar playing is so good. Every time I listen to him I realise how shite I am!

By the way, Iggy Pop's original version of China Girl is better!

And ooh, I didn't realise that was Fripp on Scary Monsters! You learn something new every day. Awesome. (And the original Iggy China Girl is great, but s'not as sexy. :D There's just something about the way he says "I'll ruin everything you aaare..." that makes you wanna say oh PLEASE do)

Yay, Fripp's solos on Teenage Wildlife are so damn good. He also played on "Heroes", and Adrian Belew from King Crimson played on Lodger (he's on the new NIN album! I love it). Everybody seems to play on Bowie's albums.

I have to listen to China Girl now. I love the parallels between The Idiot and Bowie's Berlin-to-Let's Dance stuff. If you listen to Red Money from Lodger, the music is exactly the same as Sister Midnight! I want to do a shite mix of them but I can't be arsed.

Ashes to Ashes hasn't had enough Bowie songs in the soundtrack. If they don't play Fashion at least once in the series I'll cry.

Excellent! Man, I love King Crimson. Court of the Crimson King... We used to play that in my old band. :D That's another one I used to steal all the time but don't actually have my own copy... *goes back to eBay*

Haha, I have to check that out now. :LOL: I can imagine them going, "Ja, we both like that riff, so let's both use it *shrug*. No-one'll notice." And you should do a mix. Yes yes!

I got In The Court of the Crimson King on vinyl a few years ago purely because the cover is ridiculously awesome. I wanted to get my old 'band' to play 21st Century Schizoid Man but they were too lazy/rubbish to learn it. Haven't listened to that album for so long!

I never even noticed the songs were the same until I read it during a wiki-procrastination session. I think I prefer Bowie's version just because of Eno's weirdness. And because he's Bowie and cannot be beaten.

Life on Mars even had other Bowie songs in it. I remember Starman being in the credits for a S2 episode and Changes during a Railway Arms scene (I miss Nelson). Still, it's extremely likely that A2A will have a second series so they've still got time to fix it. Every time I listen to Life On Mars? it makes me want to cry because I cannot help thinking about the scene where Sam jumps off the roof in 2007. I'm really dreading the American remake.

Ha, good old Wiki. I've been finding out loads of interesting stuff on their recently, like I was saying in the NIN thread yesterday! Haha, it's like Music Fact of the Day at the moment.

I kind of hope A2A doesn't have more than one series in a way. Nothing ruins a show more than dragging it out for years... and LoM's two series was perfect. Life On Mars? always made me teary-eyed, it's just one of those choons... sooo pretty. Bloody hard to play though, I've been trying to get the hang of it for years and have never tried to play a song with so many crazy key changes :LOL:

I've seen him live, he's very charismatic, brings a lot of presence. He also put on a great show, the only songs which were poorly done were modern love and rebel rebel. The man who sold the world gave me shivers though....it was perfect. And he broke out quicksand, a song I had never heard until then, but now that I know it I feel quite fortunate he played it.

Hope he tours again so you can see him.
Awww, brilliant. No faaair. I haven't seen him either. It's one of those things where you think, "oh I can't really afford it, I'll catch him some other time" but never get round to it. He's played at a couple of festivals in the last 5 years or so and I sat at home and watched him on telly and cried 'cause I wasn't there. :LOL:

Health & Safety Phil from my old office saw him about 3 times on the Reality tour, but I was too poor and couldn't go... I was SO JEALOUS and Phil knew how much I loved him, so he'd wind me up going "ner ner ner" and then he would come up to my office to tell me all about it afterwards and I would be like, "oh fuck off I hate you, don't talk to me, get out." AND I bumped into an old mate recently from college who said he went to see him on the Reality tour, and he said that he stood there and cried and cried when he started singing. I would too, I know it. I really hope it's not too late!

The tickets weren't even that expensive for the show, which was nice. I think they were $60 Canadian, which at the time was probably somewhere in the neighbourhood of 20 pounds....if I understand the British currency correctly.

The Reality tour was great. The Polyphonic Spree opened for them, which was odd to say the least. People were almost to the point of booing them, they wanted Bowie to come on so bad.

He'll tour again, you know he'll get restless. I am soooo happy that he's guest singing on that Tom Waits tribute album. If Tom Waits and Bowie ever collaborated directly, I would explode out of sheer amazement/happiness. The maids would not be impressed with the mess.

*wikis Reality tour* 2003 - I think that was the year I had to buy my own Reading ticket. And I stupidly went and saw Muse about 30 times. :mad: No wonder I was poor. Polyphonic Spree were everywhere that year... they headlined the smaller stage of Reading and were all over the NME and shit. Where are they now?

*googles*
Monday's child is fair of face;
Tuesday's child is full of grace;
Wednesday's child is full of woe;
Thursday's child has far to go;
Friday's child is loving and giving;
Saturday's child works hard for a living.
But the child that is born on the Sabbath day is fair and wise, good and gay.

*wikis*
The date of Bowie's birthday was January 8, 1947, a Wednesday. As he sings in the song: "Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday born I was Thursday's Child". In a performance for VH1 Storytellers, he revealed that the title of the song was prompted by the memory of the autobiography of actress Eartha Kitt. The book, also called Thursday's Child, used to be a favourite of his when he was 14 years old. A "Rock mix" of the song was also released on the single with heavier sounding drums and more guitar.

:D The internet wins again.

That's precisely what I don't like about best-of records--typically I listen to and get familiar to whole albums and I really miss the sequence if it's not there...although if you already know the stuff well, a best-of is nice to have around (like when driving) and sometimes the sequence of tracks on a best-of, if well chosen, sometimes becomes a favourite record in itself! :D

So you don't like gigs either then because songs aren't played in the same order as on the album.

Sometimes they are! Nice surprise when it happens...

A gig is a different case I think--it's kind of like a live best-of! :p

i own the reality tour dvd (thanks for that smashing review...it was somewhere on here, can't remember who wrote it sorry) YOU HAVE TO SEE IT!!! and the "ziggy stardust and the spiders from mars the motion picture" dvd (awesome!). the "best of" dvd is good for superb vids, but am annoyed with the cd. not enough songs. labyrinth is one of my all-time fave movies and i own the soundtrack :$

so glad my parents kinda raised me on david bowie ha ha. damn i want him to come back to australia like right now!!! i love him so much :happy:

dunno what's up with everyone looking at me weird in music stores though :( when i buy stuff, people over the counter are like "what the hell is a sixteen-year-old doing buying a david bowie cd/and or dvd?" annoying, but i don't care :p so what if i like someone "old"? he sure as hell ain't old to me :)

Mr Gemsy sound-engineered a band the other night who did a cover of Rebel Rebel. Mr Gemsy was all, "Yeah that was cool, but I would've covered Time." :LOL: *imagines*

'Hard to compare to Muse' - no it's not, that's like comparing... I dunno, Bowie, with a bunch of numpties. :LOL:

I don't know, it's annoying me 'cause she looks so familiar... The closest thing I can name is the cover of The Man Who Sold The World (similar hat & frock coat). But that wasn't a persona as such. Aaargh, I know I've seen him in that exact outfit though, damnit. I'm going to have to get searching through photos, aren't I? What a chore... :D

"I'm gonna be surfing the Lake of Fire, rawkin' out."

Been listening to Ziggy again in the van today, much to Mr Gemsy's... annoyance. Well, he's unnerved 'cause he went to work yesterday and someone in the office was listening to Bowie. He was all, "AAARGH I can't escape him!" He also saw the Let's Dance video on E4 yesterday, and Anna had a dream about him the other night. Also when we walked into our local rawk club on Wednesday night Ashes to Ashes 'just happened' to be playing. It's too weird. We came to the conclusion that he must be up to something. :unsure: Boweh voodoo? GIMME MOAR.

Yeah, he's rawkin' up Hell for sure. Awww. *listens again* I'm on a YouTube bender thanks to you!

I LOVE it when you hear an amazing song in the car and have to pull over to listen to it. I have actually perfected a driving dance for those times when you just can't stop. :LOL:

Yeah, so what is going on? I keep hearing things and seeing things about him all over the place... it's mad. Last time I had a practise my bandmate started talking about All The Young Dudes. Can't be a coincidence. Take me for example, I've occasionally listened to his records all my life, sure... but never this much Bo in one go. Ah, I suppose we could blame Ashes to Ashes (the TV show)? Hey, those last two sentences kind of rhyme.

I've also decided - maybe controversially - that Tin Machine were awesome. :LOL:

Late '80s/early '90s, I think. The only Tin Machine I've heard is a re-recording of Look Back in Anger from the Rykodisc reissue of Lodger and it's really good (and twice as long!). I prefer the original but it's a good arrangement despite sounding slightly stadium rockish.

I'm terrible at post-Let's Dance Bowie! The only albums I've heard are Heathen, Earthling and Outside.

I've got some great memories of All The Young Dudes... my dad, sister and I used to try and cover it with little success, me on bass, the two of them on guitars... oh the lolz. And indeed, the driving dance is great, but I do I have lots of room in my van to throw shapes properly! It could be slightly dangerous in a smaller wagon...

Tin Machine were about 1989-1991-ish. The whole thing does reek of mid-life crisis and they are absolutely terrible. Look out for their version of Working Class Hero. :LOL: <3

Most of the post-Let's Dance 80s stuff is :unsure:. Haha. Dodgy stuff. Although I kind of resent the fact that he calls that period his 'Phil Collins years'. He was obviously still WAY cool, because that was when I really noticed him (and I'm also way cool). And I loved all that dancing he did on that late 80s tour... with that bird from the Fame '90 video, and Time Will Crawl (that song really sucks, but the video's awesome.) That was inspirational stuff, that dancing. And I've always had a soft-spot for Loving the Alien. It's a tune!

I've adored everything since Outside to be honest. Especially Earthling. I LOVE that album. No-one was mixing rock & d'n'b back then (apart from maybe the Prodigy) and I heard it around the time I was just getting into proper heavy music and my God it was awesome.
