Great b-lines.aye!
and some shit to make this "at least 10 characters"
Got Lateralus, AEnema and Undertow.
They are all great, great albums. Not ideal for a relaxing night, but it's music that is pretty much accessible to me.
It's strange, because it didn't really take any time at all to grow, it was almost instant.

These guys are definitely great. I've seen em about....once in 97, twice in 02,.....and I think that's it. maybe again in 03, but I dont remember. I just remember them kicking a whole lot of ass, and having some crazy guys hanging by their feet, 30 feet above the stage, swinging around and doin all this stuff....pretty fun to watch.
I used to just like the music for what it was, but once I started finding out the words, I started liking them even more.
You gotta love their drummer. He's fantastic.
Salival has some good songs on it. Their cover of No Quarter is really cool.
Favorite cd: that's a tough call. I think they were all my favorites once they came out. Except for Opiate, cuz I didn't know about it until after Undertow.
Ok, Im pretty boring today. Can't think of good things to say about one of my favorite bands who I've listened to for years.

I love the way this music drives you onwards to the edge

Lateralus is GREAT... Undertow is pretty good as well, but it's a bit more raw sounding than Ænima... Opiate is something to buy if you're a die-hard fan... their first EP... oh and Salival is something for the fans as well (it's a boxset with a couple of live songs, unreleased stuff and their videos from Opiate, Undertow and Ænima), allthough No Quarter and You Lied are great covers

Tool fans (like me :D) might be excited to see this::
LINK (http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1486242/20040407/tool.jhtml?headlines=true)
"Carey said he hopes the new Tool record will be ready for release by the end of the year, but he added that it may not be issued until early 2005 in order to avoid being lost in the Christmas shuffle."
"It's going to be something really cool," Carey said. "It won't be just another band-playing-live video."
read the article in the link for the full story.. but the main thing is, Tool are making a new album :D yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyy :D

Lateralus is one of my favourite albums ever.
it is the most amazing piece of music in my opinion. so much detail and hidden genius has gone into the album. it's like a puzzle. there are so many amazing things about the song and the album that make it so amazing.
http://www.angelfire.com/ma4/question/insight7.html
everyone read that, and be amazed. there is also another thing i have found out too, about the song, that relates to that article there and the whole "fibonnaci" theory.
if you listen to the song Lateralus, you were saying something about the drum pattern being 1,1,2,3,5,8,13. the fibonnaci sequence. well, if you read the lyrics on the very first line of the song Lateralus, it is Black then white are all i see in my infancy.. here is what we noticed.
if you listen to the way Maynard says the first line, he says it like this: Black *pause* then *pause* white are *pause* all i see *pause* in my infancy*. if you count the number of syllables before each pause, and you will infact notice that it is the Fibonnaci sequence aswell.
everyone should read that article, and then maybe appreciate Lateralus some more. it's my favourite album from Tool.

the new tool album will be out next year sometime. along with a tour i imagine.
adam, justin and danny have been working on songs, kinda influenced by Meshuggah as they were touring together, danny said in an interview "this is definately the best material i've ever worked on in my life" or similar.
they were sending music to maynard while on tour with apc, so he could work on lyrics over the music, and that's about all they're doing as far as i know.
i really hope it's in essence of Lateralus, while a little heavier in ways. i trust them that it will be astounding, and will be listenable for years to come. so...all we can do is wait i guess.

REMEMBER, DON”T KILL THE MESSENGER
You know the old saying, “no news is good news”, well… that was the case as far as the recording process was going for the new Tool CD, but now things may have changed a bit. Yesterday, when I went to the studio to give Maynard a bottle of wine (a 1992 Maya) for winning the bet that I had with him involving his new film “Sleeping Dogs Lie” (I lost by default, not being able to attend the Sedona screening), not only wasn’t Maynard there, but, in what seems to be a case of enantiodromia (something becoming its opposite) if ever there was one (!), I was told the reason why he wasn’t there. I wish this post was dated April 1, but, unfortunately, it isn’t. Like a doctor giving a patient a straight, honest answer to a medical diagnosis, without sugar-coating the truth, here’s exactly what I was told: “Maynard has found Jesus.” This will come as a complete shock to most (but not all) of you, as it did to me. In fact, it just seemed like another MJK prank until I talked to the one person who I believe would know if all this was legit or not. After nearly an hour on the phone with this person, the answer I received was that Maynard has indeed “found Jesus” and that, for this reason, he’s abandoned the project for the time being, if not entirely. I don’t know what the f**k is in the water these days, but hopefully a black jelly belly will turn up in that golden bowl… that’s all I can think to say at this point. Before leaving the studio, I watched as Danny made arrangements to go play some golf, while Adam and Justin kept working on a particular song. So, in case you missed it (those who don’t read the whole post), here’s today's news: Maynard has found Jesus…

Reports are surfacing today that Tool frontman Maynard James Keenan has quit the hard rock quartet after finding Jesus.
The unexpected news, which has stunned Tool's loyal fanbase, was generally suspected to have been an April Fools Prank, but the webmaster for the official band site has conceded that the vocalist really has called time on the progressive Los Angeles metal act:
are you sure its a joke?

Lateralus is excellent!
I had a discussion the other day, about whether or not Tool is really metal. It's Art Rock (that's a blurry definition anyway) but they're often being labeled 'metal'. I'm not sure about that.

Some people say they're metal, some people say they're nu-metal, some people say hard rock, some people say prog-metal..
To be honest I would say they are metal, but really, what does it matter. It doesn't matter if people call them metal or hard rock or neo-progressive emo powerballad rock... it makes no difference to what they actually sound like, it's just a label. Everyone has different ideas of what all these different genres actually are anyway, so it's pointless debating it.

Maynard doing things with APC, Danny working on various other projects, everyone preparing for the new album... Many reasons why.

Hoi, you! Have you done this before?
I can get everything to fit together amazingly well, up until Triad. I can find no way to get Triad to fit into Eon Blue Apocalypse, and then Reflection, The Patient, and Disposition. These tracks just don't seem to fit together in that order. Any suggestions?
Everything up to Triad works really nicely though.

The sequence is cut into two spirals (Lateralus lyrics: "Spiral out, keep going"). The first one is (6,7,5,8,4,9). It comes back in this sequence too. So that's likely to be right. The second is more instrumental, I don't know how that flows, could be different. The first, either way, is  .

there's a rumour that they are working on bringing out 2 cds.
not a double album or because it's too long, but a new(ish) style of recording. i read that you would get both cds, and have to play them at exactly the same time in order to hear the album correctly. it's started with Maynard trying a new style of singing, by only singing in syllables. one part of the word is heard on 1 CD, and then the other half on the 2nd CD i imagine. like that.
Flaming Lips tried this tho, on their album Zaireeka, which came in 4 CD's! but this failed miserably because no-one could get 4 stereos working at the same time, to get the cd(s) to work in sync. not sure it's gonna work for Tool either.
i've been reading about how people have been very impressed with the instrumentation on the new songs. 1 song reported at around 18 minutes in length, with justin using some new technique that shouldn't sound like it should be played on bass, but sounded at home when played. Danny bragging that this 18 minute length song is of the highest calibre, and the greatest song he's ever worked on.
man, i just can't fucking wait until Tuesday, see what all this new info will be.

are you at all familiar with the Fibonacci sequence used on Lateralus?
and no, i don't think they are pretentious. that word gets thrown around too loosely. i don't think they create their music for notification, they are just simply trying out new ideas. that's like calling Radiohead pretentious after releasing Kid A, they didn't release it to look like pompous pricks, they did because they wanted the new direction.

Nah, Lateralus is kinda overrated. Still good but not the best.

I read that on the 20th Schism and Parabola are released as singles. Which includes the videos to each and remixes on them. Toolshed said something about a DVD that's out very soon too, but I can't remember what it said exactly.
Rough date for the new album is April.

So the album's supposedly available to music journalists and one wrote a review of it but it had to be taken down because the band asked. I didn't see it but apparently it mentioned 11 tracks with some mixed together and it "rocks to the point that hearing it makes him almost cry and pleasure himself"

Track 1 (7min 3sec). Mesmeric start. Hypnotic beat. Jagged, angular off beats.
Familiar trancey passages punctuated by a guitar part reminiscent of an older
Tool track. Tribal drum beats f@!# with a lovely melody and climax with
Maynard’s vocals. I am going to cry.
Track 2 (7min 12sec) Melodic intro with almost balladic vocals from Maynard.
Lighter feel (almost, dare I say it, APC-tinged) but not for long. Danny gets
stronger – Baresi releases our tubthumper and the feel gets much heavier into
‘chugga chugga’ off beats. Then – here’s some unusual guitar work. Man, it’s
almost Hendix-like! Then back into a heavy tribal groove. I fight off the urge
to masturbate furiously.
Track 3/4 (This is either one 17 minute monster or two tracks – of 6min 20sec
and 10min 26sec – only the Gods Of The Stinfist know the answer). Whichever it
is – DO NOT SMOKE THE WEED WHILST LISTENING TO IT! Starting with Buddhist
temple-flavoured gong tweaking the collective nipples of Kraftwerk, a deep
sphincter-rumbling bass and om chanting might recall ‘Parabol’. After 3 minutes
of this nerve-wracking niceness, all Hell breaks loose with mega-heavy riffdom
before slipping back into spaciness after 30 seconds. Like an epileptic
convulsion in a night of deep sleep. Hawkwind does Greensleeves whilst Pink
Floys look on. The Record Company people are starting to look nervous and
uncomfortable as if they have seldom HEARD anything so strange and worrying.
What the f@!# is this? Let me outta here! I need to go snuggle the Radio One
Playlist! Suddenly it’s a crazed sea shanty for whacked-out space travelers.
‘You’re the only one who can hold your head up high. It’s my time now… my time
now… give me my… give me my…’ duets Maynard with himself. Danny fights free of
the evil clutches of Dr Baresi and goes off on one. Adam’s guitar recalls
something off Lateralus again. It’s Triad, I think, but it’s almost impossible
to identify one riff whilst another song goes on. The musical equivalent of
rubbing one’s head and tummy simultaneously in different directions. They’re
doing this on purpose to f@!# with our heads. Bastards! Returns to full-on
rhythmic Toolishness to end. No it isn’t the end. It doesn’t end like any other
song ends. Tool never ends. I’m losing it. Therap me now, please.
Track 5 (Probably. 6min 11 sec definitely). Oooooooh. This is THE one. Ya know
what, pluggers? Radio might even go for this! Maynard’s vocals at the start are
quite extraordinary. Place equal parts of Chris De Burgh, Tiny Tim and Bilal The
Muezzin in a blender and run for your life. Easily the most commercial track to
date. In fact, easily the most commercial track Tool have EVER done. That guitar
is waaay strong again. Did Adam bribe Baresi? This is still twisted. It’s hard
but commercial. The end spells a relief as climactic as a boil bursting. I go
‘Yessssss’ and the whole room of cool jouros looks round at me as if I’m a
Bateman cartoon ‘The Man Who Ordered A Pork Sandwich In Blooms’. This is a
SERIOUSLY awesome track. Just you mark my words.
Track 6 (1min). In which Maynard becomes a Native American for no good reason.
Strange, but we like a bit of strangeness.
Track 7 (Maybe. Could be two medium length tracks and a terribly short one, too.
I’m now losing the will to live with the stopwatch. It’s 14min 45sec of music,
whatever). Guitars to the fore again. One long note with almost blues-like,
overlaid note progressions. f@!# me, it’s House Of The Rising Sun cut with
Ketamine. There are unsettling whispers and talking. Is this a bad trip or a
psychiatry session? Come to think of it, is there a difference? ‘How Are You
Today?’… ‘Tell Me Everything’ then THWACK! Into such a breathtakingly slappy,
powerful riff kick that I’m actually physically winded for a nanosecond.
Demonic, growling, rap noise over rhythmic heavy heavy groove. Forget the Were
Rabbit jibe. This is a f@!# full-on, nasty, shaven headed WEREWOLF. A lightbulb
goes mental in the room. The Record Company almost lose all cool and run for it.
I damn nearly join them but now I AM crying. I am gulping back wracking sobs at
the sheer Toolishness of this monstrous, magnificent track. This is the real
deal. Again snippets from Lateralus. You ARE playing with us. You ARE! This is
Tool’s equivalent of ‘spot the Hitchcock in the Hitchcock film’! But I don’t
care. It’s like The Best Of Tool in one song. The Bomb. It ends like the violent
end of a violent life. And then it ends again. Unless that’s another track, of
course….
Track 8 (6min 44sec). Odd noises. Sea shore meets ironworks. Ever see the
cartoon meisterwerk ‘Spirited Away’? You MUST! In it there is a character called
Kamajii The Boiler Keeper who has 6 arms and an army of small black coals. This
sound is similar. Soon joined by elastic bass and drum twangling over
multi-layered Maynard whisperings and chanted vox. Shades of Pink Floyd again.
Shades of the more ‘moody’ Lateralus tracks again. Reflection. Disposition.
Tribal and hypnotic.
Track 9 (9min 04sec. I think). Melodic, slow, hypnotic. Almost balladic. Wall of
Sound build-up. Danny does some Bamboo pole-type drumming into big rif***e. Big,
big sound. Tool at their weightiest. It’s almost Chinese at the end. I can think
of worse things to be like. Perhaps the boys have their eyes on the World’s
fastest developing market?
Track 10 (OK it’s 11 but I’m f@!# if I can work out how we got here). The walk
out track (their description not mine). Oddness. The Noodles of Satan.

This is taken from the Dutch listening session. Kindly translated by someone on the Toolshed forum.
---
Sunday night the day we’ve been waiting for was finally here. A handful of journalists were allowed to hear the entire new tool album, without knowing the track titles or album title.
The location for the listening session was original; a former monastery in the middle of the Amsterdam red light district. In the alley where it was there were women behind windows on the left and a doorman to let you in on the right. If you didn’t know where it was you would have walked past it.
Right after entering a girl from the record company shoves a contract under everyone’s noses in which we have to promise we won’t publish anything about the album till 13 April. Apparently there was some excitement/trouble after the review from a previous listening session in London was put on-line. A shame.
At the bottom of the stairs we enter the hall from the picture above. Imagine some chandeliers with burning candles, three speaker-towers/stacks with flat screen monitors showing all video’s and a couple of white couches from the lounge era (late 90’s). Nobody eats the French bread, tapenade, nuts, coleslaw and other treats.
After 30 minutes of drinking and socialising drummer Danny Carey, who has been walking around all evening with a beer in his hand, enters with a cd in his hands. The visitors all get wireless headphones and are allowed to enjoy on the couches. Danny Carey says ‘eet smakelijk’ (enjoy your meal) and wishes us fun. He walks to the vip area with bass player Justin Chancellor. Maynard doesn’t show himself.
We are spoiled during the listening session, the waitresses give us many warm and cold snacks, so we don’t have to get up during listening. It’s almost a silent disco, more than 30 people nod their heads to the beat, occasionally disturbed by the sound of breaking glass. Afterwards Maynard, wearing a cowboy hat, walks into the hall and is handed a microphone. Everyone takes off their headphones in a reflex, but you needed those to hear the singer. “ Thank you for you time and your patience, and now go away!”
Justin and Maynard disappear immediately afterwards, Danny takes his times to answer some questions and sign some booklets. According to the colossal drummer the band will be playing besides at Pinkpop in the HMH (the Heineken music hall, a venue in Amsterdam). Probably in the same week as Pinkpop or in the last week of June. There is no more time; We are kicked out of the building in a friendly way because there is another listening round for the international press.
Because of the embargo I’ve not been able to say anything about the record itself, but with my notes I can write something here on 13 April. There won’t be promo cd’s before the release of 2 may. The question is whether this approach is useful. A record store employee noted that the arctic monkeys leaked songs on purpose and their album is very successful. And even if I keep my mouth shut, there will probably be someone else who will put something online about the listing session.
---
Can't believe they actually made an embargo! So, it's official. No information until April 13th, and it's going to be released on May 2nd!
