eBay was originally called Auction Web. The URL was www.ebay.com. People started calling it eBay rather than Auction Web, and it stuck.

I love eBay.
There was a small problem with transferring my money onto a Paypal account once (Russia isn't allowed to have one of those, Bummer) because of some error, but it all worked out in the end :D
I found signed Discworld prints (Pratchett's and Briggs's) for a penny each... Too bad that other bidders just had to spend twenty something pounds. Why couldn't they be a little late so that I could get them, eh?

I have a question ablout Ebay. I'm only 17 and theres something that I really want to buy. Should I:
a) Register under my mum's name (I've talked to her and she's cool with it)
b) Just make myself a year older (I can use my own email address, have it shipped to my name etc.)

Whats the best thing to do to avoid getting in trouble? What are the consequences if they know I'm faking my age?

go with your mums name, they need you to verify your name and age and stuff anyways using a credit/ debit card/ bank account so i dont think you can register under a fake age

Im a n00b when it comes to ebay..

can anyone help me out..

I placed a bid but the reserve is not met. Is there any chance ill win it? if it ends like that and im the higest bidder?

You may not win the auction, but sometimes, even if the reserve is not met and you are the highest bidder, they might send you a personal second chance offer so you can buy it for your highest bid.... or something.

I've had that happen to me before. <3 Second chances.

It's not guaranteed though obviously. Depends whether you're willing to take the risk.

Well, if you want, I'll bid on the damn thing just below your highest bid, so you'll have a greater chance of getting the it. And don't worry, I don't want a guitar, so I won't be stealing it away from you. And don't fuck me over either, boy! Or I WILL have revenge ever so sweetly. :)

Well that's my point, dumbass. You bid a certain amount (which Ebay won't put up until somebody challenges that bid) and I bid just under that, so it goes up. With any luck, you'll meet the reserve.

Um...I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure this is how ebay works - if you bid say £20 on something that's at £10, it'll go up to £11 and whenever someone bids between £11 and £20 the price goes up that you have to pay.

Anyone see Transformers The Movie?
Did you see the amount of advertising in it?

Now before you consider what was advertised the most,
Recall the part where Optimus Prime's face is in the screen, and he says, "Ebay."

.usually your post office can provide the boxes/soft packaged envelopes.but if you can find a box at home it'll save you some money...
they charge you on weight...and whether you are shipping domestic or int'l...
and they usually tape up the boxes for you as well...just make sure you have the address of the person you are sending the item[s] to on hand...b/c many people forget that and hold up the line at the post office...

It annoys me when people sell things for so much more than they are worth. There's this band and their early cds are super hard to find an this person is selling ALL the early stuff, but like for starting prices inbetween 50 and 250 dollars. I'm sorry, but I really don't have that sort of money and I think that's just crazy. Haven't people ever heard of sharing the joy of music?

yea they should start the biddings low...and keep them listed for 7 days...

you can block zero-feedback buyers i believe, as well as buyers that have not paid for items (recently). i've done that, but then that's less people buying your stuff.

I'm not particularly liking ebay at the moment - for selling mainly.

fees, idiot buyers, new confusing selling interface..

and the fact that sellers can't leave negative feedback for say, a non paying bidder - where buyers can leave negatives for sellers.

anyone ever seen that section of ebay where they usually have the 'jesus on toast' auctions etc? lots of things in that section freak me out.

Q: I notice that the car appears to have been fitted with a telegraph pole, only visible in the pictures after the Jedi visited, is this strictly legal? Will the lucky buyer receive a payment from BT for this ? 26-Mar-09
A: The car doesn't have a BT land line fitted nor does it come with broadband. The Missus quite likes the idea of being referred to as a Jedi, although perhaps not Yoda. Were there any good looking Jedi, does Princess Leia count?

Q: Hello kind sir. May I congratulate you on your choice of rare ferrari, as demonstrated by the rare 'go faster ferrari colours and alloys'. However on a serious note, could this car be turned upside down and used as a boat, I am planning on ferrying illegal immigrants, would you care to join me in this venture? Kind regards Gwynne 24-Mar-09
A: Thank you for your enquiry. The Rover can accommodate 5 illegal immigrants in comfort and if you blacked out the windows I feel sure that you could get the occupants past customs. I am afraid I can only help you if you are ferrying them out of the UK rather than in to it though, if that's what you were planning then we could probably fit a couple in the boot as well.

amazing

Q: What time is it??? 26-Mar-09
A: Hammer Time! But unlike MC Hammer you can touch this if you are the highest bidder.

Hi there

Please be advised that at present the Royal Mail is only working a 4 day
week and they have a massive back log aswell !

They have advised that even though we send all our items out via FIRST CLASS
MAIL they may still take upto 15 WORKING DAYS to reach you.

We sincerely apologise on their behalf and hope you are able to extend your
understanding and patience on this matter.

Kind regards

Anyone read their new policy?

To improve service standards there will now be an additional DSR measure. This new Minimum Standard will count the number of 1 and 2 star ratings sellers receive. This measure is being introduced because 1 and 2 star ratings are a clear indication that a buyer has had a bad shopping experience.
Sellers with less than 400 eBay transactions will need to keep their total DSRs of 1 and 2 below the Minimum Standard. The Minimum Standard for item description is 3% or 3 total DSRs of 1 and 2 over the last 12 months. For communication, dispatch, and P&P charges, the minimum Standard is 4% or 4 total in the last 12 months.
If the rate of 1s and 2s goes over any of these limits sellers will get lowered placements in search and may even face limits on selling activity until their ratings improve.
Find out your percentage of low DSRs below.

Dominic.

Hi, last week I sold a PSP on ebay, and I then sent it off safely wrapped at the beginning of this week (without being aware of the postal strikes). Before I sent it off I got an email from PayPal saying that it had been payed for, but it said that it may take 3 days to show up in the account... 3 days later and my parents (I'm not old enough to have my own bank account yet) said that there hasn't been any money recieved :S and this was after I had sent the item. PayPal say that there mayb be something do with "chargeback" or something like that and I'm just concerned over the whole thing :(

Awesome. Some sellers need a kick in the face.

The feedback system was such a joke for buyers before. I like the anonymous star ratings system they've put in.

I am an eBay noob...have just sold a coat, and I have stated that I only accept Paypal payments, do Paypal send an invoice to the winning bidder automatically?

Yeah they get an email from eBay and paypal about the auction they won and to pay via paypal. Some winners don't pay right after they win...personally I do bc it puts the buyer at ease and means I'll get my item(s) faster. I'm sure the person will pay soon. If it's 7 days and they don't pay then I'd just send them an email through eBay and give them a friendly reminder. But I'm sure the person will pay soon.

I have receipt of postage, I mean what can I do?? I explained that I dispatched another item same time to someone else and they received it no issues.

Ugh this is why I HATE ebay so much. Halp

What the hell?
I thought you're not allowed to file a dispute until a certain amount of days have passed.
The buyer who gave you bad feedback is an ass. The new eBay rules protect buyers and don't give a shit about sellers. I hate that the buyers can basically get away w anything on eBay. They can claim they never received an item and get all their money back even if they got it. So ALWAYS get tracking on your items. I do it and I always mention that the shipping they are paying for includes tracking so it protects me, the seller, as well.

Ordered some silicone bakeware and they sent the wrong stuff. Contacted the seller and they said I should return the items to them. I hope they assume I'm not going to pay for the shipping costs (it was sent to my home address in NL and it will be way more than the £2 I paid for them to ship it to me).

Grrrr effort.
