Yep, I like Godspeed You Black Emperor! very muchly. I've got all their albums except Yanqui UXO and they're very good, epsecially Lift Yr Skinny Fists (the one with Storm). Another great band that's similar to Godspeed is Explosions in the Sky. I'd recommend them to anyone who is a fan of beautiful guitar music.

I like what I've heard. They have some amazing stuff.
Also love Explosions in the Sky.

Our band gets compared to GYBE a good bit, but I can never figure out why...
definitely a live show thing, but I'm still not sure why the comparsion.

Sarah
14-04-2005, 05:45 PM
Are you in a post rock band, then?

xush
14-04-2005, 05:50 PM
no, that's the weird part. We're not really like that at all.
I love that kind of stuff, but I just don't see the connection.
We get "dead can dance" a lot too, that makes a little more sense, but still... I dunno.

I'm really hoping we can channel some Muse into our next CD. I just saw them in ATL (my first time) and I love their blend of influences. My band is really into progressive stuff like Rush and Yes and King Crimson, but I like how Muse seems to take progressive stylings and infuse them into a more contemporary sound. I found the show REALLY inspiring, I'd even love to work a Muse cover into our sets now.

we've got a few tunes here;

I think Skinny Fists is a better starting place than F#A#?

Skinny Fists, btw translates to vinyl really well, each song has it's own side!!

Bakesh
16-04-2005, 06:58 AM
GYBE is great except for being on the really pretentious side, imo. I love the music that is like, just straight music, and seems to last forever and seems like a soundtrack to an unmade movie.

The line from I think "East Hastings" has stuck with me for some reason:
'They have a large barge with a radio antenna tower on it, so that they would charge up the discharge'.....just sounds so eery and haunting....i think about hulking, quiet barges floating on the river at night, and just making a mellow rumbling noise. Then thinking they're up to no good.....like something out of a sci-fi movie. really. no i'm serious.....stop staring at me :$

As for the other songs, they're pretty great too, for what they are. I once put Providence in my cousin's stereo and fastforwarded some to the first rising action in the song, and we could feel it in our chests and between our ears, the vibrations were intense with it turned up REALLY loud.

Overall, this is probably the best 'post rock' band around, even though i think some of the sounds 'Explosions in the Sky' produces are more beautiful. I think the difference in the two bands is that EitS slows down and speeds up suddenly and for no real reason (which fits their name beautifully), while GYBE will gradually lead into the heavy rock part of a song, then take it down a notch with a few new sounds, and somehow, introduce a whole new sound in the same song, and it just fits wonderfuly.

Sleep.

More specifically, The Third Part.

That is all.

seriously, I do believe the last 6 or so minutes of that track are some of the greatest in music EVER. And everyone remembers the first time they heard GY!BE.
My first time...I started listening to 'The Dead Flag Blues', curious about this band I'd heard mentioned once or twice before...the band's name conjured up an image of a politically driven hardcore band, or maybe a metal band of some sort...but the strange album title and the dark, gloomy picture on the album cover...they couldn't be...

then it came in, looming...the dark, heavy voice threw me...the monologue evoked a similar but slightly more apocalyptic vision of the view from my sister's house...then that guitar came in, panning across some ancient monochrome photo of the old mid-west in America in my mind...

then the violins, weeping for the dead and gone...

then a ghost train, old as time...far away...soon enough, it was roaring by, all white flames and screaming souls trapped in a memory...

before the shadows of two cowboys emerged, soundtracked by Morricone channeled through a solemn but hopeful gang of Montreal slackers...they drew...and soon enough, one sent the other off to another plain...then he turned to the sunset, and wandered on...

and then the sun broke through the clouds outside my window, glittering through the raindrops hanging on the glass...

ahhh...

Yeah, sorry about that.

and don't go calling them pretentious! Pretentious is acting like you have talent when you don't, dressing something lesser and derivative in the emperor's new clothes or whatever. The music easily lives up to the titles.

Sleep is one of the best things I've ever heard. They were a great bandIt hasn't officially split. There is no word at all really on whether or not it'll ever do anything again. ASMZ is coming to the end of touring and most of GY!BE is in there, so we must cling to the faithful hope that they will release another album.

I guess they're very conscious of the fact they're now so famous that if they released another record it'd probably be in the NME or something like that and get a massive rating and then the press starts raving about it and constellation can't keep up with orders and the band becomes more in the limelight. Which they don't want, the creepy canadians.

The best GYBE album for me is Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antenna to Heaven. It's so damn peaceful and so wonderfully crafted. Storm is the standout track on there. I listened to it as I went over the Alps on a plane to Italy, and it really did add to the view, as it was reaching the crescendo.

I'm really digging 09-15-00 now, most of the time I can tell straight away whether I really like a Godspeed track, but this has slowly crept up on me and is fast becoming my favourite. Yanqui U.X.O itself is a great album, I don't think there's a bad track on there; it's there most powerful, epic album, for me.

I saw A Silver Mt Zion play live at Colchester Arts Centre in....ooh, I think it was April, and I'm so glad I did. Efrim has such a lovely voice, slightly discordant and clumsy, but beautiful. I'm pretty sure I had some form of orgasm at that concert.

They've split :(

Godspeed You Black Emperor have announced their split. The Montreal post-rock innovators have called it a day, but not for the reasons of 'musical differences' cited by many retiring bands.

Instead, founder Efrin Menuck declared that the band had become untenable due to "an existential freakout" relating to the Iraq war: "The last American tour that Godspeed did was in the run up to the current war in Iraq. For what Godspeed did, it was very difficult for us to work out a way to communicate directly with the audience about what was going on."

He continued: "We could talk to people after the shows, or we could make announcements from the stage, but so much what Godspeed was, was one-way communication, and I had an existential freakout about that, that those tactics aren't valid anymore.

"People didn't need a rock band pointing in the direction of (how the world was at that point). Maybe what they needed is some clumsy words, a presentation that was a little more human."

What a bunch of pretencious cunts, though.

Lift Your Skinny Fists... I'd recommend. It was my first GY!BE album, and it's one of my all time favourites.

Yanqui U.X.O. > F#A#oo > Lift Your Skinny Fists (but Lift... has 'Sleep', which is the best thing they ever composed)

If we're including EPs, I think Slow Riot for New Zerĝ Kanada is better than all three. Also make sure you listen to A Silver Mt. Zion, HRSTA and the other spin-off bands. They all sound different but they have similar approaches to music because of the common band members.

I would assume, if you're 18, that, like myself, you've never actually been to a live show of theirs before, considering they haven't played live for years?

A live CD/track is completely different to actually being there, they really aren't all that comparable.

Ah! Maybe Moya actually.... They definitely played something between Lift Yr Skinny Fists and Providence, which could have been an incredibly heavy version of Moya. Not sure. And the intro probably counts as a new/unreleased song! It was certainly long enough to be a song.

Hope Drone
Albanian
Lift Yr. Skinny Antennas To Heaven/Gathering Storm/Il Pleut a Mourir (+ Clatters Like Worry)
Moya
Providence [Dead Metheny]
Rockets Fall on Rocket Falls
Chart #3/World Police and Friendly Fire
East Hastings [The Sad Mafioso]

EDIT: But i'm adding "Il Pleut a Mourir (+ Clatters Like Worry)" as they definitely played all of it!
EDIT2: I'll specify which sections of Providence and East Hastings.

Personally, I listened to F#A#∞ first and it was a slow burner, which is now (just) my favourite. But I think Lift Your Skinny Fists, especially the first disc, is the most immediate and awe inspiring album, and the one i'd play first to anyone who wanted to try them - preferably tipsy at night in a darkened room, but that's just me! F#A#∞ is stripped back, post-apocalyptic and bleak, whilst Lift Your Skinny Fists is huge, distorted and sonically magical. I'd recommend those two first in any order, then if you like them to move onto the Slow Riot For Zero Kanada EP, and Yanqui U.X.O. ( - which is the only one i've never fully got into myself, although i'm sure someone will disagree!).

Yanqui is definitely the worst album, albeit it's still good. Naturally, some people disagree, but I think the general opinion is this.

Basically, you just need to make some time to listen to this. The albums and songs are long. Put Skinny fists on and lie down and listen. Smoke a joint, if you feel inclined (works so well). After that you get it or not.

Holy fuck, im amazed. I think the best way to describe it is like listening to a nightmare about apocalypse. Not only was the music so relaxing, it was probably some of the most terrifying music I've ever heard (and I am rarely ever "freaked out" from music.)It sounds like the kind of music you'd hear after an apocalypse where you walk outside to find everything ruined all around you, a depressing kind of sound. Truely one of the greatest musical expirences I've heard

"We're trapped in the belly of this horrible machine, and the machine is bleeding to death".

Agreed. I read that they are working on a new album (http://www.voir.ca/blogs/nouvelles_musique/archive/2011/05/27/godspeed-pr-233-pare-un-nouveau-disque.aspx), so we might not have to wait too long to hear some new material from them.

I saw them twice at their ATP festival in December. The first performance of the weekend was the better of the two, but I was kind of hoping they would be playing newer material instead of trudging out the old compositions. It was great to hear Sleep, Moya and BBF3, though! I might be going to see them again on Monday when they play in Leeds, so I hope they have added some new material since I last saw them.

Has anyone listened to Efrim's solo album?
