Someone came up with a clever little computer simulation using clock parts. Despite being a random program it showed results that followed evolution. The clock parts evolved, as said the software was not programmed for any particular outcome, the code is on the internet and people are free to check it if they feel the need (and have the knowledge and time).

Does it matter if its living? No, providing it can move and reproduce and the genes in the scrap metal can mutate. As scrap metal cannot move and reproduce it will not produce a car - in the same way that if you put 15 billion dead cells in a field they will not produce a multicellular organism - they will not produce anything, they are dead and so will just degrade.

Also the theory is not at all similar to saying "put a ton of scrap metal in a field and in 15 million years there will be a car"

A better paralell would be "put a ton of scrap metal that has the characteristics of being alive (requires ability to move and reproduce and mutate) and in 15 million years you will have something more complex than a pile of scrap metal."

Evolution does not claim to predict the outcome, it is the random aquiring of characteristics through various methods - it also does not have a direction. An animal can just as easily "de-evolve" as "evolve" - however natural selection usually ensures than any traits that are not benefitial to the animal get wiped out.

This isn't intended as a flame - but if you think the UN is representative of countries abilities to unite to get things done, you should probably look a little closer into it ;) I notice you say you don't know that much about politics, well, that might be a place to start ;)

It shouldn't take too much research to see that the UN has a very difficult time getting anything of value done..... there's suqabbling when it's time to pass serious resolutions, and the ones that pass are usually very watered down (it's hard to make any sort of bold statement when there are so many different opinions/views/motives that have to be taken into account)... and when resolutions are disobeyed there is rarely any consequence for it (most likely you'll just get a new resolution to declare that they are resolute in their resolve that you should obey the original resolution!)

If you want 'the truth' then the current theory of evolution, which is Darwin's Theory updated with the info we've learnt since, is probably the most widely accepted thing in any scientific dicipline backed up with literally millions of peices of evidence and not a single thing yet discovered has disproven it. It's the closest thing to a truth humans are capable of revealing.

In the case of Infowars and the like it's because they're pushing a political ideology onto you. There's right-wing conspiracies which revolve around government co-operation and there's left-wing conspiracies to do with law and the lack of freedom. Not only that but they earn a fuck-tonne in advertising which capitalise on the fear the stories they write are intended to produce.

In the case of alternative health/spirituality it's because they have their own products to sell.

Then there's a number that are paranoid/paranoid-schizophrenics which can cause people to have delusions of ganduer (that they're the only one who can see 'the truth' and everyone else is a 'sheeple'), believe chance doesn't exist and everything is down to some orchestrated design and that everything is out to get them.

There are some genuine conpiracies out there, for example the Lockerbie bombings involved a complete stitch up of Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi, none of the witness statements in court add up, several witnesses were paid by the CIA and had meetings with them and subsequently their statements changed. All this is documented fact, plain to see for anyone who compares the original trial with the appeal trial. But these are incredibly complex matters that take decades to investigate, even with a team of top quality investigative journos behind it. I agree a lot of the popularity came from the sort of "shock" of the subjects. But he also made a lot of pretty obscure ideas much more accessible to a public audience who otherwise might not have had the time to research and discover them for themselves. When the Da Vinci Code came out, people were suddenly flocking to all these places mentioned in the book. Even though it's a work of fiction, there's a sense of empowerment in it. I feel like a similar thing happens with conspiracy writings and documentaries online. Someone else has done the "research," it's a controversial subject, and it gives you a sense of "stickin' it to The Man." There's a certain appeal in being the underdog and going against the grain.
