View Full Version : Hope Of The States
theres a thread on them. somewhere. Ive not really heard any of their new stuff.. is it better?
I like the new stuff - ambitious change of direction.
I prefer Blood Meridian though - disco-drama music. :D

The thing about Hope Of The States is that their B Sides and unreleased stuff is just as good as the album tracks (sometimes better). Songs like Thee Seventies Song, Angels Over Kilburn, A Heart Can Stop A Bullet and The Last Picture Show are great tunes.
And the instrumentals like Sts'ikel, The Workmiser Harmonies and AMM=IBM are bloody nigh-on genius if listened too in a dark room.

Fortnight.
I bought their first album and quite liked it, but I found the lead singer's voice a bit annoying after a while.

I got Left today. Watch out with the Dualdisc edition by the way, it doesn't work with some CD players. My first impression, looking at the tracklisting was "argh, where are the epics?!" because...well, my favourite HotS tracks tend to be the 8 minute ones (Static in the Cities...) and most on Left are at the 4:30 mark or so.
Fantastic so far, Little Silver Birds and January are absolutely subliminal, compact epics. It's generally a bit more fast paced than The Lost Riots but hasn't lost the signature HotS touch at all.

Didn't think it was out 'til Monday. I've been looking forward to this album for a while, now.
HotS = Stunningly underrated band.

The joys of preordering from Play :p it's a really fantastic album, Bellamy would be proud of the strings in January.
I've got to love them. They're local lads :) Got The lost riots. Left is pre-ordered. They are good.

Mm, the beginning is very good, I've always loved Bonfires, love the album version. Little Silver Birds still takes the biscuit though. Lovely album, just wonderful.
Got it this morning. It's cool :)
I like Forwardirektion. It has like, empowering lyrics hehe.
NME gave Left 6/10....:indiff:
...odd because they also think the Automatic album is an essential buy...

NME gave Left 6/10....:indiff:Well in that case they're f*ckin' idiots of the highest order.
Left is great. As was mentioned before, there isn't a lot of the trademark epics, but there are some wonderfully well written songs on the album. And if The Good Fight isn't a pint glasses in the air "for yr mates" singalong anthem, I don't know what is.
Class album.

From NME.com...
Hope Of The States play 'last' live shows
Band's future in doubt after announcement
Hope Of The States have announced their intention to not to play live again at the Carling Weekend: Leeds Festival last night (August 25).
The band who were playing the NME/ Radio 1 Tent, told BBC 3's Colin Murray through their management that this weekend's festival appearances "would be their last live performances".
Fans started paying tribute to the band after hearing the news leaving posts on the group's Myspace.com/hopeofthestatesofficial
Hope Of The States have released two albums, this year's 'Left' and debut 'The Lost Riots'
The band were rocked during the recording of the latter when founding guitarist Jimmi Lawrence committed suicide in January 2004 at the studio, near Bath, where the record was being made.
If it does turn out to be true, then it's a shame that one of the most underrated bands in Britsh music are no more.
Thanks for the music guys.

Was it Broken Social Scene that said that?
Aye, so I was told.
They ended on a good set. It was beautiful. Slightly subdued, which was understandable conisdering, and totally unnoticable unless you'd seen them enough times to know what they can be like.
Sad news.

This got me seeeriously upset last night :( I really did love them so and they're leaving quite a large void in my mind...but in the end it is their decision so best of luck to them in the future. They've left us too beautiful albums plus a massive collection of EPs and B-sides (some of their best work)...
But to me they'll live long in my memory as a fantastic yet hopelessly underrated band...
I feel sad by their split but can totally understand the reasons. I just don't think the demons of their past would go away to be honest...
But good luck to them.
Just found this on NME. It's a real shame I loved their music.

they influenced AF, how?
but yeah, gutted about the split. I reckon they should have fled to an indie label
after TLR, even that didn't sell very well so it's not like Sony would have made them stay. Then they could have continued as HoTS without pressure to be mainstream friendly.
I really hope they go back on the decision to do absolutely no more gigs, I never got to see them properly live (I saw an acoustic set with Mike and Sam playing).

you kidding?!
HoTS were so much more than just the albums, the Dus Rackets, the demos, B-sides, side projects, all hinting at just how great HoTS could have been if they'd been given more freedom (I assume there were constrictions, major label pressure). Not that the TLR and Left weren't pretty damn good anyway.
anyway, the point is...much better than Redjetson.

The Lost Riots is better but Left has some really good songs on it - a shame that a couple or so sound a bit like them trying to be like Coldplay like the title track.

Hmm let me make it clearer.
I think Left (the track) sounds like another 'I want to be Coldplay' band - and those bands are really actually quite different from Coldplay themselves, they are a bit too epic and dreary.
The rest of the album is bloody marvellous. Blood Meridian, This Is A Question and The Church Choir are standouts for me.

Thats not justifcation of a song. They do not try to be Coldplay they might sound alittle similar in some aspects genre wise but thats it.

I picked up the CD single for Left yesterday, just for the 2 B sides Boxes for Particle and End. And that's one of the things I'll miss about HotS, that their B sides were easily as good as the album tracks. As for the songs themselves, well Boxes for Particle sounds like the demented offspring of AMM=IBM (in a good way), but as for End... well, I'll let the lyrics do the talking (in case you're wondering, the ... was the one word of the entire song I couldn't make out ).
Hope of the States - End
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/chris.odonnell82/abc/03%20End.wma
Show me were the music went to die
Let me hear the tapes as they unwind
Everything is hanging on a thread that no ones holding up
What's the point of ... with no hope of ever pulling it off
Here comes the collapse of all I believed in and all I knew
And here comes the ending, the predictable ending of it all
Show me were the music goes to die
And even if it's pointless let my try
To put it back together one more time
We'll make the same mistakes again
Here comes the collapse of all I believed in and all I knew
And here comes the ending, the predictable ending to it all
Here comes the collapse of all I believed in and all I knew
And here comes the ending, the predictable ending of it all
Now, going by those lyrics, and the fact it was the last B side of the last single, do you get the feeling the band were basically saying "goodbye" with this track?

The word you couldn't get is "dreams", but the way he says it makes it hard to hear!
Well gutted that they split, no band has meant as much to me as they have and TLR was easily the best album of this century so far. Just stunning!

It would seem that Troubles is the predominant musical outlet for the ex-members of Hope of the States, what with a new LP being released earlier this year.
Whatever happened to the "as-yet-unnamed" rockier band?
