I really like Schism at the moment.
Because of Guitar Hero: World Tour.
And Parabola, Vicarious.:)
The Opiate EP isn't really that good :erm: Might be a grower, but just listened to it for the first time and not really getting thinking much of it. The title track is alright though

It does grow on you, took me a while. Love it now such a dirty sound.
Hopefully after the American tour they will get in the studio.....
Or come to Australia;)

Yeah it is pretty raw sounding.
I'm hoping for a few dates in the UK (Soniphere please) and then they'll have a break and return to the studio. One can only hope.

Maynard certainly likes the word 'belligerent', and rightfully so.
Wow! This thread has been dormant for 4 months now. Just read through it in its entirety. Some great stuff regarding fibonacci sequence, etc.
Just wanted to add that I think Maynard may like the word "precious" even more.

Either way, Tool Is my absolute favorite band, Their music has inspired me, I've liked them for as long as I can remember, My older brother really got into AEnima, and so That was really my first taste, but I didn't become a die-hard untill I got into High School, so around 2000 - 2001

Get the album Aenima, as it contains classics like Stinkfist and the title track, and will give you a good general idea of what Tool are about.

And if ya wanna give that "3rd eye" a spin just try to apply the lyrics in the songs, to your personal life/past.

Undertow and Aenima are the most accessible (even though Tool borderlines nowhere to accessibility) but Aenima is generally the better album.
Lateralus is the most progressive.
10,000 Days is the most experimental/conceptual
All depends on what you're looking for.
I cant decide which is my favorite Tool album, but Ive listened to 10,000 Days the most. Its just so beautiful. Vicarious and Wings to Marie Pt.1 and 2 are god tier.

Yeah, they like to put up seats whenever possible to prevent moshing. No GA floor at my show either. Although the SF show was all seated GA, but that show was eaten up by scalpers in a couple minutes.
They're playing 3 nights at Nokia Theater in LA in July. Tickets accidentally went on sale today but the shows were pulled and will go on sale next week. I really hope they change the setlist but I highly doubt it. I'm a sucker and will probably get tickets to these shows too.

yeah I saw them twice in 2002, similar setlists then, on that tour, although with tool their albums are so far apart you can't really call them album tours... they just do tours when they feel like it haha. but yeah they're definitely shorter even than the 'recent muse'-length setlists. but tool songs are longer, and when they playing live time flies by, they could play all their releases in order and it'll still only feel like one album!

Vicarious's lyrics pretty much sum up exactly what the T.V. is
Eye on the TV
'cause tragedy thrills me
Whatever flavor it happens to be
Like:
"Killed by the husband" ...
"Drowned by the ocean" ...
"Shot by his own son" ...
"She used a poison in his tea,
Then (she) kissed him goodbye"
That's my kind of story
It's no fun til someone dies.
Don't look at me like I am a monster
Frown out your one face, but with the other (you)
Stare like a junkie into the TV
Stare like a zombie while the mother holds her child,
Watches him die,
Hands to the sky cryin "why, oh why?"
Cause I need to watch things die from a distance
Vicariously, I live while the whole world dies
You all need it too - don't lie.
Why can't we just admit it?
Why can't we just admit it?
We won't give pause until the blood is flowin'
Neither the brave nor bold
Nor brightest of stories told
We won't give pause until the blood is flowin'
I need to watch things die from a good safe distance
Vicariously, I live while the whole world dies
You all feel the same so why can't we just admit it?
Blood like rain fallin' down
Drum on grave and ground
Part vampire, part warrior,
Carnivore and voyeur
Stare at the transmittal.
Sing to the death rattle.
La, la, la, la, la, la, la-lie (x4)
Credulous at best
Your desire to believe in
Angels in the hearts of men.
But pull your head on out (of) your hippie haze
And give a listen
Shouldn't have to say it all again
The universe is hostile
So impersonal
Devour to survive
So it is, so it's always been ...
We all feed on tragedy.
It's like blood to a vampire.
Vicariously, I live while the whole world dies
Much better you than I.

O and don't forget the lyrics for Maynards Dick on salival :p
It's all an open center
Opens up and lets the wind lift him away
It doesn't have to feel water
? It's just a place that feels right with him ?
Kinda like the way you're breathing
I kinda like the way you keep looking away
Would you like to glide on
Slide a mile six inches at a time on Maynard's dick
There's a shyness found in reason
Apprehensive influence swallow away
You seem to feel abysmal take it
? then you're careful grace for sure ?
Kinda like the way you're breathing
Kinda like the way you keep looking away
Would you like to climb on
Climb on my six inches and go down on Maynard's dick
Took you out in the back of the toolshed
Put it right on top of your forehead
Took you out in the back of the toolshed
Now you know what you're fuckin with... Maynard's dick!

Personally, I think Aenima and Lateralus were creative peaks for them, Undertow/10K Days somewhat missing the mark, and Opiate being even less than that.
That said, there's great songs on all their albums.

I like 10,000 Days' concept which is why it's such a standout point for me. Vicarious, Jambi, Rosetta Stoned and Wings are all such amazing tracks. Lateralus is an equally amazing album, its all a bunch of maths and scientifical stuff which is also interesting in its own way.
I have this huge problem in categorizing my favorite albums with Tool because I love all the albums on different accounts. Apart from Undertow because they sold their soul to make a record that we bought its not really that memorable apart from the first half.

10,000 is excellent from start to finish :erm:.
And Undertow, just 'meh'? It's a fantastically ballsy, riffy, powerful debut album. I actually think Lateralus is their weakest album if I'm honest .
Aenima has always stood out above the others for me.
10,000 Days is weak after Rosetta Stoned. I mean, the only reason Lost Keys and Lipan are passable is because they are, well, lead-ins to Rosetta. Intension, Right in Two, and Viginti Tres = filler. And Undertow is just pretty basic.
I don't understand how anyone can call Lateralus weak. It's near perfect. Same with AEnima,

Right In Two is one of my favorites from 10K Days and one of my favorite Tool songs overall but other than that I agree, that albums does have its weak spots/filler moments.

I don't think Lateralus is weak, so to speak, I just don't think it's their magnum opus.

It's not that it's weak. It just feels a bit too unvariable at points. Reflection still bores me on the ocassion.
I hate to use this term to compare records since it's so simple but overall I feel as if 10,000 Days has a "better sound" to it since all Tool albums seems to shift in some way. Intension is a nice interlude though, sweet change of pace, and Right in Two is an amazing track. I don't see how it could be categorized as filler. As for Viginti Tres, it's just standard brooding Tool outro. You could say the same thing for Faaip De Oiad.

10,000 days is by far the best sounding Tool album, but the sound doesn't determine how "good" an album is. Personally, it's my favorite album but you have to listen to the whole thing. If you just want a few tracks to skip through then any other Tool album is better.

Yeah, if not for Right in Two and the amazingly awesome two-part title track, I'd probably consider 10K days to be a complete waste of time. The rest is all just kind of paint-by-numbers tool... or at least Lateralus pt. 2, and if I want that, I'd just listen to Lateralus.

An ex-friend (I say that because he's a d**k), got me listening to Tool.
I like a good chunk of their material, but not everything. I've tried listening to their albums front to back I don't know how many times, but I can't make it. The "next" button ends up getting hit.
Maybe I can list the songs I really like and you all can recommend where to go from there?
I love (5* rated in my iTunes):
- Vicarious
- Sober
- The Pot
- Schism
- Parabol/Parabola (the only way to listen is both pieces together)
- 46 & 2
- Lateralus
- Pushit
So, which songs should I look closer at if I like those?

Firstly, look at 'Ticks And Leeches' from Lateralus, because that song is simply drumming perfection.
Also, on 10,000 Days, if you listen to 'Lost Keys' going into 'Rosetta Stoned' it makes it that more epic (if you can stand the overall 14 minute length that is, but then if you can't how can you be a Tool fan? lol)
I would also recommend listening to more songs off Undertow as well as 'Sober'. 'Prison Sex' is one of my favourite Tool songs ever, it's just pure brilliance.
More off Aenima as well. 46 & 2 is great but by far not the best on the album. 'Stinkfist', 'jimmy' (Listen to 'Intermission' first for the full feel of that), 'H.' and the title track itself are all incredible songs to get into.
Also, look out for the new album, whenever it gets released ;) I have a feeling it will be redonkulously awesome :awesome:

You're the only one who can hold your head up high,
Shake your fists at the gates saying:
"I've come home now!
Fetch me the spirit, the son and the father
Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended
It's time now!

a) he still sang in Third Eye
b) that was 4 years ago
a) There was a lot of vocal distortion on Third eye, whereas Vicarious would not use that.
b) It's understandable that his voice isn't as great, given how much he's toured and used that voice in the last 4 years.
SF audio torrent with good example of vocal distortion on Third Eye: http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=313060
Edit* Also:
CraveOnline: How do you keep it fresh on tour? How do you build on these songs you’ve been playing for so many years at this point?
Adam Jones: This tour has been great because we’re actually doing a different setlist than we’ve been doing in the past. We’re getting older, and Maynard has trouble sometimes singing the older songs, from back when he was young and screaming his fucking head off all the time. His vocal chords are getting older and he can’t really do what he used to do all in a row in a string of back to back shows. So we’ve changed up the set a little bit, which feels really good. Once we actually get together and start playing, it’s so great. It’s so great hanging out with the guys and playing the songs. It comes back to keeping it fresh.
Sometimes in the middle of a song we’ll start jamming, or go off on some tangent of a song and come back. That’s a great way to keep it fresh too. Also we keep adding to our show, we put a lot of money back into the show because we want it to be stimulating. We want all the senses to be on overdrive. More lights, more visuals, more lasers, more soundscapes. That’s what I would want in a show

ya, and with the setlist that tool is now belting out, its almost like watching a completely different band from their 2007-2009 shows.
I saw em last year, and the setlist sucked, and I was amazed.
Then I saw the videos on that dude HuntingtonSt's youtube channel from their show, and just holy shit...
The energy Tool is putting into this years shows, compared to the semi-slacking shows of the last 3 years, where maynard barely sang (and 3rd eye, intolerance, the patient or intension where just not parts of the setlists), is just outstanding.
Jesus I wish I was in australia.. and to be honest, I might even try to find a way to get my ass over there for the shows in a few months, even tho I dont know a word of australian..

I don't get how someone can not get excited about a Rammstein and Tool headline act. That's enough for me to change my underpants within seconds
I'm super pumped for Rammstein, that's the main reason I'm going. Tool are up there too. I think I was a bit too far away from the stage last time they were here, and it was outside so the sound wasn't as great. It's a smaller venue in Auckland, which is the one I'm going to so it should be a fair bit better.

I think the fact that this band waits so long to put out albums is the reason they have such a cult following. It's like people are constantly starved so they jump on anything they do, which is rare.
Saw this band in '07, one of best shows ever. Aside singing, I think Maynard said 2 words the whole show.
"Greetings"
and
"Farewell"

Ya ill most likely be flying my magic carpet over to australia to see a show or 2. After all 3rd eye is in the setlist..
Speaking of 3rd eye, check out this live video of 3rd eye from 1996 that HuntingtonSt released on his youtube channel.. The quality is just so epic that your gonna have to watch it to understand...

Saw Tool for the second time last night, and OMG was it amazing. So much better than there 2007 set at the BDO.
I shed a tear with how fantastic it was.
Was also quite surprised when Maynard made a few jokes up there!

Anyone else who considers 10'000 Days as their best?
Ænima is a close second, though.
Lateralus is very good aswell, but it should've stopped after Reflection. I think Triad's boring and too repetitive.

It is definitely close to Ænima for me. :yesey: As a whole album, it's the most consistent of the four. There are so many excellent moments on it as well.

^^Cool!
Tool is doing a spring US tour. I'm not posting the dates because they haven't announced a CA date. :phu:
(Kidding. I'd post them, but I'm on my phone at the moment. But I'm not kidding about the lack of a CA date. :phu:)

Can't believe they played Hooker with a Penis during this round of shows. I'd love to hear that song live. Glad they're changing up the setlist a bit.

I'm gonna be in New York when they're playing one of the NJ shows, and it's only an hour away by bus... but I'm gonna be hella jet-lagged on my first day in the US, there will be no one who will want to travel with me and the ticket I would get would be expensive and in a poor position.
Guess I'm just gonna have to wait until they play sunny England :(

That sucks. They played three hours away from where I live. Didn't know if I could get the weekend off because of work, then I did just a couple days before the show.
They really needed to add more tour dates. I can't believe they didn't have a single CA date. I never have much luck working out time to see Tool. I've only seen them a few times because of conflicts, sold out shows, etc. :(
Guess I'll have to stick to Puscifer for my Maynard fix this year.
