Went to one of their UK concerts in Coventry last sunday. It was feckin great.
They played a mixture of their old and new stuff, they played Can't Stop, Dani California, Scar Tissue, Fortune Faded, Charlie, Stadium Arcadium, Californication, Tell Me Baby, By The Way, Give It Away and another song which i don't know the name to (it isn't on any of their albums).
soul to squeeze by any chance?

I love their old and new stuff,
I've seen a few posts about they liked certain stages, I like all of it, my favourite album is mothers milk and my favourite song is fortune faded.

Its changed over the years, but I like it now just as much as it used to be

Californication is my favourite album. I lost interest in the band round about the time their live album came out which was late July/early August 2004. I'm not a huge fan as I used to be. I haven't even bought Stadium Arcadium yet and I'm not in a rush to buy it either.

Saw them at Hyde Park and Earl's Court, probably my number 2 fav band. I love BSSM and actually OHM, SA probably isn't their best but it's awesome all the same. And I love the fact they don't completely ignore their back catalogue and B Sides.

greg
09-12-2006, 04:39 PM
i'd say they pretty much do ignore their back cat and b sides.

when i saw then in 2003 every song they played BAR 3 were from BTW & Californication in a 2 hour set.

That's saying something, seeing as Californication was a pretty damn strong album.

Stand-outs for me on Stadium Arcadium include "Dani California", "Storm In A Teacup", and "She's Only 18". I never realized this until recently, but "She's Only 18" is a pretty damn good locker-room pump-up song, as it brings out the mentality to knock your opponents on their asses. It's great in that regard.

I saw them the 11/12/06 and....wooooow since this concert I fall in love for their music!!

I have a question for you : I read in a French forum that Matthew more or less had the leaning one for the Nazism, in certain songs of the words are ambiguous.I do not have enough vocabulary for to explain. that's true? I hope no. Thank you very much for your answers to help me :)

gotta say, muse and rhcp have been battling it out for years as far as my fave band goes, and its still not over. Flea is without doubt one of the best bassists in the world at the moment, as is john with guitar, as is chad with drums, they are an awesome band, but i much prefer the pre dave navarro stuff, bssm, mothers milk, uplift mofo etc etc, funky shit

id reccommend any chili peppers fan to join the board http://www.stadium-arcadium.com, kicks the shit out of the official bbs, but it is goin a little downhill lately

i dont agree with that, i can think of many inbetween bssm and hump de bump which i find better: warped, around the world, californication, throw away your television, scar tissue...

One of the best live tracks ive heard in ages.

my favourite chili track at the moment is i could have lied

And to clunge, hump de bump is klass, but i think turn it again is even better. I also think Hey (not snow (hey oh)) is probably the best on the album. but each to his own ey

Pretty much the most influential band of my childhood if Foo Fighters aren't counted. Still love Californication and especially By the Way (their best album in my mind). Their funk or punk things never really gave me anything. The melodic nature of By the Way and the Beach Boys-styled harmonic singing is ace. Great record. You can clearly hear how Kiedis had taken classical singing lessons just before Californication. His singing is actually good.

Too bad they've drifted off to blandness ever since.

lyricalwax
26-10-2008, 07:24 AM
I think Stadium Arcadium gets a bad rap imo. Yes it has lot of filler being 28 songs long, but there are some really good songs on there (if you're a fan of their music). I still dislike their funk stuff (and funk music in general for that matter) so immediately there's quite a few I never listen to, but out of the rest there's at least around 8 very good songs; intricate, guitar work, beautiful melodies with thoughtful lyrics, and a few more which are rather average/ok but hardly terrible. I know it's all horses for courses, each to their own, etc but I find comments of dull, crap, bland, etc. a bit wide of the mark, maybe even because it has become fashionable of late to slate the band, due to their age or genre or something, I don't know. I guess their bad performance at Reading didn't help.

Anyway, just thought I'd go against the grain and leap to the defence of SA.

They're standard enough, 'Blood Sugar Sex Magik' is a great album and 'Under The Bridge' remains one of my favorite songs of all time, eevn the All Saints version was bareble which is an achievment in itself.. Their early rap inspired stuff such as the self titled debut and 'Freaky Styley' are also pretty good albums, However I havent really thought much of anything the have produced since 'Blood Sugar Sex Magik' a couple of tracks aside.

Album wise, I love Californication the most. The songs are... I dunno, the right ratio of early-Chiliness : Lyrical Chiliness for me. Later they lose their edge (though By the Way has some awesome songs on it too) and earlier on they're a bit too... coarse for me. Their sound, I mean. And while I adore that coarse/unpolished aspect in other bands (if that makes any sort of sense), I just don't think it suits that Anthony guy's voice too well.

" It would appear that John Frusciante is no longer working with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, according to a source close to the band.

"Josh Klinghoffer has been playing with the group for a couple of months now," says the source. "Optimistically, the Peppers are trying to lock down a replacement for John, who has apparently quit.

Mentally, John checked out a long time ago. He's interested in doing his own thing, his own albums - the whole big rock band machinery just doesn't appeal to him anymore."

The news that Frusciante has quit can hardly be viewed as surprising. During a podcast interview with MusicRadar earlier this year, the guitarist was lost for words during a routine question about the status of the group. He paused for nearly 30 seconds (later edited) before awkwardly stating that the Peppers had "no plans."

Frusciante also refused to be introduced to be as "guitarist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers," preferring instead to be called, simply, "guitarist".

This wouldn't be the first time Frusciante has split from the band: Overwhelmed by the success of Blood Sugar Sex Magik, he quit in 1992 and descended into heroin addiction. After kicking drugs cold turkey, he rejoined the Peppers in 1999 for the album Californication (the group had fired his replacement, Dave Navarro, a year earlier).

Still, the past decade hasn't been an easy ride for Frusciante. Intensely private, he has issued a number of wildly experimental, introspective solo recordings - a stark contrast to the over-the-top, circus-like antics of life in the Chili Peppers. Rumors of his commitment to the band resurfaced late last month when, during an interview with Classic Rock Magazine, drummer Chad Smith, responding to a question about Frusciante's involvement, stated: "Well...at this time I can't talk about that. I have been told to stay away from the John questions."

Oddly enough, Klinghoffer is not only friends with the Chili Peppers but with Fruscinate as well. "Josh has been on everybody's radar for quite some time," says the source. "He's extremely popular within a certain circle of LA musicians.

"The big thing right now that the band will have to consider is, Can Josh write great songs? Can he help push them forward? Everybody knows he can play, but the Peppers need somebody who can come up with amazing material and get them moving again."

Although I think the Chili's are way past their best :( By The Way was great but Stadium Arcadium showed how different they were even from then, and how downhill they had gone.

On the flipside, they could be great again, who knows. Josh Klinghoffer (:chuckle:) might make a great difference, and is maybe the shake-up they need?

Hi, how may I help you?

I adored a good half of Stadium Arcadium on my last listen (months ago and the other half was shit :p)- there' a different sound and feel to every album and that was with the same guitarist.

It's definitely gonna be different whether it's a good thing or a band thing remains to be seen.

Also Anthony Kiedis is a bit shit isn't he, he could do with replacing :ninja:

I'm disappointed, but I'm glad I saw them at Hampden Park in 2007.

I'll buy the next album but I won't go see them live. Without John, they're incomplete.

Ah, I heard :(

Fucks sake though. I'm annoyed that he quit A WHOLE YEAR AGO and the fans only find out today. A whole year?! It's like saying to your partner you stopped loving them a year ago. Utter bullshit.

Oh well though, he's been in the Chilis for a bloody long time and done some fucking good work with them. End of an era, start of a new one with Josh Klinghoffer, I wonder what the new band dynamic will be like.

Haha, that's a good analogy.
I'm still trying to get over the name Josh Klinghoffer.

Does this mean that John last show with the Chili's was Leeds Festival 2007? If show then I'm glad that I was there for his last performance with them.

One of my top 3 guitarists.

loooove the chili peppers, californication was one of the best albums ever made, hands down.

too bad john's leaving, but if his heart's not in it, then whats the point? hes great (one of the greatest imo), but they may be better off with klinghoffer. lookin forward to the album this year

This band is absolutely fantastic when in the right mood. Especially their older, more funkier stuff.

Been giving some stuff a whirl recently and I like it.

Lovely stuff then that a new album's coming out soon. It's working title according to an interview Anthony Kieldis had recently is interesting... "Dr. Johnny Skinz's Disproportionately Rambunctious Polar Express Machine-head"

I'll probably still give this a listen, but I haven't really listened to these guys that much in a while. Even their albums that I consider great I havent gone back to in about a year or so, and it's doubtful that this one will be up there with, lets say, Californication. Still, i'll try it out, see what its like. Unlike a lot of people, I still think that they can do good stuff without John (see: One Hot Minute).

That being said, Rick Rubin again? Really? I mean, his work on BSSM is, in my opinion, one of the best production jobs that i've ever heard on a rock album, but he's been dragging them down since Californication.

New single. I like it. It's funny cos me and a friend were wondering how it was gonna sound and we predicted pretty much this song. Dominant bass line, waka-waka guitar stuff and a catchy heyyyy-aww-yeahhhh-hawww chorus.

Yeah, this makes me sad. I had high hopes of Josh injecting a fresh, modern sound into the band, this sounds like glimmers of their older, less prominent material in a generic package.

Really hope the rest of the album is good.

^ This.

Last I heard, he was doing some stuff with Swahili Blonde but he has apparently left them now as well. Frusciante is too much of a genius to stay quiet for so long, it shouldn't be allowed!

As for the new RHCP song, I would like it a lot more without that painfully average chorus. As it is, it's just good; no more, no less. I really do like the verses; Anthony sounds great, the bassline is v.funky through good headphones, Chad's cowbell work made me smile, Josh's guitar fills and subtle backing vocals are very nice. All in all, it has made me look forward to the new album because the Chili's singles are rarely their best songs. Hopefully there will be some exciting stuff on it.

Yes. I have been over at some chillis forum, and although some favour maggie more than others, i havent seen a single person put it as first.

The piano breakdown in police station is like something out of a muse/radiohead song, but possibly better.

Listening through and on first impression, this album is about 100x better than I actually thought it would be! Klinghoffer seems to have seemlessly slipped into the mould beautifully. 'Brendan's Death Song' is amazing, utterly, utterly amazing. I can feel the big Frusciante-sized gap in there sure, but nonetheless a very impressive album

Yes, just listened to the first 2 tracks through the iTunes stream and I already love both of these way more than Raindance Maggie. I'm only letting myself listen to the first 2 songs in order to keep the rest of an album a surprise for when my CD comes through the mail on Monday.

Glad to see that the same happened with this album as it did with Stadium Arcadium. Didn't really like Dani California as the first single, but the rest of the album was awesome.

Srsly. Las Vegas is closer to Los Angeles than where Coachella is hosted as well. So if I had to choose between a music festival in the middle of nowhere or Las Vegas, I'm sure as hell going to head to Vegas. It's what I did with Muse as well when they played Coachella.
