This debate is what I am currently doing on YouTube. I (forgiveninasong on YouTube) don't think that there are ANY strings on Citizen Erased, mainly because of an interview that Dom did with Laut Magazine (here (http://www.musewiki.org/We_feel_sorry_for_bands_being_hyped_%2820031002_La ut_article%29)), in which he says that they tried using strings on OoS, but then didn't use any of them.
Now, in the CD Inlay for OoS, it does mention strings, but I had previously thought that this only meant on 'Megalomania'. This dude on YouTube seems convinced that there are strings on CE, but I for the life of me cannot hear where.
I've searched all over MuseWiki to see if I can have this answered, but no, I can't!
As soon as this is answered, this could possibly be merged with the Citizen Erased thread, but I felt a new thread was required for QUICK ANSWER ENHANCEMENT!!!!
Anyone shed light on this subject, that will no doubt bother me for years unless I have it answered RIGHT NOW!!!:mad::mad:
Thank you so much, Musefans! And honestly, I'm not as n00by as I sound in this post...honest :$:$ I just really really FAIL TO HEAR STRINGS!!

There are apparently, but they're near silent if they did include them on the mix. Someone on muselive ripped the string from the youtube video and remixed the track with them.
CoD and Hoodoo showed Muse + strings is a very good thing. Shame they didn't release any of the tracks with strings on in the end. Same happened with AP. They recorded the strings but didn't use them. Perhaps someday we'll get a load of stringy Muse songs from the vaults.

There is a 'synthy'-type noise, which is what I think this guy on YouTube is referring to as being the strings. But I really really do think that it is some sort of synth/keyboard affair, as opposed to a strings-type thing.
What songs on OoS have strings, then? Apart from the "improvised cello" on Megalomania?
I really really don't think there are, but I need the back up of the Muse g33ks so I can burn this YouTuber to HELL! :stunned:
I am so mean and superior....

it is a keyboard affair, they sound like organ type sounds playing the musical score that was originally for the strings
and if they are in the mix theyre barely audible(unlike other muse songs with strings)

The use of violins in rock music has become so cliché in the past decade so I'm glad they didn't

I guess that would have been cool, but I probably would have rather had it how it is now. I really don't think they needed to change what is, in my opinion, the best song on the best album by the best band :p

No they left out the strings on the album, instead using a synth organ.

would've been interesting to hear with strings, maybe they could do it a TCT. But I quite like the (is it a synth organ?) sounds where it goes into micro cuts cos it's unique.

*le sigh* I had this arguement with the person on YouTube about this aaaaages ago! The strings are NOT on the album at ALL. It's a synth organ. This is what you can hear in the background, and this is what they now use live, as Morgan plays it. Sounds pretty awesome, though.

What you're thinking about is the noises at the end and during the last piano verse right? That'd just be synth filters being adjusted with a delay over the top. The synth organ is the sound that people think are strings during the verses and choruses.

Just want to say that this is the most amazing song that Muse ever did. Deep music and deep lyrics. Shows everyone what Muse is all about.

I personally think that this synth organ is one of the best parts of the song. Although the solo beats almost anything the band has ever put to tape.

Wow yeah! Would have been amazing, but you cannot criticize Citizen Erased for anything:)
If Muse chose not to put them in, then it wasn't meant to be! Btw is Dom going '1 2 3 4' really quietly?
Although the solo beats almost anything the band has ever put to tape.

Random guitar noises? WTF did you get that from. It's one of Matt's best solos.

^ Well, there isnt really any melody or flow or anything to it, and I thought I read somewhere where it was just effects laden random guitar noises. I guess that part was wrong. Still, its my favourite solo by the band, and one of my favourites ever.

Of course he improvises during live shows, but everything on the record is totally planned out like a military invasion. :p
BTW is this solo where Matt sounds most like Johny Greenwood?

This is another appreciation thread, but this one's for Citizen Erased (I annoy myself with posts and threads). Anyways, show everyone your admiration for Citizen Erased here.
My favorite part is the intro riff with the harmonics. I wish I knew how to make my distortion sound like that!

Appreciation Threads are the new "OMG I HAVE THE TRACKLISTING FOR THE NEW ALBUM" threads:LOL:.
Anyway, this ones slightly overrated in my opinion, but still great. My favourite moment is in the bridge where the guitar and bass play the riff at the same time. Immense. Also, the solo is probably one of the best that Matt's done, if not THE best (though Sunburn may be).

I luffs this song too! I think I need to take a break of it though, because suddenly the amazing parts have gotten a lot softer. I don't know if it's the volume or overthinking it, but something happened. Oh well, go back to obsessing over New Born for awhile.
But yes, we are bored. We have NOTHING to talk about here.

I agree.
The beginning of this song just seems really sloppy to me, can't really explain it, might have something to do with the drums. Nevertheless, the middle to end of this song is absolutely incredible.

According to Muse Wiki the song was written around a drum beat Dom created.....
But I agree, I really like it once it slows down then picks back up again. Like Micro Cuts it took me a little while to get into it, but I like it, enough to write in the designated appreciatory thread:p

I was looking over the set-list for the teignmouth and Paris gigs, and I couldn't find Citizen Erased anywhere!
It's not a secret that Citizen Erased is a favourite among the Muse fans and I just can't belive that I won't be able to hear it live this year... I'm really upset about this.
So is it just me, or should this massive song be on the set-list?
What do you guys think?

Might move this to S&R as it is mainly about one song rather than the gigs and tours themselves.
But to answer your question, because it is an old song. It isn't a single. Not everyone likes it. It requires its own guitar that is only used on that song. It takes up over 7 minutes that can be used to play new material or bring back older material that hasn't been played as often. Band are possibly bored of it.

I'd rather hear this song than almost any other song on their discography but I'm prepared for the fact I probably won't hear it.

Cave won't be a regular on the setlist - tbh, they only played that at Tinmuff because they promised a song off the first album for their hometown.
They'll bring a few older songs back but I'm not really sure whether they'll be ambitious enough to bother with anything on OOS/Showbiz apart from NB, PIB and FG.

they played the first 3 of them in 2007/2008 so i assume they could bring them back depending on how they do their setlists (i guess all of us are praying the euro tour will have variety) they did hyper music riff too in 2008. can't see why screenager would return though :-/

What does hardcore fans mean? I think it's becoming a bit of a stereotype that every massive Muse fan loves Citizen Erased. I mean, I do, but that's not to say that all massive Musers are the same.

I am yet to see it live, but I wouldn't be bothered if I never got the chance. As you say, there are SO many other tracks I'd rather hear...Showbiz, TSP, Uno, Assassin, Deadstar etc.
Also, as Olly said - they Euro tour hasn't even started yet, give them a chance.

its a song that id be disappointed if it gets played on every show of the tour, i wouldnt want to expect it to be played when i see them, id want it to be a surprise.
its something that should be kept for few occasions

I'm not fussed; I love the song and I consider myself a hardcore Muser but any song live is a treat. Cave at Teignmouth was fab so it'd be nice to hear stuff from their Showbiz days but Matt said in an interview about performing tracks that fit in with the current theme of The Resistance.
If they played every song we asked for we'd be there for days! :)

It'll crop up every so often - but as has been said, Muse are yet to start The Resistance tour proper, it would make no sense to use up 7-8 minutes of set time when playing as support for U2 whose audience is likely to be largely unfamiliar with Muse, particularly their lesser known numbers.
And also, CE was in the sets solidly 2001-2005 and made plenty of appearances on the BH&R tour. Time for a rest, I think.

I really love, how Matt's vocals are extended into infinity in the first slow part - the last word of the chorus 'free' goes on for a very long time, and is perhaps replaced by a synth, or sampled vocals :)

This is another appreciation thread, but this one's for Citizen Erased (I annoy myself with posts and threads). Anyways, show everyone your admiration for Citizen Erased here.
My favorite part is the intro riff with the harmonics. I wish I knew how to make my distortion sound like that!
I find standard reverb or delay plus heavy distortion about right for that part.

New Born is not the following:
over-rated;
repetitive.
The only reason it may be repetitive is because of its (pretty standard) structure. Other than that, it's awesome.
Citizen Erased is alright. I enjoy playing it on t'Bass, followed immediately by Micro Cuts, 's about it.

I love this song. I think the Hullabaloo version kicks the shit out of the album version though (the album version is still amazing). This song has everything: mega riff, heavy part, quiet part and at 3:53 the sound of a small child eating an apple beneath a weeping willow.
Even my mum thought this was amazing god rest her soul. In her words "He's got a very haunting voice"

I remember properly hearing Citizen Erased for the first time, I used to put albums on my ipod and just put them on shuffle and not really pay attention to the song titles, plus I only used to listen to the songs I already knew (shameful :$). I was sitting in my hotel room in Las Vegas looking out on the strip, and this amazing riff came through the speakers, and by the time the chorus kicked in I was completely blown away. A real 'holy crap what the hell was that!?' sort of moment
It is definitely my favourite Muse song, if I ever heard it played live I think my head would explode!

Last night my brother found a rather nice watch.
He handed it in to a security guard on the way out and he said he would give it to lost property.
He was standing on the left hand side, probably about 20 or so rows back.
So if you lost a watch and was standing on the left its worth phoning the O2 in case it was yours.
Also my sister lost her phone, not in the crowd (she was right in the mosh pit and everything!), but as we were walking out!! It was in a pink eyore case. Just wondering if anyone found it

This song just has an amount of quality that it is hard to put into a few words. It is the lyrics, the stark contrast, the solo, the beautiful ending.
Im an American fan who first heard Muse with Absolution (TIRO specifically) which is really the first chance an American had to hear Muse. So I bought abso and looked up a ton of old stuff online. Most of abso and most of the old stuff I didn't really like at first, it had to grow on me to what it is now.
But Citizen Erased was different. The first Muse song I had ever heard that instantly struck me, blew me away so hard on the first listen. I must've replayed that song 20 times the first night I had heard it. Nothing has matched it since (bar exogenesis which I DO consider Muse's best work ever but I feel its too different and not really a "song" persay, so it doesn't count.) By song I mean single Muse track.

Matt's voice sounds so sexy in the soft parts, with good headphones, it sounds like he's intentionally singing into your ear very softly. :ninja: His warm breath flowing over your neck and his lips grazing your earlobe tenderly.

Only really recently started getting into it - now appreciate just how vast, varied and, well, epic this one track is though. Often just listen to it by itself, so the feeling is 'ruined' by other songs.

I don't know, but by the look of that smiley you used, and if it represents the face you are currently making in any form, I'd say you are probably now going to spend many weeks looking for their addresses, tracking them down, and murdering them with a knife.

No way.
I've seen that face several times before in real life.
It always results in that person going texas chainsaw massacre on someone, plus it is actually the expression of pure violence....if you look at any video of someone about to commit a sudden outburst violent act, they make this face most of the time.
Just sayin', shit like this happens from time to time.

Yeah and internet based simplistic smileys are ALWAYS completely reflective of how the real person would look.
I should probably stop replying to you now, because all you really want is a response. That's all trolls really want isn't it?
I'm just bored at the moment so I thought, stuff it.

Mmmkay.
A few weeks ago I didn't think about this song at all, it was one of those I just had no opinion on because I had it on auto-skip, I just didn't listen to it all.
Then I come here and see everyone going mad over this song, and I wonder what all the fuss is about.
Suffice to say...
...I get what the fuss is about. Cheers Musers. Now in my top three-four Muse songs and my top-tenish ever songs.

Well I don't have a favourite Muse song, I have like six or seven equal favourites and depending on my mood, they rotate. But Citizen Erased is right up there at the moment. Anyway, this is my review of CE from the OOS review/rate thread - if it doesn't make sense, that's because its written in the form of track by track flowing into the next to get an idea of the flow of the album.
"Citizen Erased" is widely considered the best Muse song and for good reason. From start to finish this seven minute epic is absolutely brilliant - the overrated calls are not justified in my opinion as this song deserves to be loved and deserves to win any competition or any poll for best Muse song.
Oh dear, I came so much I forgot to describe the actual song. Okay, let's see. First there is the opening harmonics are everything we love about Muse and then that bassy riff starts and oh dear Lord! What more can we say?
The verse again is slightly quiet and also resembles the rhythm of Hyper Music but then the chorus is screamed out and we hear that wonderful falsetto we love so much before the song breaks down a bit for that mini guitar solo between the first chorus and second verse.
Then as we break into the second chorus and we realise there is just as much emotion in it when it is sung quietly and gently, not to mention an octave lower. But then the harmonics/riff and bass kick back in again and we have that epic guitar solo and one more screaming version of the chorus.
The song could end now and you'd be content - it's been five minutes of pure brilliance - but this is where I think CE earns most of it's points. It doesn't end. The guitar continues with the same melody as the verse before that part at around 5:19 where the guitar slows right now and even better the chord played at exactly 5:40 when it feels like the song resolves itself and for the last minute and a half it becomes a ballad but it is so beautiful it just makes it even more epic, the piano outro and the falsetto and that noise in the background enhances:

That's why it's easily the best CE performance. That harmonic can only get so repetitive.

that's why I love live Muse - they don't just play the album versions, they love to mix it up with riffs/jams and other impromptu bits and pieces.
This little part here is a perfect example of how they made a great song even better live!
