Thought it was brilliant that they kept mainly to TDS/Fragile material!

There were these crazy skin head fans at the front with no tops on that were pushing everyone, was hard to stay on your feet. During JA i was stood next to a couple of couples, and you could tell the guys were miserable cunts who wouldn't budge so was hilarious when half way through the set the whole place just started jumping and they were swinging at anyone near by but they eventually just got swept away. Trent also came into the crowd near the begining and I was inches away

Last night was.... odd. It was awesome, as NIN gigs always are, but it wasn't the best performance i've seen, which is sad really considering it'l probably be the last time i'll ever see them. I didn't think the set-list had enough variation, but it was a nice surprise to hear La Mer done live. Basically it was just The Fragile and some other stuff that a good majority of the crowd [including myself for a couple of tracks] didn't know, plus a track or two from each of the other albums. They axed The Slip though, which was cool as I don't really care for that album.

Flynn
15-07-2009, 09:54 PM
Weird you say that about the fragile. On the floor practically everyone was singing along to every word of every song.

Weird you say that about the fragile. On the floor practically everyone was singing along to every word of every song.

I was on the lower tier of the first block on the left and there were a lot of confused faces  Not for The Fragile tracks, but songs like Gone, Still and Metal we're drawing odd glances.

I'm glad they did stuff off The Fragile, I just wish they'd played the good songs. It just wasn't angry enough for me

Basically, they didn't play The Wretched or We're In This Together and I wish they had.

It was a brilliant night on the whole, I really enjoyed Jane's Addiction, it's been 7 yrs since I saw them but their 1hr set was more than enjoyable, I thought they would be on longer but they set the tone, I did catch some of Mew, just the last 2 songs but their music was more suited to a Disney film, a real trashy Danish pop outfit who thought they had talent.

NIN came on in an interesting way, the entire arena lights were still on when they entered onto 'Now I'm Nothing' then the lights went out on 'Terrible Lie' I agree it was something special. Trent threw his guitar a fare distance on 'TL' & kicked down his keyboard on 'IAFA'

I'd agree at the start of the gig got about 3-5 songs the strobe lighting would nearly blind but I loved! The pit action was good on the whole no huge circles but a very good crowd apart from the ones who smoked. 1 GN track would have been enough I'd say 2 was much plus Bowie's made 3 covers in that set when we could of had more NIN songs......oh well. Personally I felt Gary's vocals on Metal were well off!

Great gig! There is no way Sonisphere will top this, outdoor gigs are not great any more.

Starfuckers is mega, bothered about Closer though.

Jane's dragged on a bit imho. I saw them 7 years ago and they ruled, last night was just a bit meh. Dave says (:chuckle:) they played just old stuff though, and I don't know that stuff as well. I knew about 3 songs, and even they dragged a little bit. Been Caught Stealing was the best. But yeah, Jane's a noob. I still love Perry though, omg. Bit gutted we missed most of Mew too () dunno if they played Comforting Sounds or not and I lurve that song.

Ooof, in true London style our journey wasn't simple. Our fucking exit on the M25 was closed so we had to detour through Woking. We didn't get back to town until 2am and had to drive all the way to Romsey to go and clean the school. That was a bit of a comedown. I rushed it and was back at home in bed by 3:30 though, haha.

I really wanted to see mew but didnt get in the queue untill half 7, i was stuck in traffic for an hour for the fething blackwell tunnel.

I wasn't sure if I would like Janes, and I didnt, I was so bored, went to get an awfull bacon cheeseburger and chips instead.

My only criticism of the show was the inital onslaught of strobe lighting for the first few songs, my eyes started to see things. I honestly thought someone had fucked up when the house lights were still on, then it was obvious what was going on, kind of wish we could have seem some sort of show along the lines of the Lights In The Sky Tour, not that I don't like the raw formatt.

I'd struggle to say Muse are better after gig, especially when you consider the band are session artists that rehearse before and during the tour having not played together, not 1 fixed lineup.

Ilan for a young drummer impressed me, Robin was on the ball, Justin for a guy I don't techinically doubt, just associate with more chilled out music (Beck) was absolutely into it.

Gemsy

Any get JA's set list? I think they played 9 songs??

I was hoping they'd be on for more than an 1hr but it was still bloody good! They play tonight in London, somewhere near Holborn £8

I think it went:

Three Days
Whores
Ain't No Right
Then She Did...
Mountain Song
Been Caught Stealing
Ted, Just Admit It
Oceansize
Stop!
Jane Says

I thought the music was great but the singer was too much and he sounded shit. And I loved the screen projections they kept me most entertained

I was that bored I went to get some food, the worst Bacon Cheeseburger I've ever had, and walked back to where I was infront of the lighting desk where I had left 20 minutes ago.

I really wasn't sure if I'd like them and there was something Weird about perry's voice that really just added to what I didn't like.

That was fucking amazing. Gig of the year so far - everything just clicked together: great setlist that catered for casual and die hards, great crowd, amazing energy from the band, mad lights, and Gary FUCKING Numan!

I have quoted Olly as saying that "this was better than Muse." :D

Setlist:

Now I'm Nothing/Terrible Lie
1,000,000
Heresy!!!!!
March Of The Pigs
Reptile
The Becoming
I'm Afraid Of Americans
Burn
Gave Up
La Mer
The Fragile
Non Entity
The Big Come Down
The Downward Spiral
Wish
Survivalism
Down In It!!!!!
Metal (w/ Gary Numan)
Cars (w/ Gary Numan)
The Hand That Feeds
Head Like A Hole
Hurt

All in all, amazing. Thanks to all the Musers who kept us company - hope you all got back home safely. Bless Gemsy and Vel, who reminded me of two excited schoolgirls.

I'm daft, for some reason I thought Terrible Lie was near the end, rather than Down In It. They were both bloody awesome though.

And it was great to see everyone, I love all of your faces, sorry I couldn't hang about afterwards, but I was conscious of the fact that I had to get up at 7:30 for work. Oddly enough I saw a guy from work when I went to the back with Gemsy.

And I was bloody excited, especially when we got right to the back with all the space and Gemsy and I were Ninching it big style.

Fucking Numan!!! Bloody awesome. Kind of reminded me of the version of Cars that Numan did with Fear Factory. And I'm Afraid of Americans was probably my absolute highlight of the night, followed by Terrible Lie, Burn, Wish and The Big Comedown. I think that was the best set I've seen from NIN in a few years.

Ah man i can't wait for soni.

It's certainly ramped up my enthusiasm for Soni again after Machine 'waaaaahmbulance' Head pulled out.

OH GOD YEAH, those fucking strobes. When will bands realise that the idea of stage lighting is to light whatever's on the fucking stage, not blind the fucking audience. Dave put his sunglasses on. Still had a headache afterwards.

Yeah I thought the house lights on thing was a mistake too. TURN THE FOOKIN' LIGHTS OFF

Those strobes were bloody mental!! No need. The house light issue was full of lol.

I missed Mew entirely, and must confess that I was bored for a lot of JA. Still, they played Mountain Song, Stop and Been Caught Stealing, so it was all good. Lol also at Dave Navarro getting a much bigger scream off the crowd than Perry.

Lastly, is anyone else really fucking bored of Hurt??

Seriously I was seeing double, the smoke in double. I was thinkinh about driving at that point.

I'm pretty sure 1/2 the lighting right was strobes or blinders of some sorts, they could have at least be coloured strobes to vary my pain!

I think the lighting engineers forgot they started this tour in the sun at outdoor amphitheaters where they might have been appropriate!

On a random note, all I know from this gig, is that it's a small world, ended up helping someone push start their car on an M1 service station after getting some coffee down me to find out they from a town 5 minutes away from me.

This gig was x10 better than the 1/5 nights (Sat) in Brixton in 2007, the crowd were much more up for it. 2005 was amazing as it had been 5 yrs since the sort of long silence if you like but this was a great send of as Trent goes into the wilderness for sometime at least

I was in NY in April, would be great to see them there at the end of the year :).

Ahh, you see this was why I made so much effort to find my perfect spot. It was literally like this - push down to front on the right, shit sound, nobody bouncing, get out of crowd, walk to back, push forward, push to the side, absolutely packed, no space to move, push back inwards, spot circle pit, wait for loud noises, STEAM through crowd, and boom. SO much effort. I think I finally got to that circle pit in time for I'm Afraid Of Americans and I'm so glad I did. If I'd stuck in any of the places I'd stopped I wouldn't have enjoyed the gig nearly so much. Plus it's dead easy to spot myself on videos.

I'm so bruised though, and my camera's still dead. Great memories though.

I took my mate with me who I got into NIN a while back, he only really knows recent material (ie from with teeth) and I knew it was going to be mostly pre With Teeth setlist.

When Wish came on he said "this would make an epic driving tune", He just looked at me mouth open nodding in approval when Ilan went double time on the Bass drum on the outro.

Last
Help Me I Am In Hell
Gave Up
Suck

The Downward Spiral:
Piggy

March Of The Pigs
Closer
Ruiner
The Becoming
Eraser
Reptile
The Downward Spiral
Hurt

The Fragile:
Somewhat Damaged
The Day The World Went Away
The Frail
The Wretched
The Fragile
La Mer
Starfuckers, Inc.
The Big Come Down

With Teeth:
You Know What You Are?
The Hand That Feeds
Only

Year Zero:
The Beginning Of The End
Survivalism

The Slip:
1,000,000

Yeah, I can think what I'd like it to be, but I need to work out what they're most likely to play in a 1-hour set so I can decide whether or not I see them at Sonisphere. Probably doesn't help that most of my favourite NIN songs are really frequently played.

Eh, different people like different things. My favourite NIN album is TDS (YZ is second or third) not only because I like the music, but the story that goes with it is engaging.
Its certainly the best concept album I've heard.

This is what Trent said on the NIN boards:

We played a purposely quiet, intimate set. I figured it would either enrage or baffle the metal audience... but to our amazement it went over great!

Also, and very importantly, the calmness of it meant I could go absolutely fucking mental for Metallica :D

Oh it was beautiful and pretty but i wanted to kick off dammit!

Yeah, this probably would have been my reaction. I was really looking forward to Machine Head and Metallica yesterday, so that was the kind of mood I was in. I'm sure NIN's set was beautiful and atmospheric etc etc, but I think it was an unwise choice for a festival, especially in that slot when people just want to get pumped up for the headliner. As much as the fans like to hear rare and mellow tracks, I'm sure most of them didn't want a pre-Metallica festival set made up exclusively of those songs.

So yeah, screw NIN. I'm so, so glad I didn't see them. I'm so glad I thought Sonisphere would be unable to beat their O2 gig, hurrah for foresight. Heaven's Basement were an awesome alternative.

I think I was still so pumped up from the triple whammy of Lamb of God, Mastodon and Machine Head and then AIC's stonking rockathon to appreciate NIN's more sedate stuff. Plus the position of the setting sun meant that looking at the stage was difficult. They might want to align the stage better next year.

Yeah I know they did that. And I'm hoping it'll materialize into a fan-made official DVD that'll somehow make it to the hands of fans who had nothing to do with the production/distribution.
I don't have room on my comp for any of the concert files, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that a nice, polished LITS Tour DVD comes along.
