What bands/ artists do you despise the most?

#1 on my list is Avril Lavigne. Not only can't she write music, but every interview i've ever read or seen her do, she's made herself look like a complete tool.

Then there's all those actress turned singer clones, particualrly:
Mariah Carey
Lindsay Lohan
Hillary Duff

Killers, Bravery, Keane, Athlete, Oasis, Stereophonics, Maroon 5, they all make me want to get up and break whichever appliance they're being emitted from...
To a lesser extent Coldplay, but I can manage some of their stuff.

It's like people have made more of a hobby of hating music than liking it lately, but I'll still contribute.

At the moment, Franz & almost all of the bands on Brand Spanking New Music on MTV2.

i don't like Slipknots gimmick but i really like their stuff.

their live show sounds fantastic. i watched the show at Cardiff on TV, and they made all 5,000 or so people sit down, and then played Diluted i think, and then everyone got up and there was just a pit in the whole arena! my friend was telling me that they did it at Download last year, got a good 10,000 people to sit down, then get them to get up and pit when they restart the song.

Aww, I love MCR (only punk pop band I like) and I'm going to see them in August.

I don't like Linkin Park and Evanescence either (and it's true Amy Lee cannot sing live. I saw her with Seether a few weeks ago.).

And I absolutely hate Ashley Simpson and Madonna. My sis likes them both but she won't admit to liking ashley simpson but she downloaded her whole album. I hate slipknot. Ok, I hate most heavy metal. And I hate any form or Rap/Hip Hop.

hip hop sucks, techno trance sucks, heavy mostly sucks, i quite like Velvet Revolver tho..... who else sucks, erm, Franz Ferdinand and Kaiser Chiefs, they ok, but WAY overrated, same goes 4 Linkin Park. Most rap and r&b, or most of the stuff that's in the charts at the moment. I just can't stand it. My other pet peeves are things like boybands who just sing. Bands who play their own instruments have far more respect from me.

Oh, and I have an immense love/hate relationship with Green Day. I love their music sometimes, and other times I hate it for being so simple, power-chord-ridden and generic. In fact, I usually hate them when my friends are obsessing about them.

Everything "sounds the same" if you never listen to it as you're not used to the differences in styles within whatever genre. There is some modern & "old skool" R&B that is fucking sensational & quite frankly it is yours or whoevers' loss that you are missing out without actually trying it. No one who dismisses a whole genre can consider themselves open minded as every genre has good & bad stuff. I don't believe in the whole "it's not my thing". Is a good song not your thing, then?

It does sound the same to me, but then again perhaps rock 'n' roll sounds the same to other people.. & I like a broad spectrum of music, but I've never been bothered with R 'n' B etc.

A good song is my thing, but R 'n' B just doesn't seem to have a good song, well, not for me anyway. But it will for other people ie: you.

I have heard plenty of R 'n' B - new & old, & I just can't get to grips with it. Not 'cause I don't understand it, 'cause it does my head in.

Hmm. I completely disagree. Firstly, you cannot have a really broad spectrum of taste in music if you have dismissed a whole genre. Makes me wonder what other genres are in that bin, as well. & everything "sounds the same", as I said before, to those who don't listen to it enough. You cannot tell me that in the WHOLE of the R&B genre from the last 25 years, you haven't heard ONE decent song & that every single track sounds the same. It's impossible. How could a genre live so long in the mainstream if every song sounded the same? Surely people would get bored of it considering how fickle they are? I can accept that they genres people prefer not to listen to all the time but the odd excellent song does creep it's way into a playlist. But to think EVERYTHING in such a huge genre is boring/monotonous or whatever is bollocks.

I hear about things like this so much & it curves way beyond being subjective as people have stupid little hang ups or prejudices about a whole scene of music. Fair enough, as the only person missing out on some fucking brilliant songs is the person with these stupid prejudices. God forbid someone would stray from the alternative rock scene, eh?

Well, I like classical, ska, jazz, rock 'n' roll, reggae, heavy metal, thrash metal, death metal, black metal, goth[ic] metal, house, hardhouse, hardcore, happy hardcore, electronica, techno, [some] garage [well, I suppose that is quite close to R 'n' B.. with the singing], drum 'n' bass, blues, [some] pop [even though I said I hated it, I don't mind Kylie] & soul... That's all I can think of at the moment. So, I think it's a varied taste. If I hear a song in any of those catagories & I like it, then I'll admit it. I'm not ashamed to tell my opinion about it.

Well these genres, & R 'n' B, rap [freestyling] & old skool R 'n' B are the only genres I know of, so the only ones I have put in the bin are the last three. All the others above them are ones that I either love, like, or don't mind listening to. The latter three really give me a headache & wind me up, but I suppose I could say that I have liked a R 'n' B song that I've heard in the past - be it 'cause of the voice of a female singer or a okay beat in the background. But would you want to listen to something if it got on your nerves?! Perhaps I should listen to it more to distinguish the difference of the beats, it would broaden my spectrum a bit further, but I really don't want to.

YES! Exactly.
I always get angry when people dismiss genres. A good song is a good song, whether it's got a 68-piece orchestra or just a bongo accompanying it doesn't matter.

why Pearl Jam?

I'm not sure if any major band ever managed their success as adroitly as Pearl Jam -- maybe U2 or the Rolling Stones, but they merely figured out a way to maintain their achieved status. Pearl Jam actually constructed the curve (and the meaning) of their entire existence. I'm confused by people who hate Pearl Jam. I can't understand why anyone would hate a group that became the biggest band in the world and then dedicated its career to quietly becoming average size. Pearl Jam only made one great song ("Corduroy"), but they have about 19 others that are better than decent; they easily could have made three more albums that were replicants of Ten and spent the remainder of their days eating lobster claws inside a biosphere of gold. But they didn't. They didn't, because they thought that would make them unlikable. You see, nice guys do not finish last; nice guys finish in the middle.

I agree, I just don't like to listen to their music. I used to listen to them a lot as a kid, I recently gave the cd's another try and especially Ten is an awful album... Matter of taste I guess, but I can't stand them anymore. Doesn't mean I don't respect them. Unlike U2 and Linkin Park.

apart from the obvious (modern hip-hop, r&b, country, atonal electronic muck) i hate post-punk in practically all forms. i hate how it was incredibly mopey in comparison to hip-hop from the same time that tried to give people hope in shit times...not say 'please please please let me get what i want...lord knows it'll be the first time' (although the muse cover was pretty good i'll admit)...that's just so negative! thing is i'm studying music management and most of my friends would slaughter me if i defied the word of curtis or morrissey...so i tend to keep my mouth shut on the matter otherwise.

What's even more phony is their excuse: "We signed with Sony because we want to spread our message to a wide audience"... BULLSHIT!! So RATM thinks that you can only be heard on a major label? Say that to The Offspring, they sold over 6 million records while signed to an indie label.

most current hiphop, r&b, rappish pop, Rihanna-type stuff....

a lot of it has really catchy funky basslines that hook people, but thats because they keep using/stealing from Stevie Wonder, Chic/SisterSledge etc. Time and Time again, its just gets murdered!

Bernard Edwards from Chic created some of the most amazing funky bass lines ever and they get used over and over. Have a listen and you'll recognise most of his work!

That's why they originally split up actually. And of all the bands i'd call "politically correct" Rage would be just about the last on my list!

why Pearl Jam?

You see, nice guys do not finish last; nice guys finish in the middle.

they've done shit all wrong.

They may have done "shit all wrong" but they also did "shit all" right. Their music is as painfully bland as it comes. I can only listen a couple of tracks in a row before I want to throw my CD player against the wall in frustration. :noey:

Why is everybody slating modern hip-hop? It's as though you're judging the entire 'genre' on the basis of what is in the charts. There are loads of modern hip-hop artists who are far more original than any rock band around at the moment.

I love the title track - it's definitely the best mixture of rock band, orchestra, choir and tape sounds that I've ever heard. The rest of the album isn't as good but it's definitely not a bad LP!

The band also think the album was a mistake, so maybe those devious misleading people have a better understanding of the band's intentions. Haha.

 Maybe they do at that! Interesting paradox...but then critics and listeners often have a completely "other" view of a work than the artists themselves (I don't suppose a band could ever truly be objective about their own work) and it's often a toss-up anyway, your own reaction, depending on your mood and inclinations!

(Boy, did I spend some money yesterday--got ATH, Animals, More, also two each from Blur and Suede--gonna have to last me a while, that lot is!)

I must say that I really hate the trend of 'feat' going on. Every 'big production' "artist" like jay-z, nelly furtado, gwen stefani, 50 cent (well he has no choice after losing his bet), generally all those pop puppets are being mashed together all for the sake of combining fanbases for more sales.

There's ZERO artistic motivation for featuring artists, it's all for the money.

And this is the most horrendous thing I've ever seen:

I love music thats creative, inventive, challenging, interesting and pushes against boundaries in some way. What I heard was (apart from Saul Williams) a collection of small highly unimaginative, repetitive samples and highly predictable spoken lyrics. There was nothing to love.

From the first video, J Dilla has more to him than the other things I heard by him. The second one did absolutely nothing for me at all though. By the 6th minute I was utterly bored.

EDIT:

Fair do's, I have exactly the same musical ethic as does the record label (Stone's Throw) that all the artists are on - so it's all good :). The second J Dilla is very much a purist one, takes an awful lot of listening to to click - it's more of a record collector's track if that makes sense. All those artists set out to do exactly what you described, though sadly none of the good stuff is one youtube :(

But anyway Hip-hop stuff to check out that'll suit your tastes

Dalek - Paragraphs Relentless
Flying Lotus - Massage Situation
Madvillian - Money Folder (four tet remix)
Madlib - Beat Konducta in India (possibly my favourite recird of all time)
J Dilla - Donuts
13 & God - Atlas
Quiet Village Project - Circus of Horrors
Monk Hughes - Tribute to Brother Weldon
Jaylib - The Red

I haven't come across any rap I don't hate yet. I can't entirely dismiss the genre but so far I haven't come across anything that's redeemed it for me. It's more the "singing" style, it's just too abrasive for me. Can't enjoy it on any level.
