[Sorry if this has been done]
I go through phases of listening to different artists lots, and then I move on then come back to them.
So, who are you listening to a fair bit at the moment?
I'm listening to:
Rufus Wainwright
Fiona Apple
Ed Harcourt
I love them all, and they're all the same sort of style in a way. I'd recommend them. They're easy going, yet also foot-tappingly good.
Ollie of Symmetry

The Hives

Uh huh. Most people only hear about the bands that get the most publicity. They don't take the time to look around for themselves. Go to lots of pub gigs or check out the scenes in other countries.

The australian music has been coming along pretty nicely in the last couple of years.

Depends on what you are looking for.
Er, good music?
Most of it really isn't that good. The only exceptions I can think of are Dragonforce, Ilya, The Go! Team and a few others. Nitin Sawhney's new album is supposed to be good too.
The current rock scene is...meh. There's a few gems like Compliments by Bloc Party and the established bands are sometimes producing good records but not many seem ot be at their peak.
Sure, if you look deep enough you'll found some good stuff. But that stuff isn't as good as the underground stuff that nobodies heard about from the past. Which is far more interesting and rewarding.

NIN's new album is horrifically bad.
QOTSA's new album is quite good, not as good as previous albums though.
The Arcade Fire's new single is alright I suppose.

DFA79 are not a novelty band & have been around a while. They took a great deal of influence from the Lightning Bolt, another two piece band that you would do worse than to find out about. & The Arcade Fire are one of the most beautiful bands. There really is no way to express how much you will love the album once you let it grow naturally on you.
& it really all does depend on what kind of music you are looking for as there is still very much something for everyone.

Meh, I just don't like them.
A couple of good bands that have come around in the past year or so:
The Butterfly Effect:
Tool esq metal. Possibly can be said to be in the gap between Tool and A Perfect Cricle
Cog:
Again, metal style, kinda. Rather imaginative.
Gyroscope and Something With numbers:
Punk rock with bits oof mainstream emo style, I guess. I like them. Not realy poppy like I may have just made them out to sound.
