Alice In Chains rule, to compare them to STP is a silly, silly thing to do.

Go out and buy Facelift and Alice In Chains.

Also if you ever get chance go and see Jerry Cantrell, he still plays some AIC songs live.

RIP Layne

Grunge was a hybrid of punk and metal, AIC where metal, not grunge.

Alice in Chains, initially formed by lead singer Layne Staley (1967-2002) in the mid 1980s as Alice N Chains, was, along with Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, one of the most commercially successful bands to break out of the Seattle, Washington grunge scene. Unlike many of their peers, Alice in Chains' sound owed more to heavy metal than punk or 60s rock; what linked them to the grunge movement was their Seattle roots and introspective (and often somewhat morbid) lyrical concerns.

Who would've thought that Maynard James Keenan, the singer for Tool and A Perfect Circle, would have made a near perfect singer for Alice in Chains? That was one of many surprises Friday night when some of Seattle's musical stars came out for a cause at Premier nightclub.

The cause was a benefit concert for victims of last year's tsunamis, and the stars included Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart, Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic, Supersuckers, Sir Mix-A-Lot, The Children of the Revolution and others. But the brightest stars were the remaining members of Alice in Chains -- drummer Sean Kinney, bassist Mike Inez and guitarist Jerry Cantrell -- who performed together for the first time in six years.

Novoselic acted as host for the show, which was put on by K-Rock (KRQI-FM/96.5). The show raised more than $100,000 for relief efforts.

The reformed Alice in Chains featured several big names filling the shoes of late vocalist Layne Staley, who died of a drug overdose in 2002. Wes Scantlin from Puddle of Mudd, Pat Lachman from metal band Damageplan, Ann Wilson and Keenan all shared microphone duties.

Each turned in remarkable performances that paid justice to the fallen singer. The band performed two sets, one acoustic the other plugged in, with Lachman taking the lion's share of the vocal duties.

The evening wasn't just about Alice in Chains. The Wilsons performed three Led Zeppelin covers along with "Barracuda" and "Crazy on You," Sir Mix-A-Lot offered up rap-metal versions of "Baby Got Back" and "My Posse's on Broadway," and Supersuckers played a blazing set.

Still, Alice in Chains owned the evening. The band's acoustic set started off with "The Killer Is Me," which was followed by "No Excuses." Later in the set, which closed with "Down in a Hole," Ann Wilson brought a soulful edge to "Brother."

For its second set of the night, Alice in Chains opened with "It Ain't Like That" from "Facelift." After the song, Cantrell introduced Scantlin, a surprise guest, who sang "Again" with Lachman and then took over vocal duties for "Would" and "Angry Chair."

But it was Keenan, another surprise performer, who proved the most natural fit at replacing Staley. He impressively nailed "Man in the Box" and "Them Bones."

For the last song, Wilson, Keenan, Lachman and Scantlin took turns trading verses and lines during "Rooster." The "We Are the World"-style rendition of the song was the perfect ending for a magical night.

I just always thought of them as straight ahead metal, just like Soundgardens early stuff, only Soundgarden moved away from that and started adding the punky elements later. AIC never did that. They just started doing more acoustic songs as they got further into their career.

ok... so heres what we have to work with for grunge... (thanks OED)

"grunge, n.

* A. n. a. A style of rock music characterized by a raucous, often discordant guitar sound, lazy vocal delivery, and downbeat, freq. nihilistic lyrics, and (in later use) influenced by heavy metal and punk rock. Cf. earlier *GRUNGY a.
Popularized as a generic term in the early 1990s to describe the music of a number of (esp. Seattle-based) American rock groups and the bands which were influenced by them.

1973 New Yorker 19 Nov. 234/2 Your average American rock-and-roll fan can stand the Dolls' brand of high-strung urban grunge only if it comes from somewhere beside New York{em}preferably England. 1979 Globe & Mail (Toronto) 17 May 18/3 This is the latest in a long line of heavy-metal bands of the type which appeals mainly to high school aged males looking for a cartoon macho male image to identify with and the heaviest of heavy-metal grunge to be blasted by. 1986 Washington Post 19 Jan. D4/2 Most bands would fall headlong into cliché when dishing out the sort of overdriven guitar grunge served up in ‘Don't You Go Walking’. 1994 Rolling Stone 2 June 66/3 That was..the key to grunge: a music of black celebration rooted in the brutish white blooze of the early '70s, revved up with the chain-saw aggro of late-'70s punk. 2000 S. BROUGHTON et al. World Music: Rough Guide II. I. 215/2 As few of these bands got airplay, an underground scene developed which later split into hardcore and grunge."

if you look at grunge musically, as essentially a slowing down of the punk scene - this would suit AinC's music taste. Also, as Kim Thayil was the one who told Jerry Cantrell to play in drop D style tunings, this would add further weight to the argument.

Dirt looks predominately a grunge album in itself... metal does not generally lend itself to songs such as 'love hate love' or 'sunshine'.

sap, jar of flies... its a constant acoustic, melodic theme that runs through Alice In Chains' music, which resulted in one of the best 'Unplugged' performaces I've heard. Again, this is something that lends itself more to grunge than to metal.

Also, if you compare it to other music at the time, it is not only the geographic location of AinC, being in Seattle, that throws them towards 'grunge' - (from Wikipedia) "Hair metal bands, such as W.A.S.P., Poison, and Guns n' Roses, had been dominating the charts, especially in the US, for several years in spite of declining critical viability. Grunge music can be sharply contrasted to hair metal's macho lyrics, anthemic riffs, and perceived lack of social consciousness, especially in the race to attract mainstream audiences. However, this began to have the opposite effect on audiences towards the end of the 1980s, and the popularity of hair metal began to die off as the popularity of grunge began to rise.

Grunge was embraced by youth for its simple defiance of the norms of the era's popular culture, which was seen by many as corporate-dominated and superficial. In the rock world, expensive, designer clothing was shunned in favor of flannel, jeans, and Doc Marten boots or Converse sneakers. In England, youth who dressed in this fashion were sometimes called grungers, while the term grungies was often used in the United States. Traditional rock and roll ostentatiousness became offensive, at least for the time being."

thats some of the reasons as to why I think AinC are more grunge than metal...

progmetalfan
11-03-2005, 10:08 PM
AIC were definitely pure metal. The grunge labelling never made any sense.

I compare it to how Green Day may be called "punk", but they are very much pop rock with a little punk thrown in.

Alice in Chains was perhaps the best grunge band ever... and that if we can actually consider them part of the genre because they really seemed more than just grunge.

They went beyond the same repetitive bass riffs and depressing lyrics of Pearl Jam and Nirvana. Alice In Chains took grunge to a much darker, musically developed and substancial level, and that's what made them better than any other grunge band... well, except for Smashing Pumpkins. It's hard for me to pick which of the two bands was better.

First of all Pearl Jame were never Grunge, and their lyrics weren't depressing (not to mention that calling Pearl Jam and Nirvana's lyrics "depressing" in relation to AiC is just retarded).

AiC were one of the best band ever though.

Jar of FLies is especially brilliant.

I don't see DuVall as a replacement for LAyne, but just a guy who is cooperating with the band in order to do a tribute for Layne...
I can't conceive the band with another front man... but that DuVall guy sure has guts, it's not easy to go there and stand in Layne's position...

I miss you Layne! You'll always be remembered and loved :)

but lets face it.. Layne was addicted to a "very heavy" drugs.. he was almost non-stop on drugs.. that made him to be so mysterious and unique but also it killed him.

DuVall has an awesome voice and personality, people love him, what I could see twice.

Layne was introvertic.. DuVall is very open and goes in the crowd without dragging hes demons with him.

I love Layne and I miss him a lot! DuVall obviously is different than Layne.. but it doesn't mean he's worse.

Layne was sad, DuVall is happy.. Alice in Chains will never be the same, but they'll always be one of my fav bands:happy:

it saddens me that people can't seem to see what a wonderful soul Layne was beyond drugs. He was the heart and soul of that band. And he connected with the audience... he crowdsurfed... he talked to the people.... he was such an awesome frontman, so much carisma. And he was an artist in every sense of the word. He will never be replaced.

He was one of the most carismatic people who's ever lived on the Earth :yesey: <3

AIC's Dirt album is one of my all-time faves (from the 90s, that is)--still listen to it a lot!

I saw Jerry Cantrell's boots on display at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland last week...one of the thrills of my (young) life thus far, I can tell you!!! :D

Rain When I Die is just awwwwwwwwwwwwwesome.

What can i say about Alice In Chains ..........Great band , beautiful music and lyrics.and ofc Layne's voice.........oh that voice......makes me go dreamy really....i recently found out that he died back in 2002(slow me)...it's a pity reallybut then it's better to burn out than to fade away i guess..........

I saw them last Friday, well really from the distance of Stage 1 (while waiting for NIN) at Soundwave while they played on Stage 2 :p personally I thought they were pretty good, but then again I haven't seen AIC live with Layne, so I don't really know what I'm comparing it to :P

I have to say that I didn't have much high expectations for this one, given that I was one of those who thought that maybe they should have called it quits after Layne's death, and while Layne is irreplaceable and unique, I think it's fair to give Jerry Cantrell and the guys a shot to prove that they can still come out with something good.

I fell in love with Alice in Chains after I heard the Unplugged version of Nutshell. Layne wore his heart on his sleeve epecially during that performance, it was beyond beautiful!
Jar of Flies will always be one of my favourite albums. Same with Dirt.
I miss Layne Staley, he was something special, but I'm glad that AiC are back
Duvall is an amazing singer in his own right, and I'm glad that they still feel like old Alice
Jerry's harmonies are as chillingly beautiful as ever!

Just got back from Brixton Academy and my god, what a gig!! They just played awesome tune after awesome tune, nearly everything a fan could wish for. We got We Die Young, Again, Check My Brain, Lessons Learned, Black Gives Way to Blue (with video of Layne :( ), Them Bones, Dam that River, Rain When I Die, Love Hate Love, Nutshell, No Excuses and loads more. Think we got Last of My Kind and Your Decision too. They were all on top form and seemed really surprised and humbled at the awesome reaction they got. It was an excellent crowd, everyone singing and with no agro twats.

The encore was just solid gold win, including Angry Chair going into Man In the Box, and later on an epic Would?. They finished with a blinding Rooster that had the whole place singing along.

Bloody fantastic, definitely one of my gigs of the year. :D

I am pretty obsessed with AiC. I grew up listening to them, thinking I'd never get a chance to see them perform after the death of Layne in 2002, but alas...William joined the band and now I can enjoy both the classic tunes and new stuff time and time again...live! I've seen them three times, and I have tickets for this Saturday to a sold out show, fifth row seats :D I'm also seeing them in May with Stone Temple Pilots (who I've seen once before). One of my favorite shows ever was one I flew to see in New Orleans...an Unplugged set played by the newly reformed AiC in 2007. It was amazing. I'm definitely on the "no one will ever replace Layne" boat, but I do still love AiC a hell of a lot and I love seeing them live, they rock. So to pay my dues to Layne I made a tribute vid, I'm not sure if anyone is interested but I did get a lot of REALLY classic pics of Layne, many never before seen.

Knebworth, Stevenage, just north of London to be more precise. It wouldn't be worth going to the festival just for AiC, even if you lived nearby, luckily I love the line up :)
