Yeah daft punk have been off the scene for a while, apart from the recent dvd. I think they make different music to JS in all truth, they're more electronic/guitar melody based than beat based.

discovery is an all time favourite album

Got their 'new' album the other week 'human after all'.....there has been talk of it being a joke album but I dunno. Doesn't sound as if it should have taken them 4 years to come up with something which is fairly samey :/

tis harder than past efforts, kind of aphex twin in places, vocoder on basically every track :/

most of the tracks suffer from a bit of repition with the same 4 bars of music repeated over and over again.

not their best effort (if it is them) but welcome enough,

best track 'Human after all' or 'robot rock'

Now, Daft Punk will bring that legendary performance to 7 select cities across the United States and Canada, with The Bowery Presents event in Coney Island (Brooklyn, NYC) as the ONLY East Coast stop on the tour.

I saw Daft Punk at Lollapalooza. They themselves are kind of boring, cause they're just behind the pyramid in their robot costumes shaking their heads, but their music is fun to dance to. And they have an awesome light show.

Do they sing live? Or are they just pushing buttons? I don't know much about them.

Daft Punk is awesome, but I never actually checked them out. Album suggestions? To start with.I'm going to suggest, slightly unexpectedly, Alive 2007 - their live album.

For their live shows they remix their songs, some of their own solo works, and even unknown beats and melodys (i.e. Aura Rock) to create an almost constant 90 minutes of amazing music.

The tracklisting for Alive 2007 lists 12 tracks, and within each of these are 2 or 3 songs that are mixed together to make the track up - about 27 of their songs are mixed, total.

The cool thing about this, is that not only is Alive 2007 a freaking amazing album to listen to, but then you can go their back catalogue and slowly discover all the individual songs by themselves.

After this though their other albums are just all amazing. Homework is just awesome house music, Discovery is house music which verges on synth-pop and 80's guitar solos, and Human After All is raw and unrefined electro. Many argue that Human After All was quite weak - but you only have to listen to Alive 2007 to realise just how important Human After All really is to Daft Punk :)

Also when you get Alive, ensure you also find a way to get ahold of its bonus 'Encore' track. That is freakin' inredible.

That would've been epic. Just to ask, how the heck did Phoenix play at MSG? When I saw them they played a 4000 person venue.

They played at the Hollywood Bowl a month prior and sold that out. That's 17000+
MSG also sold out. They've become big enough obviously, it's all about that Grammy.
Many Frenchies I know who are also Phoenix + Daft Punk fans are angry because this should have been done in their own home country. I still find it adorably funny how DP/Phoenix/Air are the biggest French bands ever and they all grew up together.
The night of the MSG they were also presented with gold records by the RIAA for WAP.
The night after they won the Grammy, they played in my town of Phoenix (irony lol). That was a 1500 capacity venue. They were sooo hungover and Deck was sick.

I have a feeling that DP will win an Oscar for best score. Even if it's awful (though I have high hopes), just the hype around the soundtrack is enough to guarantee them that award, and a Grammy.

I went to elecTRONica at California Adventures on Saturday. It was not what I was hoping for, but they played a lot of DP so I was happy.

Exactly. The soundtrack is 90% of why I want to see the film. I LOVE hearing music synced with visual stimuli. The other 10% is that it looks visually appealing with the colors and the lights. The acting looks like shit, although I've never expected much from Disney.

Yeah, it's basically available for any film within the calendar year of 2010. I just have a feeling because there's just SO much damn hype for this soundtrack. If it turns out that it's amazing, then it's practically a guarantee, imo. I don't know if you remember, but the 3 6 Mafia won an oscar for best song for a shitty rap song that was for '8 Mile'. Some people may argue against me, but I solely think that the hype around the song is what gave it the win, not that it was actually any good.

For the Tron soundtrack, they teamed up with a 100+ player symphony.Indeed they did, but I believe the above video is unrelated. Here's a quote that talks about the video I posted:

More news from the home base of Daft Punk. Dazed Digital has been working on a project with the French electric duo, and has finally put up a snippet of an artistic depiction of the duo orchestrated. “The film will be devoid of dialogue, but promises to be a visual and musical journey.” Could this be a perfect blend between TRON, Interstella 5555, and ELECTROMA!? November 18 is when we can expect this to emerge itself.

So it seems this may be a teaser for an announcement regarding an upcoming film project. "A Visual and Musical Journey"

There's a possibility for Phoenix too because they did the soundtrack for 'Somewhere' by Sofia Coppola. I hear it's very "minimalist" so it may or may not get any attention, but as a Phoenix fan I think it would be cool, but it isn't out until next month. Somewhere won the Venice film Festival top prize so it's likely that it's going to gain a lot more attention. I don't think Phoenix will have a chance at winning, but they have a chance for a nomination. Wouldn't that be cool for childhood friends DP & Phoenix to be nominated for the same category? This upcoming oscars definitely seems like it's going to be interesting, that is if Inception doesn't pull a Titanic and win everything.

I would be super-psyched if Daft Punk, Trent Reznor and Phoenix all got grammy/oscar nominations for best soundtrack. About time musical acts who have their roots in popular music got the recognition as composers of musical scores. Instead of just the old-timer classical composers like Hanz Zimmer.

I haven't seen Social Network and I honestly didn't know Trent Reznor did the soundtrack, but I do know he's a musical genius. I was never a huge fan of the type of music he produced (just not my taste), but he DID make music that I thought was well done. I greatly respect him and see him as one of the iconic musicians of the last century. I'm going to have to check out the OST for SN.

I'm sick of the contest for original song; I wish they would just do away with that. It's the same type of song year after year and there's never any doubt which song of those nominated will win. The songs that win these contest aren't even that good, but the only songs that get nominated that are original songs for film are those artists that are greatly mainstream. There have been MANY original songs composed for films that get no attention because they aren't touring arenas. I'm willing to bet money it's going to be that Carrie Underwood song she's doing for Narnia.

Trent Reznor is not a genius in the slightest.

Not that he doesn't make great music, but he is often placed on a pedestal that he definitely doesn't deserve to be on and it deflects attention from other artists who deserve the recognition that he gets.

Where Trent Reznor has been successful is managing to make a career just copying the artists he loves and he's never been the trendsetter in that area of music at all.

Fully electronic soundtracks do exist for films, even the original Tron was intended to be a completely electronic soundtrack.

Just feel this soundtrack was a complete cop out by Daft Punk and the filmmakers. There was sod all reason for having Daft Punk do it at all, but could just be part of a trend for getting famous pop musicians to do soundtracks because it'll sell more and more likely make more money than the current trend for licensing songs.

Scoring films is fucking difficult by the way, so it's a decent achievement, just I was expecting something totally different rather than a famous name to the same old.

Whether or not DP was used more as a marketing ploy, the guys were a good choice to hire for scoring the film (or help out at least). Why not bring one of the best of the electronic music genre into the production? (Classifying DP as the best is much to my own opinion. It could be any other artist for all I know or don't know).

There's also that assumption that DP scoring this Tron film would be like how they did the soundtracks for the other two movies (Electroma and Interstella 5555, although those were intended to be compliments for the albums released). I can understand those expectations, for sure. Problem is this movie got a big budget just to enter into that whole crazy special effects 3D trend, and Disney mass-marketing (on top of trying to emphasize the story to keep the franchise reboot legit).

When the first trailer for the movie was released, the music was enough to give me an idea that their soundtrack was heading towards grandiose epic-Hollywood style and more as background so that the movie itself is the focus. Oh well. Soundtrack is still pretty good, but now the movie better be awesome.

Back to the waiting game for new DP music and album. :(

Why get anyone from the electronic genre to do a predominately orchestral score?

Or at the very least, why do it under the Daft Punk banner?

I feel like I wasted an hour of my life listening to the soundtrack. The songs are useless alone without the film, and what made it even worse is that the soundtrack does not feel, in the slightest, like an album. It was just a collection of songs.

Nothing stuck in my head, nothing wowwed me, and the second song put me off instantly by using a voiceover that did not suit the song whatsoever. Finale was also so fucking cliché, it sounded EXACTLY the same as any other movie ending (timpanis rolling, cymbals crashing, over-the-top orchestra piece).

This is not a work of Daft Punk, this is Disney telling them what to do and slapping on DP's name to probably boost sales or something. The moments where the synths nearly shone through were the only bits of the soundtrack I liked.

As I said to someone after listening it, "I'm very fucking disappointed, that was terrible."

As disappointing as the soundtrack may be, take heart in the fact it should push them to announce the world tour they've been putting off.

If they do it, regardless of my money, I'm flying to Paris.

Got to see the movie last day.

This score might be the best movie score of the year, nevermind that, a good number of years. In context this score is terrific. Sure in its own form it might not be that much of a big deal but it feels like a genuine score regardless.

Dunno about you guys being all cynical and bitching about this not being Daft Punk-ish enough, the movie doesn't benefit from such an ordeal, and if anything I'd like to think it comes to show Daft Punk's further diversity, something I've been longing for a bit since Discovery.

Other than that I think that was the only upside out of three other ones with the Tron movie which made it worthwhile since on its own it'd have been a pants movie.

The score was much much better in context. Last time I listen to a soundtrack before seeing the film. Now I don't think I'll be listening to the soundtrack much on its own, but it made the film better and fit very perfectly.

I don't know if I'd call it the best score of the year but it was damn good.

Really, really hoping the leaked(?) tour dates are wrong, I can't do the Aussie ones :(

EDIT: *note to self - always check dates on web pages before freaking out. Always.*

So yeah, there are no tour dates at all, leaked or otherwise.

Bye now.

What? No, I refuse to believe it.

That's not even their Twitter account, do they have one at all? And I doubt they would announce their separation over Twitter.

I was under the impression Daft Punk wrote a whole load of songs which would be used on the soundtrack of Tron: Legacy, them writin the full film score, that was never said and I never remember seeing that anywhere.

i refuse to believe it. i will die if they split, and also, it's not as if they're always making music and touring like other bands, they have long breaks so they don't even need to split.

That's not even the real twitter. So obviously fake. Most of their stuff is just promoting tron, but sometimes they (Thomas) makes cute tweets. Twitter stopped doing the "verified accounts" thing a long time ago. A lot of famous people follow this account, and Disney would want them to promote as much as possible, so it seems the most legit.

I finally saw the movie Tron: Legacy, and while I really like the sountrack and have been listening to it for the past few weeks, it sounds SO MUCH BETTER when seen as part of the movie. Good to see the DP guys appearing in the movie as well.

Nah they were already massive in 96/97. It's more they stopped doing any acid house stuff and forgot how to mix. :p

Around The World and Da Funk were absolutely massive tunes at the time and well & truly "mainstream".

It's not bad and I've got nothing against people liking it, but people do treat it like it's the greatest song ever written and I doubt it if wasn't by Daft Punk, a lot of those people wouldn't give two shits about it.

All these songs are just a tamer version of this anyway (Stick with it!):

Oh, really? I suppose I've never really asked people about it, I don't consider it their best at all :chuckle: it's probably one of the only good things on the TRON Soundtrack. But you're right, a lot of stuff DP would be considered pretty middle of the road if other people did it.

Ahhhh, that song is immensely awesome :awesome: music video is weird as shit, but whatever
