Miss Europa Disco Dancer ruins that entire album single handedly already and I'm not even talking about other bad stuff.

Intravenous Agnostic, Let Robeson Sing and So Why So Sad are up to par though.

Well, a song about his mother drinking cranberry juice can contain a message but it's not really up to par with their other work.

The trumpets ruin the song for me, besides that Ocean Spray is a cracking song

What do you think Ocean Spray is?

I don't really think it's a lousy album but t's by far their weakest effort and the main reason for that is stinkers like MEDD.

If music was only about getting a mesage across more people would have loved Leonard Cohen and Jacques Brel

The song or the juice?

I just think Ocean Spray and Let Robeson Sing were kind of pointers towards what they did with Lifeblood. Which, incidentally, I kind of liked.

I have to say I'm definitely looking forward to April now and new material, just to see if Richey's old lyrics still stand up to scrutiny. And of course because they'll be touring, and hopefully festing it up again

I think This Is My Truth was the real Richey comedown album. Then the next couple were sort of nadir albums and hopefully they're on the way back up after Send Away The Tigers. I'm actually really excited about this new album now, I haven't felt this excited for an album for a long time...not since before In Rainbows was released although I didn't have time to get excited about that

What do most Manics fans think of This Is My Truth? Because, on balance, it's probably my favourite album of the ones I have, which consist of Generation Terrorists, The Holy Bible, Everything Must Go, TIMT and Send Away The Tigers.

To me it's a bit too dark, it has a few ace songs on it, but the middle sags and the end drags. Even Black Dog... can't save the second half of the album, it just dirges for me. Manics are at their best when they're being urgent and energetic, and that period up until the end of Lifeblood didn't really suit them.

Talking about JDB's voice...I was hacked off at the amount of multitracking they used on Know Your Enemy. His voice is powerful enough to not need Dave Grohl/Grant Nicholas's best friend.

Time called on historic pub after 155 years

ONE of Cardiff’s oldest pubs is being forced to shut down to make way for the new St David’s 2 development.

Built in 1853, The Vulcan is a favourite of rock group the Manic Street Preachers as well as hundreds of other regulars. But after first being earmarked for closure because of the new development three years ago, owners Brain’s Beer have confirmed the pub, on Adam Street, Adamsdown, will finally stop pulling pints in June next year after being handed a compulsory purchase order.

Despite booming business, landlady Liz Smart and husband Brian were told by contractors the pub would be pulled down to make way for a 3,000-space car park for the new shopping centre.

Looks like they'll have to find another watering hole...

Why don't the Manics step in and do what The Wellington in Manchester did...it was moved brick by brick from Shambles Square to where it is now on the Triangle. They should definitely do something, especially as popular and profitable pubs are becoming more and more scarce these days.

Well, seeing as he's been officially declared dead now his estate has passed on to his family.

The chances of him actually being alive are so slim. I doubt it very much.

I would just head to my nearest CD exchange and get some of the albums secondhand. It's worth it, I'm sure you could get them cheap, and you can always sell them back there if you don't like the music. That's not likely to happen, of course. The Manics are quality. :D

Exactly! You could consider it 'required reading' for the Manics.

You know, I don't know if we'll hear from Calliopeia again. These lads may scare her off.
Aw, but they're so sweet and cool:(

Andy, where can I download GT please? I lost my copy, actually, I didn't, I'm sure that I lent it to someone who omitted to give it back :(

I would just head to my nearest CD exchange and get some of the albums secondhand. It's worth it, I'm sure you could get them cheap, and you can always sell them back there if you don't like the music. That's not likely to happen, of course. The Manics are quality. :D

Definitely get the first three: Generation Terrorists, Gold Against the Soul, and The Holy Bible. That's the holy trinity IMHO. After that, Everything Must Go is worth grabbing.

im sorry to inform you that to my dismay we don't have any second hand shops around here!!!:(:(

Album announcement + Live dates
Hello Miles

As we previously advised, we have been making music - to be more specific, we have been in Rockfield studio in Wales with Mr Steve Albini recording a new album, Journal For Plague Lovers.

All 13 songs on the new record feature lyrics left to us by Richey. The brilliance and intelligence of the lyrics dictated that we had to finally use them. The use of language is stunning and topics include The Grande Odalisque by Ingres, Marlon Brando, Giant Haystacks, celebrity, consumerism and dysmorphia, all reiterating the genius and intellect of Richard James Edwards.

The record is scheduled for release on 18th May and will be available on CD, deluxe 2 CD, download and LP.

The full tracklisting is as follows:

Peeled Apples
Jackie Collins Existential Question Time
Me and Stephen Hawking
This Joke Sport Severed
Journal For Plague Lovers
She Bathed Herself In A Bath Of Bleach
Facing Page: Top Left
Marlon J.D.
Doors Closing Slowly
All Is Vanity
Pretension/Repulsion
Virginia State Epileptic Colony
William’s Last Words

An original piece of Jenny Saville’s art is the cover for Journal for Plague Lovers, one of her paintings also graced the cover of 1994’s The Holy Bible.

It's all round and awesome, like a posh round barn. It used to be a steam engine shed back in the day.
They've got an awesome-looking circus there at the minute, and I keep meaning to go and see them.

It was all decrepit in the 90s, but they've done it up all lovely:

I know, it's a rip off. You don't even have to make a donation to the Roundhouse if you don't want to, but I did because it was still an absolute bargain.

So, I may see London peeps on Friday and Saturday (as long as the credit card purchases went through etc).

Right, according to a spamblast I got from the Manics mailing list, the upcoming shows will be in this format:

First half: James, Nicky and Sean playing through all tracks in the new album in full, in order
Second half: Favourites and rarities etc with a full band (not sure if that means orchestra or whatever), this section having a different set list each night.

The Nicky Wire interview on Music Weekly (http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/audio/2009/may/07/manic-street-preachers) is well worth listening to. He talks a lot about Richey, the album and Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly.

The Wire's vocals on 'William's Last Words' actually don't sound bad at all, but thank god that he wasn't allowed near the mic on 'Marlon JD' or 'She Bathed Herself In a Bath of Bleach' for the finished album. He sounds awful (like normal) singing those songs as demos.

I fell that way about pretty much all of the songs, it's just quintessentially Manic.

On a n00by note, Facing Page Top Left makes me think of Unintended from Wembley...just before he kicks into the chorus and strums down...

Yeah William's Last Words is actually a really good song and Nicky sounds OK, but he sang vocals for two other songs on the demos and they sounded worse than Wattsville Blues.

With no luxuries, no ornamentation,
Utter simplicity.
But it's also clean,
It's clean as a rifle."
