you can download a software which can convert our romaji to hiragana and katakana as well, on www.njstar.com
it suited me perfectly, the only problem is that you need to do a lot of copy/pasting if you wanna chat in japanese for example xD
Does it work for kanji as well? If so, I'll have to give it a go....

haha if you've had it long enough it is really hard to part with.

Don't tell me anything. I printed a 10 page spoiler to help me read it  It's the only way to keep track of all the events and, especially, all the characters. I ordered part 1, 2 & 3 last week, so those should arrive soon...

In theory,it hasn't to be a bad thing but Yuki makes that. Some characters are somekind of...useless...Anyway,it's a good manga!

you can order them in any bookstore. Give them the ISBN number and they can order it. And you can ask them how much it will cost you so that you can save money. (but anything more than 11 euros is a complete rip-off)

I'm kinda hoping I'll be able to buy some in France though... not in Paris (or maybe if I find some, just 1), but the week after that, 'cause I think Paris might just be a tad too expensive ;) .. I don't really care that it's in French, then, 'cause it'll probably even help me with my French literature class :)

They'll be cheaper if you buy them in France. For that very same reason I've bought my Ranma 1/2 collection in Germany. They were only 5 euro a piece in stead of 30. (and they're ridiculously funny ^^ )

Only one more week 'till my AS arrives......

Hi. Nice to meet you!
I'm Japanese and just have read the thread on Muselive.com.
So probably you've already known it.
Well, unfortunately at the moment there's no clip to play :noey:

I guess you guys mean a yellow speaker mark on the page.
Actually it says you can hear a short(30-40seconds) clip IF a speaker mark attatched on the right of a track title.
And there's no tracklist yet.

In the future there might be a clip :D

I saw a promotion video of Tokyo Jihen's 'Shuraba'. It was pretty much the same style as when she was solo .... almost obsessively passionate. I loved it.

They're actually quite handy. You don't have to think about what to wear.

Also, they force you to expres your individuality in another way than clothing. That's a challenge.

I'm quite sure I can find something. Most books here are below 10 euro, but that's also because those books are over 50 years old (but in very good state. I have this book from a Japanese Airline Company, and I thought it was printed about 5 years ago, and I checked, and it was printed in 1965 o.O.. but it was only 3 euro, double-languaged, great stuff :D )
I have found new books on Japanese art and stuff, that were 20/25 euro, but those were also quite huge.

I'll go and have a look for you tomorrow then (I think the shops are closed today)

EDIT: any specific language that you want? A lot of books here are in German, after that comes Dutch, then English, but I'll try and find something in either Dutch or English. The language part is pretty much the only downside of this town, because it's so close to the border, there are a lot of books in German. Oh well.

I went to a Japanese restaurant thursday last week (I didn't go to one in Groningen, unfortunately, because of my brother and sister, they wanted to go the McDonalds, while my parents and me didn't want that :indiff: ... we ended up eating pancakes in a restaurant in the area I live in) ... some great food, loved pretty much all of it :D

You mean you couldn't eat Japanese food that day?
I read in Japanese magazine that Muse's member like Japanese food.
I think Japanese food is characteristic, so I was surprised they like it:eek:

you Japanese folks are so lucky. you get extra tracks on your international album releases (I know imported CDs are expensive, like most things are in Japan, but still...) and when most artist say they've conquered Asia, most likely they've only conquered you...you guys embody all that is Asia for a lot of bands early on in their careers before they become mature enough to realize there's more to Asia than Japan...but all this just means that you'll get bands coming no matter what.

all this even with the language barrier.

whoops, sorry didn't mean to sound bitter. cos nevertheless i'm glad you guys are able to enjoy such a variety of acts. you are an incredibly receptive lot, after all, despite your conservativeness (sic?).

True Japanese who live in Japan is mayby only me now.
You know, in Japan, there are many MUSE's fans and mayby they often access this website.
But they're not active to write on the messagebord because of language barrier, I guess.

I'm lucky because I can get extra tracks and go to concert because they come to Japan once a few year.
But, they don't come often and it's difficult to understand English articles or interviews:'( :

I've had the chance to meet a few Muse fans while I was in Japan. I haven't met many (only 2... :erm:) but they were some of the most enthousiastic fans I've ever seen.

I love Japan and Japanese people and I want to go back there more than anything, but the trip would be so horribly expensive... T.T

Anyway, I'll keep saving money untill I have enough to travel to Japan. That might take a couple of years, though. I've been broke ever since the last time I went.

and no, I couldn't eat Japanese that day, because my brother thought it was too expensive (even though it wasn't -we checked), and he kept saying that, and my sister thought you could only get raw fish there, which she hates, so she didn't want to go either.
Sometimes I really dislike those two :indiff:

English is being taught in all schools, but there are very few persons who feel comfortable speaking it. You will find a lot of people wanting to practice their english with you and you should prepare for a lot of pointing in order to explain things. Being good at Hints helps. A lott!

Tokyo is an amazing city. I miss it's polluted air every day still. There's nothing like the smell of smog in the morning of a hot summer day, honestly.
I have a strange love for Shinjuku, which forms most of the Tokyo skyline. Great for shopping, but also for being overwhelmed by all the sounds and colours around.

One thing I don't miss about Tokyo is the crossing in front of Shibuya station. It still turns up in my nightmares every now and then. Way too many people...

What I miss most are my friends and school. It was so much fun!

I went to Joshibi high school. It was a lot of fun! It was like any other high school, but with a lot of art classes. I had never made an oil painting before I came there, but in art class we made about 8 that year. I took some of them home with me to Holland, but not all for they were quite heavy.
I still use some of the techniques we learned in design class. In fact, I'm making something right now.
I mainly studied Japanese though. I did that during the classes that were too difficult for me to understand. I studied using the Kumon method, maybe you know it.

I liked kokubunji. It's calm, but still near enough to the shopping centres of Tachikawa. I fell in love with all the pedestrian bridges of Tachikawa (I'm such a country girl sometimes  )

I had to change it because my new laptop didn't allow me to log in with kanji :(

I find kanji the most difficult in Japanese language. I have only learned about 100, so everytime I see a text in Japanese I can't read half of it because I don't understand the kanji that are used.

It all depends on what you want. I don't know how old you are, but if you want to do a high school exchange you should do so before you finish high school in your own country.

I went with YFU. (www.yfu.org) YFU and AFS are the only non-profit voluntary organisations that do exchange programs on a large scale. I have contacted both and eventually decided for YFU.

The best advice I can give you is to look around and gather innformation from lots of different places. Search the internet, make some phonecalls, ask questions. I know that YFU organises information meetings where you can talk to former exchange students and other people that could tell you what you'd like to know.

You don't have to be able to speak Japanese before you go on an exchange program. a language course is included and often your school there can arrange private Japanese lessons.

I got placed on Joshibi high school by accident. On my application form I had written that I liked art a lot. that I liked the process of creating something. YFU Japan decided that Joshibi would be the right place for me. I'm still very thankfull for that.

oooh, long post...

It may be a long post but it was full of all the right helpful information. :D

Thank you!

I'm 15 (I will be 16 in December), and I could in theory finish high school next June, but to take 10 months out of school time isn't an option as we have two year courses from 14-16 and 16-18, but I could take a year out between high school and college (I would be 16 then). It's either that or after college/6th form (6th form is college but in your own high school) but then I would be 18, and finished school ready to go to Uni.

That paragraph is complicated

I hope I won't be too old to do a high school exchange when I'm 16/17 :(

Right now I am checking out the websites and have MSN'd the links to my mum. :D

But if she or other Japanese read here, I want to talk them!

She create this thread after all!She is Rainbow and, actually, she's living in Canada, but she is from Kyoto,I think,I don't remember very well...

You so young!!wow!
I'm not familiar with high school exchange, but I could help you if you want to get about Japanese info or some sort of things;)
You could do that you want. You have many occasions to do something because you're young;)

:D

Hehe, thanks! That is really helpful of you! Thanks to shiroitenshi, me and my mum have already started the process, so who knows maybe next year I'll be in Japan (!!!)

I was reading that they have lots of customs in Japan, and if I go, I didn't want to do anything without realising that it is impolite! But I'm sure it won't be hard to get used to it all. :D

I was just wondering, is it common for people to not eat meat or fish in Japan?

The best way to make sure you do nothing too impolite is to watch how other people do things. It has saved me many times.

But most important: Don't be afraid to make mistakes. Everything is new to you, so it's only natural for you not to fully understand everything. Ask if you're not sure and, if something does go wrong, just appologize. People will understand that you did not do it on purpose and they will appreciate the effort you're making.

I hope it works out with the exchange thing. When I decided that I would go to Japan I had only 4 months left before I left!

One of the reasons I chose for high school exchange is because college exchange would be a whole lot more expensive (about 4000 euros more :stunned: ). Also it was just the right time for me. I really needed it.

It's said lerning Japanese is so difficult because it have Kanji,Hiragana, and Katakana or grammer is different to some western languages.

Cool :D ... if I ever go to Japan, that's one of the things I want to see :D

4000 euros more! So for me, college exchange is definitely out of the question, but I don't mind! A high school exchange sounds funner for some reason. :D

I e-mailed one of the people working at YFU and turns out I am able to do the high school exchange either next year or in three years, depending on what my mum says.

Awwwww!
There are many messages!I read all but I couldn't understand all...:(
Recently I'm in a slump about my English...

Of course I know Yokohama!Actually,my friends and I are planning a travel to Japan next year and we want to visit at first that zone,Tokyo and sorroundings. We want to visit Kyoto,Osaka,Nara and Himeji if we have time(and money  ).We will let Kyushuu and Hokkaido for the next time(although I really want to go to Hokkaido...).The cheapest thing we have found so far is a 8-day stay for 1.200€...

Wow!That's nice!!
If you'll come to Yokohama or Tokyo, I can guide you in there!
Last year I went to Kyoto,Osaka and Nara as trip. These cities are neighbors. So you can travel cheaper.
And Hokkaido...1.200€! I think that's a little expensive. But when I go traveling I stay YH or some sort hostel. So my opinion may be a little strange.Maybe, in general the cost may be cheaper.

I was just wondering, is it common for people to not eat meat or fish in Japan?

You're a vegetalian, is that right?I think almost Japanese understand about like you. But, for instance, almost restaurants don't have for vege menu.So you may think it's troublesome. But you don't worry:) People will understand and help you.

I'm not sure if KtK is a vegetarian, but I think he/she(??) was just wondering about what is eaten in Japan?

I read in a magazine here (this month's Quest, it has an article about Japanese food :D ), that meat isn't eaten very much in Japan, because some emperor decided not to about 700 years ago, and everybody followed the emperor, and it didn't change untill the last century, or the 19th century, when Japan became more open, and more western-orientated. Though fish is eaten a lot.

and Anno69, feel free to ask if you don't understand something, I'm sure we'll all try and help you out, I know I will

Konnichi wa to all of you!How is it going?aaaah,I have really remembered you lately reading manga,I can tell you!I'm reading the 8th volume of Dragon Head and, well,I'm not going to spoil you the plot but there is an article about buildings of Tokyo and sorroundings, like the Landmark Tower in Yokohama(this goes for you,anno69!I didn't it's the highest building in Japan-and it has the fastest elevator too ),the Tochô Biru(remembering Angel Sanctuary or Boogiepop Phantom...),the Shinjuku Center Building, the Keiô Plaza Hotel, the Shinjuku Mitsui Building, the Shinjuku Sumitomo Building...and,of course, the Tokyo Tower! And reading the last volume of Please Save My Earth,I read that the two most prestigious universities in Japan are the Tokyo and the Keiô ones.Is that true,anno69?

Hehe, thanks! That is really helpful of you! Thanks to shiroitenshi, me and my mum have already started the process, so who knows maybe next year I'll be in Japan (!!!)

Lucky, lucky you!Now I remember why sometimes I die because of jealousy in this thread*dies*.

Cool ... if I ever go to Japan, that's one of the things I want to see

Well,if I ever go to Japan, the last thing I would see would be the Spain Theme Park,if it existed  .Oh my,I haven't gone to Japan to see flamenco dancers, bullfighting and eat jamón serrano and Spanish omelette... .

oooh, you guys are all so lucky! You can go to Japan, with friends, or on exchange, or even live there, and I'm stuck here

Oh,well,it's very hard to me to get there yet,Charlotte,so I really understand you.Actually,I'm afraid I'll have to wait till I finish my degree and work at least a year to go.I have not time to get a job.And,wow,4000 € for a college exchange...Aaaawww,I want to win the lottery:( ...or a TV contest!Actually,my friends and I are thinking about it.Seriously! That can show you how mad we are about going there...

If you'll come to Yokohama or Tokyo, I can guide you in there!

Thank you very much :D.I'm sure I'll will.Actually, the 1.200€ stay is a guided tour but we don't want that,we prefer going on our own...and it will better if we can find some help from a Japanese person like you :D!

The 1.200€ stay is for Tokyo only and,as I told you before,it's a guided tour,so we don't want that.Actually,my friends and I think the same as you.We think it would be cheaper to go to hostels and the like(and that way we would really feel the Japanses way of life).Maybe we'll have to sleep in those tiny capsules of Tokyo... .I'm asking Mariko to help us to make the stay cheaper(and you'll help will be welcome as well),because we realize the really expensive thing is the travel to Japan.

I read in a magazine here (this month's Quest, it has an article about Japanese food ), that meat isn't eaten very much in Japan

That's really funny because it's supposed that one of the best meats in the world is the veal from Kobe...By the way,I have to eat sukiyaki and tonkatsu!I have to go to a Japanese restaurant soon, you know...

and Anno69, feel free to ask if you don't understand something, I'm sure we'll all try and help you out, I know I will

I agree!Don't let the language to be a barrier! And,that way, everyone can learn more about English!

Oh,I'm reading a lot about the Livedoor affair in Japan, the trial and so on.And about the son of Kiko, that will stop the reform to allow the little Aiko to be princess in the future...By the way,I think Aiko will be really beautiful when she will be older!

That's all for now!Take care!Hugs and kisses!Love and Peach!

I know that fish is eaten a lot in Japan, so I was worried that it would be a problem -Hello. :)
I think people's knowledge about vegetarians is similar to the western countries, or little less. Average Japanese family may be able to provide vegetable dishes, but maynot know things like, strict vegetarians don't take non-veg soup stock, dairy, nor eggs, for example. The best you can do, is write up what you can not (or can) eat, rather than explaining what's 'vegetarian' is. :)

By the way, I've stayed in a temple where the monks cook vegetarian food for the guests. you should try if you have a chance.

"Rockin' on Japan" is the most popular Japanese rock music magazine. This site is only Japanese,so it may be difficult to understand the contents. But you can know what band is popular in Japan because some artist names are Ro-ma or English, you can understand these.

that depends on what you're into. do you like stuff with lots of fighting, stuff being blown up, adrenaline, apocalyptic elements, sometimes futuristic, mechs? or do you prefer stuff that are quiet, pretty, mysterious, thought-inducing and sometimes filled with folklore (but isn't fast-paced by extension--studio ghibli works fall under this category in my books, btw)? or maybe you like those weird, out-of-this-world stuff? or the funny, nonsensical ones? historical bloody edo-period stuff? slice-of-life stuff perhaps? romance? magic, demons and vampires? crossovers? or do you like most of them, if not all, like i do?

well, not exactly everything that you mentioned. I do like mystery, drama, weird, magic, vampires (:D:D), anything of that, combinations of them, whatever. It doesn't have to include all of it either.
I'm quite easy with films, as long as it isn't like western slapstick ('comedy' as they call it... American Pie, that stuff, that's just awful).

Howl's Moving Castle is a great movie, not perfect, but it's Ghibli style after all!I really liked it too^^.If you like vampires, you should really see "Blood:The Last Vampire" and "Vampire Hunter D:Bloodlust".Other good movies, apart from Ghibli ones..."Metropolis" is maybe(only maybe) my favourite anime movie.I have seen it too much times:rolleyes: ... ."Jin-Roh" is also wonderful. The second movie of Patlabor was quite good too,a great political-military thriller.I'm a great fan of Satoshi Kon,so I recommend you "Perfect Blue","Millenium Actress" and "Tokyo Godfathers"."Ghost in the Shell" is great too...and many more...huh,I'm such a harcore fan... .

Ring, yes, I saw it, American version and Japanese version, I found both not that interesting.

Today I saw Howl's Moving Castle... I loved it :D . the animation looked great, the story was great, though sometimes a bit weird, but it could've easily been a dream of mine, except better. Considering my dreams don't have Howl in it :(

It's a horror movie and popular in Japan. When I watched it,I screamed out over and over!!
It remaked in US but I don't know details:(

I watched both of them and the original version is much better than the US one!Actually,my mum and I have watched it three times or so...

I know  ... they were both 9.99 at first, but this shop has tons of dvds with this sticker on it, so if you get 2 dvd's, the second is for half the price :D ...which made it 15,-.

I think I might have figured what I want to do after high school by the way... go and study Japanese :D ... And this course also has half a year of study in Kyoto, 7 hours of Japanese lessons a week, business, rights(/laws), informatics :D ... though it's a tad expensive, with the going to Japan for half a year and all, but, yeah well, I guess it's worth it ;)
I found out about this school yesterday evening, and I've just been bouncing around since then

Hmm, I was wondering if anyone could help me here. I have to do a small project (that's a part of a bigger project) for my artwork, so the small project will be on manga, and I was wondering, in Japan are there any particularly famous manga artists? The artist has to be famous in his/her country, and I'm not really sure how it works in Japan. Any help would be lo-verly :)
