I can't get into NIN, although I've not really tried.

I have friends that rave about them so I spose I should find some time. What's the best starting album?

Definitely The Downward Spiral. If you can't get into that album, don't bother.

Yeah, go for The Downward Spiral. Don't be scared or shocked too much at first. :D It's a deep, perfect yet chaotic album that is EVERYTHING NIN is.

However, if you want something a bit more basic and less chaotic go for The Slip. That album is much more in line with what NIN is now-a loose alt-industrial-instrumental band. The Downward Spiral scares a lot of people off. The Slip is a little teaser of what NIN is. After that, you can jump right on in-with the exception of With Teeth, every NIN album is a 4.5/5 or higher, and every album is wildly different.

The Fragile really is the last one you should listen to, as it's tough and most people dislike it at first because it's so slow and melancholic. But once you take it in,

The Downward Spiral. You'll dislike it at first because of the noisy-ness, but it'll grow on you.

Only go for The Downward Spiral if you plan on taking up the album as a whole on one go. Half of the songs dont even have the same impact if you listen to them individually. If thats all you want to do then go for Broken since its basically a small EP of The Downward Spiral's specific sound and taken a bit accessible and straightforward. TDS is imo however the least accessible release. There's too many structures of concepts needing to be grasped for but it grows on each listen.

The Fragile is more of the same but the experimentality and progressivity is alot more expanded, as well as alot more melodic. Its concepts and themes are far less subtle which in some ways make it less interesting, but its also a bit deeper as well, and with songs such as Into The Void, Starfuckers Inc., Even Deeper and The Big Come Down, its alot more user friendly.

As a starting point though, at this point, The Slip is the most accessible, not only cause its an amalgamut of everything modern NIN is, but also cause its completely free, so its quite a good starting point. With Teeth is pretty much The Slip if it had a price tag, had more tracks and generally alot more of a grittier structure.

Pretty Hate Machine is a nifty little gem, in some ways it feels alot more "fresh" when you listen to it now for some reason. Its straight up dark, smooth, synth-pop. The structures are NIN typical but the general sound is quite different.

Year Zero is also an album better off taken a whole but the difference is most tracks work seperately as well, probably cause this one has alot more of an electronic and drone sound instead of acoustics. About 90% of the album is just electronic and was made on Rezor's laptop, which is quite funny when you think of since he did the album while touring and he quite literally spent an unordinarily small time in making it, yet its arguably his most prestiegous and biggest release ever made.

PHM is NIN's best album, fact.

It's heavy, dirty, sexy and is packed with ch0000000ns. Srsly, Terrible Lie, Sin, Down In It, That's What I Get, etc, NIN don't top those songs.

Carbo
12-04-2010, 02:19 PM
Head Like A Hole is probably the best track from there, only if that opinion stems from what it turns into in a live context.

But as stand alone tracks then Down In It, That's What I Get and Ringfinger come to mind for me. I wish the two former were played live more. Down In It at Woodstock = sex.

Yea I'll argue with PHM....not his best album. I absolutely love it, but it sounds soooo dated. And then you've got the clunky, teenage angst-ridden lyrics.....but that's pretty much a constant with NIN. Count how many times he uses words like "decay".

Yea don't get me wrong, I'm a pretty big NIN fan ever since The Downward Spiral came out.
But I don't think many would argue that his lyrics read like a depressed teenager's journal.

Fucking hell, compared to my lyrics, Pretty Hate Machine has been written by a intellectual adult

Mine don't read like a depressed teenager's journal, they are a depressed teenager's journal :stunned:

I know it's off topic, but I'd like to commit to paper (or internet space) that I should definitely make my lyrics less emo.

Possibly, up until With Teeth came out. I, for one, think his lyrics are amazing, and that he is one of the best lyricists in the business. He captures human emotion perfectly-it being immature or not. Not to mention The Downward Spiral's lyrics are quite deep, and much more abstract than a depressed teenager's journal. With Teeth's lyrics were shit, with the exception of the last few songs on the album. The Slip has some great lyrics, however.

Why not? It's a new NIN song, and it's awesome as hell.

The fact that it's the theme for Tetsuo 3 is awesome as hell. NIN and Tetsuo fit together like a glove, and the song certainly makes the awesome cyberpunk series justice.

I think TDS would be a good place to start. It will need a few spins though.

The How To Destroy Angels EP may not be a NIN album, but it is very similar to NIN's With Teeth/Year Zero sound. It's free aswell, so there's nothing to loose.

I would start with the Broken EP. I'm listening to it now. Loves it!

And a heavier song list:

Somewhat Damaged
Mr. Self Destruct
Ruiner
Wish
The Wretched
The Big Comedown
Burn
Reptile
Last
I Do Not Want This

*edited to add Eraser. The first half is quiet, but it's worth it for the end.

I'm sure there are others that are notable, but these are just some of my favorites off the top of my head.

TDS is one of the only albums that really isn't overrated. March of the Pigs is just pure abrasion, Closer is just so, dirty, Ruiner is so out of control, A Warm Place is pure bliss, and Hurt is just, depressing. Reptile literally makes you feel dirty yourself. It's perfect.

The Fragile and Year Zero are perfect as well. Pretty Hate Machine is good, but is just so dated now. Broken is good but overwhelming, and With Teeth's lyrics are horrific. Ghosts is great, but an experiment, and kind of sloppy, and The Slip is great, but feels like an EP.

TDS is one of the only albums that really isn't overrated.

You can't say something like this. It's an entirely subjective matter, and in all honesty I do find TDS very overrated on the ocassion.

It's one of the only NIN albums where I cant stand listening to the centerpieces without hearing the rest of the album at one go. It's meant to be digested as a whole. The only songs that I can hear from the album on their own is he entire first half up until Ruiner, and then Reptile and Hurt, otherwise it's extremely dull for me.

The Fragile is a bit of the same but the difference there is that I like the music better and seems like an upgrade over TDS. It stands as my favorite NIN album.

On another note I am bitter because Trent has underplayed Down In It live. It deserved more attention. The Woodstock performance is killer.

Year Zero is hit and miss for me. Definitely one of my least favorite NIN albums.

All their earlier stuff is my favorite (PHM, TDS, Broken, The Fragile, Still, etc..)

Man, I think Year Zero is near perfect. But, I noticed you put Still on there. YES! :D Leaving Hope = most depressing song ever

Still is my second favourite NIN album, tbh. Every song is outstanding, especially Leaving Hope, Gone and TDTWWA

I agree.

PHM really only comes alive when you've experienced it in a live sense. Other than that it's a groovy pants album that on its own feels less NIN and more synth pop. Then again Purest Feeling is for most of the part Trent trying to be classic Ministry so no surprise there.

Which reminds me; goddammit Trent. We never got Down In It and That's What I Get as often as it should have been.

For me, PHM is the raw essence of NIN/Trent.

Not to say his other masterpieces, The Downward Spiral, The Fragile and Year Zero, aren't so-to-speak as 'NIN' as PHM, but since I first discovered NIN, tracks like Down In It, Sin, Terrible Lie and Head Like A Hole have always been the songs that define their sound to my ears.

Okay still is even more angsty. But With Teeth helps with gradually converting your angst to anger which I generally find a better place to be.

I heard some live version of Hurt a few days ago, and it totally grabbed me. I've been listening to some of the rest of their/his stuff, and I think I'm starting to get into it  I also think Hurt is one of the best songs I've ever heard...

What albums would you say are the best to listen to first?

Depends. I'd recommend to get The Slip first, it's the most accessible and you can get it for free. Get The Downward Spiral afterwards.

Hurt came on the radio recently, and although I've heard it many times before, I really listened to it for the first time. It brought me to tears - and songs rarely affect me like that :erm:

I'm really liking Hurt again. I think not playing it live for two years due to being 'retired' helps.

With Teeth easily. After that The Fragile.

Yeah, then go for The Downward Spiral :)

Absolutely nothing accesible about that album.

Shall download With Teeth at some point soon then :D Listened to The Slip the other day, and I think I like it! A few of the tracks sounded a bit like random noise, but I'm sure I'll get there...

I 'got' The Downward Spiral first time. :erm: I'm weird.

The Slip is probably the best to start with since, y'know, it's free. It's not perfect but it's not a bad representation of what NIN is either.

Really liking With Teeth too. Gonna have a listen to The Downward Spiral properly at some point soon!

And I read that Trent's taking a break from touring at the moment...Is there any more news on that? Or is that still the situation?

That's still the situation. He's working on How To Destroy Angels and will probably tour that project for a bit before going back to NIN.

Yeah, it needs time to develop. I can't wait to hear the new album. Hope it's better than the previous release.

Trent said that it'll have a new sound from the EP, which is good because the EP was quite NIN-ish at times. Also, I don't get all the hatin' on Mariqueen. I'm sure Trent married her for a reason

How To Destroy Angels sounds like a Year Zero-light with female vocals. That's not a bad thing.

Yeah but HTDA isn't NIN so that's why they aren't releasing their debut until fall (it was supposed to come out spring-early summer) because they wanted to find their own sound. I'm interested to hear what they've been up to

I don't get it either. I don't hate her, just like I don't hate Trent. But I don't love the project as much as I do NIN because it doesn't have its own voice yet. I think if Trent lets go of the reins a bit more, and lets Mariqueen handle a little more of the music, then we could see it flourish with its own identity. Because as of right now, it's very much a Trent-central project.

Sampler and pre-orders for Girl with the Dragon Tattoo ST available: http://www.nullco.com/GDT/usd.php

From TR:

For the last fourteen months Atticus and I have been hard at work on David Fincher’s “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo”. We laughed, we cried, we lost our minds and in the process made some of the most beautiful and disturbing music of our careers. The result is a sprawling three-hour opus that I am happy to announce is available for pre-order right now for as low as $11.99. The full release will be available in one week - December 9th.

You have two options right now:

VIsit iTunes here (http://www.itunes.com/thegirlwiththedragontattoo) where you can immediately download Karen O’s and our version of Led Zepplin’s “Immigrant Song” when you pre-order the soundtrack for $11.99.
You will also be able to exclusively watch the legendary 8-minute trailer you may have heard about (no purchase necessary obviously). We scored this trailer separately from the film, BTW.

Or…

Visit our store here (http://nullco.com/GDT). We’re offering a variety of purchasing options including multiple format high-quality digital files, CDs and a really nice limited edition deluxe package containing vinyl and a flash drive.
In addition, RIGHT NOW (http://nullco.com/GDT) you can download a six-track, 35 minute sampler with no purchase necessary.

Or…
Live the dream and visit both! Atticus and I are very proud of the film and our work, we hope you enjoy.

Best,
TR

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo opens 12/21 in the US.

And I might as well add in a shout out to the other music forum that I <3. Echoing The Sound (ETS) has been redesigned and refreshed. It might be a little buggy still since it just got out of beta, but it's back after being down for a while. Come join us!

I am devastated that the links to the Null Corporation site are down. If anyone knows how much the deluxe package is, let me know!

Edit: Ok, its $300.. Maybe not.

Same here. I'm a sucker for all things NIN/Trent and I have an extensive collection, but it just sits in boxes in my closet and rarely sees the light of day LOL:. So no more collecting for me.

Anyways, I love this video and it's perfect to watch after a stressful week:

I think I'm gonna have to wait until after christmas and see how much money I've got, and then see if they've got any left...

:D Why thank you, I've recently rediscovered why I was obsessed with Halo 5 years ago and it's once again taking up far too much of my time
