Well, if it's a rechargeable, they charge really fast and yet don't hold any power, when they're getting worn out. At least that's what I've noticed. Basically, they lose all capacity.
The best thing to do is to really drain it down, if you can try and drain each cell individually, and charge right up, then repeat a few times.

Wont help if its too old and knackered though, then its just best to replace it.

It depends on the batteries. For lithium batteries, it is not advisable to let it run down completely. It is better to let charge it up before it runs out.
