Jeff Buckley was a genius. He had an amazing voice, brilliant songwriting skills and amazing ability on guitar. I still think of Grace as the best album ever (It's the best I've ever heard anyway!)

hmmm i always tell myself that but i have to wonder sometimes if its the fact that he died without having released huge amounts of material that heightens my admiration for him. i mean it makes me sad to think what other beautiful songs who could have written/performed...
i also think he was an extremely attractive man which adds to the god-like image and tragicness.
pah! hes the best and in conclusion i am going to agree with you :)

True, but Martin Grech does - his voice/ charisma/ versitility/ dynamics are truly stunning - he recently played a Jeff Buckley tribute gig and stole the show (other acts included Ed Harcourt, Jamie Cullum, Mark Greaney....). At his last acoustic gig, Dom Howard and Jeff Buckley's mum were in attendance.
Seriously, if you like Jeff Buckley I cant believe you'll be disappointed!

I like his voice very much but at the same time I'm not sure if his "legend" isn't because he died young? He wasn't that popular when he was alive, in fact not many people heard about him that time.
Of course his influance on many musicians cannot be questioned - just to mention Thom from Radiohead, James from Manics or Matt.

No, I just find his music bland and boring.
Sarah
26-02-2004, 01:44 PM
Hmm.
My sister said that. She was an Eminem fan, big style. Had Dre, Snoop Dogg. You know the kind of thing. "Rock is shit" attitude. Gave her the album. After literally a week she wouldn't listen to anything else.
I think it just needs time. I thought it was boring at first.
He was good, but he wasn't as good as everyone wants to make out. I dont see the point of romanticising things just because someone died. I mean, I like Grace as much as the next person, but if the man was still alive, and hadn't had a famous father, I doubt that more than 10% of you would own it, or care. In fact, I'm pretty confident half of the people who go on about the album have heard more than three songs from it, or just namecheck it because a couple of bands they like have had their vocal style compared to that of Buckley.
Plus theres the fact that sketches (obviously) wasn't finished, and from all accounts he was as likely to murder it as he was turn it into a work of art.
It's just getting all frighteningly chiché now, y'know? Not that I'm saying he's crap, he wasn't AT ALL. It's just easier to feel cynical ever day.

A girl I was seeing in about 1995 was a big fan and she made me listen to him alot. I didn't think he was that good then and I still don't. I gave the album time and listened to it alot and also his post humous stuff when that all came out but I don't like it.
And anyway I've got Dr Dre's first album, don't knock it.

I have to say I hate the faux fans. Cos he was such a pretty face and a pretty voice. Gets me riled up. He was more than an image.
tremelo
26-02-2004, 02:46 PM
True, he was - but that's nothing to be knocked. The image is all part of the magic - do you think The Beatles/ Muse/ Buckley/ Justin Timberlake/ Diana Ross/ any major star would have made it to the status they have it they had the musical talent but were ugly, boring, and un-stylish
Sarah
26-02-2004, 02:53 PM
The Beatles = ugly & boring.
tremelo
26-02-2004, 02:57 PM
You might think so - but at the time they were more controversial than any band can ever be again (mostly due to social times, admittedly) and had millions of people who would dispute the ugly claim.
Even with physical looks aside, their image (which changed over the years from moptops in suits to bearded inidian-influenced hippies) was a massive part of their success.
Sarah

Never heard of The Sex Pistols or Elvis? More contraversal than them hippy boys ever could have hoped to have been.

Never heard of The Sex Pistols or Elvis? More contraversal than them hippy boys ever could have hoped to have been.
I dont think the Beatles were great - was just saying how image is all part of the package, which you've just helped to prove even more.
Sex Pistols were just 'controversial' to get publicity, and just wound people up - they didnt incite the same kind of youth movement as the beatles.
But yeah, Im not fussed - I dont think either band are that great - just that image is as important to 'credible' music fans as 'pop' fans
Sarah
26-02-2004, 03:06 PM
Image is only worth something if there is something to go with it. In this instance, people ignore the rest and just admire his looks and his death. It's sick.
tremelo
26-02-2004, 03:09 PM
Yeah, fair point, though I never said image is more important - I said 'the image is part of the magic'
Sarah

For people living in a fantasy world... Yeah.
tremelo
26-02-2004, 03:36 PM
jeeez, do you actually read/ listen to anything? Image is a big part for EVERYBODY - yes there has to be something to go with it, but without his image/ 'glamourous death' i doubt YOU would be so into him either - not cos thats what you like directly but thats whats helped him get so much publicity/ adulation.
If he was a fat factory worker from Stoke who was still alive, no one would give a shit
Sarah
26-02-2004, 03:44 PM

Yeah but I mean how did you hear about him in the first place? You wouldnt have heard his music cos people wouldnt continue to give him the coverage they do. I do think he had a major talent, Im not disputing that.

it would be worth noting that tim buckely really wasn't that famous, he was more of a cult figure and lost a lot of his following later in his career.....
most of jeff's fans in the beginning didn't know who tim was...
those who did take an interest in him like that were mainly members of the music industry and smelled money...or wnated to reminisce....

My friend is obsessed with creating a stylish image for his band. Fashion faggot.
Whenever I played live I wore what I'd been wearing all day. Image should not be an issue in music. Goddamnit, the whole thing pisses me off.
Sarah
26-02-2004, 11:30 PM
Exactly.
Image is just something extra? The music is why I put it on my CD player. Can't see tits on the radio.
Whenever I played live I wore what I'd been wearing all day. Image should not be an issue in music. Goddamnit, the whole thing pisses me off.
Let's set the scene - you are being paid by punters to play live and perform for them - and you just turn up without a second's thought to how scruffy you might look (not suggesting you're a scruff in day to day dress btw!). Does that not show a lack of respect?
Of course the music comes first, but an image can get you noticed. For instance, the Darkness have become huge quickly because of their retro image - I personally don't think their music is good enough to stand the test of time.
If a band's image helps them become noticed (and they are good) then what's the problem?
tremelo

Jondalar - Happy Mondays image was a massive part of their success too - scruffy northerners that are always off their face on drugs....
You're missing the point - Im NOT saying image is the most important thing, but true icons have more than just good tunes.

Jondalar - yes! an image doesnt have to be constructed - but if happy mondays had been naturally quiet, boring people they wouldnt have caused the same hysteria.
But again, all im saying is that image can enhance the music - would you not agree?

Errr Tremelo....can I butt in here for a second? I can't remember who said this originally, but one quote that one of my friends told me was that "you don't see a face through the radio.....and that's where it starts" :D
Yes, image eventually comes into it, and that quote might not hold a lot of weight considering Radio 1's fairly unadventurous playlist (thank gawd for John Peel), but for most, it starts with the music.
Back on the subject of Jeff, if I put this guy on some kind of pedestal, I truly believe it's justified...regarding his skills as a singer, a musician AND a composer. Before I heard his version of "Hallelujah" (I admit I haven't heard the original), I heard Rufus Wainwright's version, which was ok enough, but Jeff's version, with a solo guitar & voice (and nothing else) was otherworldly. Absolutely.
I agree that he could have just as easily ballsed up "Sketches" as he could have progressed, hell, at times musicians can't do right for doing wrong in a climate where the majority think you only seem to be as good as your last record. However, some of the songs, such as "Vancouver", "Nightmares By The Sea" and "New Year's Prayer" showed real progression on his and his band's part, IMHO.
My two cents.

You dont care much for music do ya?? DO YA!!! :D

do you think ... any major star would have made it to the status they have it they had the musical talent but were ugly, boring, and un-stylish
thats true stuff... but i dont think the words ugly,boring,un-stylish are quite rite... surely u mean unappealing. i mean a band can b extremely ugly but appeal to you through their music in a way that means you see them externally for what they have to offer through their musical talents (or whichever other talents they may possess)
dno if i worded that correctly, ie if it makes any sense

Apocolypse King/ others - Yeah Im not saying I like stuff BECAUSE of the image - Im saying Jeff's image has helped him get the status he has got - yes, that may be because of the media, and yes, most of us would have liked him if we didnt know what he looks like - but the fact is the media (whether radio/ press/ TV/ internet) are less likely to have picked up on him in the same way if he wasnt attractive/ cool as well. So Jondalar, the image might nlt bother you but it does affect what you are introduced to. There's thousands of artists out there better than anything you will ever have heard, but you can only come across what you see directly (which is very limited) and what the media choose to play.
Plus, for the majority of people, music isnt the be-all-and-end-all - yes the music is the primary factor in what music I like, but if I think the people look rather funky, beautiful, cool in whatever way, then it's a bonus.
People who keep going on about how you dont always see the image first and you can like stuff you hear on the radio - I KNOW! I never said you cant, or that image is paramaount - just that it can add to the package, and work in an artist's favour, however underground they are.

I'm sure I said all this in the last thread...hmm. But I heard Grace years ago, on xfm (when it actually played good things? haha) and borrowed the album from my local library (classy) without knowing anything about him. I loved it and got a copy for my birthday, I think. I dunno, it was nothing to do with namechecking, no one I knew had even heard of him, and this was certainly before I'd heard of Muse so it wasn't through them either. I suppose he did have an image, but anyone who likes him just for that ought to be shot.

My mate asked me if i knew who Jeff Buckley was and said "Huh?". She gave me a tape and i fell in love with the music and his voice. I bought the album and it gets over palyed all the time, over played in the best possible way though.
The Live At Sine EP is smashing. You get to hear what he is really like how great his voice is live.
Such a shame he had to die. If you are a big fan i recommend the David Browne bio of Jeff and his dad.

I finished reading the biography. I wanted to cry, and i was reading it while listening to 'I know it's over' by the Smiths.
I recomend it but only if you are prepared to know some truths about Jeff Buckley. It maight not neccessarily want you want to hear or know. I was so surprised at his reactions to this life. If you do read it, the coincidences surrounding his death are very strange.

It started with
No Doubt, Nirvana, Coldplay, Oasis
to
Foo Fighters, Green Day, Korn, Idlewild, The Doves
to
Weezer, Biffy Clyro, Muse, Jeff Buckley, Elbow
to
Radiohead, The Libertines, Phantom Planet, Ryan Adams, Deftones, Cake, Bush, The Mars Volta, Damien Rice, PJ Harvey, Smashing Pumpkins and alot of old-school punk.
to
Interpol, Franz Ferdinand, Joseph Arthur, Spoon and The Strokes
to
Aqualung, Massive Attack, Iron and Wine, Kevin Shields, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Zutons
I narrowed it down, which is hard. I lost interest in two or three along the way, but these would be the ones that had a major impact in my 'music-line'. I've changed a bit.

Several people I know think that his music is boring pretetnious shit.
I don't see what he was aiming to be that was so unjustified. Boring? It's probably some of the most exciting stuff I've ever heard, fuck sake. Passionate voice, great lyrics and riffs full of fun - what more can one ask for?!

Just when you thought there was nothing left of Jeff to make money from . . . . Columbia are releasing a tenth anniversary version of "Grace" and it's coming out later this month.
It's a 3 disc set comprising :
1st disc is a remastered Grace album . .
2nd disc is a CD full of a mixture of studio stuff (from Grace sessions) including 'Forget Her', (which was originally meant to be on Grace, but Jeff kicked it off and put Dream Brother or something on instead), and live stuff from the tour to promote Grace just after its' release . .
3rd disc is a full length DVD (whatever 'full length' means) of the videos from Grace singles ie. Last Goodbye, Grace and So Real as well as interviews and other stuff.
Spun me out when I heard 'Forget Her' on the radio the other night! The announcer said nothing (as I switched over just after it started) but I knew it was Jeff - unmistakable. I'd just never heard the song before! I kept it to myself coz I thought my fellow Jeff fans would ridicule me and say that it had been out for years . . . :$ How rapt was I when I found out that it WAS new (so to speak)! :D
As happy as a fan of a dead guy can be.

I just saw yesterday the film Amazing Grace on Jeff at a special screening, and its being shown in festivals for about a year before they look for a release. I heard its playing in London today. Its really well done, they interview band members, acquaintances, and fans inspired by him , it was really profound what people had to say about him. they also show footage of jeff playing and just goofing off.
heres a link to the site with info on the film:

hmm i don't think you're right.
if you look at the chord progression and the chords falling down has some similarity's with "satisfied mind" from jeff buckley, just look up the tab. great song btw.
btw for the ppl who are about to buy the new legacy grace cd+dvd.
the 2nd cd with rare tracks are a bit dissapointing, the dvd is fun to look at but most of the footage i saw on the live @ sin-é dvd. and wel grace is just grace :) so for the ppl who are about to buy the cd, if you already have grace and sin-é i should think before i buy :)

I`m not buying it just for the DVD and that`s all that seems remotely good on it because I HAVE everything else. I'm sticking to Grace. Videos can ruin certain songs, as I have visions of the song myself, and I thankfully have avoided Last Goodbye.
I look forward to scamming on someone elses copy - but I will not pay magical unreal money for it. I certainly won't save for it.

When you say 'based', do you mean it's about him, inspired by him?
Yeah, when I first heard Matt sing I thought he was really obviously influenced by Jeff. I'm a new comer to Muse because I loved Our Time is Running Out. It reminded me of Jeff . . . then I discover that Matt saw him sing live (lucky sod) and hey presto . . .

lovelovelove Jeff.
My favourite song would have to be Morning Theft. Truly a masterpiece.
What do you all think of the decision to release Forget Her? I was personally very annoyed, considering when he was alive Jeff made it clear he didn't want that song to be released because it was too personal. I dunno. It just makes me feel weird listening to it...like i'm reading his diary or something. It just goes to show how they're still trying to squeeze money out of him
On a more positive note, was anyone here lucky enough to see him live? I didn't unfortunately :( But a friend of mine saw him here in Melbourne & spent a 2 hour flight talking to him. She said he was a lovely guy. :p

I adore Jeff Buckley.
He drew every last bit of emotion out of a song, it's hard to not feel anything. His voice just stuns me.
And as corny as it sounds, sometimes it aches my heart hearing his voice. I don't want to remember him for the way he left but it's there in back of my head, reminding me that a man of his talent has gone.
(excuse me for being a sad-arse today)

I want it. But I know I'll not let myself have it.
he was an absolute genius. i often wonder whether he's still alive, there are all these refrences to drowning and stuff. they may only be symbolic refrences and that it is one strange coincidence. one example is on the "live in chicago" DVD, where in the middle of Lilac Wine he sings "Oh how you tricked me, Liquid B**tard".
I wish he were still alive anyway, cos then there wouldn't have been "Sketches...", and there would probably have been many more albums which would have also kicked ass!
Is there anyone in the W.Yorks area who'd like to get in touch with me about Buckley? Want to form a tribute band and stuff.

Jeff Buckley drowned in the mississippi river in 1997, he went for a swim and apparently was dragged into the undertow of a passing boat. Unable to get up to the surface, he drowned.
Fuzz, He is not overrated, i hardly ever hear him get mentioned in day-to-day life and he had one of the best and most versitile voices in rock music.

He hits some pretty low notes, he sung in a lot of different styles, some of it came through in his live stuff more. Soft rock, hard rock, classical, soul, jazz, country and more, he was very versitile.

He wasn't popular at all, even with the indie kids, till he died.
Well, he was fair big in Australia & France. But yanno. Maybe a little over here too. Hm.

And also what are your favorite Buckley songs.
There is no Hallelujah like Buckley's Hallelujah, it's overwhelming.

I was alive back then but I don't really remember it.
But now I'm completely into his music. I don't think his music is crap at all. I think it is very smart song writing and his songs are really good, in my opinion. I think if given the chance to mature in his craft, he would have been really really good.

Jeff Buckley is amazing.
i don't care if his father, (or his death) propelled his career, he still had an amazing gift to give, and i'm glad that i've been fortunate to listen to his music, and essentially, his voice.

Just bought Grace by Jeff Buckley yesterday. It's brilliant. However, I don't find that Matt really sounds all that much like him. Maybe he has the same vocal range, but his voice is a lot different

Dunno, I'm just doing research. I am studying Audio Technology after the summer. I'm trying to see what works best. I do like produced albums. OOS has some of the most successfully transferred music on it I've ever heard. But I am begginning to think that actual musical honesty is getting overlooked for the sake of a masterpiece. Its nice to be perfect, but I think its also nice to hear that your arist is actually a living, braething and (god forbid) mistake making human being.

I got into J.B the summer after I finished my gcse's. I remember thinking at that time that I've never heard such truth and purity in any knind of music I'd ever listened to. Grace especially, has really helped me through some bad times. It's such a shame that such a spark was put out so early. I don't mean to sound like a fanatic/sadist but that book I mentioned earlier - it'll affect you in the same way as his songs.

yay! jeff is my (joint) idol. he had such charisma and made everything look so easy. it's a shame he departed, i think he could have achieved so much, without being confronted by his demons (ie. Tim Buckley's fate). Columbia really gave Jeff what he wanted without putting too much pressure on Jeff, unlike elektra with Tim.

Just wanted to say that Jeff Buckley was a very beautiful man.
I've been unable to stop listening to him for the past week. I've liked him for a fairly long time now, but never this much. He's definitely one of a kind.
I think his music-Grace espesh is brilliant. Dramatic, beautiful, pained, and sensitive. He had the most amzin voice and range. His songs are so well created adn recorded with such passion. He was amazin...hope there's still stuff to come that he recorded that hasn't been uncovered yet, he really inspires me! The music really moves me...... :'(

Argh. I haven't read every single post, but those first 5 pages are disgraceful. I make this thread to honor this great man (In my eyes he is at least) and show him the respect I believe he deserved.
What gives you the right to come in and start insulting his music and memory on a thread which was aimed to commemerate his DEATH. That is just infuriating. Thankyou to all the people who actually posted something worthwhile. Dream Brother Live is just amazing, especially the screamo bit.
Such passion I've never heard in any other musician before. And honestly, I don't want to.

It's just easier to feel cynical ever day.
i always say that album shouldnt have been released. it had some great songs on it but was clearly not finished and therefore should have been left as jeff intended. if he had lived none of us would have the versions of those songs we have so i dont see why we should have now he's dead.

When I got my copy of Grace from my Brother I didn't actually even know who Jeff Buckley was, let alone if he was alive or dead. That was back in 1998 I think. It didn't hit me as a classic instantly, but the more I listened the more I went back to it. I'm still not keen on a few of the tracks (Lilac Wine has never really been a favourite for example) but the stuff I do like (Last Goodbye, Grace, Hallelujah, Eternal Life, Lover You Should Have Come Over) are pretty regularly played on iTunes.
Sketches is an odd record really, given the state of it. As mentioned before, no one knows what he was going to do with the final mixes. I really like some of the tunes on it (Yard Of Blonde Girls, Nightmares By The Sea, Witches Rave) but some of the tracks (mostly on the second disc) are not too good. Then again they probably weren't intended to be heard like that, so it's kind of awkward listening.
Still, the guy was very talented and made some beautiful music :).
