it's probably why they have so much international appeal. i mean, i'm not too pendantic about lyrics when they are in another language

it's probably why they have so much international appeal. i mean, i'm not too pendantic about lyrics when they are in another languageI suppose I just think it's a shame there's this one weak spot in their overall abilities. Not all their lyrics are weak, but some of them are a bit naff. Absolution is using loads of quasi-religious language but none of the songs say a great deal.
NOTE this is my opinion and I know lots of you will disagree...

NOTE this is my opinion and I know lots of you will disagree...
oooh you saved yourself there,
but anyway, i think the lyrics are good occaisionally, i must be the only person in the world who thinks TOADA has tremendous lyrics, even if the song is a little less tremendous, the great thing about muse lyrics is they are so obtuse you can twist them into all sorts of personal meanings, and i do frequently

i reakon that some of the stuff of BHAR is just as good, if not better than some of their older stuff.
for example starlight is easily one of the best songs theyve ever written, and map of the problematique rocks out as hard as ever.
vocally, the best thing ive ever heard is matts singing on the hullaballoo version of showbiz.
musically, the best thing ever is the piano solo on butterflies and hurricanes, with an honerable mention to the guitar solos on thoughts of a dying athiest and sober.
anyone with me?

ok, best muse song....as in singular, not multiple songs, but pick one.
My favorite is Hyper Music and it is perfect to me, but i think their best work is execution commentary.....hahaha...obviously taking the piss, i couldn't peg them with one best....maybe Citizen Erased as the definitive muse-eque song. To me it is the epitomy of what most of muse does, it has piano, drums, bass, guitar, addictive vocals, it is long, it has several tempo and pitch changes and is rather unique....but personally i will always think that Hyper Music is their best...why else would they have done two studio versions? not an extended, but completely different. I think the only other one they came close to doing that with was Shine, also another phenomonal song.
But i still can't definitively decided what could be considered Muse's all around best song.

I've been torn between New Born and Citizen Erased for a long time.. CE is the only song I've ever come across that ranges between so many different moods seamlessly and leaves you feel like you've been on an emotional voyage/rollercoaster. But it edges a little more towards New Born. And I'm also in love with Showbiz. It's so aggressive and fecking fantastic! I love Shrinking Universe too, the falsettos get me weak everytime.. it's constantly on repeat. Muscle Museum is an early favourite of mine for sure, I love the angst, and the lyrics are quite clever lol. And Take A Bow is really awesome, gives me shivers, as Matt constantly points out it doesn't follow traditional songs in the sense that there's nochorus/verse structure, but it manages to work perfectly as a song. Hysteria will always always be a favourite, best build up intro EVER. As will Micro Cuts, not only are the lyrics powerful, but the overall sound is immense, there's so much frustration it's fecking ace how it builds and explodes in the chorus and the end riff. And Space Dementia has the most powerful intro that melds into a terrific, OTT track with amazing piano work. And Fury is a work of art it really is. Class B-side! And so is Hyper Chondriac Music, it's so atmospheric and moving, has actually reduced me to tears it's that beautiful. And City Of Delusion is hugely impressive with it's progression and layered sound that all works so well together. I also love the simplicity (ish) of Hoodoo, there's something haunting about that song it just resonates in my mind for ages afterwards, truly beautiful. For fecks sake there's no way of naming just one best song with a band as brilliant as Muse!! :D :D
I really wish I had just one but it's simply impossible because all of their songs amaze me! Though I hafta say, standing up there marginally higher than the rest is New Born. Something about it makes me feel 'alive' and ready to go insane, the energy in that song is electric and almost tangible (if any of this has made any sense whatsoever :$) Anyways i've rambled enough now, Muse rock, good night....

You start off with some mysterious guitar and drums that leads into an unbeatable bass riff (which may be the best bass riff of all time), with some of the best drums of any muse song. Then comes the vocals and distorted guitar which just blow you away. Then in the chorus the bass is even better than the verse and with its repitition it gets even better!
The guitar that follows is sublime, and the rest of the song is practically a drum solo, with amazing guitar and some of the best ever bass playing. Plus the singing is better than in any Muse song (particularly at the end).
I did not even mention the lyrics <3
I'm talking about Jimmy Kane obviously :)

If they'd made the live versions of DES and Debase Mason's Grog into studio versions, as they were played live, they would be better than the current album versions....
And I agree that Crying Shame > Old Crying Shame

There's a thin line between a favourite song and a song that you consider their best.
For me, it's New Born. It encompasses all the essential qualities of Muse.
I suppose Citizen Erased and City of Delusion deserve special mention.
Apocalypse Please is one helluva epic ride so I guess that may warrant it being the best Muse song.
These songs are all in my top 10 list but non of the above are in my top 2 favourite Muse tracks.
Here's my top 10: (the ones above will be bolded)
Bliss
Fury
New Born
Apocalypse Please

Aaaaah! Forgot Stockholm Syndrome and Map :O
Very, very tough.
1. Sunburn - Never gets any less beautiful the more you hear it.
2. Citizen Erased - They should play this live more. Superb. Wonderful. Words can't describe how great a track this is.
3. Hysteria - Superb intro. Great riff. It just continues to thrill all the way through.
4. Stockholm Syndrome - Headbanging glory!
5. Knights Of Cydonia - It is over 6 minutes but doesn't feel like it. The intensity of the track keeps you inside its bizarrely wonderful realm the whole time.
6. Micro Cuts - Incredible singing. Makes me shudder.
7. Take A Bow - A real grower. At first I found the lyrics a little too unsettling but I got used to them and appreciate it for what it really is now - a political stomper with synths.
8. Map Of The Problematique - Not a big Depeche Mode fan but you can see where this song's influence lies. Great fun to drum to and the lyrics are very good also.
9. The Small Print - "Take, take all your need and I'll compensate your greed with broken hearts.....say, it'll make you insane, and it's bending the truth, you're to blame." Nuff said.
10. Bliss - Ethereal synths and keyboard make this a joy to listen to.
11. Soldier's Poem - Muse find the essence of this song perfectly and the tale of a soldier's broken life fits in wonderfully well.
12. Time Is Running Out - A monster of a bassline and the rest of it aint' bad either.
13. Thoughts Of A Dying Atheist - Nice idea and very open for interpretation.
14. Butterflies & Hurricanes - Proof that Bellamy is one of the best pianists of his generation.
15. Supermassive Black Hole - I personally fail to see how this is so different to what Muse normally do - It's barmy, has plenty of falsetto and is totally Muse.
16. Fillip - A great pop song. Very catcy and easy to listen to.
17. Unintended - Perhaps should be higher (which is testament to how good Muse are). Bellamy captures the listeners' attention and heart in this track.
18. Space Dementia - Like a lot of Muse, it's mad. I love it.
19. Assassin - Cue headbang.
20. City Of Delusion - More proof that Muse are different from so many other bands out there.

The synths in Bliss are much much better than that of Starlight. Starlight's synth sounds are nowhere near as perfect as Bliss'.
It is a universal fact that Bliss is better than most Muse songs and Starlight most definitely falls into that category.

Put simply, Muse isn't my favourite band, although they come in at number 4, but I do believe are the greatest band. Similarly, TIRO is my favourite Muse song, but I believe that KoC is the greatest Muse song. In terms of overall epicness, I would have to agree, musicianship, I would have to agree, lyrics, I would have to agree, and then there's yet another edge. It's ridiculously overplayed stateside, and yet I cease to get sick of it. That's the sign of a classic right there.

Hm, nobody likes the new stuff? At the moment my favourites would be the following:
My #1 favourite song is definitely Undisclosed Desires (I just love the vocoder in the chorus).
And then come songs like Bliss (I love this kind of loop riff they do. It's just 3 chords, if you don't count the chorus), New Born (love the beginning :) ), Uprising (the Matt-choir in the chorus), Supermassive Black Hole (again the vocoder and the electric stile), Stockholm Syndrom, Hysteria (I very much like the second part of the solo, where you can hear 3 guitars playing NOT at the same time^^. But I surely also like the first part of the solo :) ), Resistance...ohhh and Butterflies & Hurricanes of course. I very much like string instruments. And there's also a vocoder in this song :) Haha, they like doing vocoder stuff I guess :D Time is running out. The synths at the beginning are sooo cool.
Sooo, I think that's it. You might have noticed that I very much like Muse^^ Can't wait for the Bern-concert to come <3

Atm I'm really enjoying Fury, but Resistance, IBTY and Exogenesis are all in there, and then there's Shine Acoustic, Map of Your Head, Space Dementia, Escape, Muscle Museum, Sing for Absolution, Unintended, Showbiz, Hysteria, Stockholm Syndrome, Hoodoo, Butterflies and Hurricanes, ...probably loads I've forgotten...oh bloody hell, nearly forgot Newborn.:D And I'm, adding in Unnatural Selection.
Good list!
The bests from each album would have to be (for me):
Showbiz: Sunburn or Muscle Museum
Origin: Megalomania or Micro Cuts
Absolution: Butterflies and Hurricanes or Thoughts of a Dying Atheist
Black Holes: Take a Bow or Knights
The Resistance: Exogenesis

HOLY MUSE!! I couldn't have put it better myself
And btw my favourite seems to be the one I'm listening to at the time :yesey:
but the definite stand outs are:
Stockholm Syndrome
Dead Star
Plug in Baby
Sing for Absolution
Citizen Erased
Knights of Cydonia
Showbiz
Map of the Problematique
Apocalypse Please
Hysteria
OKAY OKAY!!! I must stop myself before I list them all

I think I'd have to say Map Of The Problematique is my favourite. I cried when I first saw it live, mainly because of how beatiful it was and how I can relate to the lyrics and the mood.
And Knights Of Cydonia is an amazing live closer, as is Take a Bow and Stockholm Syndrome.
And, obviously almost all of their early work, most notably Muscle Museum, Sunburn, Citizen Erased, Uno, Bliss, Dead Star, In Your World, Hyper Chondriac Music, Hyper Music, I could go on!

To me, it's Megalomania.
But not in my opinion....here's a more accurate one. Based on it's diversity, progressiveness, and different instruments that all come together, I'd have to go on and say that New Born is Muse's most widely accepted "best song".

Maybe Forced In because it is out of time, they've never done an other song like this (no chorus just an explosion in my ears), that's why I love Forced In so much :D

lol, just made a top 15 somewhere else, but why not try to decide one specific!!
It's really difficult :stunned:
Probably .. Hmm .. I'm kinda addicted to Plug in Baby, New Born and Cave at the moment and they're def' favourites, but not once have I ever been tired of nor skipped Supermassive Black Hole .. But again .. The first time I heard MotP I got some serious goosebumps!
Arrrrghhhhh .. No, I have to go with Supermassive Black Hole !!
It never gets old and the riff is just amazing !!

My favorite is Bliss - the way the arpeggios fade to synth, fade to riff, along with the harmonies and falsetto... all of it is just brilliant. But I wouldn't call it their 'best,' though it's definitely up there (In my mind, one is preference, the other is fact as far as art can be measured by fact. If that makes any sense :p). The best is probably Citizen Erased, because it's just so many different things in one song, blended flawlessly. Maybe Exogenesis or Knights. Tough to say.
EDIT: Blah. Now I'm overthinking it. Time is Running Out and Forced In as well.
