They're still going to release their debut after the loss of their guitarist. Will be THE best album of 2004 without a doubt. Britian's new Radiohead/Godspeed You Black Emeperor cross-over.
And they've got a violinist. Kudos for that.

Yeah, their debut is probably going to be one of the best albums of 2004. Any band with a violinst deserves instant respect.
My fave songs of theirs are Static In The Cities (one of my fave all time b-sides), and Black Dollar Bills.
Roll on June 7th!

hummmmmmmm the zutons. they are just a bad version of the coral. lucky for them that makes them an average band, cause the coral are amazing. but i like something original in the music i listen to, like HOTS etc.

If this ltd ed packaging is as fab as everyone tells me it is, i might just have to go buy a normal copy just so i don't ruin it :/
Aye, it gets ruined as soon as you open it, as there isn't any other way to get into it.
I'm not really going to sell it, so I'm not arsed. Besides, it was £8.99 from HMV's website (after student discount) which is the same as the normal edition.
It has the same tracklisting, so it seems stupid to go for the normal version.

So its in tescos then?
Handy for me, cause I can get it tommorow.

Well you have to get into the envelope to get at the CD. The only way to do that is to rip it open. It's got a perforated strip to make it easy to open, but it doesn't really look as nice anymore.

People only make comparisons because they're being bloody lazy journalists and can't be bothered to describe what something sounds like properly.

Glad I'm not the only one thinking that.
Plus it's all lies. Samuel sounds absolutely nothing like Thom Yorke... they're much more talented at pulling songs together than Muse and... eugh. Why compare? Why.

Absolutely right.
My bloke and I saw HOTS at V in Stafford this year - they were excellent, the sound system was not...
People only make comparisons because they're being bloody lazy journalists and can't be bothered to describe what something sounds like properly.
Nah they make comparisons because people are more likely to buy the music.
Not everyone can visualise (audioalise??) a description in their heads, but if you are told a band sounds a bit like Radiohead, Muse etc, you get an idea.
If I was told a band sounds like a cross between Radiohead and Muse I'd immediately think "Muse, yes I like, Radiohead, yes I like - I'll probably like this band then"
Comparisons are one of the best ways of describing things. From reading that review, it looks like they've described much of their sound without the comparisons - comparing them with Muse and Radiohead simply backs up their points.
Samuel sounds absolutely nothing like Thom Yorke... they're much more talented at pulling songs together than Muse and... eugh. Why compare? Why.
The review didn't say that he sounded like Thom Yorke. It said that they have the similar "despondant power". Essentially they can both make themselves sound miserable.
I would say in this case that the comparison with Muse is pretty far fetched, but all of the best music reviewers use comparisons - if anything it helps people stretch their boundaries a bit and explore new bands.

It was still wrong.
I couldn't care less if other peoples opinions are broadening... but at least if they didn't read the reviews - they'd buy the album with no false expectations.
I'd say tonnes of Radiohead and Muse fans would dislike this band...

will be seeing them next month, im really looking forward to it!
I would say that some Radiohead and Muse fans would love them, the scale of their songs is similar to the likes of those bands, i spose they are very different but also very similar in different respects.... they are just really good :D

I'm so glad i found this thread.I absolutely love HOTS!I bought the album day of release and surprisingly found it quite hard to get into,i liked it alright but wasnt bowled over so gave it to my brother as he seemed to enjoy it from the off.Two weeks after i borrowed it to listen to at work and fell in love with it but my brother refused to give it back so i had to buy it again.Saw them at V this year, was right at the front for them, singing my little heart out, they were phenomenal.Going to see them at Birmingham Academy in a couple of weeks, cant wait.Ditched a holiday with my rents so that il be able to see them.Definitely one of the best albums out this year :)

Newcastle gig tonight...anyone going?
It's in the tiny Global Cafe in the student union so it will be rather intimate.
Also, if we are one of the first 50 to arrive, we get a free CD with B-sides etc. Judging by the number of tickets left earlier today, I reckon we'll get about 3 or 4 CDs each.
I couldn't care less if other peoples opinions are broadening... but at least if they didn't read the reviews - they'd buy the album with no false expectations.
Yeah but without the reviews there would be no publicity and NOBODY would buy the album. There is no way that a band can sell a decent amount of records purely from word of mouth - there has to be some sort of publicity to get the ball rolling on the national scale.

it would be good if they toured again soon, i missed them wen they played on october :'(
nah they need to get on with the next album now, the promotion tours for the lost riots started a couple of years ago so people had heard all the songs then, but then obviosuley with the kinda tragic incident :stunned: everything got postponed for like a year... but yea they certanly need to get some new material out..
some of the new songs they played in October seemed good, one was really amazin actually and really up beat which was kind of a shock for the hots, one was kinda average though the average new is called red stars, black stars i think..

yes there album was due to be released like early 2003ish i think, but then one of there guitarists Jimmi commited suicide :stunned:, so all plans for the album got cancled for about a year, and they had released 2 singles already b4 the incident like, so they were begginin to get heard of a long tiem ago like, and they had already done a big tour promoting the 2 singles etc..

I love 'The Red The White The Black The Blue', and 'The Black Amnesias'
The band was introduced to me a couple of days ago by a mate who thought they were better than Muse. He's clearly deluded, but they are excellent nonetheless.

hmm, i have to say that i prefer HOTS over muse, but they are both great, and amazing live!

I think that HOTS are trully amazing live but only [it seems] in intimate venues. It saddens me that they could become inferior to the way they were due to people realising they are amazing thus meaning bigger venues thus meaning no where near as intimate or amazing live. Kind of a shot in the foot. I hope I am not right.
Whereas Muse will probably get better live as it will require more grandeur as more people come along as they have bigger venues & more money to spend on balloons or confetti & making every minute as pompous as the next.
Two extremes, really.

You know, that's pretty much dead on the centre of the nail's head.
The only problem was that HOTS's main left speaker was getting intimate with my ear for the entire gig and left me with a 3 day headache.
I agree though, they'd have to change their style remarkably to suit a larger venue.

I have never had a problem with standing next to a speaker. Having said that. Standing next to a speaker at an intimate gig for a post rock band would be pretty stupid. Hehe.

HOTS? Worse. But it's just one song..

Yeah the new song didn't really do much for me when I heard it. I'll give it time though as there are some of their other tracks that were slow burners for me.
Plus the other good point is that the Carling Academy 2 at Newcastle is even smaller than Newcastle uni where I last saw them. I think it only holds 400 or so people - Mew were excellent there.

Yeah, HOTS are playing the Late Room here which must be 200 max. so that should be fun.

yeah that venue is awesome, saw athlete there and the place is tiny, the bar is right next to the front too

You'd need a bar to be close if you went to see Athlete!
Haha. I make myself laugh.

I have tickets to see them in a pub in Bristol in April. Can't wait! :D
I heard Blood Meridian once on Lamacq Live and loved it. I want the second album NOW (or Blood Meridian because I can't find it anywhere...please...).
Just sin em in the place where they have Plastic Surgery. It was a bit good like :D
Aside from this girl infront of me who had no rhythym and looked like she should've been in the Pipettes but was far too ugly.

Not much worse. I prefer it to the first single of the lost riots, to be honest. They certainly haven't completely changed or anything.
Can't wait for the new album. And for them to play in ireland again, now that it'd be legal for me to go and what not.
