View Full Version : Stephen King
I love this author, his books are brilliant and is a fantastic storyteller.
he came up with IT which is the most terrifying concept ever and Carrie is a total classic.hes also really good at writing books that arnt horror like The Green mile and the Shawshank redemption.
very rarely tho, will a film adaptation do the book justice tho apart from the Shawshank redemption and The Shining of course.
i jus finnished reading The Tommyknockers, best book ive ever read.
anybody eles like him?

There is gonna be a new one with Johnny Depp in, Secret Window.. its from a novella but I haven't read that one. I loved Rose Red.. and I really enjoyed the Stand, even though the Devil looked a bit like Russ Abbot. For reading the actual novels, I loved Cujo (way better than the wimp out ending of the movie) and Firestarter. Oh and Misery of course (it was Kathy Bates by the way :) )
ahh but you must, you are a tierd person who needs sleep ,then the tommyknockers can have their way with you......lol

Insomnia is (I think) my favourite King novel. So much more you can read into that underneath the story itself. I think King's on the same trip as me, he's trying to impart messages :)
Ooh, a film to Secret Window (novella was titled Secret Window, Secret Garden). Probably will be crap then, as it's a fantastic story and they never come out well in films, apart from Pet Sematary. Even King says he dislikes a lot of what they do to his stories when they make them into films. Especially The Shining - he HATED that one. Said Kubrick had made it look like Jack was insane from the beginning (well, easily done, casting Jack Nicholson...) instead of the Overlook being a haunted hotel affecting Jack.
When King is involved in writing the screenplay, the films generally come out better. But he's not always involved (how daft).
He had long been my favourite author, due mostly not to his stories but how he told them, how he explored people's heads. I've read a lot of better authors in the last few years, but I still have a soft spot for old beardy Stephen :)
oh yeah!! they didnt get me :D and slept till 1 :D

Anyone read "Everything's Eventual"?
Amazing stories.
I like short tales with twists in them, and the whole big is just one lovely treasure...
The story about the black man was horrifying.
Something Bradbury-sh about it, but I can't grasp what...

Thats exactly what I think about the Kubrick The Shining.. but have you seen the mini-series of it? You can get it on DVD and its so so much better. You really get the damage thats being done to this normal guy. I think King was involved in the screenplay too. Generally if he pops up somewhere in the movie you know you're alright, I reckon LOL The Green Mile was a fabulous adaptation though - everything looked exactly how I had imagined it when I read the book.
I got Nightmares and Dreamscapes and my favourite story from it was Dolan's Cadillac.. that was excellent. That said, I'd sooner read a full novel, cos where he really excels is setting the scenes and in a full novel he has more time to do it.
haha, oh the shame- sunday morning tv :D

Haven't seen Carrie, but I did see the Langoliers.
I can hardly remember it now, but I read the story years and years ater, and the story is awesome.
The Shining is among the scariest films I've ever watched.
Oooh, and has anyone seen Rose Red (he wrote the screenplay)?
Very cheese effects, but I loved the whole thing.
Beautiful house.
Pet Sematary... Well, the ghostie guy did give me a scare... And murderers in the form of little children are always frightening.
The Dreamcatcher was a terrible disappointment.

There's a huge King collection in the bookshop I visit, but it's all in Russian...
And this is one of the cases when you have to read the original, because everything of his loses a lot in the translation; otherwise I'd have read everything he's ever written by now.
And, yes, Nicholson was excellent.
I don't like him very much (he manages to frighten me whatever part he plays, no matter how nice. Hell, he even managed to scare me in... God, what's the name of his new film? Something's Gotta Give) but eeee!
I've heard that King dislikes the film, but I think that it does the book justice.

I love misery one of my favourite books ever. Though I can't seem to get into any other of SK's books, i brought gerald's game and started reaidng it but kinda couldn't get into it.
As for film adaptations I agree shawshank's redemption is excellent as well as green mile and misery, I should really watch the shinning only seen parts of it. I did watch the end of pet cementary though - very creepy and icky. The boy was perfectly casted though.

I don't know if someone posted this allready, but there's a new King movie out this week (in Holland anyway) with Johnnie Depp. It's called Secret Window. I read the story some years ago and think it's one of the best stories King ever wrote! I hope the movie is half as good. :)

Is that the novella from "Four Past Midnight" with Langoliers (sp?), Library Policeman and Sun Dog?

I could be wrong about the title of the book I mentioned - it's just a collection of stories, so maybe it's just a compilation that was put together here...

I think he's great too, but I didn't think The Shining movie was as good as the book. I read the book every night for a couple of weeks or so and it was way scarier than the movie. Particularly the room 217....I read it six years ago, so I don't know if this is the exact room...but that part scared the crap out of me. When I was watching the movie, I was too excited that I had just seen some boobies, that I didn't get scared when I saw her decaying like that....wasn't even thinking about the decaying really, it was more like "...Boobies...."

Stephen King is BRILLIANT. I am actually currently on a Stephen King kick where I'm trying to read everything he wrote. Fact is, not only are his stories great but his language use is to die for. His mastery of English is unbelievable, I often dog ear the pages on which I find his best lines which I plan to transfer to a website... when I'm not too lazy.
The range of his books is incredible as well, ranging from superstitious horror to just the horror of a human mind. "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon" is a book about a girl who was lost in the woods for 9 days, true story too, no ghouls, no Crimson King, just pure raw terror of a child alone in the woods.
His ability to dig into the psyche of the mind is unbelievable as well, as he did with Dream Catcher (movie was SUCH shit in comparisson... such a great begining but such a crap end). But best of all it has to be his sharp sense of humour and his ability to carry an caught reader without sex scenes. Though his VERY rare sex scenes are touching and sweet.
Brava Stephen King
He will be known for being one of the best authors of this century

Joseph... Conrad...
Heart of Darkness...
...Oh, the pain. The bloody fucking pain.
I swear I couldn't get past page 10 or so, and I can't live without books.
I'm not saying he's bad, I just couldn't force myself into liking him. It was so dull that... Gah.
I'm sure he has better things, and that Heart of Darkness is merely the most famous one, yet I have no desire to get anything else of his.

Oh, and about King...
I finished part 7 of the Dark Tower series a few days ago.
Brilliant stuff. Couldn't tear myself away.
I've read some reviews on Amazon, and it seems that many hate the fact that he appeared at all, but I loved it, even remember thinking to myself... Wow, what an unusual idea.
The ending was a little odd, though... Still, worth the time and money spent.

"Aura" is the literary term from Walter Benjamin, which means (roughly) originality and authenticity.

Couple of months of reading i think? i cant remember the first time, the second time i think it took me a month and a bit! i love to read novels though. The first page has like a note (*well 10 pages long!) from stephen king saying that this book is te same as the other "the Stand" but with the bits that were cut out. So i assume there a perfectly good shorter verison out there somewhere!

Stephen King is great, its just a shame that not all the films are done very well. For instance, "Pet Cemetary" is a great book but the film is full of shite actors and misses some of the vital parts of the book (in my opinion).
I cant watch the film IT anymore, it scared the livin hell outta me!
The Dead Zone is a TV series and I think it may take it too far, though I havnt watched it all that much.
I've read many of his books, I think the best may be, erm... The Green Mile or Dolores Claiborne (spl).
