Shame I can't hear it as my internet died. I think from what I've heard so far, this album is going to be 50/50, or I'll grow to really like/hate it. It's give or take atm.

But Rihanna on the album, really? REALLY???
Let's see what happens... I want to hear the studio version of "Charlie Brown" so bad... :D

According to Oracle, PoC sounds bettet with Rihanna. Hope so.
The Jay Z collab was good, hope this is good too.

Paradise is absolutely horrible. And the rest of the songs I've heard sounded decent at best. And Rihanna?? Ugh. So...boring and uninspired.
Edit: Didn't mean to direct that at you.

"Paradise" comes at a price that I am not prepared to pay on iTunes. :p
Bad wordplay, but probably still better than the lyrics to any of these new Coldplay songs.

 Poor Michael.
I'm pretty sure the whole pop-up album thing was inspired by Radiohead's newspaper album.
Listening to Paradise again, it sounds like some sort of parody - it makes all these big moves but gets them all slightly wrong. It's fun as long as you take it less seriously than the band does.

I like Paradise a little more than ETIAW, but it's far from the best song ever.

I've been listening to the song on repeat, it's catchy and I'm enjoying the synths more, but it's nothing from their best. I'm fine with that since I usually prefer the album tracks over the singles anyway.

I absolutely love the luscious synth sound, it sounds fantastic.
However, there's absolutely nothing else positive I can say about the song. The idea of the song is good, but the delivery of 'Para-Para-Paradise' just doesn't work and the lyrics are atrocious. If it had had a more Talk-esque chorus, I could have overlooked the verses but no, it just goes nowhere :(.
Still, looking forward to hearing the whole album. Haven't been impressed by much of it yet though except Hurts Like Heaven.

Okay, now I'm starting to get worried about the album. I liked the beginning and it got my hopes up but then the song started to sound like Coldplay covering Coldplay.
I'm not too worried. The other new songs like Hurts Like Heaven, Charlie Brown and Us Against the World sound great.

It sounds alright. I think it'll sound better when we hear the studio version.
Paradise is sounding better live, with Chris doing far more on the piano. No idea what it's doing closing the main set though. There's no build up or anything and it feels so anti-climatic - it really should be early on in the set. It still feels much weaker than the other new songs.
harrypottermegan
17-09-2011, 02:41 AM
It closed the main set? Yeah that does seem weird. I always imagined it as an opener of the show or encore.
They haven't played anything from X&Y yet....wonder if Fix You will be the only staple from it for this tour.
edit: Just looked up on last.fm and yeah Fix You has been the only song off X&Y played in 2011. It's not my favourite album, but it'd be good to have at least 2-3 songs from it. I'm sure they'll probably add some once they start touring for their own shows and not just festivals.
I'm not complaining about the lack of X&Y - it's easily their worst imo and is very samey and forgettable. It's a whole album of songs trying to sound like Clocks, most of which go for a few minutes too long. I'd like to see more Viva though - Strawberry Swing, Lovers in Japan, Death and all His Friends, Life in Technicolor ii and Chinese Sleep Chant all need to return.
harrypottermegan
17-09-2011, 03:28 AM
I'd like to see them introduce Talk but into the setlist every so often and maybe The Hardest Part with the Postcards From Far Away outro, I really liked when they played that last tour.
And yeah more Viva, I agree. I think they should swap Lost out of the setlist with any of the songs that you mentioned because Lost is probably my least favourite song on the album, it's so bland.
I'm glad they play a good length set at their own shows, about 24 songs, which means we'll probably get those additions.

So, after a display of loads of good songs, we get Paradise... and I'm unimprssed. Feels weak. Up In Flames didn't sound too impressive either - Chris's refrain sounded weedy and irritating. We know there's goods songs on it so I'm not worried, but still...
Plus we've got Rihanna coming - so in terms of major artist LP guest spots for the year it's above R.E.M. but way below Foo Fighters.
It also brings me back to my final point about the musical direction COldplay - Rihanna and Jay-Z as guests indicates a leaning of RnB, and there's some evidence of RnB infusion in Paradise. Now I'm one of those who likes X&Y as an album,, and I think it's largely because there's a good sense of prog present in some of the tracks - I have heard Talk live in it's techno version but would to see it returned in it's studio form. There is stuff like Square One and White Shadows which hint that Coldplay could go that way and be even better and brilliant - there's soem evidence on AROBTTH as well, but very buried... but no it's this RnB craze whih even seem to have drawn Muse in, even though they could be brilliant in that genre. I'd just like one band to go in the prog direction, or at the very least ignore the siren call of RnB.
As for setlists, I'll draw up perfect setlist for the thread once I've given Mylo Xyloto a spin, but for now I'm thinking in the current festival setlist I'd like to see Violet Hill and GPASUMF dropped and Lovers or Hardest Part thrown in and Talk as well. Add a couple of songs for their own shows and you can throw in a few more new ones plus an album track or two (at the moment I'd love to hear Amsterdam).
Or, you know, they could play the good songs from X&Y. White Shadows and Low, please.
Do agree with more Viva though, Strawberry Swing and Lovers In Japan are sorely missed.
White Shadows and Low would have been much better if they weren't so needlessly long - like most X&Y songs. White Shadows shouldn't take two minutes to get to the chorus!
sprocketeer
18-09-2011, 06:37 AM
I think White Shadows is the best song on X&Y.
Low, on the other hand, needs to end 2 minutes earlier than it actually does. In fact, it's a total filler track that could have been a B-side. I've always liked X&Y (better than Viva and WAY better than what we've heard of Mylo) but it has a lot of needless filler.

I like all the songs on X&Y, the problem is they all sound so similar and drag on a bit too long. And compared to the other albums there's no real standout tracks. The album just seems to flow with a constant amount of goodness and that can get boring after awhile.

Exactly why I don't really like it much. My favourite track from it is easily Til Kingdom Come because it's a breath of fresh air and also one of the best tunes on the album.
Also, I'd forgotten how good Chinese Sleep Chant was.

That's why it's a good album, Coldplay really shouldn't ignore it (with the exception of Fix You) in their live shows, we have Muse for that with Showbiz (the album not the song)
X&Y isn't at all 'prog rock'. It's consistent in that it's consistently mediocre compared to their albums. It's a album of songs that all sound the same and go for a minute too long each. The Hardest Part is also amongst the worst things they've ever done (though the solo version's nice). Their other albums are consistent in quality too - the highs are just much, much, higher and so are the lows even.
While there's some hip-hop/RnB influences on Mylo Xyloto, it really only seems to be in Paradise and Princess of China from what we've heard. Muse haven't 'given in' to RnB either - UD (which is terrible) and SMBH (decent) are the only tracks they've been influenced by RnB on. Coldplay and Muse, while they may have minor prog rock influences (Muse especially) have never done anything that falls under prog rock and most likely never will.

I hated The Hardest Part until they turned it on its head with the piano in Viva's live shows, then it suddenly became beautiful. Can't say the same about that Talk techno mix, though. Didn't like that one bit.
The X&Y tracks I'm not fond of are What If, Low, The Hardest Part, and Twisted Logic. All of those blend together and fail to stand out. Take those out, though, and you're left with 9 decent-or-better tracks. X&Y is actually over an hour long, and simply turning 2 or more of its tracks into B-sides would have improved it. X&Y actually has some great B-sides in general. Gravity beats almost every Coldplay song written since.
Hate to say it, but Viva has NOT aged well. Only 2 or 3 of its tracks still really resonate with me. (I still insist the acoustic version of Lost! absolutely shits on the song's bazillion other versions)

So happy with an Ahoy date :) Muse in Nijmegen was (even though I went) too far to travel. It was well worth it.
Arcade Fire was on a schoolday in Amsterdam and although the journey was sort of lengthy, it was also worth it.

I'm with you re: the new stuff. In fact I only like their first two albums but everything since has been disappointing.
Track lengths (http://www.allmusic.com/album/mylo-xyloto-r2272103)
seems Mylo Xyloto, M.M.I.X. and A Hopeful Transmission are all interludes so there's really only U.F.O., Don't Let It Break Your Heart and Up With The Birds that we haven't heard yet. There's also no good quality versions of Princess of China out there and they don't have Rihanna on them either.
Also here's a track-by-track summary from Chris (http://www.musicweek.com/story.asp?sectioncode=2&storycode=1046690&c=1) and a review from a fan who was at the listening party (http://www.austingirlmusicguide.com/2011/09/19/special-edition-review-coldplays-upcoming-mylo-xyloto/).

^ I'm all for a good joke, but that wasn't even remotely funny. :/
Coldplay tickets are always ridiculously expensive no matter where you are in the world. On the Viva tour here in North America, it was $125 with fees for most tickets, and a lot of times that didn't even get you a good seat (and a lot of those shows were in arenas where every floor seat was assigned and the floor had chairs put out, thus no GA section). A disappointing album isn't gonna coax me into paying those prices again.

$100 for standing? Standing was equal to or more expensive than $130 (I only didn't get it because it sold out too quickly:'(. The lowest price for anything was $119. IIRC

Hmm maybe it was over $100, you're probably right. I know that seats were definitely $130 because that's what I paid. And yeah I was gonna stand too but didn't get in time to get GA tickets. :(
But anyway I'd still probably see Coldplay even though the tickets will be 100+, I'd go standing though.

Other continents are probably different, but I can say that Muse played the same venues as Coldplay here in North America on each of their most recent tours, and Muse was MUCH cheaper. $75 with fees vs. $125, and like I said, Coldplay had assigned chairs on the floor where Muse had all-standing areas. I don't predict this coming tour's prices being any less. Not to mention if Coldplay starts playing stadiums outside Europe, that would only increase the cost more.
I'm probably gonna stick with seeing Coldplay at festivals, especially since I have other bands worth my money/time there.

No idea. You could try emailing the venue about it.
And about their own show vs festival, I'd definitely see them at a festival rather then their own concert if they did another festival in Australia for cost reasons, but I doubt they will. So their own show is my only chance.
I just checked out the prices from their last Australian tour and they ranged from $110 for standing to $140 for gold seating, so about the same as Muse. I'd imagine they'll stay around that price for this tour because I don't think they'll expect people to fork out $150+. At least I hope not.
And what, seats in GA - that's shit. Hopefully when they come here you can actually stand...
I'd much rather see them at their own show - they'd be playing for longer and festivals here seem to either have shit lineups or are ridiculously overpriced - sometimes even both.

So Princess of China is out (leaked I think, it was supposed to be premiered on radio tomorrow?)
It's alright I guess. Better than Paradise I guess. It'd be better if they used the 'I could have been a Princess' bit as the chorus, that's great but it only happens once. The structure feels odd, there's a few verses, then the chorus bit then it goes straight into an outro.
Rihanna's vocals don't really work with it though I think.

Gave it another listen...yeah I'm really not feeling it. It just sounds so mediocre.
With each new song being released off MX my expectations are becoming lower and lower. So far my favourite songs that have studio versions have been Moving To Mars and Major Minus. ETIAW and Paradise aren't as good, but still good enough. PoC is just bland and I still maintain the fact that Rihanna's vocals add nothing to the song. And I'm not saying that because I don't like her, I just don't see why she's in the song....
Oh well, I'm not too bothered.

I hate everything Rihanna does and I am such a massive critic of all her songs, but this song is extremely brilliant and I think Coldplay have actually done very well on this song.
Why do I get vibes of 'Eternally Missed' listening to this? I can't believe I'm gonna say this, but FINALLY something with Rhianna involved I like! It's not bad at all. I actually love 'Paradise' and this isn't as good by any means, but it's much better than 'ETIAW' which is just so bland and awful. This is going to be one very mixed reaction album for sure for me personally.

Great news! Turns out the tracks we had before the leak were just the mediocre tracks of the album. I've been listening to this album nonstop since I downloaded it from Waffles and I enjoy this very much. Definitely better than Viva for sure.
Unfortunately, Paradise, Major Minus + Princess of China still stick out like sore thumbs and they kill the flow of the album
Haven't listened to it yet, but I'm hoping this guy's right. (About the first part)
so it leaks just as I'm about to go to sleep
why couldn't it be earlier? I wanted some sleep.
I'm really excited for Don't Let it Break Your Heart - it's been compared to Where the Streets Have No Name and it's supposed to be anthemic or something. Can't wait to hear it all.
Mylo Xyloto: this sounds way better than the live version, very beautiful!
Hurts Like Heaven: where are the guitars at first? the vocal effects kinda get in the road but apart from that it's still a fantastic song
Paradise: still as mediocre as ever
Charlie Brown: not much different from the live version but Chris's vocal is a bit odd. good song still!
Us Against the World: ooh new intro! as beautiful as ever, the build up sounds even better
M.M.I.X.: why does this exist? (I mean I know the answer is 'Eno' but still...)
Every Teardrop is a Waterfall: I've come to like it a bit more, it's quite silly but it's a fun summery anthem
Major Minus: heard it before but I still wish it was a bit more intense? like the live version. still decent I guess - the album drastically needed something minor key at this point
U.F.O.: first unheard song! the acoustic guitar's nice and the strings are beautiful. short and sweet. I like the chord progression
Princess of China: meh as I've said. could have been good, just Rihanna's voice really doesn't work with Chris's and the structure of the song is terrible.
Up in Flames: quite nice, the piano and melody are beautiful and the minimalist drum beat works well. predictable buildup with a great guitar line and strings but it works well so I don't mind. feels a bit short though.
A Hopeful Transmission: ooh this is nice despite being only an interlude.
Don't Let it Break Your Heart: wow! this is great! future single for sure. I love it, feels really anthemic. why does it end so soon though? it's building up to a finale and then just stops. kinda ruins it.
Up with the Birds: what is this? the melody's pretty weak and the production's odd. then the guitar comes in and it's a bit better but still has a weird vibe to it.
overall 7/10 or so
second worst album, better than X&Y
Charlie Brown.
That is all.

Much better than I was expecting! Pleasantly surprised!
Mylo Xyloto : Pretty start.
Hurts Like Heaven: I liked the start, but I’m afraid that this is a great song ruined by bad production. 6/10
Paradise : Still quite good, but nothing special for me. 7/10
Charlie Brown : High voices at the start are just annoying. Ahh but then it’s the riff and it’s lovely and it is a really good, if conventional, Coldplay song. 8/10
Us Against the World : Really a lovely song. It starts off subtle and intimate, and then the build up is just terrific. 8/10
M.M.I.X : Pointless Eno wankery.
Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall : Still shit. 2/10
Major Minus : It works better on the album then it did off it. Actually enjoyed it. 7/10
U.F.O : Ahh lovely. A much needed softer turn, and the strings were perfect. Though it’s no Faust Arp. 8/10
Princess Of China : Everyone seems to love this. I don’t. The worst thing Coldplay have done. And not because of Rhianna. 2/10
Up In Flames : Liked the minimalist feel, and a really good, emotive melody. I was singing along! 8/10
A Hopeful Transmisson : Nice.
Don’t Let It Break Your Heart : Loved the moment when this suddenly crashed in! It wasn’t as good as I thought it was going to be though. 6/10
Up With The Birds : Nice start, I like the breathing every so often. Ooh, but then weird strings make it a bit more odd. I like it. And then the rest of the band comes in and it’s a lovely end. 8/10
Dominic.

Well, EMI claims this isn't the final version of the album, which kinda makes me happy. A better mix might just make this a lot better. Anyhow, beautiful piece, Charlie Brown and U.F.O. are the two master pieces on this record.

Coldplay keeps getting worse.
Hurts Like Heaven- Terrible, tied for worst song.
Paradise- Not really a fan, but sounds better in contrast with the previous song.
Charlie Brown- Finally, a good song! I like it.
Us Against the World- Another good song, yay! Really relaxing.
Every Teardrop is a Waterfall- Meh. Annoying.
Major Minus- I like the music but the vocals are just annoying.
U.F.O. - Another good song, nice and simple.
Princess of China - Tied for worst song. Wtaf is this crap?
Up in Flames - Not a bad song, but it's just ok. Kind of catchy.
Don't Let it Break Your Heart - Probably the best out of the "upbeat" songs. Still just ok.
Up With the Birds - My favorite on the album, especially the quiet part with the strings.
Overall, very disappointing album. Too much synth, and annoying/bland vocals. The only songs that I like are the ones that stick to the simple classic Coldplay formula of guitar/piano and heart-felt vocals. Also, too many interludes.
5/10

the new video is so goofy

Mylo Xyloto: A nice little start to the album.
Hurts Like Heaven: Don't go much on the vocal effects, but still a great song and a possible single. 7/10
Paradise: Is much better in the context of the album rather than as a separate track, still bland to me. 4/10
Charlie Brown: One of the highlights. The vocals on the album version again, not as good as they could be. 8/10
Us Against The World: Brilliant. Absolutely beautiful. 9/10
M.M.I.X: Not a lot of point in its existence other than an intro.
Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall: I'm on the fence with this one. I have been ever since its release. It will be, and already is, one for the crowd at live shows though. 6/10
Major Minus: A much needed bit of rock on an album that lacks much edge, but needs more intensity. I'm a fan of the vocal style for this. 7/10
U.F.O: Incredible. My favourite from the album. Very old styled Coldplay. Flawless apart from its short length. 9.5/10
Princess of China: It's okay. Rihanna's part doesn't sound right to me, however decent her singing is in the track. The live version is much better. 5/10
Up In Flames: Could have done with a slightly more complex drum beat, whilst still being minimalist. Other than that, a great song. 8.5/10
A Hopeful Transmission: A reprise of MX, nothing special.
Don't Let It Break Your Heart: Doesn't do much for me, it is almost a wall of sound at some points and the vocals are masked for a fair bit of it. 4.5/10
Up With The Birds: Really good. Influences from operatic, musical type songs come to the surface, but Coldplay pull it off well. 8/10
Listening to VLV again.
It's got some really good songs on it, it's pretty disappointing how weak Mylo Xyloto is in comparison. Nothing really compares to Strawberry Swing, Lovers in Japan, Chinese Sleep Chant or Death and all His Friends.

I thought the Paradise video could have been ok up until the unicycling bit
Killer Rabbit
20-10-2011, 12:32 PM
I liked the video for "Paradise". I'm glad they went light-hearted with it, instead of darker (which, I thought they would do).
The only complaints I have about it are:
1) I wish Chris hadn't taken off the elephant head during the unicycling bit (even though his quick breather was a little funny) because it took me out of the story the video was telling.
2) Guy's costume is an ASAIN elephant, in AFRICA (you can tell by the ears).
3) Will and Guy's costumes don't have tusks. Male elephants have tusks.
Also, I think Mylo Xyloto is a pretty damn good album. I was hesitant going into listening it, but I really, really enjoy it. Say what you will about "Princess Of China", but I think it's a beautiful song. I myself wasn't sure about Rhianna being on a Coldplay song, but it's an interesting combination.
I can understand how some people were expecting something different (and are disappointed), but I think the album is excellent and the music is great.

Hurts Like Heaven is decent, as is Charlie Brown until the cringeworthy ALL THE BOYS part. Every Teardrop could have been the highlight of the album if Chris Martin knew when to shut up. I like Princess Of China, 'specially the It's No Good style intro. Major Minus could have been much better. The rest is utter shit. Especially the "acoustic" tracks which some of the dullest music I've ever listened to. I'd give the album a 3/10.

I will say Paradise has grown on me more in context to the rest of the album. And the Princess of China with Rihanna wasn't as bad as I thought it would.
Overall: 6.5/10

I listen to the radio quite a bit. They've been playing a lot of these new Coldplay songs and they all sound very radio friendly. I'm afraid we'll be drowned in Coldplay hits for at least a year. On the first listen now, it sounds like a promising album. I don't have a full opinion of it yet but from what I've heard I think I'll end up liking it.
Good to see some acoustic tracks like UFO and Us Against The World featuring. I'm still annoyed by the vocal effects on Hurts Like Heaven, but otherwise I really enjoy that. And I think PoC sounds a lot better within the context of the album rather than a stand alone track. Still not too fond of the Rihanna part though. My only other criticism so far is with MX and MMIX, I would have preferred if they were just part of HLH and ETIAW, rather than their own songs.
Still disappointed about Moving Up To Mars not featuring, I think it'd work really well on the album and it sounds better than some of the tracks so far.

Difference is that Achtung Baby is actually a good album and a huge change of direction for U2.
Songs I'm still listening to from this era
Mylo Xyloto/Hurts Like Heaven

You've got to give EMI credit, I can't find any videos on YT to link to people for their opinions that haven't been pitch modified.
Also I'm really impressed by Hurts Like Heaven (and the MX introduction into it) - it's quite a fun song and there's a lot of intricate details throughout. Charlie Brown is of course solid, and I really like Up in Flames. Its minimalist, sparse approach worked really well. Paradise is, as everyone said, better within the album context but it's still a bit average - not a great single choice. The middle section I'm not all that impressed by so far. Moving to Mars should have been on this album. And yes I know my perspective is extremely unique :p

Yeah I agree with all of this.
I'm a bit disappointed in U.F.O., it has so much potential to be a great song but the entire time it just meanders and doesn't seem to go anywhere. The transition from U.F.O. into PoC is weird, going from an acoustic track to a track with probably the most synth on the album.
Us Against The World and Up In Flames have really grown on me, still haven't got round to listening to Don't Let It Break Your Heart and Up With The Birds but so far I'm impressed with the album. I'd probably place the albums:
1. A Rush Of Blood To The Head
2. Parachutes
3. Viva La Vida
4. Mylo Xyloto
5. X&Y
MX and X&Y are pretty close for the bottom spot, but I'll just go with that order for now because I've really been turned off X&Y lately.

Words cannot describe my immense disappointment and hatred for this album. They've lost me. Completely lost me. They began losing me with Viva but I still saw enough redeeming qualities in them to stick with them. Those qualities are pretty much gone except for maybe 2 or 3 tracks on the album, which don't make up for the other 11. "Princess of China" is so despicable that it's actually exceeds my hatred for ETIAW and "Paradise". And no, Rihanna is not the only reason it's horrible. It would be an awful song even without her.
"Charlie Brown" is the only effective pure pop effort on here, while "Us Against the World" compares quite nicely to Coldplay's best acoustic tracks of old. And I guess "Up With the Birds" is okay. Other than that...total trainwreck. They've embraced every bad habit of the modern pop industry just to fit in, from electronic vocal modification to messy collaborations to shadowing the band's actual instruments behind noise to that fucking beat in "Up in Flames" that kills what might otherwise be a good song. I'll see these guys at festivals but I'm done paying for their own arena/stadium shows.

Actually, the gig I'm going to is comparable to the Casino de Paris gig Muse gave in May last year: to attend it, you have to win your tickets, as none are being on sale (and some contests to win the tickets were identical to the ones for Muse at Casino de Paris). And apparently, the maximum capacity of the venue is a bit less than 1 500 people.

...is wheelhouse Coldplay, as is Martin's unfortunate tendency to stretch out syllables for rhymes that really aren't worth saving. But its power has little to do with whatever Martin's going on about (dreaming of paradise, mostly)
Made me laugh.

Coldplay is one of my two favourite bands of all time (the other, of course, is Muse). I was pretty disappointed in MX on the first listen (but then again, I was disappointed in VLV on the first listen to and now it's my second favourite Coldplay album after AROBTTH) but it's growing on me.
I'm really loving Us Against the World and Up With the Birds, mostly because they feel like old Coldplay to me (what can I say, I don't deal well with change) and are just beautifully constructed, and I also like Up in Flames and U.F.O. quite a bit. I'm enjoying Don't Let It Break Your Heart - it's got a nice signature Coldplay sound that has signs of the Mylo Xyloto-era Coldplay as well. Charlie Brown's really growing on me - I didn't like it that much upon first listen but now I think it's a great track. I didn't like Every Teardrop is a Waterfall or Paradise when they were first released as singles but they're growing on me quite a bit on each listen. Hurts Like Heaven is catchy too though I don't particularly love it. Princess of China isn't terrible or anything, but it just doesn't sound like Coldplay to me and I really don't like collaborations on albums. Major Minus DOES sound like Coldplay but I would have preferred Moving to Mars over Major Minus on the album.
While the album's growing on me, I have to say that I miss AROBTTH-era Coldplay and even VLV-era Coldplay.

Yeah I was a bit disappointed too...Mylo Xyloto is definately their worst album (not the entire album is bad) but ...too much voice effects and sound and... RIHANNA (arg)
But I saw them in Madrid last week, and well... the show was AMAZING and songs I didn't like such as "Hurst like heaven"and"Up in flames" sounded really great so...I guess I'll have to listen to the album again and try to appreciate it like Viva la Vida (I hated the album at first and now I think it's a pretty awesome one)
Oh btw tonight's gig in Paris is broadcasted live on Dailymotion http://www.dailymotion.com/sas/coldplay

I'm actually listening to VLV for the first time in probably about 18 months today. It really isn't bad at all, a few missteps with some rather disappointingly lame transitions (the last part of Strawberry Swing aaargh. Such a letdown after such a promising opening)/dodgy lyrics aside. It has some absolute crackers - LiT opening, 42, Chinese Sleep Chant (which is legitimately brilliant), The Escapist.
Production needed work, though. Give the drums/bass some kick!
Even so, not a patch on their early work... a single track like Everything's Not Lost would make an album worth the money on its own regardless of the rest.

Everything's Not Lost is alright but Strawberry Swing is far far better. If you mean the bridge in Strawberry Swing is bad I'm not sure what you're on about? That really takes it from good to great.

I'd completely disagree with that, I just really dislike most of Parachutes - Coldplay aren't exactly great songwriters and Chris Martin has a rather ordinary voice so they can't really pull off the bare-bones acoustic balladry of Sparks/We Never Change, and often fall into the trap of being overly repetitive when they attempt to develop on that - as in Everything's Not Lost and to an extent, Trouble. Shiver is cringeworthy and doesn't have a hook that fails to irritate. High Speed, Spies and Don't Panic are great though, even if High Speed is just OK Computer by numbers.
I can see why our views differ though - seeing as I got into Coldplay with A Rush Of Blood To The Head and later X&Y and Viva La Vida when it came out, I've just come to expect a more "developed" (for lack of a better word) sound from them - a bigger, more bombastic sound.
also VLV? Synth-pop? Really? Where?

Yeah VLV =/= synthpop with the exception of the title track, really. LiT and The Escapist are more in the genuine electronic mode (which makes sense given that it was actually co-written with an electronic artist).
But I absolutely love Parachutes. The aesthetic, really easy-going, laid-back, unassuming, straightforward really appeals to me. Even the rawness of Chris Martin's voice I like.

I don't rate Everything Is Not Lost too highly either. It's good, but far from their best. But this is coming from someone who thinks Viva la Vida is their best and most consistent album.

I really enjoy X&Y (probably because my Dad played it repeatedly and it was the tour I saw them on), although The Hardest Part is still a pretty weak track.
Parachutes is alright, it has some great tracks and some others that would be quite nice if Chris's voice was better suited to them. I love Don't Panic and Shiver (that guitar riff <3) and Yellow is a great pop song. I quite like Spies, Everything's Not Lost (even if it goes a tad too long, especially live) and Trouble.
I really don't know how anything on VLV is synthpop? They sampled this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bazz7A_tD0g) for Life in Technicolor and The Escapist (would have been much nicer if they'd just composed their own electronic intro or something I think, but it is a fantastic piece) but that's the only place where synths are very prominent at all? It's definitely their best album imo, just edging out A Rush of Blood to the Head.

Never heard it, I shall have to find it.
Parachutes keeps coming on after playthroughs of Mylo Xyloto: reminds me how good it actually is (and firmly plants it in my mind as their second best album - ahead of VLV), and reminds me of seeing the Don't Panic video with the submerged house on TV when I was 5/6.

And A Rush of Blood to the Head. There's a few average/ok songs on that album (Warning Sign, Daylight, A Whisper) but the rest of the songs make up for it.
I've also recently checked out How you See the World - I think it's decent, although my brother didn't like it live.

I agree with almost all of this, especially the comment on Rush of Blood. Yeah, there's some rather dodgy songs there and they're probably weaker than the weakest of VLV, but good god the highs are high. The first half, and the last two. Especially the last two.

I don't get why people don't like Warning Sign that much. I love it - one of my favourites off AROBTTH.

Viva la Vida was interesting at least, albeit not remotely original. Mylo Xyloto is unoriginal AND boring, with weak ideas and weak execution.
