have you ever read the lyrics to that album?

jeez talk about long complicated words, spouting an endless stream of emotions about the subject matter of his suicidal friend,

i can make no sense of any of it other than Televators, but its all good for me :D

Sarah

They have a meaning behind them?
Thought they might have been like Bowie lyrics.

This needs bumping... The Mars Volta are amazing!

I have the album and the EP, but have never seen them live. I've heard a load of audio from their shows, though. And they're supposed to be releasing a live DVD soon... that should be sweet!

Larsen B
28-02-2004, 08:17 PM
cool that would be a dvd worth splashing out for,

and as for self indulgent, i thought thats what music was for anyway, to express your own feelings...

I have a ton of Mars Volta mp3s from live shows and stuff, it's really good!

I missed them twice, once at Leeds because I didn't remember what time they were on and once in Manchester, because of school. ARGH!

Hope I'll be able to see them some time soon.

Heh. Better than all three. 'Cept Volta aren't a patch on Muse live. Too intense for me. In fact, too self-indulgent-macho-guitar wankery for me. Still ace, mind.

That has got to be worth my time and money to see...though i've heard a recording of Inertiatic ESP live and it don't sound too great...

The whole album is dedicated to one of Cedrics close friends who killed himself, and the album is based on a story (fictional) that Cedric wrote which sees what happens when this friend went into a coma.

The album scares me. And for some reason, I love the lyric from Take the Veil, 'Its not over 'till the Tremulant sings'

A couple weeks ago I got ahold of the unmastered new Mars Volta album, Frances The Mute. It's pretty good. It has way more parts dedicated to jamming, so it can be a little hard to listen to all the way through without having something else to do to keep you occupied.

I've heard one or two songs by them, and they seem pretty damn good. But I haven't actually got either album...

But, there are tickets on sale now for them; so would it be worth going even if I don't have either album (normally I hate doing this, as you can't appreciate the music as much if hearing it for the 1st time)?
It will probably cost me about £35 (ticket + travel + food), which is quite a bit.
To get an idea of my music taste, the bands/artists I listen to a lot are: Muse, Radiohead, Faith No More, Portishead, David Bowie, Nirvana and Pink Floyd.

Any help from you Mars Volta fans would be appreciated :)

Sarah
28-02-2005, 11:21 PM
Unless you are an avid fan, having the album or not makes little difference. Go & enjoy the progness of the night as it will undoubtedly be so far from the recording anyway that it wouldn't make any difference.

I haven't got the album but I have listened to it looooads on winamp music. I think placing an entire album on there is a great marketing tool. Before, I hadn't heard anything much of them and didn't want to get the album, now the album is on the top of my most wanted list (yes I do have one).

i still think De-loused is better than Frances, but apparently there's still one more song to come from Frances the Mute, and it's called Frances the Mute. apparently it's a "decypher" to the album. this is just what i've read tho.

a track to decypher the meaning of the album or something. anyway, i have that song now. it's not on the album, it's 14:36 long. it's going to be released on the vinyl.

it's a pretty decent song, reminds me of Cut That City. they said in interviews they were gonna release a song that wasn't on the album, and this is it. here's the lyrics to it.

"it's been thirteen seconds since you all last said i've become the apparition you predicted for my death you said that flirting brings you closer to the end you can bait into the water but you'll never get the hint and like a stain of bricks goes dancing by your head plucked from an icebox grafted on my skin my coat has hid the marks mink hits the shovel fix near the sway of pendulums boar abrasions and a kiss she said i'll never let them hurt you i'll never let them in what you took from me is mine what is mine i'll never give mascara glass in the molar weeds herash a serpent infancy his eye patch pussed a gap of sand into his shine a sedative more and more the dirt collects you'll hever find her body now her closet festered in a secret air blonde underneath a blackened hair he never knew the colony gestated in his bed mingle with the carnivores you've something both in common now till one day his wasted breath swollen throat and karma debt set foot inside a parlor to find her drunken by receipts he held her by the ankles gutted at the nave yes gutted and depraves he tied a rope around her legs and let her hang for seven days this never happened but I saw you leave and crawl into a bed of broken windows this never happened"

if anyone really wants it, i can send over msn, if you got bband tho, otherwise it'll take a long time.

That's on the album though? It's listed on the inside...

I was at the gig saturday and it was amazing, I've liked them since they first started out after the demise of At the drive-in, if anyone likes The Mars Volta they should definately check ATD-I out. And your damn right about Jon the drummer too hes amazing although I have seen him on better form, still great though. i was wearing 4 stupid layers all through the gig and i was right at the front so i nearly died from the heat lol. hmm, with the tracklisting. i thought that the last two tracks (miranda... and cassandra geminni) were divided up into their respective sub-sections. why whould cassandra... have 8 sections to it, when on the back there are only 5 (Tarantism; Plant a nail in the navel stream; faminepulse; mulriple spouse wounds and sarcophagi)? this is confused slightly by the fact that the lyrics to track 5 (Miranda...b) Pour another icepack) are listed under the lyrics for casssandra geminni......i'm confused :p also, my i-tunes divides it how i think its done (and no, i haven't messed with it)

and as for self indulgent, i thought thats what music was for anyway, to express your own feelings...

I think he meant indulgent as in, jam-band crap non-music at times.

it gets annoying. Sure it might be okay as backround sounds to some sci-fi movie, but not worth my money spent on a cd.

however, I am talking about their 2nd cd which I bought a week ago. There are more unnecessary minutes of noise on it than on the first record.
I loved every song on the first record enough to not be maddened by the unnecessary minutes. but, with the second album, they went too far.

I just had the unbelievable opportunity to sit down for the full 75 minutes and listen to every beat of The Mars Volta's newest masterpiece. The only thing I can say is....wow. Unbelievable. That, my friends, is the art of music displayed at it's highest level. The CD is like a book or journey. One in which you cannot open it up to any point and once you've started you have to finish. Unbelievable listen. I reccomend this CD to all music aficionados.

Has any else expereinced The Mars Volta yet? What do you think?

Wow.

I just got a hold of Frances the Mute and it's VERY different from anything i ever listened to.
I think it's brilliant, i can listen to it without trying to figure out the "higher meaning" of every world even though most of the time it's pretty clear what he wants to say. LOL, and i don't even speak spanish, but there're enough sites that will transpate it for you.

I actually was expecting something more like L'Via L'Viaquez throughout the whole album coz that's the first song that i heard. Well, it doesn't exactly go like that but i like it anyway. The only problem is that i can't just pick a song to listen and then switch to something else coz every song is like 10 min long and very contagious, so once i put it on - i'm gone for like half an hour at least

Simply brilliant

hahaha
I remembered your post at Avalon, when they seemed to be doing nothing, and some of the "songs" (hehe) sounded like an instrument tuning! Two days ago i went to their concert at Boston and at some point i was absolutely certain that no one in a clear mind would refer to those noises as music. (Except for those ceazy people who were there, including me)

I was actually seriously considering not to go! If I wouldn't, I could blame Muse for that later on, lol. On the other hand, if it wasn’t for Muse, I wouldn’t even know who Mars Volta were. I first heard L’Via a few weeks back, when Matt and Dom thought to educate American public in the musical arena as DJs at some radio station that was broadcasted on the web. I heard the song, loved it, checked few sample tracks, liked them, bought the new album, loved it, went online to check Muse touring dates, somehow ended up at ticketmaster.com and… i saw that Mars Volta would be in Boston in 2 weeks time! Of course the concert was sold out, but there’s always ebay, just for the special cases like mine ;).

With all anagram and enigma codes chaos, together with the projects that i left till the last minute i realized on Monday that the concert’s going to be in two days and that I’m in no way going to finish everything that I absolutely have to finish AND to go to the concert on Wednesday. Grrrrr! I had the ticket, I knew about it for two weeks and I couldn’t go cos I had a final exam the next day that I didn’t study for! Fortunately, I wasn’t the only one who struggled with time and our prof. rescheduled the exam for the day after. Thanks God there're teachers who are considering of their students, who don't study the material, to postpone the final!

When i got there i managed to find an ok spot from where i could occasionally see the stage. After half an hour several people in front of me moved aside and i had a good view of what was going on in front of me. And, hmm, for some time nothing was going on there, which was a bit strange. When I listen to the “uninteresting background noises” on the album, i'm at home and there’s always something to distract me when the music isn’t intense enough. Over there, I had nothing else to do but to look at the band that seemingly was doing nothing or to examine the crowd that I‘d examined enough already, so kept looking at the stage.

Mars Volta have very dedicated fans. I didn’t hear many people talk during the quiet moments and when it got rocky and loud all heads at the venue seemed to move with the beat anywhere I looked. Someone tried to mosh during the first song, but then the singer asked the “assholes in the crowd” not to hurt other people and i didn’t see any further attempts.

I think that they played the whole “Frances the Mute”, plus few other songs that I didn’t know. I’m sure that I heard Cygnus.., The Widow, Cassandra Geminni, and L’via, and they probably played them in full, cos the concert was 2 hours and 15 minutes long. I think if it was just an hour, like Muse concert that was there half a year ago, i wouldn't enjoy the concert nearly as much as i did. Those quieter moments, the “instrument tunings” as i called them at first, intensified this massive chaotic stream of sounds when it suddenly erupted.

Hehe. My dad would never understand this music. I doubt if he would even call it a music, lol. He’s not a stranger to “odd” melodies, but when all 6 members of the band start playing at once, furiously ripping apart any hint of melody that one may produce it’s hard to know how to call it. Even so, the last part that they played was awesomely insane. I couldn’t hear the drums for the guitar squeaks, the saxophone, keyboards, bass and intense wailing, which would be too much for an unprepared listener. All of us in the crowd were more than just prepared and this chaotic stream of "undistinguishable noises" was exactly what we’ve been waiting for.

And I didn’t notice how quickly time went by. I went home right away after the concert but the feeling of pure ecstasy was so fresh in my mind, i didn’t go to bed till 4am. Mars Volta is definitely one of the bands that you MUST NOT miss if you have a chance to see them live. I obviously compare every concert i see with Muse but in the end i can’t really say that one is better than the other. They’re both great bands, and they’re both awesome live.
Hmmm. Muse are fantastic, everytime I see them I'm so overwhelmed my jaw drops to the floor and Mars Volta are hypnotically insane (in a good way) :D

That took me quite a while to write it all, lol.
I hope it wasn't compeletely waseteful, if it was--well... i enjoyed it and i thought you would do too.

Cheers :)

You'll like them more if you read up on what the albums are about (especially De-Loused). Both albums are like, set in their own little worlds, and it's just so fascinating to listen and to visualize what's going on.

At first, I thought that Frances the Mute had too much noise and not enough music. In a way, I still think that, but now I barely hear the noise as noise, and it's kinda faded and blends in as part of the song. Anyway, they are my favorite band atm, sorry Muse

Yeah, that would be the first volume of the soundtrack to his movie, "A Manual Dexterity". I believe the film is in the process of getting edited in the Netherlands (he's been spotted around Amsterdam a lot recently and apparently that's where the editor he's using lives). The film's been quite a long time coming though so don't hold your breath. The soundtrack is quite good, I recommend picking it up. It's mainly instrumental with guest appearances from his friends and family and Cedric sings on the final song.

Sounds great! I am going to buy it as soon as I can. :fro:

Heh. Anyone else with the L'Via single notice similarities between 'The Bible and The Breathalyzer' and Tom Waits stuff?

I'm in love with this single. L'Via is definitely my favourite track off the album...

Wohoo I bought L'Via L'Viaquez 7" single and wow The Bible and The Brathalyzer is nice. I gotta say L'Via is hot. But Cassandra is hotter. Woh.

Every intelligent person should own that album.

i just had to quote that one, it's true, the mars volta really don't care about anyone who dosn't get their music.

If you ain't smart enough to keep up, just go listen too pink or something.

i just recently got my hands on the decoder single ( it was called "frances the mute" but didn't appear on the frances the mute album)
here are some of the more important sections of lyrics
for those of you interested in the goings on of L'via & Vismund and the others:

...And like a stain of bricks goes
Dancing by your head
Plucked from an icebox
Grafted on my skin

My coat has hid the marks
Mink hits the shovel fix
Near the sway of pendulums
Boar abrasions and a kiss”
She said, “I’ll never let them hurt you
I’ll never let them in
What you took from me is mine
(and)What is mine I’ll never give”

...His eye patch pussed, a gap of sand
Into his shine a sedative
More and more (and more) the dirt collects
You’ll never find her body now
Her closet festered in a secret air
Blonde underneath a blackened hair
He never knew the colony
Gestated in his bed
Mingle with the carnivores
you’ve something both in common now

...Till one day his wasted breath
Swollen throat and karma debt
Set foot inside a parlor, to find her drunken by receipts
He held her by the ankles
Gutted at the nave, yes gutted and depraves
He tied a rope around her legs
And let her hang for seven days

Class stuff, it explains alot of the scenes described in both Cassanda gemini & Cynus...Vismund Cygnus

those last to lines are sung at full volume after 5 minutes or so of near whisper, and hit you like a tonne of bricks.

Yes frances the mute is a vinyl only single. how mean.

it's a three part song, the first is just a very long creapy bell noise, until about 5 minutes in the song start's in ernest, after a few minutes however it just goes right back to nothing except Omar doing some mental picking on his guitar behind some lyrics, thne the final push, it's a chorus of :

This never happened, but I saw you leave, aand crawl into a bed of broken windows,x4

Very mean if you ask me! :'( When does Omar not do something mental on his guitar, I only dream of playing the guitar as good as Omar does.

The 'Frances the Mute' song was cut from the album because there simply wasn't enough room for it and Universal wouldn't pay for a double cd. It's available in cd format on the Widow single.

Sorry if this has already been posted, no time to read through the whole thread (or I just can't be arsed to), but you can preorder The Mars Volta's next album now, it's called Scab Dates. Nice. Live recordings apparently. Can't wait!

When I first bought DITC I had it on repeat for weeks. I 'get' them, or rather I 'get' Cedric's lyrics - more so after reading the Deloused storybook. That's the only clear reason I can give for liking those two wee aliens and all their friends so much :) it's not my usual style of music at all, too much random noise. Omar's a genius with that guitar though. Mmmmm, L'via....

I listened to DITC for hours when I first got it. It really is a masterpiece. I printed off the Deloused novel type thing from the net, and got about half way through it, and I seem to have misplaced it. I'll have to read it from the beggining again though, as it's been a few months since I first picked it up and a lot has happened [/mind blank]

Yeah, there's no way you'd be able to read it as a stop-and-start job. I read it laid out in my garden sunbathing one day :D - and then I had to read most pages twice to make sure I'd understood it all.

I think they're just beyond most people, and it's easy to dismiss them as I dunno, a pair of nutters, or whatever insult people tend to give them. Hell they're beyond me too, and yet.. I 'get' it :)

listened to scabdates afew times now tis a pretty good recording with some good songs on there. Ghosted Pouts, Gust Of Mutts being pretty damn good but then again I find theres far too much "wankery"...i.e solos that just are pointless and crazy noises that go on for 20 minutes..otherwise its a good listen.
not sure if its worthy of a purchase though.

I missed out on them playing in London cos I wasn't into them that much when they played there.

Same happened with System of a down...I loved them from about 2001-2003. Then they didnd't release anything, so my musical tastes changed a bit...Then in 2005, they play in London, and i don't care...but then I get thier new album when it came out in July..and I was fuming that i'd missed them...
