View Full Version : Australian Bands
Right, Aussie bands don't enough recognition over seas. Apart from Silverchair, The Vines and AC/DC I'm sure most people couldn't name any more Aussie bands. So this thread is a little something for you to find out about decent Australian bands. If you know one, let otehrs know and tell them your opinion.
Good bands to find out about:
Grinspoon
Frenzal Rhomb
The Butterfly Effect
A Ghost Devotion
Killing Heidi

Im loving aussie bands at the moment. The big 2 for me are Something For Kate and Powderfinger and are both really cool and different. Rocking stuff but the vocalists really give both bands a clear identity from each other and a lot of bands around. Worth checking out :)

I didn't forget Jet, I just think they're like the Darkness, don't like the music, but they're good live.
And The Distillers are and American badn, its just Brodie who's Australian.

Yeah, i`ve heard a bit of that side project stuff.....pants
Poor ole Daniel Johns can`t play much now....because of his arthritis, he can only do one quick song at odd shows...then his hand kills after 15 min...i`m not sure if he`s got any better yet. :(

I dont think so.... because I AM !!! Hahahaha
ah well, I like "Somewhere down the barrel"... it's a cool song, the others suck though. It's usual for Daniel making such things, i doesn't mean he can't play anymore. He already did that side project called "I can't belive it's not rock" with Paul Mac and it was kinda the same. Why not? I still think hes one of the talentest musicians ever.
And yes, Daniel already recovered from his arthritis, saw them live last year and it was gorgeous!

Here are my little list of recommended aussie acts:
-powderfinger
one of my all time favourite band and has been for years now. Internationalist rocks my socks off.
-something for kate
it's a like em or hate em band, and they took a while to grow on me, but I love them now... mainly for the lyrics and paul's voice
-john butler trio
pickapart... what a song.
-living end
Brings out the inner brat and 13 year old out of you... amazing live band. chris cheney is an amazing guitarist.
-grinspoon
-pacifier (aka shihad)
yeah, from NZ, but they are our shihad.. hehe... awesome live shows... johnny is the king when it comes to rock moves.
-regurgitator
-george
how good is katie's voice?!
Then there is the heap of other good live pub bands the are scattered around... including Avenza... it's a mate of mines friends band that play some gigs around melbourne. I'm not just saying they are good for that reason, I was really impressed when I saw them live... muse fans may like certain elements of their music.. that and they did a cover of plug in baby at one of their gigs once, so I heard.
john butler is the best. he reminds me of jesus

Gyroscope!!!! - my fave band, they are awesome, supported thursday and poison the well a while ago and were meant to support blink 182 and brand new.
sleepy jackson are awesome.
eskimo joe have new stuff out, its pretty good
End of Fashion - not heaps popular and kind of poppy, but really worth checking out live.
i like the Dissociatives song, its catchy.
THE CAT EMPIRE!!!! ok, they are hip hop and reggae and stuff, but i saw them live and they are amazing, best concert i have ever been to. apart from powderfinger- nothing beats powderfinger live.

george's new album should be available everywhere, unless it hasn't been released yet. it's called unity.
and gyroscope are heaps awesome, go watch them when you watch blink in september mort. i went to Rock-it, a festival where blink were meant to play, and it was hilarious the amount of people who had home made blink shirts on, and were dressed as nurses. i even saw some 12 year old girls crying when they got the news.

Dreamshifter r 1 to watch total original sound some quotes from industry heavy waits. 1)I wouldnt want to be a band playing after these guys, 2)suonds like Emerson Lake & Palmer meets Metalica 3)They defy u not to watch them etc. check m out

george - underrated. Katie Noonan's voice is angelic.
silverchair - undisputed geniuses of Australia rock.
Jet - pompous rock. Beautiful ballads, and very sincere.
Cat Empire - a bit of everything! Reggae, funk, rock...
Regurgitator - punk, funk, rock, pop, great band!
Ben Lee - folk rock/pop.
The Morning After Girls - hey, they supported MUSE's sideshow in Melbourne!
That should do! he he! Jet, The Vines and The Living End are doing their "Aussie Invasion" tour in the US! Any Americans heard them?

Ram Jam or whoever did it in the 70's yeah. But it was origionaly writte in the 30's.
I really dig Wolfmother. At first I though, 'Led Zeppelin rip-offs' but they're too good that I cannot hate.

Well im a huge powderfinger fan... im even in their new dvd at one point.
So thats one aussie band i love and i think everyone else should.
Um another would be Nathan Gaunt. Now most australians dont know who he is because hes a perth local band and no one seems to care about perth.
But check him out. His stuff is amazing.
Something for kate are always good.
cant think of anymore really good ones right now.. they'll come to me later.
don't mind some of powderfinger's stuff..my sister owns all their albums and insisted on buying me a ticket to their gig last December. not bad live.
Regurgitator seem heaps fun. checked out their bubble home a few times but only because I walking towards 7-11 for a slurpee. I was also there after the Muse gig and saw a few people sporting a Muse tee...hello if you are reading this. hehe :D

Am I the only one here that really dislikes The Spazzys? I think they're bloody awful!
i haaaaaaaaaate the spazzys too....they are ghastly.
there are some artists (i use that term lightly) that really have a bad effect on me when i hear their gear...(like, i want to run away and scream, or after being exposed to such horrendous music....go and sit quietly in a dark room, and just take deep breaths, and and try to recover from the event)...anyhow...they include:
The Spazzys
Blondie
The Cat Empire
I don't know what it is about these particular artists, but I full on react badly to them...urgghh.....yuk. It's more that hate than i feel toward their music...if that's possible.
Actually, I do have a valid reason for hating blondie...but the other artists...I don't know what brought on the strong hatred for them...
(btw, i realise that blondie isnt an oz artist, thank goodness!...)

nice to see there are a few silverchair fans in here, it seems the fans are starting to dwindle, but they are an awesoem aussie band, great talent (imagine daniel johns and bellamy teaming up together, that would be my dream!!!!!) also THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT!!!!!! absolutely rock, awesome debut album "begins here" great live!!!!! recomend them to all!!!! as many of u said, powderfinger is another rockin aussie act, and I very much love little birdy (so in love with her voice it's bloody amazing) I saw little birdy supporting the dissociatives, although many ppl do not like the dissociatives, I actually quite like em, but it's prob also coz i have a great deal of respect for daniel johns! :D another aussie band to watch out for........
PSYCHO ZYDECO he he...it's me dads band, they're actually gunna release their first single (will be a double A-side) been around for over 10 yrs now, if u are interested go to psycho zydeco (http://www.zydeco.com.au)

Hmm - Powderfinger can be good, sometimes. Judging by their success here it's surprising they've made pretty much no inroads overseas whatsoever. Other bands?
Well, Mort was right on the money in the beginning - Grinspoon, Frenzal Rhomb, The Butterfly Effect are all great live bands...heh, I was at TBE's album launch, got the limited ed album and a signed poster from the boys.
Love Outside Andromeda - Good on the person who mentioned these guys. It'll probably be impossible to track down now, but try to find their "Something White And Sigmund" EP, from when they were known as Andromeda. Or just get the album. Sublime.
Grinspoon - Ah, what can I say? They rock. Forgot to mention - New Detention.
Gyroscope - Great to see some new rock talent.
Spiderbait - BAAM BA LAAAAAAAAAAAM!
Sarah Blasko - Beautiful music, very soft, very emotive.
Shihad - sure, they're NZer's, but we've adopted them...I mean, they live in Melbourne. Great live band, just a pity that they don't play any U18 gigs in Brisbane
There's a heap of others I've forgotten, but these are great.

Brings out the inner brat and 13 year old out of you... amazing live band. chris cheney is an amazing guitarist.
We don't need someone to tell us what to do....
I saw them live in Seattle a few months ago. They were supporting band to Jet and another band (it's late; memory cells not synapsing) but were clearly the hit of the night. Energetic set, great guitar, and the stand-up bass player is brilliant!
Well, Mort was right on the money in the beginning - Grinspoon, Frenzal Rhomb, The Butterfly Effect are all great live bands...heh, I was at TBE's album launch, got the limited ed album and a signed poster from the boys.
Gyroscope - Great to see some new rock talent.
The Butterfly Effect are playing The Arena in Febuary. Only $20 on door. :D
And Sunk Lotto are playing Her Majestys Bar on the 13th of Jan.
If you like Gyroscope then I say go for Something With Numbers. Me loving.

i would have to say that THE LIVING END are the best aussie band going around atm. they kick ass live, and the dvd they just released is pretty awesome aswell.
also i think 'five star laundry' by motorace is one of the best aussie rock albums ever
I'd have to say that The Living End are deffinetly not the best aussie band around. I've seen them play live and it was okay. Nothing spectacular. And Modern Artillery is very very bad. The self titled album is great mind.
Gyroscope are an awsome live band. And Something With Numbers have some bloody brilliant songs. Some of the best of 2004 easily. I realy want to see them live.

Hey, I love Something With Numbers. They're from the Central Coast where I grew up. I saw their first show back in 2001. They weren't all that good but then again first show together so I forgive them. A couple of them used to be in a band called Mi'lac, I believe.

Watch out for an EP (debut) by a young lady from Melbourne whos' name is Liz Bradley. The EP is titled 'DIRTY' and the title track absolutely rocks! All guitars and vocals are by Liz... she has written the songs and she has produced the EP aswell. Give it a couple of weeks and I will post a website you can go to to check Liz, her disc and her gigs out. (You've all guessed it's me, right!) If I didn't have so much faith in this collection of songs... I wouldn't be advertising it here! (Are we allowed to do that?)

Frenzal Rhomb is a pretty good punk band, but after checking out Grinspoon and The Butterfly Effect it looks like they have little to offer. A better Australian band than all three of those is The Living End.
The Living End.
Not after the third album. That was abismal. However the new one is shaping up to be rather groovy.
And Grinspoon have loads to offer. Grab the first 3 albums. Specially Guide to Better Living and Easy. They are awsome, balls out albums. And they are an amazing live band.
bachrock
24-11-2005, 06:43 AM
Guide to Better Living sounds a lot more metal than the stuff I was hearing from their site. Doesn't sound that great though. What's wrong with The Living End's latest album? It's got some good songs on it, especially "The Room." What do you think of Grinspoon's latest cd Best in Show? I'm downloading it because that's all I can find.

Well Guid to Better Living was a very low budget recording in the first place. Easy was the higher budget one and they still sound very raw. What is there to think about wiht Best in Show? Its just the singles compilation. An I ahvent heard the covers. But they;re supposed to be shtie.
Modern Artillery was just a cack album. Very unorgional and Cheney seemed to just want to put in an excesivly long solos that are just annoying, in every song.
bachrock
24-11-2005, 06:53 AM
I'm curious about these excessively long solos. I didn't know his solos being too long before. Which ones do you think are? He's a damn good guitarist - I'm glad he does a lot of guitar solos.

All the guitar solos are excesivly long becuase they're not needed, at all. The fact that they're in every song on that album makes it bloody annoying. Yes, he is an awsome guitarist, but he doesn't have to show off the fact.
bachrock
24-11-2005, 09:14 AM
I've heard exactly what you've said before. I'm a musician. There are so many things to think about when writing a song. If I were to do a longer solo it wouldn't have to be to show off. I can understand that if he put a same length solo in every song at the same spot in every song that it would be repetative. I'm not sure why you say they're not needed or why you're jumping to the showing off conclusion. I don't know what the guitarist's intentions were behind them, but do you have to have one? Interesting.

I'm jumping to that conclusion because how many albums do you know where every song has a fairly complex solo in it? Not that many. Every song on Modern Artillery as Cheyney's "key" soloing in it. It just gives me the shits, to be blunt. Plus I don't find the songs themselves very interesting. Thats why I'm liking the new stuff thats coming out. its more like the self titled albums style of songs.
bachrock
24-11-2005, 09:59 AM
One good reason you don't hear a lot of complex solos is that either the guitarists can't play them or they wouldn't be fitting in the songs. None of this is true with The Living End. What do you mean by "key" soloing? It's ok that you don't like the soloing. You obviously don't have to justify it - you can simply not like it, but your reasons just aren't doing it for me I guess. Where have you heard the new stuff? I've only heard one song. It was called "What's on your radio" or something like that.

By key I mean his style of soloing that he's had from day one.
And your point of it fitting into the song... i don't believe most of them do. They're unneeded. But thats only in Modern Artillery. I'll say it again, the first two albums were ace.
And yeah I've only heard Whats on your Radio but also I can't Give you What You Want was a quick step back to the style of the self titled album. And I really liked it.

Hmmm, i wouldn't say its that good. I love Gyroscope. The first album is ace. Bu he style, even though it shows how much they've grown and want to try some differnet things, specially the bassist, isn't as good for me. Incidentally, who are the Red Paintings? What sound are they?
depends what stuff of theirs you listen to :erm: the newest EP is definitely my favourite though  its got a more produced sound though, i suppose. They're sort of folksy, especially their raw album. they have a violin, cello, guitar, bass, drums & singer. when they have concerts the girls dress up as geisha :D
and theyre the best band ever to see live.
yeah.
especially when theres like 10 people in the audience, and most of them are just travelling with the band.

I'll keep an ear out for them then - do they get any air time on the J?

I love winding up at gigs like that... I always have the best fun *reminisces too* sigh  I was at a Dallas Frasca gig like that... she has an amazing voice - she can do anything with it! Her usual bassist pulled out at the last minute, so she flew a friend from Brisbane to ADELAIDE for the 2 shows she did... that's how I wound up there - a friend of mine has a huge crush on the bassist :D teeheehee

This is what I mean, 14 pages of an Australian bands thread and no mention of the go-betweens. As a brit who considers the go-betweens just a really good band regardless of where they hail from, I'm just curious have you genuinely never heard them or are they, you know, uncool dadrock.

Ok, the Wolfmother craze is now officially out of control. This past weekend on the Channel V Big Day In they played Minds Eye every 15 minutes without fail. Talk about over-exposure.

sigh.
big day in was really shite.
arseness.
i just wanted to see the franz and grates sets :(
though i did see one grates song, and my sister was filmed  and a whole 2 franz songs.
Ugggh. Mix it up, FFS.
Even as a big fan of the Wolves, I don't think I could listen to Mind's Eye twenty times a day or whatever. Same goes for any of my favourite songs, really.
Hehe. Spiderbait are good.

My friend hooked up with Andrew from Wolfmother, then heard on the radio that he had to leave Big Day Out early because his girlfriend had gone into labour. :stunned:

The Shake my arse. He's so singing "The shag before i sleep."
ahhh...the whole Wolfmother thing has gone way out of control, i agree. i saw them live a year or so ago, and they were fantaastic, then they got all mainstream and they seem to have lost their charm. still love that album though. (ha, i have one of the drummers sticks...)
Australian music...1 word....COG. absolutely awesome.

Unfortunatly, the album gets old really quickly. Its ace to listen through the first time, but after that it deteriorates. Although i do here they're ace live.
i dont listen to them that often, i like savouring things. the beauty of it is that there are 2 cog albums! they are amazing live, the lead singer is mad.
