I don't mind the streets, songs tend to sound the same.

Mike Skinner makes me laugh

the songs are a little samey, but i love the way he alters his voice for different songs to sound like someone else..

erm....he's.....erm yeah.
I suppose he's a scally whose decided to do something constructive, good on him. I really actually do like a few of his CHUNES, infact i was hyping him to my friends a couple of years back.
'Your fit, but you know it' is a good song, similar to 'Don't mug yourself' but funnier. I'll probably end up buying the new album because I'm a CD whore :o

That's pretty much the way they're seen over here, which I think is a real shame. Obviously what they do has a lot of humor and iron in it, but to see the artist himself (or is it 'the artists themselves?' I'm never entirely sure whether to refer to the streets as plural or singular) as a joke isn't fair. I think he's quite witty and talented. He's certainly not like most rappers, and he comes across as earnestly trying to do something different. If only his shows in the US weren't 18+. :indiff:

The songs do have a lot of humour in them, but they are very well written, and the lyrics are excellent. And there's usually a serious subject within the humour as well.

No. You don't like them in a comical way and then borrow their bassist.

The Streets is absolute genius, the lyrics are just great, none of this pretentious wank crap, just real-life feelings. The music and rapping isn't exactly the best, but it works somehow.

Don't be rediculous. I'm not going to get at you for not liking The Streets, but don't pass them off as being a joke or..'not proper music' or whatever you said. Just open your eyes a little- Mike Skinner is a very talented musician.

My point was that The Streets are respected by many great musicians out there. So for you to come along and call them 'as good as S club 7' or whatever (it pained me to write that) is nothing short of obsene. I'm not gonna slate you for not liking the Streets, in fact I'm not a huge fan myself, but your comments show that you have a lot to learn about music. Just please, please never go into music journalism.
I'll let you off though, as you're (clearly) only a littlun.

I liked original pirate material a lot - my brother and ex-boyfriend got me listening to them a lot. I was disappointed with the new album but there are a few good tunes on there.
However, I like them on CD only, I don't think their sound translates well into a live show - I've seen them twice on the main stage at reading 2003 and 2004 (maybe it's too big a stage for that kind of music - I don't know). mike skinner just sounded patronising both times ("you can do a 'rocky' dance to this one kids!", etc.), as if he was talking down to a crowd that's more into rock than whatever-genre-the-streets-fall-into.
but I think it's a 'you-get-it-or-you-don't' kinda phenomenon - like marmite, if you please.

yeh I know exactly what you mean. They don't really work for me live, even though I love both albums, as I also think Mike's stage banter can be really patronising, but at the same time I know loads of people who adore them both live and on CD. I mean, at Reading they even got a cheer when their banner went up.

did we get that rendition at reading? I think I was a little busy eating over-priced chinese food for most of their set.

He's really good. You can see the progress he's made from the first album to the second. It's really ashame if people only consider him as a joke. so what if he has a bit of humour in his songs? Can't wait to hear what he's up to next...

The Streets make me happy. Seen them once already, seeing them again at the end of the month. My favourite choons by them from the first two albums are Turn the Page, Don't Mug Yourself and Could Well Be In...

after reading that I went and downloaded it..........you are right. It's not that great to hear 11 songs all about how much coke makes you an arsehole and how his tour manager can't get on with his promo manager.

quite sad really, I liked the streets :(

Go listen to some proper hip-hop you virgins!

No but seriously, there is absolutely no talent whatsoever in what Skinner does, he's a brummie who cant rap so talks in a cockney accent instead. The lyrics are piss poor and have all the wit and subtlety of throwing stones at ducks on a pond.

I don't know if you've ever properly stopped and listened to what he has to say, but I live in a town with a culture precisely like the one that he comments on, and most of the people around me lead the kind of lifestyle that he writes about. I can promise you, he's spot on. Life is fucking shit here, and I want out. It's kind of like a case of welcome to the real world. Where guys get drunk and fight because there's nothing else to do, and 15 year olds mug people in the street, and you get scared to leave the house on a Friday night. His music says it all for me, and it makes me laugh because he is witty about the whole thing. He brings humour to being stuck in a place which otherwise could only be considered as frightening. Also, he's not a rapper and that annoys me the most. When did UK Garage become the same as rap?

PS - The phrase 'don't mug yourself' is a colloquealised version of 'Don't make a mug of yourself' and so does actually make perfect sense.

because
04-09-2006, 05:58 PM
listened to the 3 albums over the last week after seeing them at reading which was isnaenly fun.

skinner is a cool lyricist with a sweet sense of humour, i can start to appreciate it now.

to be sung in the tune of dont mug yourself.

Like ice cream in the window I was cooling down in temperature
You know, celcius, which is a degree too complicated for us
So I headed back home to see some of the lights had gone
With my eyes closed I couldnt tell if the lights were off or on or on or off
But I heard this sound coming from the ground
You know, under - the - ground like underground sound
So I broke out a spade and started digging it
When I got through the carpet I couldnt tell if it was bad or good or good or bad
But I got this urge to go down the shops
And then I went down the shops with £3.10
And then I went down the shops with £3.10
But it werent enough for what I wanted
So I conjured up a a profit taker, a money maker, like James Bond on Moonraker

I know you dont want to go up the stairs
Did you know there's a toilet up there
You've been holding it in your derier
So dont shit yourself mate, yeah dont shit yourself

You better watch yourself I'm a blackbelt
Yeah thats right my dads bigger then yours
Dont be tricky with your big words
Are you trying to contraflict or corralict me
What you mean what size am I
You better be talking about trainers
Cause if you're cussing my mum you'll be in trouble

I bought some trainers, you know, real nice shoes
But I couldnt tell if they were Addidas or Nike or Nike or Reebok
So I wore socks to go upstairs where I mugged myself
Yeah I mugged myself, thats right, I mugged myself
Now Ive got £3.10 and call me out to all my friends
Guides and scouts and larger louts
Yeah scouts and guides on sugar highs
A real treat
Very sweet
But I think I'm repeating myself
Am I repeating myself
I cant be repeating myself
You know, repeat - my - self

I know you dont want to go up the stairs
Did you know there's a toilet up there
You've been holding it in your derier
So dont shit yourself mate, yeah dont shit yourself

I went down the local cafe, a choice gaff
Where £3.10 buys you a tasty meal
A nice cup of tea and some jellied eels
But I get this call on the dog and bone
This geezer I know, my brothers mate Jerome
Tells me not to mug myself, what mug myself
He said, I know you're short on cash and cant get a job
But it should be someone else you've gotta rob
All this mugging youself for £3.10 is bad for your health so dont do it again
I said dont ring me with this shocker, cus its you thats off his rocker
I know difference between right and wrong and right and wrong and right
I only got in a fight with myslef cus I was pissed on Diamond White, right.

I know you dont want to go up the stairs
Did you know there's a toilet up there
You've been holding it in your derier
So dont shit yourself mate, yeah dont shit yourself

 Oh, wicked.
I wish I could show you Mikey's Poem of Mush. He doesn't want anyone to see it though.

This is a less late reply: All for everyone having points of view, but swearing at someone and calling them a dickhead for not liking the same as you and not producing any kind of actual reasoned arguement to back you up is just as crap as the original message you're quoting. ;)
