So much more than the best Swedish metal band out there, check 'em out if you haven't already!

I'm really not into very heavy music, but I was surprised to find that I quite like Opeth.
I've only got Blackwater Park at the moment, though, but I should get other albums soon enough.

Is that a good place to start? or is there much better Opeth albs?

the song Blackwater Park, at 5:14, corr, sends shivers down my spine.

the whole build up, to that absolutely amazing riff, and the growl. *shudders*

Opeth have slowly become my favorite band over the last couple years. Just incredible music, all-around. Not to mention SERIOUS heaviness, which couldn't possibly a bad thing. :D Add in Steven Wilson to produce on the last couple albums, and it's tough to get much better, methinks.

Opeth fans! I can't believe it! Every forum I've been a part of, NOBODY has any clue as to who Opeth are.

Anyway, I freaking love Opeth. Most brilliant band. Ever. I own all seven of their albums, and their DVD Lamentation (which is fantastic).

My brother, father, and I discovered them by chance, actually. We were just bored one weekend and my dad was searching for any concert that we could go to and he somehow managed to run across Opeth. We listened to some clips online which sounded pretty ace. I really wasnt into the whole growling thing then, and really didn't like it, but the music otherwise sounded so good we decided "Ah what the hell, lets buy tickets."

So we bought two of their albums, Damnation and Deliverance first. I still didn't like the growling, but I fell in love with their soft album, Damnation. Then I felt brave and started listening to Deliverance, and discovered are absolutely amazing this band really was, and I grow completely used to the growling and now I love it. We went to the concert, and let me tell you, Opeth are absolutely jaw-dropping live. I mean, literally. During the performance of "Deliverance", my brother and my father actually turned towards each others, and their jaws slowly dropped in awe. It was amazing.

Now I own all their albums and must say, they are and always will be my favorite band. No band can top Opeth. Personally, my favorite albums are Deliverance and Blackwater Park (and Damnation when I'm in a softer mood), but that might jsut be because I've listened to them more than any other album. My brother says he can't choose which is best, because they're all amazing in their own way. Oh, and if you like Opeth, their DVD Lamentation is a MUST HAVE. Its a live concert and also behind the scenes on the making of Damnation and Deliverance. Awesome.

Sorry, I didn't really mean to write an essay, but I really get absolutely psyched whenever I come across other Opeth fans (which is RARE for me) so I just can't control myself! :D

Yeah. Basically all it comes down to is this: Opeth are the best band out there right now. Nobody has put out so much quality stuff in a relatively short period of time like they have.

Can't wait for the new album later this year.

Pain of Salvation > Opeth

Not by alot, but still...

Also, fans of Opeth may like Novembre(mix heavy and soft, but differently than Opeth)
And if you want crazy guitar, try Children of Bodom

progmetalfan

I'd probably put Pain of Salvation on almost the same level as Opeth. I don't think PoS have been able to have as high a consistency with their albums like Opeth have.

And Bodom is also a great, young band.

That reminds me. The riff in The Funeral Portrait (sucks it isn't on the DVD) starting @ 1:15, is the best riff of all-time. 'Nuff said.

And it sucks that Opeth couldn't put any pre-2001 songs on the DVD due to contract issues. :indiff: Would have been even better with some oldies.

Oh yes, Funeral Portrait is a brilliant song. I especially love the part at about 6:48 where he starts singing. The harmony there...and everything..it's just..it's just great. It gives me butterflies.

Their touring keyboardist has also joined the band permanently, and there is going to be mellotrons and Hammond organs on the new album. :D

Can't wait until this baby hits the shelves. There's also gonna be an announcement soon as to what label they have signed on with.

After several months away from his drumming duties in Opeth Martin Lopez has permanently decided to leave the group.
After being plagued by illness and anxiety attacks Lopez decided he wanted to concentrate fully on his own project, currently unnamed.
His replacement will be Martin "Axe" Axenrot who's been filling in for the last 5 tours and who also recorded with the band during the recent BBC sessions.

Mikael Åkerfeldt: " However sad I and the rest of the band feel in light of Lopez departure I want to thank him for his incredible work with Opeth and immense dedication to the band. We recorded some classic stuff together and he obviously had an enormous impact on our sound. I now feel very excited to hear the material of his own band. In the meantime Opeth fans can rest assured that we'll continue jamming it out with Axe and we all have high expectations about our coming musical ventures "

so does anyone know much about Martin Axenrot? :erm:

oh and the Akerfeldt, Wilson, Portnoy thing will "probably become reality in the near future".
"The project will maintain a low key and interviews will be sparse. This will be a sheer musical communion that its members wish to keep clear of the "supergroup" hype."

'Rotting all over the world...

Hello....yes.....hello there!

Just a quick note to fill you (if you care) in on what's cooking and stuff....like that.....

Roundhouse/UK gig DVD: Well, the music is mixed and it sounds nothing less than awesome I must say. The film material is also edited and it looks great too! We went through a lot of fan interviews as well which was hilarious. Most of the interview material that was shot is going to be used, although there were severe audio problems with some and those can't be used for that reason. I was struck by how drunk all of you fuckers were....great!! I felt like partying myself watching it! All I can say is, it will be pretty good all in all....pretty fucking good indeed. Release date? Don't know right now, I guess late Spring. Title? I have it but will announce it later on opeth.com.

Next Opeth Lp: I'm writing and it's going quite well. I have around a dozen of song ideas. Some are downright evil sounding....a few Bathory (evil era 83-87) parts, some tech-death ones, some overblown prog ballad ones, one Nick Drake thing, one complete prog thing with triple harmony vocals, one evocative middle eastern psychedelic metal arrangement with falsetto vocals (not as wimpy sounding as you might think), one 70´s Scorpions sounding bit (like "Living and dying" type of stuff), one's totally murky forest-ish sounding dark prog-rock with loud vocals that shifts between major and minor, one tedious ugly/pretty little hobbit sounding symf part with moogs over a classical guitar, some soundtrack-ish sounding ones etc...
Yes, it's business as usual....

I don't know when or where we'll record but I guess late this year. I want to make sure it....rocks....somewhat! No titles, lyrics or anything like that so don't ask.

Wilson/Portnoy thingie: I don't know...maybe it's off, maybe it's on...I've no idea really....don't hold your breath.

Overall I feel good but my brain is making me sick as I feel (maybe too) inspired.

Listening to: A-ha, "Hunting high and low"...what a song! Tony Macalpine (some 80´s shred...I don't know why but I had to listen to him), Camel - Snow goose (got stuck in an endless airport que and needed to "calm down"), Jan Johansson - Jazz på Svenska (endless fave but listened to it as well for the above reason, same que), Judas Priest - Sad wings of destiny (If you ask why, you're a geek!).

Sorry, this message is fucked up and disjointed but that's where I'm at right now.

Hope all of you are well!
Best regards

Lars Mikael Åkerfeldt'

Mneme, start with Blackwater Park, it's Opeth at their height of greatness.

After that, I'd suggest getting both Deliverance and Damnation, Deliverance is a full album of completely heavy tracks and Damnation is a completely acoustic album.

Then have a look at one of their older albums, My Arms, Your Hearse would be my suggestion.

Do you mean they're heavier (or perhaps much heavier!) like Neurosis and Isis? More of a metal sound altogether? I'd check them on myspace but I'm at work!

Steven Wilson has worked with Opeth quite a bit, hasn't he? Collaboration and production work?

Opeth are the heaviest band I listen too.

Many of their songs are 10 minutes of sheer distortion and riffage with growling vocals on top, I could upload you a few tracks before you splash the cash on any albums if you want.

Anybody seen Opeth live? Impressions?

SW works a lot with them, doesn't he? Think this has reflected on PT's sound lately? I've read a few reviews that say the band has taken a harder edge to their style, starting with In Absentia, but especially Deadwing on...

Clunge
01-06-2007, 02:12 PM
I had the most awful dilemma with seeing Opeth, they were playing in Exeter only about 30 miles from where I live but on the same night I had tickets for Muse in Manchester :(.

If Opeth had of been supported by a band I liked, I would have gone to see them.

Mneme
01-06-2007, 02:19 PM
Here's a dilemma (hypothetical, of course!) for you:

If Opeth had been supported by Amplifier, what would you have done? :p

Clunge
01-06-2007, 02:22 PM
Well funnily enough, the big rumour going around was that Amplifier were going to support Opeth (and indeed they did on their European tour after their UK tour).

So yeah, if it had been Amplifier, I could have made a packet on my Muse ticket and seen Opeth and Amplifier .

Mneme
01-06-2007, 02:47 PM
Yes, it would have worked out quite nicely, and you prolly would have had plenty of cash left over for T-shirts from both bands!

Now that's a show I'd liked to have seen, Opeth + Amplifier! Talk about heavy...:p

After Blackwater Park, what would you suggest?

Clunge
01-06-2007, 03:02 PM
Well... it really depends on what aspect of Opeth you like:

Raw/aggressive heaviness: 'My Arms, Your Hearse'
Proggy: 'Ghost Reveries'
Plain brutal heaviness: 'Deliverance'
Withdrawn, acoustic: 'Damnation'

Another album of theirs 'Still Life' which preceeded Blackwater Park is a fab album too.

To be honest, you can't really go wrong, though I wouldn't dive into their earlier work ('Morningrise' and 'Orchid') until you've had a good listen to their 'best' work so to speak ;).

Mneme
01-06-2007, 03:34 PM
^Thanks as always, Clunge! Your recommendations are always full and informative! :)

Been looking at some reviews and pieces about the discography...just curious: how would you characterise "death metal vocals"? There's talk about growling and general heaviness, sometimes shouting...is that on the right track?

Clunge
01-06-2007, 04:02 PM
Hmm, death metal vocals are generally very harsh, guteral sounding - it's often hard to distinguish what the vocalist is 'singing' and are generally more of an atmospheric/brutality thing rather than proper vocals.

Opeth are an exception to some degree, as more than 50% of their music I'd say is sung with clean vocals like any other band, often switching between clean and growling each line.

DM vocals are an aquired taste for sure, it took me a year to get into Opeth because I simply thought the vocals were ridiculous and spoilt the music itself but now I'm increasingly drawn to DM style growls. They can range from very very very deep, dark growls to high, rasping screams and fit incredibly well into Opeth's music I'll tell you that.

There's really not much more I can say, you'll need to listen for yourself. Suffice to say, if you find the vocals impenetrable, you won't fare well with Opeth's heavier moments .

BW park is indeed an amazing album. I'm also a massive fan of Morningrise and Ghost Reveries, and Damnation is entirely melodic sounding, great for sleeping.

Oh and I saw them at the Academy in Manchester. Funnily enough Muse were playing the MEN the same night! Although by then I'd already made the decision to see Opeth anyway.

Blackwater Park is still my favourite. Even if it consisted of just Bleak, it would probably be my favourite. :D

Life aint that bad!

On October 28 at 9:20 AM my wife gave birth to our second daughter, Mirjam Ebba Maria Åkerfeldt. She is so beautiful, just looking at her brings me to tears!
Who'd known that I, a bum from the Stockholm suburbs would be the father of 2 beautiful daughters? Yes guys! I am happy!

On top of that the album is now written and the demos sound fantastic! We will start recording it tomorrow actually! I don't wanna say too much but....gee, it is so fucking good!! If I may say so myself....Expected "delivery date" on this one is sometime in April/May 08.

On top of that (2)...my friends at PRS guitars and Laney decided to give me some early Christmas gifts. I had a stunning PRS Hollowbody II delivered and it's just awesome! Real ear and eye candy! And from Laney I got the new Lionheart mini stack which sounds beyond fantastic! That rig will be used quite a lot in the studio I'm sure!

Yes, you can probably say the last few days have been pretty fucking decent!
Cheers guys!
Mike

Hell yeah :D.

My copy of the Roundhouse Tapes has finally appeared.
Highlights for me are "Under The Weeping Moon" and "The Night and the Silent Water" as I prefer them to the studio versions (as I've never liked the production on Opeth's first two records)

And Mikael keeps updating his Myspace:

Axe nailed the drums in 7 days which is just beyind me! The guy is amazing! He went up at 8 am every morning and started pounding the drums until 6-7 pm. Then he started practising again after dinner, we had to tell him to stop playing. He's truly outdone himself. Listening to the drumtracks alone makes me wanna bang my fucking head, but my stale old-mans neck prevents me. We're recording a total of 11 songs, 3 of them are covers that we're doing since we had some extra time, the rest are originals out of which I think we'll leave one off the album. Anyways, it's already my favourite Opeth record, but I'm a boasting cunt so...who cares? [...] Tomorrow we'll start setting the rhythm guitar sound and it will be exciting! Or something like that, maybe not that exciting after all....
[...]
I've also recorded some vox for a friend of mine who's doing a solo album. I'm not sure if I can say who it is yet, but I guess it might interest some of you guys.

New album info:

The new Opeth album is ****ing amazing. I can't even describe how much of a simultaneous leap forward and left turn it is. One thing it's not is More Ghost Reveries. It opens with an acoustic song featuring a female co-vocalist (the new drummer's girlfriend, Natasha something). There's another song (sorry, I don't know titles on any of 'em - don't even know if titles are final yet) that sounds like the Moody Blues with occasional outbursts of loud guitar. And the second track on the disc (there are seven in all, adding up to a 55-minute running time) has possibly the most aggressive death parts they've ever recorded, plus a piano interlude, insane rhythmic shifts and unbelievable drumming from Axenrot - the whole track is like one big "here I am, **** you" to anybody who's gonna bitch about Lopez's absence. Plus strings. Lots of strings on the album, and oboes, flutes, church organ and various other keyboard sounds. Seriously, it's such a melange of prog and symphonic rock styles and sonic touchstones, but at the same time it's heavy as **** when it wants to be.

Sounds absolutely fucking IMMENSE :D.

Swedish progressive metal titans OPETH have set "Watershed" as the title of their forthcoming album, due out on June 3 via Roadrunner Records (one day earlier internationally). The CD, recorded in the band's native Sweden and produced by frontman/guitarist Mikael Åkerfeldt and Jens Bogren, is a masterwork that follows the time-honored OPETH tradition; its modern yet timeless, progressive yet paying homage to the sounds of classic rock.

According to a press release, "Watershed" is truly one of those special records that cycles through a variety of moods, speeds and textures, complete with lots of subtleties and nuances of sound. Because of its expansive scope, "Watershed" is destined to land the album atop many "best-of" lists. Album opener "Coil" is a gorgeous acoustic number, featuring local folk vocalist Nathalie Lorichs, while "Heir Apparent" will knock listeners unconscious with its blunt force metal. Always one to defy the rules, OPETH posits sung vocals over artillery-like blast beats on "The Lotus Eater", cementing their reputation as innovators and redefiners.

"Watershed" combines elements of modern metal, prog rock, free jazz and hints of European folk music, all of which come together for a seamless, unique collection of songs that will leave an indelible mark upon all who listen.

The follow-up to 2005's "Ghost Reveries" is the first OPETH release to feature new guitarist Fredrik Åkesson and drummer Martin Axenrot and is the band's second effort for Roadrunner Records.

"Watershed" track listing:

01. Coil
02. Heir Apparent
03. The Lotus Eater
04. Burden
05. Porcelain Heart
06. Hessian Peel
07. Hex Omega

In a recent interview with Revolver magazine, Åkerfeldt stated about "Watershed", "The music is much more complex. The metal parts are even faster and a lot more technical than the last one. It's really hard to play some of this stuff. I mean, I wrote it and even I have trouble playing parts of it. I think it's going to be hard for some people to get into. It's definitely not a commercial-sounding record. The arrangements are exhausting. And it's much darker. Even the major patterns are very dark, while I think 'Ghost Reveries' had some light."

When asked if the songs were influences by anything musical, Mikael replied, I was hugely inspired by Scott Walker, who's an avant-garde artist and crooner. Last year he put out a record called 'The Drift', which is quite extreme and frightening, and it made a huge impact on me. Immediately, I wanted to do something like that. It just felt right. Also, with the situation the band has gone through over the last couple of years with the lineup changes, I just wanted it to be this way. I didn't want it to be a happy-sounding record."

YAYAYYAYAYY!

Awesome :D:D:D.
